A few dev Q&As ago one of the devs said their favourite role was tank driver. Does anyone remember which one that was?
Yeah. Which tank you are driving depends on how long you can play the game before crashing out after stalling on a random bump
Currently the only way to actually turn a heavy tank is to shift into 1st, because it stalls in every other gear.
And I think that equally could have been certain casual and certain comp players.
They may not agree on everything but there's definatly a level of players who have put many hours into the game recognise that comp and casual exists

Server kicked out peeps more times than the client crashed. But indeed the client crashes need to be fixed too as they are frequent enough as well.
About the fatal error client crashes - I was reporting it since U17, but they were seemingly not touched and so now with U18 got even worse sadly...

10 days since the last update, endless player and server crashes, there are 5 people from Team17 online on Discord right now and no one says a word. No news about a hotfix, nothing.
This company is a disgrace, and our community manager somehow manages to be even worse.

If you have an Nvidia GPU , switch from DX12 to DX11 and it will help with the crashes ( and also with stuttering).

Garrisons are player built but it's never told unless you look for the information like a smart person or someone says so.

cod playstyle works well in any shooter. run and gun and then bask in your kills like it's the soul point of the game

Avg kills in a pub game was something like 24 kills per game

comp-casual-split happens in every game though. back in the day when community servers were a thing in cs people who played clanbase, esl etc. used to go to community servers and dominate. usually they got banned tho because people claimed cheats

HLL is too stuttery and inconsistent to be a good FPS. So if you're good at say CS2, it does not just translate over.

The people doing things are the ones that call stuff out. Like there really isnt a correlation between high scores and not making calls. The other deduction you can make is the one with the score is actually taking out the tank or garrison

This used to be me. Id happily SL for anyone as long as they did stuff. Id even accept guys typing in squad chat. But yeah, patience is running very thin just now with how the games going
PC usually only demands leadership roles have mic, and this isn't always enforced since it's not always reported, the whole squad being no-comm an all

i'd like to think. Some server's admins actively join squads and call out to the SL to see if they have a mic. Not a common thing but it helps

Think if younstarted to really be strict with mic requirements youd end up losing a lot of players because they dont have the right mindset to be frank.
Squad is very strict with comms and if even take a role thats important like heavy anti tank and dont have comms its 50/50 you get booted from the game. Non mic SLs get removed pretty quick too. Thats the culture there. You dont have that in HLL because its more casual

The artillery ability wasn't even in the game a month ago and it was perfectly fine. They added it and all the high levels were sniping garrisons in pubs and rolling. It needed to go. Great idea, poor execution mostly due to how people play the game

Player hq arty used to be able to destroy garrisons but was removed.
The only reason it was a problem was because artillery was 100% accurate. Which BM fixed by adding dispersion.

Yes but the way that the ability worked now, if you knew the rough area of a garry, it was just gone. The spread did nothing when it lasted too long.

This compounded when everyone who knew the common spots kept just spamming them there and removing all the garrisons

When it comes down to it, I feel bad for the developers when it comes to the state that update left the game in, they're catching all the flak when usually its due to unrealistic time tables set by publishers to appease investors. Not the poor bastards pulling all nighters writing code and pounding caffeine.

Primarily, it exposes the long-standing flaw within the meta that garrisons are limited to be too far apart.
Garrisons should have an exclusion radius of 150m and a team wide limit of 10 instead of 8.
Arty destroying garrisons exposes the inflated significance of destroying garrisons and the predictability of their placement. > Reducing the exclusion radius means there's more places to put garrisons and losing one garrison has a smaller impact on the flow of combat.
Hurtegen forest is unplayable, you can’t cross the water efficiently. Took me 10 minutes to cross in a panther, I can send the clip of what is happening in Your DM’s.

@fluid pawn any updates for the rcon clients for the private servers coming with this small patch today, or is this something happening in the main patch next week?
We popped this in the server owner Discord, however the server-side hotfix is aimed to fix this. If your server is impacted by the RCON related crash, your GSP should be able to move your server onto the new version.

This may be an issue that the server owner has yet to move to the new build. I'm chasing up server owners to get them to move over asap as those that have gone to the new version have been performing really well so far
@fluid pawn medium tank still gonna be better than heavy tanks with this update. Any plans to actually add a skill gap with something like weakspots etc? Or are we just pretending its fine
As we mentioned on U18 launch, this was just the first stage in a longer armor rework. Although not everything is quite right from the start, I'm working with the armor team on some comms pieces that will hopefully give more insight into why things have been done and what they'll mean for the future progress of armor in HLL
That being said, I know that they are looking at all the armor feedback and using the community sentiment as a basis for future changes so please do keep letting us know

Example: Why does it make sense that the ability's cost has now increased to 125?
The reasoning of Axis having two viable heavies ( when you get the Panther working again) as the only faction ? Just remove cooldown time and increase fuel cost. Done.
Big things for me were stability, recon flares, and command Arty Strike nerfs. Sweet! I can play again.

Not losing a garrison to "new arty" helps a lot for defenders on offensive mode
I'm not sure about barbed wire but I know from other players it can destroy even level 3 defenses and because the cooldown is so short building defenses in the offensive gamemode became useless

That’s odd. Had a game the other day where me and some mates hid in a bunker to survive the arty strike and it was fine then. Maybe it’s a health thing?

Jumbo was an assault gun primarily, used to spearhead an infantry push. The problem is the game works around always having a heavy tank somewhere which isn't how it worked IRL. But again, GAME so idk

In every engagement, all things being equal, the Heavy 75 now trumps a tiger in 1v1 in every situation other than approaching the tiger's front
I mean reality is you can't get everything in and keep things balanced
You could kill any tank with a recon tank if you have good comms and tank crew. The issue is it's a "heavy" without being able to frontally fight another heavy so it's labeled "useless" and everyone moves on

Comp already tried that by removing certain elements from this game.
Equally I'm sure a comp tank crew could do quite a bit of damage with any tank (not guareteed but depending on skill they play against it's very possible)

The conclusion I came to is that if you want half-tracks to be viable you have to treat them like a 3 crew armored vehicle, like how a tank has a dedicated crew.
If the half-track was fuel cheap and functioned more like a squad OP instead of a garrison it would be even more viable.
Plus you have to buff the mounted mg
3 weeks to fix issues that would have been found if the team tested armor changes (that got released) for even 3 minutes

I know how it's used currently, I'm saying that it could have been a totally different implementation to add different tactics. The long standing map control and spawn control meta of the game doesn't allow much of that. I guess I'm missing the larger scale and play style of Squad
For example, halftrack being an armored and MGed truck would allow for flanking assault with large groups very quickly instead of waiting the whole minute spawn for like 7 guys to run aimlessly towards the enemy and then reveal the location to anyone smart enough to follow
This could be done right now but it's too important a resource to use it that way
Would have to fix the jerkiness of vehicle motion, you can't hit anything with that MG while it is driving. It's also made of paper and any rocket easily takes it out. They are also not that fast and you get stuck easily so if you increase armor so 2 rockets take it out, it's still such an easy target.

Better suppression could help. Don't need to hit it if he can't hit you back. One rocket hits say the engine, 8 guys jump out and gang up on the poor AT player. I get that the current way it's implemented doesn't let it happen easily.

The half-track being an "easy" target is a balancing factor for it's mobility and spawn capability.

I think the half-track is pretty balanced as it stands. It costs a lot of fuel, risky to position in the red zone due to many AT and tanks but it's high reward, only 15m lock in redzone and can be moved if spotted. Also recon can't take them out directly and they can be easily defended on defence.
Highest risk for a halftrack is that some level 5 takes it and drives it into a tank.
I like this game for the tactical feel of it. Slower pace, more immersive, etc. MilSim would be like WT simulator mode. Roleplaying is part of a game's atmosphere and brings more fun. Comp doesn't give two anything's about that though and just want raw stats and gameplay since it's about game mechanics and exploiting

The way the game feels. When I play a game, I'm mostly looking for enjoyment from the community and gameplay that flows well. OTHER players get their enjoyment from aim training and watching numbers go up. Winning is nice and is the goal but above all else there should be fun to be had, not only your fun.
I don't see competitive games as fun, I see competitive scenes as the only way to get players who play correctly. But they take it to the extreme.

The component repair allows select repairing but also kinda nerfs it. You must pull back even more or get more defense from infantry since you can't just look at one spot and rep the whole tank. Cool idea imo

I am guessing as Community Managers, your description is more communications based for the discord - your feedback isn't directly going into gameplay so if you haven't played the game since 2023 for example, it wouldn't really make a difference.

they've said they have a "weekly playtest". We do not know how many devs partake, nor the extent of what that playtest is. Could be as little as loading a map to check something for all we know
The game will only move in the RIGHT direction when the community is given a REAL voice in gameplay balance decisions.
It's impossible for a developer/QA to play every class and understand all the mathematical aspects of "class/roles value."

And you're right, there's always some players strangely trying to speedrun a win in these playtests. It is incredibly odd behavior.

As I said, it's not an easy task. Several cultural changes are needed in HLL/T17.
Directly support the competitive community and next the community focused on realism/more casual play.
- Create official championships or support existing ones with simple things like offering good servers for matches.
- Prizes? It doesn't have to be direct money. It can start with DLC or some items (t-shirts, caps, cups).
Next step: Include representatives from all competitive clans to have a voice in gameplay balance decisions.
There are several other things that can be done later(e.g. As a basic thing, creating slots for streamers for example instead of the community being forced to play x49 (is it silly? Yes, but technically it is a change)), but first, we need to change the culture!
I've not jumped on a pte for a while purely for this reason. Off trying to see what's to be messed with while I get shot.

I believe this is where people are wrong. Competitive gameplay mechanics provides the most fulfilling game enviroment. It has the highest standards for the amount of spawns, and the longest gameplay. Milsim has no place in a game based on Math - it isn't real life and no one cares about hearing "how copy" a million times. It's just math. Softcap math, hardcap math. Hinge, garrisons, outposts.
Yes, you'll need to learn how to shoot and move. But we want them to listen to us about the MECHANICS of the game

Competive clans typically recruit off public games and more often that not, play quite a few pubs.
The single competive game the play as a single team is only a small part of their week. Often resolves around ensuring pubs are decent quality so they can try and pick out players to recruit. I'm also sure there's many a comp player adminning server etc.
Also comp clans are fully aware healthy pub numbers result in healthy comp numbers (as much as we all flame each other, but thats part of being on the internet).
Yes - I believe its just filler text to help ease the impact of the lack of a real fix. They literally are like "Let's write this - half our player base doesn't even realize how to properly build a garrison, so there is no way they will question the HP numbers. Send it"

This game isn't about math, it's not a Rubik's cube with strict sets of rules and conditions. You can have 8 garrisons and still lose a point, it doesn't just come down to having the most spawns. What if all those garrisons are out in the open getting camped by an MG? You still have the spawn available. Or a flank garrison in the red that never gets found by the enemy because it's in a good spot and you have 2 good squads spawning off it that sweep the area clear of enemy so they can never get near it. I've played competitive for a while and that doesn't magically make you know what to do for balance. 😄

Spawn rate and ability to control the map. If your team spawns but gets outgunned, the garrison will be overrun.

There's layers to it, but I agree mainly that being involved in comp does not automatically qualify you to be good about making balance design decisions.
Comp is the main reason we're in the perfect parity paradigm we've been stuck in for years.

The game feels pretty balanced so far, less so with the new arty strike stuff. But things like the recon/arty/node meta needs to be addressed but I don't have the specific answers. Removing arty guns and replacing with a self-propelled artillery tank that requires 3 crew to operate seems cool. It's not always in the same place, it requires coordination, and subject to enemy tank and satchel attacks.
It's all about math, bro. If you put Garry in the open, it's because you don't know the basics of the game and should move a few meters (math!) to a safer spot. You don't need to be competitive to do that. You learn that by playing casually.

Who do you play competitively for? The game is math. Softcap, hardcap. It’s just math with odds manipulated by more spawn points. If you’ve played comp you’d probably flop into a different OP then go to the 8 garrisons that are camped by the MG 🥰. Best thing is, you can have almost 20 different OP options to spawn into.

I had a few friends play this game but they couldn't get into it. Lots of people don't like the tactical aspect of it, all they do is spawn and die, they never see anybody. Having a good SL and squad communication makes a vast difference in this game but sometimes far and few between on pubs.

Supposing the floating piece is part of the mesh and not some crazy bug affecting only this cosmetic in particular, it's a 6-minute job to open the mesh in blender max or maya, delete that bit, import into engine and push up to source control
Never. In the 7 years of playing the game the only time I've ever crashed in game was when the servers would boot out half the people due to body parts colliding. It was a known issue for everyone. Things that aren't affecting everyone and known don't affect me.
There's no way the devs are that incompetent, they just don't care about the game and are there just to collect a paycheck. Likely also have a rigid triple a structure despite being a much smaller team than that so it's nobody's job to fix
