#Medium and large railguns

railguns are already modular
you can make them as large as you want
and even at their smallest they're larger than either large cannons or heavy lasers
^Agreed. The only way I can see a larger railgun making an appearance in Cosmoteer at all is much later in the future if power-creep gets out of hand and ships costing tens of millions with better armor and bigger guns overall becomes the norm.
i don't think you can get much beigger than infinitely scalable
illegal railgn ships can be any size
^The key is exactly what you said, ships that big are illegal for normal play.
That being said I was moreso talking about power-creep. Like I could see a large railgun variant one day if we eventually get tritanium armor, armored corridors, guns bigger than DC's, etc. Stuff that is well beyond what's being considered in the current state of the game.
The general power level and survivability of a legal ship would need to be much higher than what is currently legal and available for a large rail to be desirable.
what often happens with big railgun ships, is that after reaching the build grid limits of vanilla, the ship becomes a box shape of just railguns, and railgun's at this stage can practically kill any ship in 1 or 2 volleys
Yeah lol, although in fairness I assume that what OP was asking for is a larger railgun in terms of width, so it shoots a larger projectile rather than just more damage and penetration.
Which we just don't need and would be really bad for balance without some of the defensive power-creep I mentioned above
more scaled damage and penetration though, can completely slice through enemy ships
i don't think defense power creep would affect bigger railgun ships that much, since the projectile speed becomes too fast for pd, armour and shields melt, and if the railgun ship has tb's then ramming doesn't work much either
rails are op and huge already
Nah, they are mid
