but why not just... use whatever the ammo is

like cannon/flak/mine/cannon/nuke/electrobolt/flak/cannon

bc i do not think having an omni cannon is very good for intelligent gameplay - just change your ammo to whatever the counter is

^This is not a suggestion for a new meta weapon, this is a suggestion for a fun weapon that would mostly be used in campaign.

& Yes exactly you can change your ammo to suit the occasion... if you have it. It would not be a very efficient ship if it carried enough of all these ammo types to fire them as needed at all times. Especially when you consider logistics, each extra "ammo" type you carry would be stored further and further away.

As for regular ammo types, they would in general perform worse than using the intended weapon for it as opposed to the scrap canon.

this has been suggested before and someone wrote an explanation of why not more eloquently than me

An alternative idea for a scrap cannon that is significantly simpler and less all-encompassing than my original suggestion would be a shotgun-style cannon that can have anything at all loaded into it. Low penetration, bad range, easy to load. However if the shotgun-style blast got between armor plates the arc could hit a lot of components.

I'm more a fan of the idea that poorer factions/pirates/cheap ships could basically just fire debris at an opponent than I am attached to the OG concept I proposed. I think it's good flavor.
