So I've been messing around with different designs and ideas for ships, and was thinking about how expensive building a new ship can be, since you need a minimum of 40,000 (Or the right resources) just to get the most basic ship (cockpit, reactor, thruster and beds), even more than that if you need to put some guns on it.
So I had the idea of not adding a reactor...
This mini ship is a very basic example of the idea. LORE WISE: It would patrol around, looking for pirates or enemy factions. Once it's close to running out, it would return to the Dockyards and get supplied with power from them, then it would go out to patrol again. (This is shown in the image below)
This design is 17,000 cheaper than if I added a reactor to it and could be used for very early support in the career mode if you don't have the funds or resources to build another reactor on another ship.
To add to the usefulness of it, in more static battles, you could send guys to transport power from the "Missile Ship" to the "Ion Beam ship" in order to keep up the fire if it isn't efficient enough for sustained fire or the shields are taking enough damage run the current reactors dry.
Overall, it's a minor thing that won't come up too often, but I believe it would be quite fun and would allow for more low-cost ship ideas to be possible.
