Thoughts on a map rotation for the random farming aswell? We would strip down the current map so we would have the same size and just remake it with different terrain.

Ive got 2 maps ready for the Jungle update so far, Still need to do the second 10x map and the Boat Wars map.
This is a preview of 1 of the 10x maps.
And the Random Farming map.
The jungle on the 10x is quite big but we made sure to have areas where there are like basically close to no swing trees to make it so players can still make pretty big bases there.

We are also planning to do that map rotation thing over the next 1-3 months hopefully.
It really depends on when i can get some more maps done and how long it will take me.
I will make 1 more 10x map before that, And then move on to 2 more random farming maps, So we have 3 maps per server. And from that point slowly work on 1-2 more maps for both of them. The ideal goal would be to have 5 maps per server on a random rotation.
And yes that means that sometimes it will have the same map twice in a row.

The main thing now is that as soon as it wipes everyone just rushes to do the same exact thing every wipe, and most of the time build in the exact same spot every wipe.

Not really possible no, and that kinda removes the point of the map rotation.
The rotation is meant to make it so its not very predictable and the same thing over and over.

Well, Realistically all maps will have a river which will be buildable, That has also been added to the other 10x map now.
However they will likely always be in the jungle going forward.
Because it just fits the theme of it and looks very good and functional.
Yeah but that was hated the most for the first wipe, Especially since it wasnt really up the standard at that point due to me just placing the cliffs etc to make it compatible with the rock update a few months before that.
And then as you know i added more monuments and improved it.
And that will be the same thing now, If players notice a map isnt good enough and needs improving we will likely do so.

And yes jungle is pretty big on both of them, However on the first map ( with missile silo in it ) majority isnt buildable anyways and the parts that are have limited swing trees around purely to atleast free up space for big buildable areas.

Both maps also have a new overgrown cargo monument.
Also with a locked crate and just a bunch of crates in general.

But the buildblock isnt super big.
Should be less as a grid out.
So you can build fairly close to it.
Has a locked crate aswell.
And these are basically the buildblocks on the map that has missile silo in it.
I just had to roughly place the cargo one due to RustMaps not supporting custom build block zones :)
But yeah as you can see here, River is essentially fully buildable from the road down. ( the part between silo and the ziggurat monument is also a custom buildblock )
And with this point, That will still be possible.
Players will still have their standard build spots per map.
And as it will still be the same 5 ish maps on rotation it will just be a suprise which map it is at that point. But the buildspots will likely be the same anyways.
Another note to add here, With this new update we will be turning on Animal AI but reduce their dmg.
Just to add onto the feeling of rust a bit.
This will be for all servers.
The new Crocodiles, Panthers, Tigers & snakes will give us the perfect reason to do so and should make it pretty fun.

Animals were never disabled due to performance but mainly due to the servers just not really needing them. But as mentioned its a perfect time to turn the AI on with these new ones.
Those being all the damages for animals btw.
As a reference, Even a snake does ~20 dmg by default.
Another note on the jungle update, Currently there is no way for us to see / know if the swing trees are to close or to far away from eachother without manually testing them all ingame. So there could be to many of them to close to eachother im not sure.
Hopefully i get a visual indicator at some point to be able to optimize the amount of those trees a bit.

We design our maps specifically for the type of server, So for example random farming is much denser in terms of trees / nodes to help with the random farming.
that map sucks for random farming, you'd have to buff the map a lot.
So on top of the 10x map being WAY to big for the random farming, It just wont work.

Being chased by 5 wolves on random farming sever has been a unique experience. This has created more PVP gunshots shots and sounds giving away player locations
Shouldnt even be possible as they up until now they shouldnt roam in groups larger as 2.
But at the end of the day realistically animals are a part of rust and have to be dealt with.
They already do significantly less damage.
btw when i killed a polar another one spawns then attacks me like tf?
Thats just unlucky timing then.
There is a max amount of polars on the map in general, if one dies it can respawn but usually that takes a bit.

Apart from some potential changes, I gotta be honest this might be our best map for the 10x if we optimize it a bit.
No caves yet, Still gotta do those but just testing it in current state.
Also as a few notes, The middle is fairly empty and open which is done on purpose to preserve as much buildspace as possible, Same goes for the middle part of desert.

We are very limited with what we can do with the biomes, there isnt rlly any layout that would make any sense

All biomes now also have a hill which take up a decent amount of space, Orginally yesterday the hill that is now in the snow was in the jungle but that made less sense to me.
The jungle is now majority flat.
The river is also much longer, You can build in the grass / snow area or in the jungle area of it just to give players some options.
These being the hills, And if you look at it that way that already reduces those biomes quite a bit in size of pure flat areas. apart from the desert that area is still VERY big.
What would you think of a map testing server btw? Just a pure vanilla server where you can just fly around in godmode to look at maps we test / work on. Purely for feedback purposes etc.

As an extra note on this, Obviously our maps are much smaller as other servers so its harder to equally spread biomes and still have them make sense in the sense of positioning.

But this new map in general terrain wise and overal layout is alot better quality as our other maps, Ive thought about things a bit more. And yes it might still lack a thing or two but that will always happen and we can still improve things depending on feedback.

No resources are needed and upkeep is off so things dont decay.

We now have a Map testing server. Its a very simple server but i will list some info and commands that can be used there.

Upkeep & build cost is off so you can build without cost and things do not decay.
/noclip | Enable noclip.
/heal | Heal to 100 HP.
/build | Get a Building Plan & Hammer.
/tc | Get a Tool Cupboard.
/farm | Get items to make a farm
/power | Get some basic electricity items.
/ak | Get an ak & ammo, You cant damage players with this.
/teleport <playername> | Teleport to a player.
/day | Change your clientside time to day
/night | Change your clientside time to night
/now | Change your clientside time back to the current server time.
All commands have a cooldown.
Right clicking on the map lets you teleport to that location.
If maps are tested and issues / bugs are found we will reward players depending on the severity and if it has already been reported.

Have now added more trees to the desert & snow so those are a bit better, And terrain issues are fixed. So i think the map is essentially done.
All animal numbers are vanilla and we will keep them that way atm.

Any way to work on map optimisation? I've noticed I'm regular 30fps on this newer of the 3 maps when before on the other 2 I'd be around 90-120fps

It would be large oil rig in that case, And i would add rocks around it to be able to enter from multiple positions and would remove ball on top to remove the possibility to camp on it etc.

Theres 1 big cave in the grass area, I hope that one works and doesnt ruin to much buildspace on top but will see when its on test server, Might have to replace it with a regular cave.
There is now an early version of the new RF map loading on the map testing server purely for some testing and checking if theres more changes needed.

The version on the map testing server now is a fairly final version. i think most big issues are out, So its just fixing small things and potentially changing small things.
So i can be checked out & tested for whoever want to do so.
It does look like bradley doesnt wanna spawn on the glacier though, Spawns below it lol.

Added a gas station there, and another supermarket opposite, So there is basically 1 more gas station and supermarket compared to the current version.
And i made sure the buildblock doesnt overlap the river so that is still fully functional.

I ain't a massive fan as the main monuments or t3 monuments will more or less be the middle of the map. While the ocean is avaliable with oilrig the main monuments in the middle will have the possibility to be grabbed Insanely or become difficult to loot due to the amount of ppl gonna be there tryna loot. Adding in another t3 monument like the overgrown cargo or missle silo would be beneficial in my view π

I find that through most wipes that the oceans are very quiet and usually after the first 3-4 hours of a wipe are very quiet in terms of people using rigs and underwater labs is basically unused apart from me and my group because it's secretly op

Nah we bought it somewhere and modified it a bit, but even then there arent really any custom monuments that fit in the middle either.

The maps are made with our default things such as them being fairly circular with a circle road all the way around and for the rest everything is adjustable depending on player suggestions / feedback

The issue is the buildzones now, Gonna have to remove the custom godrock in the desert.
as its buildblocked.
The other map is now also basically done, Just finishing some things for it.
I didnt reduce snow on that map as that wouldve forced me to have to move an entire hill part there which takes much more time for like no change.
But now its time for yall to stop complaining about map size :)
