My current aim is to get the Shelby and Skyline, but that's it so far.

Stick with your starters for now

They should get you through battle machine for now and the end events will get you more cars

one event will get you either the Golf GTi or the 350Z, the Golf would be best for grip and you can swap the 240SX to drift

The other gets you either the IS 350 or the Chevelle, I dunno which is better though

The IS is decent for grip but the Chevelle is decent for drag

It's up to you though

Since you have the Civic/Cobalt so it's an upgrade

It's hard to say Frankly

Early game however

I'd were talking cars you can just win by doing the rental events

There's the 180SX which you should convert to drift

There's the Cobalt which does well in Grip

There's the Golf which is also an excellent grip car

The Lexus and 350Z ain't really any good for grip or any case

But the 350Z is amazing for Drag events

And so is the Chevelle

You won't be needing a speed car yet do I'd say this is what you gotta do

I personally went for Grip Coblat, Drift 240SX and Drag Chevelle

The IS350 may be decent for drift too if you wanna go that route

But none of these cars will do you any good for speed events, so just wait until you get into react team sessions and either pick the M3 E46 or the Supra

Though the Supra is also the best Drag car so there's that you can consider

The Lexus is decent for grip

The 350Z is fun but the Golf is better off

But to keep it short and sweet
Grip - Golf
Drag - Chevelle
Drift - 240SX
Speed - don’t worry about it yet

Don’t worry about speed until you get to that point, when you do, buy an RX-7

It happened to me too back when I played and left the wingman active near the end of the race

I believe it's how their AI is coded. When you have a crewmate with you, the game wants to have them try and keep up with you. So if you're really far ahead, the game will slingshot them forward so you can use their abilities when you need them. Unfortunately, it can also lead them to taking the win from you, which is technically a win for your crew, but it's still annoying.

Moreso with scouts since their schtick is being active at all times, and lead through shortcuts, which requires them to be in front of you.
