F1 is the perfect place for synthetic fuels, but I don't think they'll ever get much further. Costs will always be untenable due to the energy required to synthesize the fuel.
Perhaps with scale costs might reduce, but it's not industrial processes it's chemistry and you can't really skip steps.
Hydrogen Combustion is more likely to work at scale than synthetic fuels that's how ludicrous it all is

Hydrogen is a simple energy problem. Electrolysis to get it from water is simple, understood, but energy inefficient. But so is oil refining, and Motorsport has leant on that exclusively until 2014.
I seriously hope SOMEONE in the FIA is looking into the Toyota hydrogen Combustion technology as a possible avenue for the future of combustion Motorsport.
Big problem, sustainability wise, is that it is far far simpler and cheaper to just buy oil and crack those hydrocarbons apart to make hydrogen.
