#Retrotink 5x at 1080p

Question for folks who use a retrotink 5x w/ a 1080p monitor: Do you use the 1080p under, over, or scaled mode? To summarize, under is a true 4x (doesn't fill the vertical height of the screen), over is a 5x and discards the overscan areas on the top/bottom of the screen, and fill scales the image/does some nearest neighbor scaling to fit the vertical height of the screen.

I'm mostly curious if anyone uses 1080p over and if any important visual queues or information is lost to overscan.

Overscan is more like a CRT with respect to information lost. Nothing in ALTTPR is affected by it, but SMZ3 does lose a little bit of the HUD due to the crop.

That makes sense. I've heard that it's "generally fine" due to that crt factor you mention, but was curious about alttp specifically

Yeah there will be some cutoff, but you won't lose any of the HUD itself

I use 1440p myself, but did use 1080p Over when the 5X first came out

I've basically always used fill and never given it much thought beyond that since it looks pretty good

#

I have to fight though remembering to swap to the h.sampling to the SNES one since it defaults to generic

I opt for a manual crop as well since I'm kind of obsessed with image. 1440p, optimal scaling, manual phase, etc.

I need to spend 2 min to fix that

Profiles were a very welcome addition to the 5X. I have 4 of them depending on which console and cable I'm using at the moment

Depending on your specific console, Fill may require manual cropping to eliminate overscan noise visible when going between light and dark worlds.

Interesting

My SNES Jr. didn't need it, but my 1-chip SFC does.

The short answer is fiddle with whatever you think looks good in your screen/capture.

The benefit of the retrotink is that it basically "just works" and anything beyond that is gravy of getting it perfect

that's good to hear

Pool does a lot of tinkering, I do much less and am pretty content

#

Hell I haven't even updated the firmware in some time because my setup makes it a pain to do

Very true. Most of what I do is not required to enjoy the result. I just can't help myself.

#

Looking forward to the upcoming Tink 4K to make my obsession even a deeper rabbit hole

I straight to can't even think to want to hook my consoles up to my 4k tv.

I have the LG C1 like he was doing some initial development with and was amused by the constant trolling it was giving him with the hidden settings

I should probably consider a 1440p monitor, I'll go measure my desk again lol. When I bought this desk I wasn't envisioning a multi-monitor setup unfortunately

this is the kind of #inspo pic I need 😤

I've at least gotten rid of the two left monitors stands and replaced with a mounting arm to reclaim space

But the right is a dedicated TV for my SNES and Switch
