Game won't launch after NT update (WORKAROUND FOUND)

The trickiest part to remember is that when you're looking at the workaround logs, HCCU means the Maple2 user and not the primary user

which you normally can't view with loading the profile

These are the different registry keys that it reads when running as Maple2
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\Disallowed\Certificates
HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\Disallowed\Certificates

It wants to read these but they don't exist
HKCU\Software\Classes\Software\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\Disallowed\Certificates
HKCU\Software\Classes\Software\Policies\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\Disallowed\Certificates

Which is dumb, cause they're empty keys and are identical on both users

The VAST majority of registry queries are made to the primary user's hive so it's probably something to do with the appdata folder. Judging by how purging everything related to Nexon didn't help, I'm thinking it's more to do with how the maplestory.exe (or related process) interacts with appdata or maybe even programdata

see that's the funny thing about that log. I posted it when I didn't fully understand it. [S-1-5-21-2204867410-3023045423-2841006329-1001] is the SID of my primary user

so running the game under Maple2, reads registry keys realted to the primary user, and runs successfully

everything you see with that SID is the primary user's stuff

1. maplestory does NOT check the contents of the temp folderes it uses
2. maplestory generates temp files and blindly calls those files on successful file creation

which I gues makes sense to prevent the game from running on critical configs that were tampered with

so if that's true then the maplestory.exe process lacks permissions to the folders? but I'm pretty sure we did permissions stuff already

Soo here's some detailed instructions (it also doesn't create an administrator account with "1" as password)

1. Open Windows Powershell as administrator.
2. Run 'net user Maple2 * /add' without quotations.
3. Enter a password for the new user.
4. Run 'net localgroup Administrators Maple2 /add' without quotations.
5. Close Powershell
6. Make sure you are fully closed out of your Launcher (Check Task Manager)
7. Find the Launcher's shortcut on your desktop. Make one if you don't have it.
8. Shift + Right click on the shortcut and choose "Run as Different User"
9. Enter the Username, 'Maple2' and the password you set in step 3; Click Ok.
10. Your Launcher should start up.
11. Log in to your launcher using your normal credentials.
12. Configure the launcher to use your game library. If you left your game library at the default location (or if you don't know what this means), then you can skip this step
13. Clicking on "Download" OR "Verify Game Files" OR "Update" will cause your launcher to check the install folder and realize that the game is already there.
14. You should be able to launch the game

When you run Maple, it usually asks for administrator permissions. Normally you won't need to input any thing and can just click "Yes". If it DOES ask for a password, use the Maple2 credentials created earlier.
You will continue to have the same issues if you use the credentials for your primary user account.

• Sometimes the launcher will briefly act like it's launching but will close.

  1. Right click on the shortcut and open Properties
  2. Go to the "Compatability" tab and click on "Change settings for all users"
  3. Check the box for "Run this program as an administrator"
  4. Click Apply
  5. Click Apply (again)
  6. Make sure there aren't any lingering processes related to the launcher and try to open it.

Steam specific info:

• If you are using a controller, you will need to follow the steps for "Sometimes the launcher will briefly act like it's launching but will close." above.

Simply pause/cancel the download, look for the new location where the launcher expects the game files, and move your existing game files there. Verify game files and you should be good to go.

  1. Right click on the shortcut and open Properties.
  2. Go to the "Compatability" tab and click on "Change settings for all users".
  3. Check the box for "Run this program as an administrator".
  4. Click Apply.
  5. Click Apply (again).
  6. Make sure there aren't any lingering processes related to the launcher and try to open it.

Additional info:

I heard from someone that it could be your windows firewall ( I have had this issue before) where I turned off fire wall and run maple then I turned it back on once the PC registered the game

imo the closest thing to root cause we have is that the game fails to start blackcipher so it just closes by itself

so we would need to figure out why a new user allows the game's process to launch blackcipher. Two options are registry or something in the appdata folders.

idk why but Nexon Launcher uses ephemeral configs in appdata\roaming and there's really no indication for what is the basis for those configs. I assume similar things are going on for maple but I don't have evidence to back that up

As you should be, since Inkwell reassured us he will continue throwing resources at things nobody wants, and half-ass the bread-and-butter of making the game work.

To be fair, this kind of "game doesn't launch" bug is pretty hard to fix, because (I assume) it "works on my machine" for all Nexon's testers and devs. So they can only go over whatever code was changed in v262 and try to use whatever info they get from players to figure out what's breaking the new code and how to fix it.

 After installing the latest MapleStory patch (v.262.1.1), the game instantly crashes on launch when using my main Windows account. Event Viewer consistently reports an access violation (0xc0000005) in MapleStory.exe.

If I log into a different Windows user account, the game launches normally. On my main account, however, the game does not appear to start BlackCipher (NGS) at all, which seems to cause the crash.

Verified integrity of game files (Steam) / Repair installation (Nexon Launcher)

Fully uninstalled and reinstalled MapleStory on both Steam and Nexon Launcher

Deleted and redownloaded the BlackCipher folder

Confirmed folder/file permissions → both my user and SYSTEM have Full Control

Ran game and launcher with Administrator privileges

Disabled overlays (Steam, Discord, MSI Afterburner, GeForce Experience)

Cleared cache/config folders under %AppData%, %LocalAppData%, ProgramData, Documents, and VirtualStore

Reset screen mode/resolution settings in registry

Clean boot test (disabled all non-Microsoft services and startup programs)

Checked Data Execution Prevention settings (DEP set to default)

It should be a lot easier for them (than for us) to figure it out, since they have their source diff's from v261, that worked, to v262 (although it seems the change is in the launchers, not the game or anti-cheat themselves?). They just need to actually take the issue seriously, instead of dismissing it as "users being stupid".

not sure if it'll work, but log in to the maple2 user, then launch the game normally. Mute the game through windows sound mixer.
now go back to your primary profile, then use the shortcut edit trick from the doc but add runas /profile /user:Maple2 instead of what the doc says

The mixer settings are stored in the maple2's registry which doesn't get fully loaded without that /profile flag. The shift+right click method doesn't add any flags to runas.exe, so maple2's flag doesn't get fully loaded

Whatever changes you make to the mixer for maple should persist after that I think (plus you don't need to shift right click any more. Just open the shortcut normally)

uhh I am not the brains behind the work around, only thing i can think of is make sure you go into powershell as admin

anyways following the directions in there you should be able to create an additional user, only thing I had to log into the other user for was to change its default browser to chrome since I log in through an account
