To make diagonal ships more viable, and to give traditional layouts another method to achieve reverse thrust without building ugly shrouds, perhaps a special setting on thrusters could allow more ideas for ships?
Like a toggle setting, Offset thrust 45 degrees left or right, and it would visually crank the nozzle to one end or the other instead of straight.

And take one dive into domination or pvp in general, and you'll see that there isnt useful creativity to using diagonal, it's a stupid decision (because it is not gun wall :P)
This would give diagonal a chance.

Here are some other similar suggestions—but I'm sure you get the point. It's been discussed; some people think it's a good idea and some don't. The developers fall into the latter category.
I personally am in the middle; I think I'd like a diagonally mounted weapon of some sort, but I'm against diagonal shields and thrusters in the current state of the game (as convenient as they'd be) for the same reasons the devs have said that they are against them.
It's entirely possible that future updates might change my mind, and I might think that diagonal thrusters would be a valuable addition.
I'm still hoping we get transforming ships in the next decade or so; that'll solve this problem in one sense!
