#Structural bridges

In essence this would involve adding structures which go over(or under, whichever one works) the ship's structure. Allowing for bridges to other sections of the ship, without the main hull collision getting in the way. Meanwhile the bridges break if the blocks on their ends break, causing the connection to break.

There would be 2 primary instances this can see use. One involves using bridge to have 2 separated hull blocks collision wise, allowing you to make 360 degree jointed vessels intuitively alongside explosive charges and fleet formation. The other involves using them as reinforcement rods to keep your ship together if it were to be bisected.

Though, would only benefit ships that aren't meant to fragment and then swarm.

#

pretty sure 180 and likely even 270 or so degree joints exist, already, with some caveats

so essentially collision-less structure?

pretty much

#

more intuitive jointed vessels

#

though they'd likely have a different sprite otherwise it could be confused with normal structure at a glance

#

still prone to being damaged(even directly likely), just not on the same block collission plane as the ship its self

this could also help connect "separate" ships strongly as it seems to not collide with weapons (affected by explosions perhaps?)
how will this interact with the hull heat system?

silk ruin
#

getting shot directly(or in the AoE of an explosion) would still compromise it(so ofc protect it, like you'd protect any joint)

hull heat would still transfer over like normal
though it'd basically be going upwards then travel normally

#

since it's basically, a bridge

#

i could imagine an interesting armor setup with this but thats more of an exploit if anything

silk ruin
#

with the heat system though, it would also end up as a highway for heat transfer too

i will admit though - cosmoteer right now can sometimes phase ships inside other ships so i dont think the joint idea is viable untile theres a patch for that

silk ruin
#

so kinda gotta keep that in mind too

#

like some silly thing it could enable, 360 joints involving structures like this

steam logo lol

#

this would be really good for previously detach-only ship setups

silk ruin
#

also nonsense like giving your ship arms, for whatever reason

#

like actual moving arms

#

without a degree rotation limit

#

or even making your ship able to have its structure contort like a swimming fish or worm while turning
without as much structural compromization in the design

#

an alternative to stuff like this

#

honestly primarily thought of suggesting it due to how interesting flexible(literally) and jointed ships would be

#

especially mechanical wormships

silk ruin
#

also would use the game's physics rather than needing a hinge block

elfin void
#

im pretty sure this HAs to be added when transforming ships become a thing

#

cuz you will very likely want this when using hinges/pistons etc.

silk ruin
#

worm designs might need a way to mitigate thruster heat damage, if that gets implemented

silk ruin
#

the game's physics are more than optimized for nonsense like this afterall, even on huge ships mod(don't try docking for wormships if you want to stay sane)

all for now for size reference
