#Do you like lateral thrust?
1092 messages · Page 2 of 2 (latest)
if it was gimballing it would have to apply forward thrust at an angle to apply turning
objectively not the same
it would apply the same thrust at a small angle if it was gimbaling
ok? im not entirely sure if the engine would support an angled thrust, so lateral can bve used toi change the total vector of the thrust
that's what it becomes.
thrust x at angle y plus thrust z at angle a... do the trig.
it's basic rocket science lol
no. this isnt "rocket science". its basic dynamics, aka force components.
its surprising that you called it basic when you yourself dont understand the science
you're splitting hairs. the end result is the same
no, its not
yes. it is.
the end result is a thruster applying force directly sideways
in theory if the thrusters ever fired 5% of their thrust sideways and 95% forwards i would at least understand what you mean by it being functionally identical but the game never uses this
as far as i can tell
its literally only either the 5% thrust or the full forwards
i was under the impression that that is how it works...
no
the thrust is applied directly forwards or directly sideways most of the time
unless the ai is making microadjustments
so lat thrust is gone?
yup
Not really gone just replaced to improve performance
whats it replaced with
Pretty good compromise gotta say.
Not as powerful as mister lateral, but still pretty nice.
We’ll just say that bus takes pity on your poor useless ship and gives it a nudge
In my headcanon, it's a few crew sticking one arm out of the airlock to eject some thrust in the desired direction with a garden-hose-like contraption while other crew hold them in place anime-style
XD
They wave their arms to move the ship around, ''sailing'' through the dense space.
This logic sadly doesn't work for ships that have zero airlocks though 😔
they just do that thing like when ur on the rolling chair
they just scoot in the command seat
given what we know about
i dont think it knows pity
they drill a hole through a wall

my headcanon is essentially just crew slurping on some
like its spicy mountain dew and produce phantom forces
it is mountain dew
so that's what it's called these days huh
Seems reasonable
Let it be a game option
it seems just a little too niche for it to be toggled on and off in the vanilla game tho
maybe there can be a mod to bring it back
it adds 50% more processing
or hat, true.
That ship has sailed ya'll.
I dont think it matters if the thrusters are more realistic. Lateral thrust is very important to quality of life. I would strongly recommend keeping it.

In lieu of lateral thrust, ships with at least one operational thruster now have a very small amount of non-rotational "magic" thrust that they can exert in any direction but only when still or traveling at very low speeds. In general this should almost never be noticeable or significantly impact combat, but it allows ships with poor thrust balance to very slowly maneuver out of difficult spots.```
Cosmoteer update 0.26.1 is now available! This update contains dozens of performance optimizations that combined should significantly improve performance in almost all situations and especially for late-game Career saves. Many testers are seeing a 2x or even better improvement in framerates. We are also hoping that this patch will improve overal...
sadge
If you try it out you might even find it better now. Take a look!
while i thought this at first, the thing that ultimately made me choose to not want it anymore was the tremendous performance increase
and its removal greatly improved career and multiplayer pvp qol
I agree. a good trade
TBH it was only a very small part of the performance improvements.
every little bit helps
I certainly don't disagree with that! (The whole performance update was basically just tons of "every little bit" improvements that added up.)
But if performance was the only reason to remove lateral thrust, I probably wouldn't have done it.
i see, thanks for the clarification
why does A and D not work when holding W
no lateral thrust
yeah but it works on large ships
the way it feels to control small ships with very few thrusters is terrible
assuming no braking
hold w
then give some rotation
then hold shift
all i am pressing is w and a occasionally
i have automatic braking on
because i went back to 0.24.3 and only forward facing thrusters it doesn't have the oscillations
like what is even going on here? all i pressed was W (automatic braking on) (nebula version)
why is it rotating excuse me
ship i used for the grand prix event a few months ago
could be the bonus thrust decreasing as your speed increases, meaning you can't turn with it
It makes a lot of things inconsistent though, fortunately it doesn't break locking it seems like.
you dont need bonus thrust to turn
wait turn?
its neat when you want a ship to be in an exact spot but the ship has no (insert thust direction here)
get better at shipbuilding then
????? how is your comment at all relevant to what he just said???
thought it was sarcastic
Necroposting is a portmanteau word, being the mix of Necro, Latin for death, and posting, an Internet neoism that implies writing a message and sending it online.
This is by no means an official description I just made it up.
so...skill issue?
