Main Ability - Shadow Magic, Dapperness
With the help of his signature book, the Codex Umbra, and a magical residue called t h E F U E L nightmare fuel, Maxwell can fragment his mind into shadow clones. These shadow clones, known as puppets, have four different varieties: the Miner for mining, the Logger for chopping, the Digger for digging, and the Duelist for combat. These puppets will last indefinitely until they are killed and will help out with chores and fights depending on their type. Maxwell can only maintain up to four puppets at a time.
Additionally, being a dapper fellow, Maxwell's sanity constantly regenerates when it isn't full. This is helpful in preventing him from going past the insanity threshold. This also enables him to mess with sanity intensive activities, such as magic, rather safely. It is, however, arguably a downside as well, since Maxwell must go insane for the nightmare fuel necessary for his puppets.

Downsides - Physical Frailty, Mind Fracturing
Maxwell boasts the lowest hp stat in the game (tied with Wes, a joke character), making him very susceptible to dying when one is not adequately prepared. Additionally, fracturing his mind to create puppets reduces his maximum sanity as long as said puppets are active. This makes him more vulnerable to insanity, which can be dangerous when combined with his low hp. This is, however, arguably an upside, as Maxwell needs to go insane to obtain the nightmare fuel necessary for his puppets.
