#Rail gun bullets should have more heath the less rail accelerator there are.

To under stand what I'm getting at, let me preface this with relativity. As when a bullet is being hurled at a ship, from the bullets perspective, the ship is being hurled at the bullet.

So, what does this mean? If the collision has enough energy, both the bullet and the object it hits gets annihilated. The same thing will happen if the bullet hits PD bullet or a piece of flack. In effect, the faster the bullet is traveling, the more kinetic energy it has. the less likely it would be able to survive and intercepting bullet. the less kinetic energy the rail gun bullet has, the less chance the bullet has of annihilating.

What this will do? massive spinal mounted rail guns will more eastly be counted by PD and flack, while shorter rail guns are less counted by PD and flack. giving the decision to build shorter vs longer rail guns more depth.

If we wanna play with this idea more. One of the things we could do is have the bullet shatter instead of annihilate. Turning into a shotgun like projectile at the point of interception. The fragments should have lower penetration. And the more kinetic energy the rail gun bullet had, the higher the spread. But the more fragments and/or the more damage the fragments will do.

Short rails already are much preferred. No need to nerf long rails further

long rail has more hp because the bullet has more charge

At the moment small rails do more damage, while longer rails do more penetration and because of this there's depth to deciding if you need the burst or the range and reach of longer rails

In the case of realism... That doesn't exist here, well... mostly

They do? The tool tip says damage increases with everything else.

Putting realism aside, the question I had was, how do you defend yourself against a Capital class rail fan without nerfing rail cannon in their entirety?

Now, Plaus said that base line question is wrong. And it very well could be.

But it seems in my experience, using a mid size rail fan in career, I can core a lot of things if I hit them in a place that had 2 or 3 armor plates. Though I don’t really know much better rail guns can get. The diminishing returns does seem a little steep.

On the other hand I did stop several rail gun bullets with flack.

So it seems to me that rail guns are in somewhat of a weird place that I can’t quite describe. Then again I’m not sure this idea would fix it.

small rails don't do more damage full stop, but they are much more efficient for damage per cost

if you want to defend against rails you have great options, and if you're fighting an ai ship you are very unlikely to lose to it since it cannot railfan against you, just autofire,
for instance, the combination of a big line of PD and Ls. and the rail's won't get that far, almost no 1.5m railfan can get through that,
you can also just ram the enemy railfan with a really fast wall, using ls and ss, you would be able to tank a hit before getting into the ram, makes it really easy to kill that railship,
the extra hp longer rail projectile's get's is part of the trade off of making the longer rail rather than more smaller rails, as more smaller rails in a fan = more raw dmg
