Just out of curiosity, what game speed do you usually use during combat in Career mode? (i.e. not when you use 8x just to fly somewhere fast)

1x speed most of the time because that's more immersive. In PvP obviously 1/2 PvP standard and whenever I am waiting for something like asteroid to be mined, ship to fill up with resources or doing a weapon/thrust test, I always crank up to a high speed.

I personally use 1/4th, as I love the RTS aspect I give the game with micromanaging several ships; also helps down the line with performance.

graceful current
#

Depends on how hard the fight is, I usually use 1/2 when fighting ships slightly weaker than mine, 1/4 if I'm fighting a stronger ship, 1/8 when I know I'm gonna die and I want to see where to improve my ship (or when fighting a fanged fighter with a way stronger ship so that I don't just slap it away like a fly).
I also pause a lot to give commands.

I approach career mode combat sort of like a Turn-based/RTS hybrid playstyle.
I typically pause just before coming into attack range to issue commands to each of my ships, then watch them play out in 1/8 or 1/4 speed.

i have an ion ship rn that requires manual aim (ai doesn't do it well) so i use 1/8x or 1/4x for most fights to aim it, 1/2x if i'm really near the end or just sitting there blasting a stationary thing
but of course any other time i use 8x
i do wish a 16x existed for faster travel and it went down to 4x still upon enemy encounter

In our 3p co-op multiplayer game, always at least as slow as 1/2 once an enemy is in visual range, and about half the time slowed to 1/4
Rarely 1/8, usually if we want to sit back and watch for fun

1x normal, 2x for large distances, 0.75x for combat

#

4x for normal travel and salvage, 1x when a hostile ship is nearby, and 1/2-1/4 for combat. Combat is a small portion of the gameplay time, so I try to savor it when I can. I turn up the speeds when it’s a stalemate though

#

I am using 1/2 for combat, based on the pvp standart.

Initially in Career I would use x1 with lots of pauses to micromanage weapons, attack angles and multiple ships. 1/2 without pause helps me play faster.

1/8 during combat. Sometimes 1/4 if the battle is with very few ships but vast majority of combat is using 1/8 speed.

Default speed I use without combat or danger is 1.
I'll set it to 1/2 right away once an enemy is spotted that I am going to engage. 1/4 right before battle when moving ships into a better position, but before shots are fired.

1/8 once the shooting starts and remains until all enemy ships or all my ships are dead.

#

I'm using a loooot of ships though (usually hundreds), so a lot of micromanagement and combat orders to give.

I pause a lot, but I tend to go with 1/2 unless there are a lot of ships or a really dangerous one then I'll drop to 1/4 or 1/8th. Its easy to miss something and make a mistake, which is brutal most of the time. I also pause a lot.

pulsar scroll
#

Wow that'd make for a boring slow motion fight that'd take a century.

opaque parcel
#

boring is really kinda subjective here.

#

Slow motion is (for instance) done a lot in movies. Making movies run slower during action scenes doesn't make movies more boring, just to try to illustrate what I'm pointing at.

pulsar scroll
#

Yes but imagine the entire action scene played at 12.5% speed.

opaque parcel
#

Like in The Matrix? 😛

#

The thing is, to try to illustrate what it is I like about the slower speed is, I like playing with usually hundreds of ships.
Not only will the game not run really well with so many ships shooting constantly and with all the wrecks anyway, but that way I can actually enjoy watching the hail of nukes go off and seeing ships shattering and breaking apart.

And of course it also gives me more control as controlling hundreds of ships in realtime is just not something I am able to do 😛

#

I don't enjoy the fights being over in a flash

#

So for me it's not boring

#

I can understand for some it will be boring. I guess it's a bit similar to "What is good music?" or "Is banana or apple tastier?".

glass pebble
#

Don't think of it as the game going slower, that'll ruin your fun- instead think of it as you increasing your reflexes and management skills for a bit. :D
Especially with Direct Control, where a perfect rotation or perfectly-placed shot could be the difference between a ton of loot or a lost ship

opaque parcel
#

I really enjoy sending lots of throwaway ships (but with nukes) and having some ships sneak through the crowd and sniping sensitive areas, kinda like in BSG when the blackbird sneaks in and disables the rez ship's ftl drives

solid gust
#

meanwhile
Me: but what if vanilla armor was made tanker

graceful current
#

also slow speed and pausing lets you look at everything that's happening at that time, and I think it's balanced since you're the only commander of the ship and noone tells you what's happening in the parts of the battlefield you're currently not looking at

Depends, if I know the combat will be easy, x8 or x4.
For a normal combat x2 or x1.
For a difficult combat, x1.
For a super deadly combat (or when using railguns), x1/2.
That doesn't mean that sometimes I use pause to give orders. I tend to use more pause when using high speed as otherwise it might be difficult to click on the right part

I tend to build one ship to rule them all and let the AI micromanage combat. I'm lazy enough that even operating a railfan annoys me, forget manually playing with dozens of ships/weapons. So once combat is established I'll often run at 4x or faster because I'm just watching things get fried.

My performance problems are normally from having a factory/miner ship off somewhere with 500 crew busy getting resources and running factories while my BUFF also has 500 crew trying to kill something.
