Hmm… I need to choose my next book. Just finished Children of Time which was great. The first three books randomly selected from my TBR are Wolf Hall, Team of Rivals, and The Aeronaut’s Windlass. Anyone have any strong opinions on those or should I roll a die?

I haven't read the other two, but Aeronaut's Windlass was a very alright book. Great worldbuilding, neat characters (at least, to the me of like eight or more years ago), plot I cannot remember for the life of me now. That said, it is very much an incomplete series, with just two out of planned six books out now.

there is some actual neat banter here and there. Among the attempts at giving Dresden Spider Man like quips. I think they have mostly only worked when he isn't trying to annoy someone like a villain or if the funny thing said is not immediately taken as something extremely funny and amazing by the other person just mildly amuzing and they build on the quip to keep upping it.

Part of my hesitancy with putting things in a 5 like Children of Ruin based purely on how much I enjoyed it is that it almost feels like it’s wrong to do so because it feels like it somewhat undermines books that feel like they belong in a place above them because of what they made me feel and what they had to say, like The Girl with the Louding Voice and Homegoing

I know it’s all completely arbitrary but it feels messy in my head lol

Just finished reading Pagans By James Alistair Henry. I really liked it. It's a crime/detective novel with some really interesting alt-history world building - In a world where Christianity never took off at all Britain is a third-world backwater, the kinda place where middle class Pan-Africans send their old tshirts and trainers and do charity appeals for, and with a unification summit weeks away an important Celtic diplomat is found nailed to a tree. With tension rising two detectives, one Saxon, one Celtic need to work together and dig through a dangerous web of politics, grudges, and fanaticism to get to the bottom of the killing before everything goes up in smoke.

But also with an AI that is slowly losing the plot before figuring it out again.

Overall enjoyed it though this is one I think I would prefer a screen adaptation over the book. I was a bit worried around a few things regarding the AIs that Matt did bring back in at the end but I don't think it quite stuck the landing.||

OBH general+Dungeon Crawler Carl general ||this being a standalone book you don't get the depth of characters from DCC but it does reflect his writing growth in the later books. Themes are very similar but diverge enough for this to be enjoyed. Some very classic Matt humor in here but also a bit more straightforward in plot and setting. Partly because he actually had more of a plot and partly because it's a self contained story so he needed an ending.||
