It sounds like you're probably going to want to use the extruded texture function.
Import the sprite and it'll automatically make the geometry for you

cant be bothered to manually align the uv

I don't even know how you managed to do that. 
If you select all of the UVs and shrink them down it should be fine.
oh i made a seperate texture for the extruded texture
but didnt want to use 2 different textures
only problem is my base texture is twice the size
and it scales all the uvs seperately rather than treating it as one object
oh but if i do each side of each part seperately it works...
Extrude the base texture and remove the generated parts you don't need.
Transform > Scale
(After selecting the blade part elements)
