I work in a small business with only one other person, a physical therapist. I'm essentially her office manager and I handle everything for her patients for anything not related to the actual therapy, but i also help patients with some machines that don't use internet like the exercise bike, the oxygen machine, the microwave, and a TENS machine - but anyways, she offered to let me host my computer and it's servers out of her office. She's very computer illiterate, so i explained exactly what all it was the best i could to someone of her age because i don't want to (and dont want to feel like i am) take advantage of her. i even offered to pay for any internet price increases and for any electric bill price spikes. I also asked her if she thought (figured she would, owning a business and all) i should register for my own official business and just operate out of our office basically, and she said she didn't think so. unsure if you guys would think otherwise
some other additional notes:

  • the only computer in this office is my laptop, and she doesn't even have it on the wifi because she's afraid of power outages putting me out of internet i guess? it's on a cellular connection
  • she basically only has internet here for wifi for customers, and it uses WPA2-PSK [AES] security
  • the router here is a router i gave her a few years ago, she's a long standing family friend/doctor for my wife's family; it's just a netgear router
  • supposedly, any patient information should be safe since this laptop never actually uses the wifi; but would be open to any consideration of security in regards to customers connecting to it though
  • i explicitly want to localhost because i want to use my machine i bought for the purpose a long time ago, it's an i9 9900kf. if that was a stupid idea then i mean, second computer i guess SCgrin
my biggest concern is security though, if i can get advice please

hosting on cell data ain't a great plan, you'd want to get your server ethernet'd into the router at the least to be stable

#

theoretically being connected into a patient-accessible wifi network isn't gonna be a HIPAA risk (if there is any private data visible raw over wifi, either the patient is exposing it on their own, or some third party service is violating HIPAA and you're just in the room)

#

your server's security in that setup shouldn't be particularly worse off than it would be anywhere else, as long as you're not like... running windows with the network set as a local home network

#

if you either have windows firewall security on tight, or just use linux and ufw like a smart person for your server, you're good

#

only risk would be, yknow, if somebody can physically walk over and fuck with it

oh, sorry - to clarify, i'd be hosting on the internet here, not the laptop

#

i have a dedicated machine entirely i'd be hosting out of

#

just wanted to make sure i'd be as safe as i can be on the same network that customers can connect to for wifi lol

#

but that does answer my general questions SCgrin thank you very much
