They dont have a build menu but a evolution menu
sufficient blood for supply
have drones that collect dead and living crew after defeating a ship
build with biomass and raw materials/ refined mats that become unrefined by reverse-crafting
every ship would function like a living body
not cockpits or command rooms but giant brains that require loads of fuel to properly thing
the incentive as a player is to survive by playing aggressive to get blood and other nutrients
could farm stations with food
armor could be made out of organic bio steel made out of raw stuff
bioelectricity could be a thing
stuff that de-refines refined mats could be stomachs
missles could be smaller aliens filled with acid that rush ships to explode
weapons could attack with: spines, acid, viruses, funguses, muscle+tooth combo for high melee damage (kind of like ion beam) and a load more

This would be a ton of fun to play, and could use a lot of interesting but functional gimmicks.
This is only a rough idea i came up with but everyone could brainstorm on this idea

It would be epic to have stuff like this in the game, combined with multiple factions within races

First things first I do not think having faction exclusive resources is a good idea for a gameplay, lore wise it wouldn't make sense, but I think everyone would rather just find iron plates to remake the hull.

Think of it like this: imagine you have just destroyed a ship that had like 5 crew in it, and it was a massive cargo ship full of resources, That are all useless because you can only use the biomass from the crew...

The faction will be unique through its gameplay mechanics not what resources it uses for the same reason why the Protoss are different mechanically from the Terran

Its essentially even more of a reskin, make functionally no difference
Would just be better if you just have it as a mod which include organic theme weaponry, an hivemind faction that build their ship using said weapon and theme but still dropping normal component

Heart (Reactor equivalent): Produces up to 30 blood cells. And replenish a charge of blood cells that enter it.

Blood Vessel (corridor equivalent): one way passage that force blood cells a direction while granting them a movement speed boost.

Blood cell (crew equivalent): Idly moves around the ship performing jobs as it encounters them. It has a charge it can expand to power an organ.
