#Career mode 2.0 - ship intercom messages (slightly updated)

Here's my second suggestion for career mode 2.0 (slightly updated)

Some games incorporate a system where random ships can "say" messages. Commuting NPCs will have a funny message sent out once in a while, stations have a more serious message like "s.s. voyage, you are clear to dock." and pirates/thieves can say messages at the start of, during, and near the end of battle. (2025) There are other messages for completing missions, signing on them, leaving and approaching stations and ships, hailing, collision, damage, pretty much anything and everything.

It's a surprisingly subtle detail, but actually helps make the game feel more alive. Here are some screenshot examples from the game "avorion".

Imo this would make the campaign feel a lot more "alive". Lmk what you think!

yes this is exactly what i want to see!

can't wait for someone to kill a pirate station only for one of its ships to start screaming racial slurs at them

Because career 2.0 is in active development, I wanted to resurface this just incase anyone had any thoughts they'd like to add about it. I still think it'd be a neat thing to add to career

#

furthermore, Starsector has a mod called "combat chatter" that makes your ships say things during combat (as well as enemies) and honestly I really like it, the messages aren't really in the way, are said very infrequently but still make a ship feel alive.

Imagine how cool it'd be to find an XL Uranium asteroid and then your ship's chat bubble immediately goes "Holy smokes! We've hit the motherlode!!"

#

to be immersive it'd have to be random so it doesn't feel spammy, and if it were done that way it would really add life to ships I'd imagine.

anything that makes career feel more alive like this is huge

river quartz
#

Yeah! Even though Avorion is a singleplayer game, all of these messages (there are a lot of them to keep it fresh) do a hell of a lot to make the galaxy more alive. The speech bubbles in particular are so good they make the world feel even more alive than Starsector's

I also really like how the crew in barotrauma will have their own chats and your gunner crew comment on the incomprehensible eldritch horrors that they're seeing

#

I reckon like when enemy ships come into view it would be really cool for your crew to say something depending on the type of ship and their price etc

#

This would be nice, immersion is an important aspect of games and stuff like this helps a lot

I feel like I'd be really cool if you could favorite and name ship parts like how you can favorite crew

#

and you get a warning when that part gets destroyed

#

imagine if there's a tiny chance that when a large reactor explodes there's a message like "It's not over yet, keep firing!!"

#

another game I'm gonna be roping into this is airships they do this really well

river quartz
#

I've heard about it, but haven't played it yet

this is pretty much just floating cosmoteer

on the more civil side, it would be awesome for stations to say something every couple times you revisit them especially based on faction standing.
"Welcome back to (station)!" - completed missions
"Get your business over with." - low relations
"We're offering a discout just for you!" - high relations, also makes something the station sells cheaper for a limited time.
"Welcome! Please grab a free coffee on the lobby floor - on the house!" - high relations

dawn finch
#

this would work way better when we have proper docking

river quartz
#

you could even have different dialogue per-faction to help with immersion

also I'm just thinking about one of my favorite moments playing any space game ever - I went into a bar in Starsector to find work, under a faction I had extremely high relations with, and instead of being offered anything a couple guys went "is that (name)?!" and one short speech from me later a bunch of ecstatic crews just joined my fleet for free lol

#

starsector seems really cool but I haven't played it yet

river quartz
#

it has really good worldbuilding, and for a video game it feels quite alive. Obviously the immersion will erode like any game but it eroded the slowest out of any space game I've played

#

there is a crap ton of work that has gone into making the galaxy feel like it lives and breathes without wars just completely permanently destroying everything

dawn finch
#

I feel like the main thing cosmoteer career is really missing is the immersion and world building

river quartz
#

it is reading heavy but honestly the writing is so good that I happily take the time lol

dawn finch
#

I wish cosmoteer was more reading heavy 🙏

#

It'd be great if we had missions that aren't just go kill that thing

river quartz
#

if Cosmoteer had a living career as good as Starsector's it would without a doubt be the best spaceship building game of all time (as in, focuses in on it instead of it being a side feature)

#

Starsector is also great but the ship building is more loadout focused, since you strap turrets and hullmods onto existing hulls, so it's not a true shipbuilder in my eyes

dawn finch
#

starsector = barotrauma??

river quartz
#

I sadly haven't played barotrauma ;-;

dawn finch
#

from what I've hearing it's just underwater starsector

river quartz
#

hm

dawn finch
#

well actually instead of controlling ships like a fleet you're inside

#

I also think that cosmo is an amazing ship builder, but it does lack any immersion

#

And immersion is really important if you want players to get hooked, the building aspect does that a lot already, and with immersion it would be even better

river quartz
#

I know this suggestion is a bit old, but I would still really love something like this in career and just wanted to bring it up again

#

it doesn't really do much gameplay wise, it's more of a fun feature to help make the game feel more alive

I was playing starsector with the combat chatter mod and there were some real gems I found

#

"That last shot hit the canteen, guess it's takeout."
"FUCK EVERYTHI-" (death message)
"I hope there aren't any lumbering idiots among my crew!" (entering combat)

i really really like this idea. i seem to keep passing by civilian freighters in career and always feel ignored lmao

if it helps devs, they could also have some sort of form-esque thing where the community submits dialogue lines for ideas

# glacial kernel i really really like this idea. i seem to keep passing by civilian freighters in...

there should just be a google form thats like

  • Discord Username (so we can reply to your submission) DO NOT FILL THIS OUT FOR A JOKE RESPONSE, WE DONT NEED TO RESPOND TO THOSE

  • what faction best fits this line?

    • centauri
    • cabal
    • monolith
    • io
    • fringe
  • what type of vessel should say this/when?

    • station when passing by
    • patrol vessel passing by
    • patrol vessel in combat
    • merchant passing by
    • other (please fill out: __________)
  • what is the line?
