this was extensively discussed at the time, supporting both isn't happening

see the document posted in the #announcements related to the reasoning for this change

I'll also add that the randomizer itself is open source, and anyone who wants to run a pre-FastROM version for their own use can do so

Uhhh... there was a huge amount of response from the dev team.

re: 'disregarded and abandoned' - yep, this project is not run by the community, the devs decide what's implemented and do it, and they're in the position to make decisions like that solely because they put in the work to make the previous versions

#

if that's a dealbreaker for you, and if there are really that many people who quit over the lack of SlowROM, that sounds like a great opportunity to start your own randomizer project that does things better

#

you can make all the decisions

On the subject, I gather that League is the last tournament running on SlowROM and it'll go away shortly after League concludes?

proper lark
#

pretty much immediately

#

probably the very next update

#

but i don't make website decisions

#

man if you guys think fastrom is too fast, you should see what a little bit of me rewriting the game can do

#

I've got the iris wipe running basically lagless

#

it feels uncomfortable

#

I've quadrupled the speed of overworld decompression

marsh thorn
#

Damn, this was rather unproductive

placid scaffold
#

what would count as productive, getting your way?

proper lark
#

fastrom isn't "modern" by any means

cosmic burrow
#

as mentioned, this is a topic that was discussed at length at the time (months ago)

proper lark
#

it's just what happens if you spend a few extra cents per chip

#

and if you're like me, you can push the code even further

cosmic burrow
#

the compromise was to allow existing tournaments (including League which was at the time about to start) to use SlowROM

proper lark
#

which is basically all that we do here

marsh thorn
#

Sorry that I even brought this up again?

placid scaffold
#

and again, the code's there, anyone who wants to run a version of the rando that's permanently on SlowROM can do it

#

you just don't get to demand that the VT website does

cosmic burrow
#

you're right that the change was somewhat divisive among the racing community but it kinda is what it is, and there are reasons behind the change

proper lark
#

the pre fastrom lag was nowhere near vanilla either

#

and 90% of the game isn't that laggy anyways

#

of course, they wouldn't let me say that in the announcement essay 😔

proper lark
#

You are forgiven.

People are frustrated with the decision and it makes me sad to see lots of people stop playing something

placid scaffold
#

be their hero, maintain a fork

marsh thorn
#

I’m just advocating for what their concerns/issues are

#

If I came off as attacky, that wasn’t my intention

#

I don’t code, which is why I even mentioned it.

placid scaffold
#

the nature of something like this is that some people won't like it, and that's a cost of making decisions about a project like this

proper lark
#

something like this?

#

people don't like any change we make

placid scaffold
#

that's not an excuse to never make big changes

cosmic burrow
#

I haven't seen anything in TARC on this in awhile, for example

placid scaffold
#

sometimes those big changes are necessary, and this one was

cosmic burrow
#

it all just blew over once the temporary fix was implemented for league

#

and if you're not at least somewhat racing-aligned then fastrom kinda feels like a win IMO?
