I was thinking that it would be fun if you could build your own station to trade with NPCs like other faction stations. it would bring a lot to the later-game.

Some Additional Detail Ideas

  • Put the station on autopilot (just have it act like other faction stations)
  • NPCs looking for a trade would automatically come to your station sometimes in order to trade (you wouldent have to seek them out for a trade) as you could put the station on the map with a special setting or something to tell the game that this is a station and not a ship
  • You would have to be active (so no AFKing for free money) and in the system (For performance) for the station to do anything
  • A trading system where you would set prices and stuff but the price would have to be acceptable to the NPCs (so you couldent say like "100,000 for this one piece of ammo")

Some Balencing Ideas

  • Putting the station in higher level system would give you higher value trading NPCs but make raids a big issue
  • your already working on this but more dynamic trading would help balence this idea
  • the NPCs would only come based on your reputation (so you couldent lure them in for the kill and get free stuff)
  • Another way to balence this would be to put the functionality at a cost like blueprints (because i see this being a little too op earley-game) cause at that point in your gameplay you dont have much money

thanks for considering my idea i thought it might give a little more to later-game and to NPC interaction i dont expect walt to really see this specifically but i thought i might just put it out there

Yeah user-owned stations gets requested a lot but it's not on the official roadmap. The main issues are:

  1. How to balance the game economy for user stations.
  2. How to not make them bad for performance.

I think it wouldent turn out so bad if we just dont get to run them if were out of the system for performance

Or if like it would seem like some trades happened but we dont actually run the entire system we just load the trades in when you join back the system

possible idea to make stations reasonable for the economy
Add a new room structure "trading hall" ||(could also be nammed something else if theres a better name for a more sci fi setting)||
for the trading halls functionality

  • it will send out a "blip", all vessels within the region will know where it is (both friendly and hostile) ||(this will also attract pirets, or any factions you upset, that you need to defend against)||
  • you can put add items inside the structure, set a "sell price", then friendly traders can choose for themselves if thats a fair price
  • you can set a "buy" price to buy specific items off traders (along with a max buying budget so that you dont just go bankrupt)

the main balancing point here though, is that it acts as a big ol target for your enemy's to attack
so you need it to actually be defensible

  • mine asteroids/destroyed ships
  • automatically transfer materials between player owned ships to player controlled ships

Realistically, something like this would probably have to be thought about properly only after we have a dynamic economy. It's difficult to design player stations when we don't necessarily know how the dynamic economy will function on its own yet

The problem with this is that if the player is smart enough to put the station within the sun's corona, the traders would just camp out right next to corona's border and has a potential to pushed themselves or by the player thus giving the player free rewards...
