it supports XP, Vista and Win7

#

and I saw on many forums it's NOT a good Idea using them on windows 8 and higher

flat grove
#

shouldn't be a problem on win 10 then
unless the installer or the program at startup has a check that only allows specific versions

#

and I saw on many forums it's NOT a good Idea using them on windows 8 and higher
why?

latent aurora
#

Because the Adapters aren't recognised then or the software may be pretty unstable or doesn't work even

flat grove
#

so install the drivers for the adapter that are compatabile with win 8 / 10 then

latent aurora
#

well, he can't give me them, that's okay and even if, I don't have a car what I could "test"

#

so yeah, I just have to work on theory, he has to work with my theory then

#

so yeahhh, I prefer being on the safe side instead of making more problems as needed though

flat grove
#

well, then go ahead and try setting up a vm. But always keep in mind that passing through adapters is a pain.
Which hypervisor are you going to use? Oracle VBox? Hyper-V? VMWare?

latent aurora
#

I will try first Hyper-V, that is pretty easy to set up for me, VMWare would have been my second opinion then 😄

flat grove
#

hyper-v sounds fine, especially if the maching rune win10 pro natively

latent aurora
#

it will

#

I don't use home versions neither I ever used them 😄

I'd find it hard to believe that Windows 10 isn't supported on that. I've installed 10 on systems that are half my age and I'm quite old thisisfine

tiny niche
#

At first I was confused when I read that, but then I remembered that my fibre internet technician came to me with a brick of a laptop with Windows to run a VM with another Windows version (one of these was Windows 7 I believe) to do some magic on the line and installing the modem. And there I was thinking FTTH was new technology 🙈

# latent aurora it will

He using software like Kess, etc?
It's the adaptors that have driver issues. He could try an internet browser that isn't Chromium based, that could be your issue

latent aurora
#

Well, no, it's not that software. And I can't tell you which one, as I have an agreement with him 😅 but I will try these days to back everything up, make a clean install with win10 pro, enables hyper-x or install VMWare and use the old OS as installation for the VM afterwards. Gladly I have the Adapter between Car & Computer with me, so I can pass it thru pretty easily 😄

distant zodiac
#

Likely ripped software and very common in alot of garages tbh since software is extortionately expensive unfortunately. Windows XP is actually the more common OS for most garages for the exact reason of compatibility. Not that I'd recommend it, but has he tried downgrading to XP and installing the unofficial patches, etc.

#

When I had a car which had constant issues, I had an old laptop, obd adaptor and software (forscan, elmconfig and foccus). My old laptop fried itself, getting the drivers to work for the adaptor on windows 10 was a proper pain. Ended up having to ask the manufacturer for an updated driver which took weeks to even get a reply. They had a driver, and a dodgy way of installing it by allowing unsigned drivers, etc. It did work, but by then I got rid of the car lol

#

The software itself ran no problems, just the adaptor which has issues on win10

latent aurora
#

Well, he didn't tried XP yet, but I guess, XP is worser than Win 7 as XP is unsupporter for longer and most probably easier to attack as win7 though. But now I keep on using win10 as main, win7 for the two softwares he has to use. I just hope, that does work then 😄

distant zodiac
#

He could try Opera, that tends to work on anything

Depends a bit on where you live though. In big cities I guess this holds true since there is almost full 4G coverage for all providers while DSL sucks, at least in my city (except for my apartment building which has 5G coverage and fibre sticking out of my second floor apartment wall 🙈 built in 2017 so that's why).
But in smaller cities like where my parents live, they get decent internet up to 250/40 while there is no 4G reception at the house from the same provider. So in general in smaller cities and rural areas the mobile coverage is not perfect while at least DSL tends to be better

remote estuary

It depends really, mobile data is the only choice in rural areas sometimes. You can also get "radio fiber" internet with satellite dish type of equipment, which I had for a while.

tiny niche

It kinda makes me think that if they charge me 35€/mo. for 100/50 but can offer me 1000/200 for 80€ even though that wouldn't change much for them on the technical side apparently since they can't overbook that line, it's a bit overpriced 🙈 but well I'm no expert on that topic so I could be missing something. I'm just happy to have a super stable connection, 4 ms ping in speedtests and 8-9 ms to TruckersMP servers, I don't really need more speed tbh. 😁

laptops are not as customizable as desktop pcs. I suggest you check out multiple brands (dell,hp,razer...etc) and compare their prices/performance in your budget. frozen mantle

The point I’m trying to make is the fact that they try aim their products at ordinary people.. people who are going to upgrade these 2 years from when they purchase it

They are aiming on people that can pay them more and more as frequently as possible.

dusty timber
frozen mantle

dusty timber
#

Mac Pros are targeted to maximize performance

hidden shell
#

Probably to stop people from running windows natively on their machine :)

agile ermine
#

they created the M1 chip for one reason : it brings them more money

#

Mac pros are performance oriented, but that doesn't means they're fast... people buy powerful macs only because some softwares on macos are better than their windows equivalent

frozen mantle
distant sparrow
distant sparrow
sinful monolith
#

the real reason for M1 is that having control over the entire hardware+software stack gives a lot more control than using someone else's hardware platform with your own software

gleaming parrot
#

also smaller process

#

and graphics performance that can hit low-mid tier dedicated gpu levels

#

big.LITTLE is a nice to have if you dont do anything heavy and need longer battery life

agile ermine
#

saying that something doesn't brings you more money because it's sold in "low end" products is completely false imo

distant sparrow
#

I just meant that I think the main reason behind the M1 was that it would be a massively successful product

#

Developing a chip is incredibly expensive too....

agile ermine
#

I mean... you don't develop something if you don't think it will be successful 🙂

#

also, I don't think it was that expensive to develop the M1 chip, because they already have a lot of experience with ARM chips, and the M1 has probably a lot of things in common with their A13 chip

distant sparrow
agile ermine
#

Actually, I'm wrong, the M1 is a 5nm chip, I thought it was 7nm

#

so it's basically an A14 chip with higher frequencies and 2 extra high performance cores

distant sparrow
#

10w vs 6w

#

that's a very substantial difference in tdp

agile ermine
#

14W, actually

#

but that's what it takes to increase the frequency and add extra high power cores

agile ermine
#

in terms of raw performances, I'd say the Aorus is better

#

I'm seriously worried about the cooling capabilities of these machines, though, since they're only 15' laptops

sand valley
#

Ok

sand valley
