Friend of mine asked if it was possible to change the overlay texture that displays when teleporting into or out of the Nether in 1.21 (too saturated, kinda flash bangs them whenever they teleport)
I couldn't find any texture that matched this in base files besides the nether_portal.png so I remapped the portal block to a new texture and changed nether_portal.png to be less obtrusive.
However, changing nether_portal.png does not affect this overlay. Does anyone know where this texture is stored, or if it can be overwritten with a resource pack?

so I tried some stuff out just now and it seems that the overlay uses the particle texture from the "nether_portal_ns" model
hm so I tried changing the blockstates file to use a different model
but it just uses the particle of the block model that's used there
the particle textures those models use is still just the nether_portal.png texture, which upon changing to something like a solid white texture, does not change the overlay
no I tried changing the particle textures to something different than what the models uses
and it used the particle texture
I was able to get the overlay to be a crafter face
just by changing the particle texture
