#Saving in Blockbench removes "handheld" model parent to export valid model

Heya! Im doing some work that requires me to have the parent of my models be minecraft:item/handheld AND it is guaranteed that it does work in game but whenever I need to edit my model in blockbench and I save it, I get the attached notification and it removes the parent and I have to add it back in by other means like notepad++. I figured I could either bring some visibility to it if its a bug or could be enlightened as to why I'm running into this issue.

Its nice to have safe guards like this in place but obviously becomes difficult when theyre actually impeding me from what I want to accomplish. Maybe a toggle to turn this safeguard off would be helpful?

I added elements

If you add any elements to the model there is your problem.
Cause that would clash with the texture extrusion behaviour of item/handheld (or better said builtin/generated, which it parents)

I can understand that but the problem is it isnt clashing

#

I add the parent that BB removes right back in and it functions correctly

What's the result ingame if you manually add back the parent?

#

Does it ignore the texture extrusion behavior and only render your added elements?

yea I remove the element that is the extruded texture part so it doesnt cause any issues. Basically, Im making an enchanted outlines pack and want the display stuff to be consistent with the item its wrapped around so I just use the same parent those items are using

#

I understand how this automatic process could be helpful but thats why im saying something along the lines of a "I know what im doing and if it breaks its on me" button would be awesome haha

Hmm, I thought there were issues with mixing parents with that behavior like that 🤔.
As a workaround, you could make your own custom handheld parent with just the display settings to parent I guess?

I could do that, I just didnt want to bloat my files needlessly

#

and the issue is I need this to work with other packs that modify the handheld or generated models

#

Its possible there are adverse affects in older versions of Minecraft but I havent encountered them in 1.21.4-1.21.6 at the very least

You could suggest that toggle/setting in #bb-feedback-archive or the Github issues.

Wasn't even aware that was a feature in Blockbench til now 😅 (does sound like it's relatively new though?)
