I downloaded the latest version for 1.20.4 but my server is in 1.20.2 and I'm scared of upgrading my server and other plugins failing because of the update

yea, but I'm in 1.20.2 and I try using premium plugins mostly

occassionally for the sake of them ending their development or abandoning maintaining the plugins, you want to aim towards future goals of abandoning their use or using the latest and final patch versions

or known plugins

1.19.4 is the final patch version for <1.20.x, for example

#

you'll never need to expect to update to 1.19.5

#

if you dont want to maintain the latest sub-version, target the latest final patch version alternatively

#

otherwise, be prepared to abandon plugins that are both short lived or cease continued development

should I just update my paper.jar file and then do updates on each plugin if necessary?

yes

#

youre likely safe to update to 1.20.4 currently, 1.20.2 isn't that far behind

Before you update ensure you make a backup of your server, so you can roll back in case it breaks something.

I just did what you did exactly, everything doing fine now I think.
