#Small Lasers can phase through a tile of armor when hitting a ship that's moving towards them

I'm not 100% on the mechanics behind this, but I'm relatively sure this phasing is possible with other weapons, small lasers were just the easiest to reproduce. I've had this glitch happen to me before with heavy lasers too, but I've been unable to reproduce it with them even in about an hour of testing.

While not "game-changing", it definitely gives all affected weapons an advantage they are not supposed to have, so I thought I'd bring this up

I've attached a save game with a small laser kite and a Sprocket that's getting its deck cannon killed through a layer of armor, and a couple gifs of the glitch happening to me in that test game as well as normal career games. It's weirdly inconsistent, but I'll continue investigating and post all my findings below.

The save game may say that mods are being used, because I was using a mod to increase the zoom level to make the hitboxes in the first gif at least partially visible.

While my initial tests (and the career gifs) were on the latest release candidate (0.28.1_rc2), the bug exists on stable as well (the last gif is on stable release 0.28.0f).

(Forgot to attach the last gif)

I thought this may be a thing but I’ve never been able to have it occur.
My guess is this is due to how projectiles work. If you look at the hit box in dev mode it doesn’t move smoothly, instead it jumps from one point to another.
-# I’m very inexperienced so this may very likely not be the cause :p

I was attempting to reproduce the railgun armor phasing gif, but I managed to make a railgun damage armor almost twice as deep as usual by targeting a storage behind it instead of the structure in front of it

And no, the adjacent armor bricks are not absorbing the damage, I checked

The gif in question

This game is strange 🤭

Wow, is that railgun thing consistent?

golden notch

No(t yet)

What is the total damage dealt for each hole? If you wouldn’t mind calculating it (presuming you still have the ship loaded)

golden notch
#

It's not even affected one way by the structure the damage amount is just inconsistent <~<

On the top hole, I targeted a storage behind the armor
On the bottom hole, I targeted a piece of structure in front of the armor

That is really weird. Maybe there is some inherent randomness to the penetration falloff?

golden notch
#

When I remove the structure, the damage is perfectly consistent

compact lintel
#

Is it reading as penetration when it moves through structure?
I notice that some of the structure is from a different ship, is that causing it?

#

I've tested it like 5 more times and I am completely unable to reproduce the low damage shot

:/

I keep getting the 18k one

compact lintel
#

Has the distance you are shooting from changed?
-# maybe it was a microsingularity

golden notch
#

Barely

#

Maybe it was some float precise bullshit where the shot clipped an armor block just right so the pen reduction applied but not the damage?

#

Idk just spitting words now

compact lintel
#

Maybe? I genuinely don’t know. Uh, so you were trying to reproduce that clipping, is the ship damaged elsewhere? Could it have clipped?

Ppl seem to believe the cause is similar to what makes explosion guns work but idk abt that

Uh, question. Does a railgun going vertically through a 1x2 count its penetration value once or twice? (Can be tested with a flat and vertical 1x2 with corridor behind.
If it does then it could’ve ‘hit’ the same 1x2 twice, counting as penetration distance but not damage?
