Basically it would make your entire ship invincible until it runs out of power, and its area of coverage would work similarly to a hyperdrive and the hyperdrive efficiency system.

Stupid over powered “bubble” shield

#

Maybe over powered “bubble” shield

#

So every damaging thing that hits you would direct it’s damage to the nearest shield generator, and only ONE shield generator may be chosen for every damaging thing

#

And if the generator is close to the thing that gets hit, it would be fairly efficient with its energy usage, and same for the opposite

#

And if a shield generator goes down, then it’s basically just empty space until it gets fully recharged, just like any other shield generator

The combination of 2 things that aren't exactly wanted, bubble shields and invincibility

#

There shouldn't be something that is unkillable

current shields are good

#

universally-protecting shields aren't a great idea

#

either it'd just overshadow the other shields, or be practically useless

Yeah I get that this one is pretty hard to balance, either it’s stupid OP or it will permanently cripple your power production and suck up crew labor

so... why did you suggest it?

I was on an idea roll I guess

maybe worth if there was a way to get through it like cannons arent affected by it but that would make the game even more rock paper scissory than it already is

Quick note, bubble shields (whether simple 360d arcs or ship-conforming) are one of the few ideas that Walt has specifically mentioned he has problems with. Even aside from balance, it would be extremely hard to avoid it trivialising ship design, especially with ship-confirming shields. Never say never, but it's definitely on the far end of "less likely".
