a few concepts. to be expanded on

  1. ERA- basicaly a one time use bomb that gets blown up when hit, entirely absorbing any hit it takes. has the downside of exploding when hit (duh). does light damage to nearby ship internals and sets off fires in corridors, so people dont slap it on bare corridors. also you can maybe repurpose explosive charges for this since they wont have much use in the future once docking gets introduced

  2. tritanium plate- basicaly the same idea. really brittle armour that breaks quite quickly but has some really good penetration and EMP resistance

1 gets hit, so all the adjacent ones take the damage and since they can only be hit once those onest hen explode killing the armour beside it in a chain reaction that removes all the explosive armour

Some version of this can already be done with modding.
I actually have it on my todo list and I'm sure others do too
