oooh Tapestry of Fate is also out today; this month is really raining book releases huh
DCC 8 is out (I guess I should read the final version) as is Crypt Currency on KU (which I just started from the kickstarter)
A great week for self published stuff.
Parade of Horribles... 3 I guess? Audible is being funky with the chapters: ||So Chandra's trying to pull a Britney on Donut eh? Hmm I wonder how Matt feels about that||
oh I love when an audiobook is new and so everything is just "track 1, track 2, track 3"
All Hail Chaos is out!
Yep
I should say, three big/relevant to me releases
there are book releases every Tuesday
my wallet asks not to be reminded of this fact
Ayy it updated!
PoH 3 (for real this time): ||Oh poor Donut. I can't imagine what she's going through. That war crime spell is going to haunt her||
TINAMD spoilers big ||Well she does get divorced, of a sort…||
Is the midnight library good?
PoH 5: ||Ooh we're getting consequences for DeeeeeeeWATAAAAAHH! This will be good||
DCC through This Inevitable Ruin ||honestly I just did a re-listen from February to April and I've already forgotten so much again||
PoH 6: ||Wait. The same driver can't drive twice in a row. What happens if only 1 team member makes it across the finish line?||
Here's a recap/summary of Dungeon Crawler Carl books 1 through 7 to help you prepare for the upcoming release of DCC 8, A Parade of Horribles!

00:00 - How to use this recap
CHARACTERS AND GROUPS
01:31 - Carl
05:19...
There’s a 1 hour recap
I haven’t even finish the first book yet!
Yeah, that was for jmcgit haha but if you’re going straight through, you may not need that
lol.
yeah, that's not really the kind of thing I watch, but thanks anyway
I wish I can finish this book but maybe sometime when I can have full reading
I can't wait to see y'all hit the end of PoH.
This book is a wild ride (pun intended)
PoH end general ||Mat said at an event he ended up scrapping the last bit of the boom and going with the wildest possible version he had come up with. It shows.||
So, turns out I misread. Not signed and numbered but...
Just started Two Towers and in the book version ||when Aragon, Gimli, and Legolas met Éomer and say they're looking for hobbits one of his companions goes, "Hobbits? You mean creatures of children's tales?"
Buddy. You're talking to an elf. ||
||Theres elves all over, but hobbits almost never leave the shire or interact with the outer world||
||I know, I just always find it funny when characters in fantasy settings dismiss something as being too fanciful||
this is my book store emailing me trying to push me to "buy this books that we know are in your mind"
I have all 3, I even bought two of these IN YOUR STORE
pls
PoH 20: ||A province boss?!?! I know everyone is OP at this point, but are they this OP?||
with all the data that gets collected on consumers these days I feel like "know that I purchased your (typically only bought once) product and stop advertising it to me" is a reasonable ask idk
yeah lol
I'm currently reading the leftmost
but I didn't buy it there (not that one nor the previous one on the series)
So it's also kinda funny it's telling me to buy book 2 in a series for which it shouldn't know whether I have book 1 or not
It's also, in hindsight, funny that the Kingfisher book it's recommending me is the only one I've bought from them lol
She's gotta be the author I've read the most without buying any of the books
my library has always available copies for half of them and the rest are usually available or short wait
PoH 21: ||That wasn't that bad||
Kingfisher is who got me to update my Libby account to my new local library
Yeah, well, I don't live in US so most of her books aren't available in print here anyhow, but definitely more than just Nettle & Bone
oh my god
I did the bad thing of going and to look up what's available
why is this cover so gorgeous!?
@buoyant whale
👀
There's a total of 8 books that I can buy in print (in spanish), which is very little compared to her catalogue
she also just has a ton of books like I hadn't even heard of this one
Well, that's a skill issue on your part 😌
That's one of her old fairytales retellings
you might have seen this cover
If you've ever seen it at all
I also don't even know which ones are all available necessarily since she would be in what minimum 4 different sections of the bookstore
Assassin's Apprentice finished, 4.5/5, huge fun, can't wait to read more
I saw this and omg YES!!!!!
Showed that snake who's bo- princess
DCC Book 7 question ||How did Justice Light die, can someone remind me? I remember the trap he set off... 😭 ||
Got my library card but no umbrella academy tho
Gate of feral gods 18 || 1
||
Finished Tommy and Tuppence book one. Really good, really liked it.
Onto Artemis by Andy Weir now.
Reading
DCC ||He activated some trap that destroyed the Nothing and emptied it into the later floors. I think he died when he activated it, but he was also alone on a destroyed 9th floor without a way out at the time, I think?||
The Golden Enclaves 13|| THATS HORRIBLE LIKE WHAT THE HELL. Also im pretty sure this means Orion is a mawmouth||
Finished!
Bookstore haul from today is Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler and Tread of Angels by Rebecca Roanhorse
Octavia Butler my beloved
Was just telling someone* that I’ve never read a book by her that was fantastic and somewhat upsetting
*the only ex im still on good terms with, who called me to gossip about an advice column
did you mean wasnt

The incandescent through chapter 28 || SHOOK. I went back and relistened to chapter 27. I was so not ready for this and it took me a minute to really clock what was going on. This book is peakkkkkkkk ||
This book is absolutely about to take the spot of favorite book of the year so far I think
40 ish minutes to go
👀
mine comes tomorrow 😔
When I am Dictator of World Publishing I will ensure that every book has its number in the series on the spine and that the order of title & author placement on the spine is standardized
Working in a bookstore, the fact that those things are not drove me crazy
Also got up to ch 26 in The Sun and the Star and [+ Heroes of Olympus] ||aww the black edged pages were Nico recalling his time in Tartarus up until he got captured, including meeting Nyx. I know it's shared source material but I'm reminded of Hades the video game when she calls him "son of Hades" (that, and Hypnos is present in the scene). Since they did enter through the Door of Orpheus, I'm wondering if there's lingering doubt about each other...||
@ripe tide did you read the Nico books, btw?
DCC 7||It was Samantha. She accidentally summoned Emberus who then proceeded to set the floor on fire. Justice Light stayed behind to activate the trap and died.||
DCC ||yep, checking it says it was the fire that killed him, but I suppose the question is whether he had another way out if he had another 5 minutes, I suppose he would||
DCC ||Maybe, but he seemed to have kinda given up at that stage. Don't blame him.||
Yeah The Incandescent is definitely my favorite read so far this year
Haha. What a lovely read, damn
It really was! Incandescent all || Walden’s POV was so much fun. The dynamic between her and Lauren was super enjoyable. Even her and Dawbury or whatever the spelling is was a fun dynamic as it was ongoing with Walden being like “I know this is dumb alright? Just gotta get it out of my system this one time” and then proceeding to be like “alright fine not just that one time”. And having the magical school setting from the teacher POV was a breath of fresh air. Really well written book. Fantastic audiobook narration. Super fun twist. Love the way it wrapped up with her and Lauren and their awkward struggle to romance. And the dynamic between Walden and her students was really cute as well. And Walden teaching the phoenix 😂 Really well paced book. Good balance of downtime and big stuff happening. Damn, I loved that ||
Yay for random impulse reads
Anji Kills a King 1
||Mm yes that king was just killed||
Faith of beasts 1 || ah yes sustain a population where not everybody is at an age to have children oh and feed them in the war machine. Also knowing what we know from Livesuit really really changes… everything ||
I did.
Saint of Bright Doors has like, amazing prose, amazing narration, the setting is interesting, the MC is well written and interesting, but it just isn't hooking me in any way.
Like there's all this elements that I feel should defs hook me in but they don't make a whole in my brain that's actually working
I've read half of the book in a "kind of out of curiosity" state?
Like, I want to read more of this descriptions, I'm not not having fun either.
But itd be all the same if I didn't continue reading, too
Reading witness for the dead and the main character walks past a group of cats and one of them said “mrow”
You sure it wasn't Thara?
OMG, a Logen Ninefingers reference. The first law got into the dungeon crawler world
No it was very clearly the cat who mrowed
Are you sure sure!?
Yeah
PoH 71 30 seconds left: ||Oh no. "Linus" is about about to poison everyone isn't he? Or at least try||
Woke up mad about not having winds of winter yet
Has anyone read the Realm of the Elderlings, I just started the Liveship Traders Trilogy and it's a bit slow at the start, so I'm wondering if I should take a break to read Isles of the Emberdark (finally got it); or it will pick up to the engagement levels of the first trilogy and I can power through then go to Isles?
i'd say it definitely does pick up to the same level or higher
Okay that's very promising, I'll stick with it and let the Isles simmer on my shelf for a while
Liveship trilogy was stellar imo. Well worth continuing
oh, I loved Liveship more than I did Farseer (and then Tawny Man is my favorite but needs both prior trilogies for context)
I started Rain Wild Chronicles but not very far into Dragon Keeper
Yes, I think Liveship was better.
Hobb's pacing is generally slow, though, even though I did end up staying up late to finish both Golden Fool and Fool's Fate because Stuff Kept Happening
Liveship was a step up from farseer for me. Tawny man was a step above that.
Echoing the Liveship love, I would put it a lot higher than Emberdark
both do involve boats haha so maybe you're just in a fantasy ship mood
I think probably it depends a bit on the mood, like... I've not read Liveship but if you want a lighter read, I think Emberdark is lighter. Just based on what I have read so far of Hobb, this isn't necessarily a good thing, but y'know sometimes you just want the light thing
I really enjoyed the pace of the second half of Royal Assassin, it was refreshing after a year of Sanderlanching
And thank you everyone, I feel inspired
that's so good
(ReZero Arc 8) ||The chapter that's meant to be his backstory, and it just tells us things we already know about him and then he cuts in and says "I'm not giving you any more than that"
It's so in character||
Gonna try again
What turned you off last time?
PoH 92: ||The AI is terrifying here. He's absolutely insane and has the power of God on his side. But this info dump is positively delicious||
My summary and reactions for DCC chapters 1-3
||I like how it’s like RPGs but also some of the writing was millennial humor but I liked it||
PoH 92 28 minutes in: ||Oh no. No no no no no. Don't kill Prepotente Pony. Not now. Please. No||
||do like the goblin murder tho||
ah, yeah. You haven't met one of the main characters, in a way- get to ch7
DCC general/all ||had to check my copy, that's when Donut finally becomes her own crawler||
DCC (safe for Nathboi): ||The goblin murder is fun||
I did read that chapter on ||donut can talk|| but not finished the rest of the book because I got distracted
Gate of the Feral Gods all: ||I like Donut, but I think my favorite character is Samantha||
I will say the ||tutorial|| drags
it is wild to me that Matt is a pantser writer, who maybe just keeps really good track of everything he's said so far
DCC is a series that very much gets better as it goes along, I’ve always said (minor DCC all) ||the AI is its best character but that really doesn’t become evident until later on||
PoH 94: ||Carl, are you really trying to summon Scolopendra? There's no way this ends well||
Finished chapter 7
||LEVEL 5 STORMING HUNDRED?!?!?! ALL THE ATTACKS?!?!?!||
Finished chapter 8
omg im reading the book faster!
It’s got me hooked!
||I like the toering and hope Carl never gets shoes||
Ok I finished chapter 9
That’s it for today! I’ll read more tomorrow
(Until I do get back on the book)
PoH 96: ||Well that's one way to deal with the Emberus problem||
||Love tally||
Finished Faith of Beasts
This series really shouldn't be as painfully average as it is
Why keep the interesting stuff in the background and only give us narrow slices from incomplete chunks of the story as books
The damn novella was cooler
I liked it but wish I liked the human characters more
There’s really only one I connect with at all
Macbeth spoilers?
obviously
||I mean I assume so? Notably any woman could also kill Macbeth, since the literal quote is "no man of woman born"||
Watching intently as you go through this last bit.
So I’ve suspected for a while that Libby audiobooks are much lower quality but tonight I went to start a new book and the British accent was Britishing hard, which led me to still stumbling in comprehending some stuff being said even after dropping the speed a bunch.
Got home and checked the audible preview and it’s so much clearer.
Libby has you download the book, why is the audio quality so much worse!?
Plus they have the CarPlay bug still where if you hit rewind too many times in rapid succession it jumps back a random number of chapters
Like on one hand yeah it’s free and most of the time the audio is at least still just barely comprehensible enough to not be too much of an issue, and you can generally get around the rewind issue by being slower about rewinding but dang
Guess I’m going to just drop another credit. Getting close to running out so I’ll be able to test out libro.fm soon-ish
(Also the fact that the British accent be Britishing is not a complaint. The narrator is great. It’s just my own auditory processing being bad particularly with the voice being somewhat muffled by whatever Libby is doing)
Still love that Libby exists but I wish I could join the company for a few months just to get into their code base and fix these things lol
This is definitely a "it doesn't save much money on any individual loan but it does in aggregate of millions of them" kind of thing.
Wouldn't be surprised if the publishers also provide worse quality files to Libraries/Libby vs. other outlets.
That’s fair. Hate it, but it’s fair lol
I’m mad I got into DCC late
I’m also mad that I have no stores near me that do release parties!
DCC book 8 sound clip!
Lol, right?
||I crave splooge!!||
||Samantha is one of Matt's two favorite character. The second one is introduced in the next book||
All I've got left are the epilogues
Also, I'm so pleased [Parade of Horribles 57] ||that they got the rights to use "Take On Me" for this book. I know the original patreon post mentioned he had an alternate version of the chapter if they didn't, but after release day I skipped ahead to it and Jeff doesn't disappoint!||
Give the audiobook a go. That's where the $$$ is!
Yeah, I was stoked too
No I did (stopped because I was distracted and busy) I just wanna read it physically again
I do need to read the Backstage at the Pineapple Cabaret bits attached to the Ace tradpub editions, maybe on the next reread
PoH all: ||I wish we could have heard Pony sing||
Just go into a book store and read them all in one go
The fandom will no doubt make this happen in no time.
Oh, my husband got them for me for my birthday (a good problem to have- we keep buying each other books)! I just am reading like... fiftymillion other things
I need to read the final release version but I need to go buy a hardcopy for that.
Currently working through Crypt Currency.
Butcher's Masquerade all: ||Like Wondercrawl!||
Omg this is my song, this is my song!
Usually is, I think like Butchers Masquerade ||Wondercrawl is audiobook only||
No
Only book 1 got the tradpub edition
I think
The rest are hardcovers
Wait book 2 is getting a tradpub release in August
by tradpub I mean they were published by Ace, a traditional publisher. I think you're thinking I meant trade paperback?
Versus the self published versions
Trade paperback
Yes
PoH final epilogue: ||Oh no. They didn't get saved by Hetot. The crawlers ended up in Sheol. Oh that's bad. Juice Box got access to the store||
Yeah the trades will be coming but they usually are delayed by a year in the US market anyways and since the hardcovers dropped really close together I might expect those to be more spaced out.
Mat teased that the last two books are really just one split in two. He said the only real difference here is he can be much meaner with the cliffhanger in between them this way.
DCC 9/10 ||He is going to go on a killing spree I know it.||
could never in a million years have predicted what I would see when I opened this
I feel like you should spoiler the last sentence perhaps?
I will just in case but this is just speculation based on Mat just being like that.
Yeah I just figure it’s best for those of us who haven’t read book 8 yet you know
||Oh it was Forkith not Juice Box. Ok||
Speculation about what’s to come in general I think falls under spoilers just because it’s informed by all that has come to date
Secret skit: ||IT'S PONY SINGING! LET'S GO!!!
He's actually really good. Although Pony seems to be singing a CarlxPony romance song||
DCC Chapter 11:
||the first boss was crazy because it was trash and giant cockroaches||
Oh dang, maybe I will do a DCC 8 reread via audio even though I finished the ebook last month
That’s enough for today.
I’m going to bed
Oh this annoyed me so much when I was reading lol
I think it's one particular chapter that was long in the book and audible had it as two separate chapters (Or the other way round)
We will have it this year
Yeah there’s one chapter in this audible version that’s like an hour long
Right, but it was two chapters in the book
I acquired some books including DCC 8 yesterday. Started DCC 8 last night but I should really go to bed before it is suddenly very late.
No you shouldn't
You should read
Reading good
Maybe but last night I forgot to hydrate and go to bed at a reasonable time.
Keep the trend going? 😬😅
Yeah Im decently sure the extra long one did have a chapter announcement in the middle of it lol.
I don't remember it having one but I do remember being annoyed start of every chapter after it 😭
Like nails on a board
Most audiobooks I've listened to have been off-set by one or two
Usually because of title/credit "chapters" at the start
tbf they usually don't call them chapters in my experience then
Oh I suppose
I think all of the audiobooks I've listened to have just had them labelled as tracks
like if they are not labeled based on the actual contents of the book like this
they just say "Track 1, Track 2, Track 3" not Chapter
presumably that's just the like "under the hood" default labeling and someone has to go in and label them for that player?
cause I've seen it more commonly when I get the book from a lesser known service (i.e. audiobooks.com instead of audible or hoopla instead of libby)
I've actually never seen one labelled with chapter names
Audible has been pretty good about chapter names for a while now
really? how do you get your audiobooks
okay, I finished Death of the Author...
wow okay
random selection but all mine seem labeled
ah yeah I think I've heard that as a specific downside of that service
Like even the secret projects audiobook files that we had to put onto an app called bookplayer has the chapter names
Spotify usually unlabeled
yeah it's weird to me it can't just be made inherent to the audio file via the metadata or something
Speaking of which there are still kindle books where they don’t have real page numbers and it drives me insane
wdym by real page numbers
Kindle has their own like location thing in the bottom left. Most of the time now you can switch it to real page numbers, but that wasn’t common until like the mid to late 2010s

that sounds super annoying
It’s just kinda irritating. You can hide it and go to percentage only but it’s not super common anymore.
Recommend it? I am tempted to try to hit all the hugo nominees this year because I've read 2 of them already.
Optimistic?
I'm not sure how I think others would think of this one. I really connected with the main character but it's also not very sff, or not the way you would expect. I like it, I like to think I see what it is, but I think it's the most different of the nominees
Alr back to reading dcc
DCC: Chapters 12-17
||it’s crazy that there’s a drug war with the goblins and llamas because of donut||
it's kinda funny, I'm not sure either, I don't know if there's a similar book that I'm sure you've liked or disliked
DCC: Chapter 18-19
||they killed babies?!||
I love the Ents in Two Towers so much. I already liked them in the movies, but in the books they're so much cooler.
||Treebeard: We're gonna tear down Isengard, the weakest of us is stronger than the strongest of trolls and stones are meaningless.
Merry and Pippin: But isn't Isengard protected by a wizard?
Treebeard: Yeah, it really doesn't matter what's guarding the city.||
The ents are the best in the books
in the movies they only manage to capture like.. a fraction of how great they are, and ofc the visual is great but it doesn't work all the same
Halfway done!
Chapters 20-27
||im glad that everyone got on the second floor and beated two bosses (gymbro lizard and a ball)||
question: what's everyone's favorite Dr. Seuss book
it's gotta be The Butter Battle Book for me
but Yertle the Turtle's up there too
Maybe the most basic one
Grinch
PoH all: ||You know who I feel bad about? Khepri. He keeps getting caught in the middle of whatever Carl is doing. He's used for his invulnerability, gets slapped around by various gods, and goes back to the Halls of Ascendency in shame||
Oh, The Places You'll Go is my favorite purely for how hopeful and motivational it is. Especially the line where Seuss just breaks the whole rhyming scheme just to say "Kid, you'll move mountains!"
The Butter Battle Book is good too
I seem to remember in some distant past once reading a book by Dr. Seuss that contained no rhyming at all. Just a rather straightforward fun little story with his same typical artstyle, but all prose, no poetry.
One Fish Two Fish, for the many, many creatures
Also because he wrote that (and I think Green Eggs and Ham) with the intention of teaching children as a many simple words as possible in one picture book
I don't think I've ever read one.
28-29
||giant crab woman||
Chapters of what?
Dungeon crawler Carl
One fish two fish?
I made my parents read it to me over and over
No, any Dr Seuss.
Parade of Horribles 77 ||”You can call me Pony if you like” 😭😭||
DCC chapter 30-31
||dang! That’s a lot of followers!||
And you grew up in an English speaking household going to English speaking schools?
Yes. In, in fact, the England.
That’s probably why then
American teachers commonly use Dr Seuss books to teach reading
Mmm. I am aware of them, culturally, but I don't recall reading one.
Same
At chapter 40
Nice
I’ve read 51 chapters today
12+39
Just got a notification that Audible updated Parade of Horrible’s audio for the last chapter. Not sure what that entails.
i saw an announcement on Matt Dinniman's discord, so afaik just correcting some errors
Good to know.
I finished dungeon crawler Carl!
10/10
New Achievement!
||“Dammit donut!”||
I want more Carl and donut shenanigans!
I want all the books
haha such a turnaround from bouncing off of it
Finished Prince Lestat & The Realms of Atlantis
And so it begins. Welcome to the Crawl.
Gate of Feral Gods all ||well well well, talk about a plot twist
I genuinely thought Bea was dead. But not only is she alive, but Audette got her and the cat? What in the world does she want with them anyway? Shove them in their face at the next interview? Or something more heinous
How long before she pisses off Carl enough to make him come after her too
Bro is on the warpath, and isn't gonna stop until everything is burnt down||
Hell Bent Part 1 ||well crap, guess that not-Darlington is doing some other scheme that involves the murders. What I can’t figure yet is how Michelle is involved. Is she helping him hoping to bring back the real Darlington?||
I might go to the local book shop for book shopping if I can get there
Like more of the Carl books
Hmmm starless sea or god emperor of dune...

do not repost to other platform thank uuu
(Comics related stuff go here right?)
Surprised DCC doesn't have its own dedicated thread here yet honestly
Anyway APH ||Daaaaaamn what a ride that was||
||Definitely not my favorite in the series, that still belongs to TIR and I really don't see that changing. But that ending was absolutely insane. Very curious to see how it all ends.||
Platform Decay Question ||have we seen Three before?||
||yeah they got introduced in book 5 (Network Effect I think is the title?||
Okay I was planning on just summarizing my thoughts on The Candy Shop War 3 afterward (which will end up mostly being me talking about Mull's writing and less about the events of the story, I think) but this one minor thing is annoying me so much I have to complain about it.
Chapter 26 ||"Do you think Lindy would turn on us?" "Who knows, she's tried to destroy us before" what are you dumbasses talking about. You mean before she had her memory wiped and was de-aged and became a whole other character, who then spent a book becoming one of the main characters and proving that she's her own person and on your side even after finding out who she used to be and what you did? Is that what you mean?? Because Lindy hasn't done anything to hurt you guys! What the hell!
Between this and the Zac confrontation a bit ago, which was obviously coming but when it actually happened the dialogue and reasoning took a weird decline for the sake of evil I guess, I am worried that this usually decently thoughtful book is going to stop thinking about how it addresses things for The Drama unnecessarily. ||
Unrelatedly, ||Shardplate should be capitalized damnit 😤 ||
I made it all the way to the end of Hell Bent thinking this was a duology
Apparently there is a third book coming out this year and I hadn’t heard
Hell Bent all ||solid book overall, better than Ninth House imo. Still had a bit of a problem with not foreshadowing twists imo, but not doing a massive lore dump at the climax helped a lot. Really enjoying all these characters. Alex and Darlington need to get it on already lol||
What did you think?
PLATROA all ||So, I will say I knew about the aliens maybe before I even got to book 2/3, so though they were a sudden addition, they weren't totally surprising. I found the Replimoid/Atalantaya story compelling enough to stay interested, and I think tying it to the vampires through Amel worked.||
||I liked Amel and getting to explore him more here. I think its a shame that some of the vampires got less to do, but I'm glad they were at least around (compared to Blood Canticle). I liked Lestat's story in this, and the continuation of the arc from PL of the vampires growing and adapting and looking to the future. I really liked Louis being important again and being the one to solve the problem, and that that came from his experiences in previous books.||
||The vampires did feel a little sidelined though, and a lot of the new lore... kind of feels like maybe it would be better suited for its own series. I like Rhosh as a foil to Lestat but idk... he felt bad about his actions in PL and was pardoned, then he got pardoned again... I'm not really sold on why he keeps being an antagonist. The book also didnt quite hit the same highs as some of my favourites in the series (though it also didnt have lows as low as some of my least favourite moments/books)||
||Surprisingly, despite the aliens and luracastria and all, it kind of feels the most... normal to me? Its plot is a bit more grounded, the philosophical/emotional arc is a bit less extreme than in some other books. It feels more approachable than some of the others, but in being that it does lose some of the really good parts of the series||
I would give it like, slightly above average rating, both in general and compared to the other books. Liked it more than the worst ones but less than my favourites
My top 4 are TQOTD, PL, MTD, TVL. Bottom two are Merrick and Blood Canticle. PLATROA sort of goes somewhere in with the backstory books
-# I skipped B&G and Blackwood Farm
Interesting.
What did you think of it?
[Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis] ||I thought it all got a bit silly, really. The stuff with the aliens and the luracastria and so on just suddenly took everything off in a direction that I wasn't expecting or felt that I needed adding to my mopey gay vampire angst...||
PLATROA ||it does kind of feel like Anne had an idea for a scifi story... and then just kind of slotted it into this book. It kind of feels more like a crossover to me than Merrick did||
nods I read them all together this time, because I knew they were going to interleave.
I really struggled with Merrick and that kind of killed my motivation to read them.
-# Plus I heard the trigger-warning-type content that I enjoy the least from these books is maybe more prevalent there, so that put me off a little
I might get to them eventually, but if I do it'll be when I'm actually interested in reading them outside of just for the crossover
By the way Vecna, which of the Chronicles is your favourite? Plus favourite vampire?
Hey I’ve only read up to Tehanu when it comes to Earthsea, does anyone here recommend the later additions?
The Other Wind finishes out the series. Tales from Earthsea are short stories in the world but less necessary for it to feel complete in my opinion.
Probably Tale of the Body Thief.
Picking a favourite vampire is difficult, because they're all so whiney... :P
Nice. :)
Have y’all heard of aj Finn?
(The persona to a liar)
Oooh
Thank you for the reply
I need to get a bigger version of dune
-# soooooorrry :p
I need to read it for a book club so I will actually get to it
😔
I hope you feel the weight of Vecna and I just being disappointed. (And Atrus too, they're just not around to say probably)
It'll be my next book!
I can't promise if i read it now that I won't end up rushing it to get to GEOD
This way is better for both 🙏
I will probably do a re-read at some point this year with my new edition.
I do want to do a reread but my reading has basically not being going at all 😩
My reading has actually been going surprisingly well
It'll be a while, becuse I'm on a Malazan book at the moment...
this is my May reading...
I was worried earlier this year that I wasn't really going to get to anything
Though I've read... but since I only mark when I finish
Ahh
It's may right now right
I think I've read two books so far? Which is good for me. Especially PLATROA only taking me a week
I've read about 50% of Saint of Bright Doors
Depending on how you want to count it I've read 1-2, plus started Bonehunters and Dracula Daily.
Blood Over Bright Haven ||I really hope this isn't going to turn into a romance. I'm a little over halfway and Sciona sucks as a human. Like hard. Thomil being this nice feels way forced for how awful she is. If he gets with her I'm gonna be mad lol||
Ah, that is one of the books I have read this month. :P
I should aim to actually finish my book this weekend
I'm liking it a lot, the magic is super interesting. ||I just feel it is going to force a romance when it absolutely should not turn into one.||
Edit: ||Like, idk how you come back from telling someone who's family was turned into mincemeat right in front of their eyes that their family deserved to die in agony. No matter how you apologize, that is completely unforgivable in my eyes. At least for any romance||
I want to read other things but I also don't want to not read this
Me when I have no more Carl books
Mood
I need more Carl!
DCC general: ||This is the name that irritates me the most. Her name is spelled Odette||
the price of being audio only, there are always people who get names wrong
In some ways it's so much worse with Will Wight. For the most part Dinniman is pretty good
I do need to make my way through Cradle again, that was a good time but I don't remember it too well
like the big things, sure, but so many of the little things
Carl's Doomsday Scenario ||yeah I wasn't sure if it was Signet like the symbol or Cygnet like the baby swan until I asked a friend||
Blood over Bright Haven ||I like romance but this book definitely didn't need it. It sticks out so much and is so tropey 😭||
||because my brain was like, "half naiad does feel like a clumsy ugly duckling story, if they're going with botched earth narratives"||
This is how I justify having the physical books as more than a vanity/shelf display purchase lol, I check the spellings all the time
I like having audio + ebook for that, I think I might be outright done with paper books
I only read ebooks if I can get them from the library or like a super super cheap bundle
And my library only has the first couple DCC books with super long waits
The first Witcher book pronounces "Dandelion" as Dan-dill-eon and I can't unhear it
I stopped listening and read all of them in print because of this lmao
reminds me of the reason I didn't listen to the fourth ASOIAF book when its original narrator used a dramatically different pronounciation of Cersei's name like 'Ser Sigh' or something
(that version was deleted around the time ADWD came out and Dotrice was available to record a version)
that's a series that could very much use a new audio verison, I did like Dotrice's performance of the first three books, but he lost a step when he did the next two books a decade later
(and idk if his original recordings aged well in light of the show anyway)
given how insanely popular it is and the fact that if the next book comes out (which from a publisher standpoint still has to be treated as a possibility) they will need a new narrator, it's kind of shocking to me we haven't gotten like a Graphic Audio or other multi-narrator version
stuff like Red Rising and SLA are immensely popular yes but they're dwarfed by ASOIAF and they have this
I suppose the likely explanation is that George considered Roy a friend and wouldn't want to displace his work
certainly possible
he worked hard to get Dotrice on the TV show, and when his health didn't allow him to play Pycelle, he at least managed a smaller role in season 2
I suppose it's possible that they'll do something new with audio whenever the next book is coming, which I don't really expect to be within George's lifetime so they might have a little more flexibility
Parade of horribles general speculation || I’m not saying this is a prediction, but if the ai is designing tracks I feel there’s a non zero chance that of them will be in a disturbingly accurately scaled shape of carls foot||
How much have you read Thorn?
The deviant (comics issue 1-4):
||the craziest twist I’ve ever seen in a comic and the gore was more crazy!||
I am on chapter 5
Just fun musings
I have missed DCC
Also Parade of Horribles 5 || oh no Ellie has to talk to a gooner super fan.||
PoH 5: ||She's putting the gooner fan in his place at least||
me not being caught up on DCC right now:
That’s my girl
MOOD
I think wow fans are in the same boat as door of stone fans
imo the existing portion of ASOIAF is much more rewarding to read than the existing portion of Kingkiller
parade of horribles 13 || Womentaurs…and their half mantaur gimp.||
Finished both volumes of deviant
Butchers masquerade ||...wow, damn donut
I physically recoiled at the sheer vitriol and anger donut displayed out of literally nowhere
Though, I'm glad it went down this way and not with her becoming a boss. Though the definitely not a man whore of a cat Ferdinand is definitely ending up as a boss. I'll give Audette that much, that thanks to her stepping in things went better than they could have. ||
parade of horribles 15 || oh no the gooner is in the dungeon||
Butchers masquerade ||what in the world donut, Carl's supposed to be the insane revolutionary not you 😭 ||
||wait no go back tell me more about the "F those trees in particular" spell
||
Platform Decay up to 6||Im loving these emotion checks||
Platform Decay all ||aka Murderbot's road trip from hell||
Which one should I start?
The first Red Rising trilogy is complete, but the 7 book series should be wrapping up in the next couple of years. DCC on the other hand just released book 8 with 2 more planned
If you want to join the hype, go with DCC, but beware of gore. If you want sci-fi/care about reading a completed series, go with Red Rising
My vote is for DCC personally
DCC is a masterpiece of modern literature (for me)
Right
So Democracy has talked
DCC
Might read project Hail Mary from the library then get my DCC books (shipped or go local shopping)
The best Star Wars film Is revenge of the sith
Like
This rocks
I will boe to Johannes Gutenberg for inventing the printing press
Bow to Johannes Gutenberg
DCC IS AMAZING
I need to do another re-read when I get the rest of the books
FoB 30 ||There is too much book left for how much of an end that chapter/sequence felt like. Guess it's about to be Jessyn's Wild Ride||
Got project Hail Mary on hold for pickup at the library if they get it
Amaze! Amaze! Amaze!
(Every library is checked out tho and idk if I can read the ebook on hoopla)
My neice would love a book here if she can read without the pictures!
There’s warrior graphic novels now, as a transition to the already simple books
Aw that sign is so cute lol
Cat sitting on a box set of warriors books would make a killer pin or t shirt design
Oh thatd be cute
One day I’d be so curious to reread the OG warriors series
Also my gf started the incandescent after I raved about it 👀
Not sure I read the OG fully. I came in from the start of the third(?) series, then looped back to the second
I read through series 5 or 6
The one that ends with ||Firestar’sdeath)||, which felt like a natural off ramp for the series. The one after that was a prequel called “Dawn of the Clans”
Should I read love hypothetical?
Just finished Golden Son, book 2 of red rising
Oh my god I loved it
It isnt often I read sci-fi, but man red rising has been great
Yess
Its always funny seeing authors favorite words that they specifically use
Gosh I have so much I want to read
I'm tempted to go through my storygraph and remove a bunch of old reads/tbr's
I'm also tempted to shuffle my shelves around again...
I have like 10 chapters left
idk if it was a coincidence or these books are just that popular but I was reading it at work (I bring books with me to work all the time but no one ever comments really) and like 3 different people said they were reading it
Already loving Morning Star
dooooo iiiiit read even more than the OG, even
that'd be Omen of the Stars, the fourth published series (and yeah a pretty natural stopping point)
I have about an arc and a half (plus one super edition) to go and then I'll finally be caught up with Warriors again
Finally back to reading there is no antimemetics division!
tinad ch3 ||okay, lots of stuff here. "antimemetic bomb" before the invention of the transistor, designed to eliminate the idea of nazism is cool. I don't fully gork it, but it is cool. If I understood correctly, they pretty much said that (anti)memetic technology is relatively simple, and it spans the entire history of humanity, with antimemetic specialists constantly rediscovering the same stuff, forgetting/deleting knowledge of dangerous memes and memetic threats.||
||No clue how to deal with this numbered not-spider thing. Also, I'm not sure if the distress beacon was set up with the number the spider is associated with, or if it was the old director's personal code.||
||The last question is, why did Sheradin change her name to Quinn? If it were protocol, the old director would've expected it, so I assume she got a new identity to make married life a possibility ||
🍿
the redaction sound effect is a bit too much, imo
tinad second dossier ||antimemetic tallnecks
||
||I assumed he retired before she got married. Or the memory was eaten somewhere along the way||
Timad p2 ch1 ||rip Morgan. Spider is back, now in a kaiju form with old director as a mouthpiece
||
||I may or may not have completely forgotten that the tradition of changing a last name after marriage is a thing||
That’s how I felt. I think the author put all the good bits in the section Tor gave away free online as a promotion
Two Towers
||I gotta say, I'm shocked that the fella named Wormtongue turned out to be evil. Shocked.

Might not be getting PHM this week because my hold is on queue
53 people want the same thing as me in the library
parade of horribles 23 || what do you mean this isnt the parade of horribles SysAI!?||
It’s not fair! I don’t have books 2-8!
Royal Assassin 12 ||fitz... alright man 😳||
||context? I can think of several things that would make yuo react that way||
Ah yes, (RA 12) ||He got HELLA laid and im happy for him! In spite of the mess this will absolutely cause for the both of them||
I finished 8 books this month (1 novel and 7 comics)
Operation bounce house||This is going to end badly for our protagonists isn't it? 😭||
Wish it was at the library
|| does capitalism ever for anyone||
Parade of horribles 29 || wow caprids really love to overreact||
The rich?
ah you see
that is what they think
but it consumes all of us eventually
thats the lie that sells the problem
they all think theyll be fine
but they all die. when they have nothing but themselves
full automation of the machine isnt actually possible, its a fear tactic used by the owning class because they need your labor
So just sociopaths then
😂
There's a difference?
potato pota-genocidoh
no you just need to wait for my punchline im unfortunately well known for not getting to the point
Lmfaooooo
Point is they all drink the same kool aid your every day bootlicker does. They think their wealth will save them in the end. But the unfortunate truth is when all of us are dead or automated away there is no class but the owning class
And then class means nothing g
And thus they will have to eat each other
This all got very manifesto-y on main. Oops
TFE ||Oh hi Elend, didn't see you there ||
Hallo
OBH ||That was a much better ending than I was expecting||
Royal Assassin 9 ||Are all wolves able to converse eloquently through the Wit, or is this unique to Fitz? I don't remember the dogs chatting away. Wolves aren't that much more intelligent, are they?||
Parade of horribles 32-33 || oh no gluteus max and Samantha have been on pills for days ||
Two Towers
||Gandalf the White meeting Gimli: You hit me in the head, but it is no matter. You thought I was an enemy, but now you see I am a friend. Let us tell our tales of what happened since we last spoke.||
||Gandalf the White meeting Pippin: I hate you.||
I mean, it's a resonable response...
You don't!
why
Might be going to my first local bookstore tomorrow
I wanna get Percy Jackson books
uhhhh
Yeah I think that's a fair reaction
It's not any less weird in context
Does not compute.
haha, this is how I ended up with all the Trials of Olympus books in hardcover because I found the full set at goodwill!
Let me tell yall, as disappointing as most of the PJO audio book performances are. They have nothing on the Magnus narrator idk what happened but those books suck to listen to
I’ll have to try them physically one day cause I’ve heard great things about them
Trials of Apollo is a surprisingly decent listen. Books were super fun. Well
Fun and sad
I don’t think Heroes of Olympus keeps Bernstein, I can’t remember
Those were alright listens. But nothing special
Sadie’s narrator in the Kane chronicles books was. Grating to be honest
Which is a bummer cause those are probably my second favorite books apart from the PG PJO series
I imagine you mean heroes of olympus?
no, it was definitely the Apollo books... oh it's trials of apollo, isn't it
What accent do they go with for her?
Estuary or just general "English"
General English
Might be more specific but I haven’t listened to those books since I was a kid
The Kane chronicles were my first exposure to dual narration
And it soured me on it for a long time
I read the first 2 hunger games books
I checked out after that
APOH 38 || you know, every time in these books I think, “perhaps this time the fault won’t be with Space Capitalism” the books lock in and show me just how much it can be the fault of space capitalism more than I had ever previously imagined ||
|| we need to overthrow the government to save Mordecai||
Gotta say, the red rising trilogy is the first time ive seen a space war done well
Also one of my new favorite audiobook people
Tim Gerard Reynolds
Up there with Michael Kramer and Kate Reading
Shroud all ||This book felt loke a lot of other books by Tchacoscky but was a solid read if a bit derivative of the hiveminds. A lot of books are described as X meets Y in terms of books and i couldn't help thinking this was Project Hail Mary meets Children of time except good but not as good|| ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
Im back to reading a bit more tonight. Saint of Bright Doors 22 ||It seems this book just won't hook me in no matter what it does
Fetter stole the relic and in the back of my mind I understand this is like, the swerve in the plot into a chain of events that sounds really interesting... but I just... don't care?? I wonder if it's my mental state and not this book not hooking me in specifically||
some books i just don't get the hook placed in, disconnected from my opinion of its quality
Yeah
saint was one ||that i thought was VERY good but i also had to push myself through the whole time||
:(
Though you saying this does make me think it's very likely the book
And I've not been able to push through which is on me
I've a third left now
saint all but still very general ||this is on purpose and by the end i think it's just so clear this is on purpose and part of the vision, but fetter's pov is so vague. this man just floats through his life||
||i do think this must be part of it||
I was about to say
||I feel I've not learn anything yet, in 66% of the book||
I mean, many things have happened
But yeah
22 ||Except that the doors area open, I think that's meant to be kinda huge but I'm just like "wtf does that mean"
||
saint ||i did think some things were clearer and in light of the whole book, with all of it see in view, i can see the purpose of it and what this was going for, and i did think moment to moment the writing was stellar but also my MAN, fetter, just. is so incredibly disconnected from his own life, other people, the place he lives in||
The baffling thing is that this type of thing would usually drive me forward by pure curiosity
But it isn't
Ah well, back to reading
gl!
Yeah I think this is all super fair
Parable of the Sower 18 || This book has not been what I expected ||
||How so?||
|| I think I didn’t know what to expect. I’ve just heard the book is exceptional. I think it’s a slower start than I expected. Has started to pick up a bit recently. ||
Parable of the sower prose/themes||I think the dictation and tone remaining consistent from the normal to the abnormal really adds to the overall character and theme of the book||
Faith of beasts 2 || oh swarm is cooked. Absolutely cooked. It is in full denial mode except the voice telling it that they’re delusional is coming from inside their own head. Also lol setting up mystery and tension with the which friend is going to die question that the character knows the answer to but won’t name names ||
I looked through all 9 boxes of my books for a specific one, and then found it in the first box I checked
APOH 40 || “you straight to video low budget leprechaun” incredible stuff.||
Having a bit of a harder time getting into God Emperor of Dune compared to the last few
GEOD 30% or so ||i feel like it's not weird enough to hit the "enjoy it for the weird" vibes yet but it's also not working for me as a normal book. Probably because there's not really a plot yet and I don't feel like there have been character arcs set up yet either...||
APOH 44 || everyone’s gotta leave Jamal alone. ||
Royal Assassin 12 ||I was completely absorbed in the awkward romance of it all, then Nighteyes pops in...
||
They did marketing posters for each floor of the DCC dungeon. Spoilers for DCC through Parade of Horribles. https://www.lit-escalates.com/collections/levelup
||It’ll get weirder if you stick with it, I promise||
Parable of the sower through chapter 19 || I haven’t really hit any abnormal as of yet. But the book is solid so far. Curious to see where it goes exactly.
I think so far I like the other stuff I’ve read from Butler more(Lilith’s Brood, Kindred, and Bloodchild collection) but there’s still 2 hours left in the book. Like I mentioned yesterday, I think it had a slower start but it’s starting to pick up a bit I feel ||
Lilith's brood is probably my favorite butler work and ine of my favorite series of all time
Lilith Iyapo my beloved
Oh wow! Yeah it was really good. I should give it another read one day. I thought Kindred was exceptional as well. Possibly my favorite of hers so far?
Butler is great
I’ve never read anything by her that wasn’t excellent
Been reading piranesi. Good book but slow for my taste maybe
Her prose is also some of the best I've read
Highly recommend Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
Added to the TBR 😭
Lmfao I know the feeling. But that and The Girl with The Louding Voice by Abi Dare are some of the best books I’ve ever read
Stoooooop giving me books to add to the TBR 😭
Never
Im nearing 30 books on it
🫣
141 standalones and series 😭
But hey, if you never get through your TBR, you always have something new to read 🙂
Do you put all the books of a series for yki TBR or just the first?
Because I use Margins and can add either a book or a whole series to the TBR, I add the whole series if a book is part of a series.
If I start a series and decide it isn’t for me, I can just remove the whole series from the TBR
A series counts as a single entry in the Margins TBR
Heck
Though I wish I could see how many books in total it is. I’m curious 😂
And I do wish that once you have read every book in a series it automatically removed the series from the TBR. Recently noticed it doesn’t. I should send that in as a feature request tbh
But yeah I like being able to save the whole series to the TBR. Usually if I start a series I don’t bounce off of it. And this helps to ensure when picking books that I know what I’m getting into when I start it haha
Oh yeah this just came in on Libby yesterday 👀
Me trying to find books on my shelves
👀
My friend got the complete Red Rising set and is starting it today, my propaganda is once again paying off 😌🔥
LOVE this series
Pretty much singlehandedly got me back into reading half a decade ago now
Royal Assassin 13 ||Well that sure is a harrowing chapter to read when you have a 3-year-old daughter||
Library haul
I didn't know it was a book, I'm gonna have to pick that up
Went to the bookstore and found City of Miracles by RJB in the used section and therefore cheap and even though it's book 3 I'm tempted because it's on my list to read eventually
great series
Got my target pickup for dcc books 2&3
(My parent is bringing it)
It’s technically a miniseries of a comic by my chemical romance singer Gerald way
Butchers masquerade ||I think this is my favorite book so far. I absolutely love the tension, the fights, everything is coming together into a massive storm. The fight with the insect in the town after the con was particularly awesome, and I'm loving this tension at the masquerade, just waiting for all hell to break loose
Because it 100% will
I just wonder, what's gonna be the thing that breaks ||
.... eventually
Ahem
Got em
Don't forget to peek under the dust jackets.
I did.
Butchers masquerade ||ahem
The book isn't over
Until the fat cat sings||
Parade of Horribles ||or the goat||
How far along are you in Parade?
Butchers masquerade all ||hahaha
As soon as a prince Rupert's drop was mentioned I knew what was about to occur
Damn, what even happens by skipping an entire floor
Wow||
||...well that's gonna make the 9th floor even more of a mess||
Morning Star chapter 61 (red rising 3): ||Sevro being woken and immediately swearing loudly is hilarious||
Chapter 62 language ||"Where's your hand!? You're missing a f%cking hand!?"
- Sevro, immediately after waking from a death sleep||

DCC 4 ||MORDECAI THE RAT IS THE BEST GUY EVER||
FOB All ||Actually, jumping in with one last guess before Garral's last chapter probably confirms some part of it. The "deathless enemy" is clearly some sort of viral type thing, unable to live without a living substrate. But I think it's also exactly what the universe would look like if there were two Sovrans||
||or not. All it's really done is confirm is that humanity (or at least this human) has no idea about Anjin or The Spy||
After finishing the red rising trilogy, I can say this is my second favorite trilogy ever
Beating hunger games by far, falling short of Mistborn
In terms of all stories, it is behind LOTR, Mistborn 1-7, and stormlight
I dunno if I will go and read the latter 4 books just yet, I think I will wait till book 7 actually comes out
Not sure what my next read will be
This is Dungeon Crawler Carl
Seveneves 6||I had read nothing about this and thought we were getting close to the climax before I saw there was 24 hours left||
He’s not especially similar but it’s good, some find them a little too cynical but I think it has just the right amount of heart
Last Argument of Kings (First Law book 3) is the last book I ever gave a 10/10 3 years ago at this point
I do think it's extremely, almost nauseatingly cynical
That's part of the appeal for me but I think it can throw people off
Guess i wont know till I try
I remember a series I bounced off of for being too cynical
It was this series uhh
The first book was called Tunnels or something
Yeah i guess it’s just the tunnels series.
Way too much of a constant bummer for me
if the dark/cynical thing is even a little bit up your alley its some of the best
it's more dark observational humor than just straight up edgy though so it's less miserable of a reading experience than you might think
I'm excited for these (after I finish the book I'm currently reading of course)
Another reason to get a kobo 😭
hmm
I got introduced to webstories in my fantasy class
basically wattpad for koreans
Solo Leveling is there
webtoons
oh wow there's a whole new world here
So much fantasy!
It's a trend to have a webstory first and then the webtoon(comic version)
A trend that I never followed until now
Im learning a lot about Solo Leveling, which represents korea fantasy, so I might read that
I'm excited to compare western and eastern fantasy
if solo leveling of all things represents lorean fantasty not a good look on korea
That's true
We didn't have a LOTR here, so I learned that fantasy had to grow from games, especially Japan games
Hence the game-fantasy genre
Lmfaooooo true
Funny thing is, 2 years ago I would have vehemently disagreed with you
Now that I actually look at it tho? 😬😬😬
Solo Leveling 8 ||It's cool so far. Jinu survived the secret quest. He is now a player.||
I just noticed how the main character's name is the same as the guy in Kpop Demon Hunters lol
it's a popular Korean name afaik
though actually, you would know better than me, no?
If anything kdh name is like Solo Leveling
Okay I forgot to get a new book yesterday night, so i'm now reading Project Hail Mary, which i already had downloaded
Just hadn't read or watched the movie yet
oh good, it's a book best gone in blind
Project Hail Mary (literally the first thing you find out) ||I went into the book without knowing what was going on, just like the main character!||
This is one of few things ive gone in spoiler free
In series I usually succomb to googling
Eye of the bedlam bride ||it's time to d-d-d-DUEL||
Just reading Dungeon Crawler Carl
HOLY COW IS AMAZING
Also, Mordecai is the GOAT
that would be the kind of series to have a holy cow
It really would
Eye of the bedlam bride ||I figured the peace people were an alliance of previous cookbook people but finally hard confirmation
People of a similar ideal behind him will make accomplishing his goal much, much easier. Shame the stupid goat was there else, perhaps more could have come of it||
Dungeon Crawler Carl 8 ||HOLY CHRIST THE CAT CAN TALK, AND SHE FIRES MISSILES OUT OF HER EYES, AND THE LLAMAS SPIT LAVA||
“Peter Parker’s life changes FOREVER”
Yeah I’m sure it will
We’ll just be back at status quo by the end of the book anyway
MJ dies so she can be with Paul
jeez
i remember asm 900
superior spider-man was fun
its kinda crazy how the current mess of the comics can make you long for something you were iffy about at the time
though i was always a superior fan tbh
i wanted it to have a longer life and have more time to explore its story before it all went kablooey
Eye of the bedlam bride ||huh
Now I see how Mordecai's past is going to tie in
I feel the right thing to do is to go along with this, but... That's not Carl's style||
Yo can I send you a DM?
Uh, sure?
It's about DCC
Finished Parable of the Sower
I feel like I need to sit with this one a bit. I think that it was good but I expected a bit more? I think Kindred felt a lot more impactful to me?
Parable of the Sower initial thoughts || While I don’t disagree that this is heavy, it’s less so than I expected I suppose? Like idk if I’m just super jaded but it feels in line with what I expect of humanity?
At least compared to stuff like Kindred or some other books I’ve read. I feel like to an extent the degree to which the brutality of the world is kinda swept under the rug and normalized is part of why it didn’t feel as heavy for me as something like Kindred?
Like emotionally it felt very detached in some ways?
Hmmm ||
This one is tricky 🤔
Wolf worm time
Gonna try to read royal Assassin to wind down tonight~ read some on the train and its 👀👀
You know, I think I like Kingfisher’s writing
Sworn Soldier series was good. And chapter 1 of this the writing style feels reminiscent of those in some way already with regard to how it’s written
Also Honey and Spice by Bolu Babalola so far is FANTASTIC. LOVE the way it’s written. And the audiobook narrator absolutely understood the assignment - she ate and left no crumbs.
Listening with my gf so currently only on chapter 7. Desperate to read more. On track to being one of my favorites of the year so far
Is Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint popular outside of Korea?
I'm learning about it aswell alongside Solo Leveling, and honestly, it seems better narrative-wise
It’s fairly common, I’m not sure what the numbers are compared to Limited
I think its at least somewhat
I feel like I've heard of it a similar amount, but thats obviously not good data
God-Emperor of Dune 57% ||This is starting to get more interesting. I find it fascinating how many contradictions exist within Leto II||
Solo Leveling & Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint ||Solo Leveling shows Jinu as the strongest. I don't see it that way. Strength isn't weakness gone. True strength is what shines through weakness. That is why I like Omniscient Reader's View better. And that is why I probably won't continue Solo Leveling.||
ORV has a large following. Probably one of the highest for manhwa fandoms.
Solo Leveling has a higher following, but that has an anime that was vastly popular
I think ORV is a lot better tho
Huge ORV fan
ORV also has an anime in the works that might give it a mainstream popularity kick
HAHHAHAHAHA I LOVE HIM
The best way to describe it imo is Solo Leveling is a fairly typical power fantasy that is intended to give popcorn wish fulfillment. That’s not bad per se, but it is something very specific and is very good at doing that specific thing.
ORV is more a meta analysis of the genre and a love letter to the power of stories in fueling dynamics between readers and the stories they consume.
Solo Leveling seems from the outside to be just a Cultivation story
It’s popular but in like the popular in the community of people who specifically search out insert specific type of media sort of way. But it’s not mainstream even in animanga circles tho expected to be more popular with adaptation success
Similar yea. He uses a game system instead of cultivating
Yea it’s mainstream among fans of Korean manhwa but not anime/manga fans while Solo Leveling is huge in both
It’s at slightly less popularity that solo leveling has before its adaptation
I’d agree, yeah
I don’t think even with an anime ORV would hit SL levels. Probably at best ReZero levels of popularity.
High cult following but not watched by everyone.
Rezero and solo are different level of engagement tho. Solo leveling is more known rezero is more popular in my mind
Even if I dislike it
What does ReZero have to do with the conversation?
Other than me randomly posting about it in the middle of the convo
lmao
Oh
nvm I missed MonkeyGirl's statement
Oh lmao, I read your comment completely differently
I enjoy solo leveling for what it is, hype distilled with awesome art
It doesn't have to be deep in order to be fun to read
And it really bugs me when people are like "it isn't good therefore you're dumb for liking it"
Like bruh I know it isn't high art, I don't need everything I enjoy to be the best thing I've ever read
Sometimes it's just fun to read something cool and hype
Chill
Has anyone here read heretics/chapterhouse dune? Are they worth reading?
Are they book 5 & 6?
Ya
Part of me wants to read them for the sake of completing the 6. Part of me isnt super enthused to continue past GEOD
Then yes, those are as far as I've read - I've not bothered going any further. I seem to remember that's where things start to get weird, and I'm saying that with full knowledge of what happens in the previous four books. :P
My general rule of thumb would be if you're not enthused about reading them, just don't. :)
I suppose
If people said they were super good or something I think my enthusiasm would grow
I probably also last read them like 20 years ago or something, so my memory of their quality is probably hazy.
Ive not read past GeoD
I plan to read the last 2 eventually but GeoD is a good stopping point I believe
I refer you to the Holy Text: https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fyu4ejt8ao3mb1.jpg
Why do you think it’s better? Honestly they have pros and cons but there’s a lot of stories where Omniscient would ruin a lot of the point. Anything with an unreliable narrator for example. It just places a huge gap between characters and readers which is not always what you want
Oh. You mean a book called that. I was totally going to stylistic things.
Ignore me then.
Everyone talks about struggling through CoD but it honestly might be my favourite lol
-# and I keep seeing people hype up GEOD but it's in the lower half for me, so far
I didn't like any of them nearly as much as the first 😅 , but I definitely enjoyed CoD more than GEoD or DM.
Wolf worm 2 || “Bugs, the get into everything”. Based on this and a few comments I have seen from Usha and Grey, I am concerned as to how this is going to fare for me ||
Honestly the first is my least favourite right now, though i don't entirely blame that on the quality of the book
I read it a few years ago and so I don't think I would've picked up on as much complexity (I sure didn't appreciate Messiah as much as I did this year), and I think it's probably suffers just from me having seen/read a lot of stories inspired by it
I'm like halfway through third volume of Ballad of Song and Wine and I wish I wasn't like... probably the only person here reading it, cause I wanna talk about how great it is! But also how much it hurts me. 😅
Ballad of Song and Wine/Stormlight Archive ||The moment I thought "this character reminds me of Elhokar", I knew he was gonna die horribly, and yet I still had such high hopes for him 😔 ||
Huh found that series so confusing and badly paced/rushed I dropped it
It has a big fanbase tho
Really? I mean, I can see confusing, I felt a dire need to keep notes during the first book just because of all the characters and factions it drops on you, but I feel like once I got ahold of the politics, it became pretty fun
Plus, I like the two main characters a lot. ||I like that they have an active relationship from early on in the story, too||
I liked that part. I just felt the author kept adding new characters and acting like they’d been important and present the entire time
Fair enough, fair enough
Eye of the bedlam bride ||oh now this is interesting, that description very much implies the AI has absolutely no interest in "going into quiet retirement" after the crawl is over. And "she" has been helping it
...I wonder what the AI plans on doing about it, and who she is||
Dungeon Crawler Carl 11||how does the Hoarder look like?||
here's a fan sketch from reddit source, I don't think there's anything spoilery in the comments
oh, also the cover for the DCC immersion tunnel episode 2, looks like (immersion tunnel is their version of Graphic Audio- like a radio play with multiple voice actors)
Ew
riiiiiight
I love that book+
great critic of the formats like "Gran Hermano" or "Survivor"
also
I don't understand why in all the cartoons and stuff, all the underwear has to be white and with hearts
it's just canonincally what he wears
I know, but why does the stereotype of underwear is white and with hearts
that's my question
found it: The stereotype of white underwear with hearts comes from mid-20th-century cartoons and slapstick comedy, used as a visual gag to make embarrassed characters look silly when they lost their pants. The heart pattern was chosen because it was considered unmanly, humorous, and distinct from regular clothing.
Bedlam bride ||huh I just had a thought
Carl dreams of directional blasts
What if... What if he figures out how to give his doomsday device a directional blast 👀 something tells me that would likely be enough to essentially one shot pretty much any one thing in the dungeon. That thing is such a giant Chekovs gun but giving it directionality would help deal with the one big drawback on it for something nasty on the later floors||
I'm gonna need some context here. Which chapter are we talking about here?
Eye of the bedlam bride ||not sure exactly which chapter but it's when Carl is entering the spiders den and he gets a very long description from the AI about secret societies||
My quest for Tanith Lee has ended! I finally found a bookstore that can get copies of her out of print works!
Huzzah!
APOH 74-75 || jfc… the AI loopholed past the inability to recreate people by Xing out their eyes like a demented cartoon.||
PoH 75: ||Not the dogs though. They're all natural||
Like dolphin safe tuna
Who is she?
I've got a couple ideas, but that comes from future knowledge
DCC all ||it eventually becomes pretty clear in the seventh book, and then a little more backstory and motives in the eighth even if Agatha doesn’t appear in that one||
How many of those books have you read?
All of them multiple times
Lol, which person are you referring to?
No idea
She's just referred to as she
I have some suspicions as to who it might be but for now it is a mystery
In that case they're probably talking about ||Agatha||
Oh. Lol. Yeah.
In the words of donut ||The smelly homeless lady with the squeaky shopping cart?||
APOH 82 || ngl, thought it’d be a cocker spaniel. But that was probably too obvious ||
APOH General || I’m an idiot, that’s Lucia Mar in the weird adult woman form||
I had zero idea who she was supposed to be
LMFAO
I agree. The romance doesn’t start until chapter 33 with one of the most graphic love scenes ever. It was so jarring and hilarious to read. 😂
Paladin’s Strength question: was Clara in the first book? I just started book two and can’t recall if she was.
nope
Okay cool thanks!
Started the Hussite trilogy and I’ve missed Sapkowski’s dry wit
Look how smug this kittypet from the upcoming WC graphic novel is
When you finish book 1, or when you finish book 8?
1
If you start with 8 first then you don’t have enough info on dungeon crawler world
You think the hooks will let you start another series? It's too late. You will get through all the DCC books before Red Rising
But rn there’s no books 9 or 10
Just yet so we wait
We hunger for more. We must consume more. We must feed ourselves
Oh hey that reminds me, I’m on DCC book 4
I need to re-read DCC book 1 for a June read
DCC book 4: ||Ive been trying to make myself into a crawler but I can’t quite decide on my class. I’m currently thinking, “Enthusiastic Herbalist”||
Royal Assassin 14 ||Me watching this book hand Fitz an ax to make him even hotter: 😳😳||
Book 4? I thought you started the series last week?!
I don’t even have all the books so I’ll wait till I buy from Amazon or target
I am reading the hunger games for the first time so here’s the question TEAM PETA or TEAM GALE
Mid way through book two btw
Nobody is team Gale.
I’m decently sure Gale is team Gale
Granted I never finished the series so
Idk maybe he had a change of heart
Yeah I expect I know how this poll will turn out lol
DCC general ||I think the piece to help this out is to decide what is the thing the AI/Audience is going to stick you with. Did you come in with a plant or perhaps gardening implements? Did something happen on the first floor that somehow got you stuck with an herbalist theme? Perhaps you had a specific knowledge or got an earth hobby related to this that helped out against a plant based enemy or had a plant based solution to something? Because the class options you get are likely to be tied to something around who the dungeon AI/Audience has decided you are.||
Hello
I’ve read this book like 7 times, loved it so much I’m now working my way through the Martian and am looking to purchase Artemis :3
Oh now that’s a dangerous thing to say lol
It’s really good tho
I love both :)
I really didnt like interstellar, for one particular reason
Oh?
Insterstellar movie all ||everything was useless. He didnt need to do anything, go anywhere, and nobody needed to die. They clearly figured it out for themselves. Granted most of it is paradoxical, which also bothers me.||
-# to be fair I haven’t seen the movie in years I I can’t have a strong opinion on it
Its been a minute but thats the gist
||I remember that bothering me yeah||
||pointless and paradoxical||
Thats what made me hate it
Its a great movie, but the story sucks
||mhm, I still enjoy the movie but I do remember not liking that part||
Freaking love Nolan's films, but interstellar wasnt it
I need to rewatch it
I hope you enjoy the PHM movie hen I finish the book
U*
It’s truly phenomenal
Hope so lol
They’re different, but both incredible IMO
Phm 23 ||this js the first time ive seen alien first contact make sense before. They dont all just speak English. It is very logical, and just enough science for me not to claw my eyes out.||
||spent like 3 hours of the book learning communication||
So well done
||have you read other Andy Weir books? He does realistic science fiction really well||
||heck the aliens cant even see||
Honestly no
||it’s so cool I agree||
First time
I hadn’t either, but now I’m reading more
Almost done with the Martin and absolutely obsessed with it
Science fiction hasn't really been my thing for a long time
Getting back into it a little
Started with Red Rising (trilogy not full series)
Phm plus Artemis II are making me turn into a space nerd :D
Now this, next will probably be Ender's game. Haven't read it in YEARS
Heck there are like 7 books
||cousin I see you lurking||
I really recommend The Martian, but I recommend the book over the movie, it was really unfortunate as I liked the movie before and now it just kinda exists after reading the book
||mmm yes hello cousin, i am indeed lurking. it is a questionable hour so i am rereading my message / checking that what i’m saying isn’t weird wording||
Ive heard of it but havent read it yet. Is the movie just a poor adaptation?
Or more of an "inspired by" type thing
IM LOVING IT SO MUCH
He’s so storming hilarious
I keep sending quotes to my friends
Movie is a great adaptation and better than the book
Lmao
I haven’t seen the movie
Other than like 10 min when I was a kid and very confused
Learned lots of swear words that day
the Martian is a great adaptation; the book and the movie are great examples of both mediums doing what their medium does best
There's a good amount cut, but idk those were for me proper changes and needed for medium change
This is actually true
I’ve heard the movie’s pretty good
As I’ve been reading it I have been thinking what they would cut
I think it does really well actually, but the book has a lot more time to characterize Watney and is more enjoyable to me, I plan to rewatch the movie tomorrow as I just finished a reread.
there are things that the Martian book does that were cut/changed from the movie and honestly, would not have been very good on screen. and what they chose to do for the movie, changes and additions that weren't in the book, were things that movies can hit VERY well. both hit different, both hit so good
the movie doesn't have my favourite arc but you know. I think I agree with whoever cut it that it wouldn't have been the same on screen
Unrelated to this discussion, I've always been one to read series, long ones at that, but I wanna read more standalone stories
Ok, so The Martian book and movie ||I do like the way Watney gets to Hermes in the movie more, and I think it’s pretty decent, but I feel like the movie also misses quite a lot of interesting stuff(haven’t watched the movie in a while, so take that with a grain of salt). But I also really like the ending chapters / the Earthling chapter(…maybe only in audiobook? Doubt)||
-# admittedly, I’ve only listened to the audiobook for The Martian, haven’t read it physically. don’t know if that matters, but detail
the Martian book vs movie ||my favourite arc from the book is the journey to the other ship, when he has to deal with that sand storm, and the nitty gritty of traveling in the rover. and it's the kind of slow building tension and dealing with the physical discomforts that just wouldn't be conveyed as well on screen, I just don't think the emotion could be conveyed. but that's my favourite bit that I was initially disappointed wasn't even in the movie except some travel was a montage, but the movie had a LOT else to recommend it. like the movie, with so many more scenes with the team from Earth, there were so many moments||
Seveneves 5000 years later||You mean the entire book to this pojt was a prologue? This book keeps changing what its about ||
is there anyone who has read Off to Be the Wizard by Scott Meyer I could not remember if anyone had when I asked last time it is more comedic so if you’re the more serious type prolly would not recommend, if you have please @ me I been coming up with all sorts of ideas based on the rules outlined
DCC general ||My thought was since I'm going to pharmacy school, some sort of drug class, and then I thought it would be cool to do one that did both poisons and healing?||
Oh you're reading DCC too? Seems like its a bit of a trend here now lol
though clearly I have nothing to do with that because I started reading the series on a whim well before the 8th book came out
Makes sense DCC through book 3 ||could be you just got your coat or were heated out of a late lab when the dungeoning happened. The krakaren plotline also gives some good opportunities to tie into the main plot on theme||
This does sound like an exceptionally bizarre creature
From “Legend of Exorcism” v1
????
Lmao
Project hail mary chapter 23
||what a twist, I was wondering how he'd joined the mission||
Ooh, I've had that on my to-read for a while, how is it?
Also, I feel like the writer read that one book at about a guy transmigrating in to a fish before making this creature
Straight forward, lighthearted, and silly as of chapter 7
Nice
I like it better than Astrolabe Rebirth and Joyful Reunion by the same author
I don't think I've heard of those 🤔
Joyful Reunion didn’t pick up until volume 2. Tbh all of V1 could’ve been a prologue
Actually, no, joyful reunion rings some bells
Don’t read Astrolabe Rebirth, it’s too rushed and there’s too much sad pathetic blind orphan boy who is only tangentially relevant
noted
Sometimes I think authors just add a side character child to slow the story down
