Almost all of my save scums are from a ship smashing into me, becoming stuck, and then shattering my ship with a single cannon shot. I was thinking/hoping shields could stop ships and then depending on mass either collapse while stopping or greatly slowing the ship. A large shield would be able to fully stop a small ship and stay operational while a large ship moving quickly would break the shield but not immediately smash into the front of the ship.

have you considered making a structure bumber like this?
i think this suggestion would make large shields more powerful than they need to be by removing one of their only weaknesses, and is unnecessary since that problem can be easily worked around anyways
I've thought about doing that but it just seems janky. I agree making the change I propose would boost shields too much so there would have to be some sort of drawback. Maybe an auxillery building that needs to be manned or something. I just hate the gameplay of it. It just feels crappy where it's at right now. It's nearly to the point where I don't even want to play any more when a lower level ship can bum rush me with a few cannons in the front and break my ship in half.
Built-in ships often have a cage in front of their large shield to prevent that from happening (usually cabal ones), it's really not that janky
It isn't nearly as janky as you'd assume, give it a try you'll enjoy it
if you really don't want to use a structure cage you'll have to invest in a ton of reverse thrust
but the structure cage is a much better solution
Structure cage isn't always needed, my kites often avoid having them
Yeah but for everything that isn't a kite you basically need a cage
i cant lie i do think cages look ugly
plus i dont think realistically a cage like that would stop a ship
Nonsense.
Strut is 40% duct tape.
How would duct tape not be able to handle this?
