The transparent/invisible parts of my model look fine when I am holding it in my hand, but once I actually place the block onto the ground the parts that would be transparent go black

blocks in Minecraft are sorted into different "render layers", which determine what sort of textures they support
If you are adding this block with a mod, you should have the option to change its render layer from solid (which makes transparent pixels black) to cutout or cutout_mipped
I'm not entirely sure how you do that because that depends on how you are adding this block
