Dark Rise + Guardian ||I also must add, this is already a more interesting take on reincarnation romance than anything Guardian did
||
||this is dekightful because they are not them.||
||James thinking he's following the light
||
I'm gushing I realise

Dark Rise all ||James and Violet both thinking they're opposing their destiny
||
||it's just so messed up! And I think they're both good||
||Will is the perfect Damen/Laurent mix||
Okay, so rereading ch11 of Dark Rise (Dark Rise all) ||Immediately obvious that Will is a Reborn and not a descendant cause of the memories, he's experiencing them exactly how James describes it later; "it was as if he was standing in the dark"; and of course, the moment he hears that his mother was meant to kill the Dark King, and the narration even says that this is the moment where he understood what was going on||
||It is need to see how... selective... his flashbacks of Bowhill are. Removing just three bits of information (how Will got the scar, what did his mom asked him to promise, and who she told "run" to), and suddenly the context is all different||
Actually, now that I'm rereading it
Dark Rise all ||It's established by the end that Will Returned as the Dark King because Simon spilled the blood of Eleanor's sister. So obviously it's not enough for a person to be born, they must be "activated" somehow. So what was James's "trigger"?||
||also i don't think it's ever mentioned where Will actually came from, all we know is that Eleanor isn't actually his mother. So did he like. Spring as a fully-formed baby from Mary's blood or what||
questions, questions, Dark Heir better have some answers
||this is horrible because like, he did "activate" at the hall, right? So like 😬 ||
yeah...
It is appreciated
Which is easy because I remember mostly the end and because I just finished Dark Rise
Dark Rise all ||We do have the condition for recalling Dark King (spill the blood of the Lady's descendant), but I don't think we ever got one for the Betrayer (weird to call him that, tbh), so all I can think of is that maybe one of the Steward rituals accidentally fulfilled his conditions. Hell, maybe it was spilling the blood of a Steward? If Dark King require's Lady's blood, maybe Dark King's servant requires Lady's subordinate's blood||
||They're training with swords, James accidentally wounding another novitiate is not out of the question||
🤔
||Or maybe he snuck into the vault and poked at the Cube of Releasing Nazguls, like Will did||
||Will spends the entire book thinking "I can't be who you want me to be" while actively trying to unlock his powers 👀 ||
Dark Rise all ||Argh, I just know that there's gotta be a real good fic out on AO3 about how James woke up to his Reborn-ness, but I cannot go look for it until I finish Dark Heir||
||and hell, maybe Pacat will be nice and give me a flashback?||
||the foreshadowing is pretty good for what the book does for most of it. I had different expectations when I started||
||assuming she'll give me James's POVs at all (please. Mx Pacat. I beg you. James POVs)||
not in the slightest
||That felt so out of left field
||
I'm still gushing inside about Dark Rise but idk if I have much left to say
I love her so much
Dark Rise all ||and the chihuahua lol, not as much as Violet||
Dark rise all ||I had saved a quote for when you finish but since you did reread 11
||
Was this ||Later he would think back on it as the moment when he had understood, all the pieces fitting together into a picture he didn’t want to see.||
Ye, that one stuck out on the reread

actually one more Dark Rise thought
Dark Rise all ||It's interesting that the only two people who know about Will's true identity are Will and Devon, who's very much in camp let's-end-the-world. Like is he gonna tell his allies about this?||
||On one hand that feels like very pertinent information for team let's-end-the-world to have, and on the other hand, i feel like it'd be bad for their morale if they heard that their beloved world-ender is on the opposite side||
I have questions, ||how do you think Violet or James will react when they inevitably find out? like... 🤔 I suppose it depends on how James and Will relationship develops from here on out to say much but Violet is definitely (platonically) in love with Will but like, still, Dark King||
Hm... (Dark Rise all + speculation) ||Honestly, I feel Violet will be pretty devastated personally (she wanted to defy her fate, and look where that got her!), but also I think she's friends with Will enough that she won't blame him for it and immediately turn on him, unlike certain someone I could mention. As for James... hard to tell||
||Honestly, the Collar feels like such an unfired chekhov's gun, I can't imagine this story ending without him ending up Collared at one point or another, as depressing as that sounds. So there's an extra question of, when he finds out, will he be able to feel any way about it||
||Katherine definitely didn't know Will enough and was ultimately way too... naive? about everything to see past her nose but Violet and Will definitely have already a deep connection|| (I forgot to hit send here)
||If he ends up with the collar, it is supposedly forever 😬 ||
||I can't get over the little bits of Will being slightly evil/manipulative "for good reasons" (such as hate and petiness)||
||Like, you can put into perspective when he stabs James and the cell conversation with Will knowing James is/was "his". Aaaaaaaah it makes me so giddy||
Dark Rise speculation ||Yeah... My current prediction for the Collar subplot is that (1) we'll have a long plotline of James and Will growing closer, then (2) James ends up collared and under someone else's control, (3) we have another long plotline of Will trying to rescue James, alongside all the bells and whistles of "the person I love is now in thrall of my enemies"||
||That's so crunchy||
||And even if that's not how it goes, that Collar's gonna end up on James's neck one way or another, there is no reason for there to be an indestructible Collar if Pacat isn't planning to use it 😅 ||
Ko, you've read Dark Heir too?
Oh also Dark Rise ALL ||the cover of Dark Heir makes so much sense once you know||
OH yeah, did you see Dark Rise special edition end papers?
Dark Rise all
Yep last year
Dark Rise ||The interrogation scene with like 200% more shoujo filter
||
||good art, but. this scene was not that pretty in the book
||
||It is weirdly connecting between them, I'd like to think partially Will doesn't want anyone to do anything to James except himself, even if that thing is freaking torture||
oh, actually, one more thing (Dark Rise general) ||Having seen the artwork of the Collar now, I do hate (but in like, a love way), how the rubies make it look like the wearer has had their throat sliced. It is excellently uncomfortable to look at||
I'm not sure I've seen art of that?
there's like official posters, lemme find it...
Oh my god
I love it, that's horrible
I'm currently looking at the Dark Heir special edition art
right???
Here are the covers
well, it's not Cyprian, since he's darker-skinned, and it's not James cause he's blonde, and not Justice cause he's East-Asian
... yeah... I guess
I do think it must be Will
Of all the merch... you could like, hang in your home...
this is like... idk what this tells about you
Oh my god
This is like...
Pretty line in isolation
Yes, it's your fault
Dark Rise all ||There's a "bad kitty" tshirt
||
This is the only thing that has actually caught my attention
hoodie, sorry
It's so... random?
It is appealing the horny people I think
that would make sense, yes
||It is the one time James is teasing Will instead of Will just dominating him...||
the vibes.... are all so incredible different from each other
yeah...
I guess the first 2 are both queer and that's all they have in common
Innombrable being far more than Dark Heir
Oh I found bookshop.org and it seems like a good cause
@tight kindle four (4) days!
Might buy project Hail Mary from that site with the bookstore I’ve been wanting to go to
I always use bookshop when ordering online
Might buy shipping from the indie store with bookshop.org
okay @proper silo I went and read the sneak peek of Dark Rise 3. And I kind of want to share it with you because it is spoiler free (sort of) but it hints at something that happens in Dark Heir
I shall wait patiently. I'm too hype here
Oh my
AH
4 days until what?
Apparently, Sir Cameron Needs to Die
Oh, I can already preorder the english version over here, huh
Oh my god, Pacat is going to Celsius
I am intrigued
Yes

Oh @potent linden supposedly Jo Walton will be there too
i guess I should read her soon

👀 Jennifer Svedberg-Yen
idk how many of these people will actually effectively be there in the end but even if only half are there I'll be happy
Breaking Dawn ||"you nicknaMED MY DAUGHTER AFTER THE LOCH NESS MONSTER???"||
I don't think I've read her stuff before, did you mean to ping me?
mhm, seems so 🤔
if Tui T. Sutherland is there, I'll do a delayed happy scream at you
Doesn't seem like it
Aye Saint of Bright Doors! Lessgo
hoping i like it! it's slower going to get into it but i'm hoping i hook in soon
Dark Heir prologue ||Okay, so I guess the Lady and Sarcean did the exact same thing to their followers?||
That + Stormlight ||except James is a reincarnator and Visander is a Fused. I wonder if that was the intended effect, like would drawing Ekhtalion override the wielder's mind with Visander's, or was he "supposed" to be just a passenger||
||...Cyberpunk 2077-esque scenario with Katherine and Visander would've been funny||
Dark Heir 3 ||This book is gonna be an endless parade of dramatic irony, isn't it?||
Those look like vastly impractical thrones in the background.
-# Yes, apparently that is what I noticed first.
They're symbolic
No-one actually sits there
(at least I think so)
Daro Heir 4 ||I am really confused by the constant allusions to James being the one who killed the Stewards. That was Marcus, wasn't it? James didn't even know his father was dead until he went to get the Collar||
6 ||ngl, ancient magic warrior reborn in a teenage girl's body is a banger concept for a story in and of itself||
129 pages on Seeker’s Bane! ||this book has more political intrigue than Game of Thrones (TV Series)||
Started vampire book.
Read author’s foreword about how she joined TikTok and it really helped her write this book.
Returned book to Libby.
I have tried a number of booktok books out of morbid curiosity and all the worst ones start like that
The ones that expect you to have seen a million TikTok’s about the characters already and be up on the lore
Uh, people figured out that doing marketing via booktok gets you a big debut or creating a story concept getting a million followers and then pitching to editors gets you a big debut contract
And it’s not that I think every book which gets popular on booktok is awful. Sometime there’s really good ones on it
But the ones crafted just for booktok fame…. Those are almost invariably bad
Fascinating
You can always tell too because... the vibes are different, right? Its really easy to tell the difference between "yes this is my driving passion I have to get the words on the page or I'll explode" (ala TCP) vs "tee hee I wanna get famous on booktok" (ala FW)
FW would be so fun if it were slightly better
I mean I didn't even hate it, I had fun, but it took ignoring a lot of things
See it sucks because I do ignore stuff a lot when watching tv. But when im already taking my time to read a book anf focus and invest what's happening on the page... 😭
Oh is that what Fourth Wing is
I managed to get myself into a state of just like... I don't care about logic or plot, I'm just gonna have fun with the ride
But just from the ending I think I almost certainly wouldn't have made it through book 2, as soon as plot starts ramping up it stops working for me
I think FW for me is very much... I get the appeal of it but why this
I never understood the hype for FW, like yeah I get why it's liked by it's audience..... But not THAT much
It’s because they’ve never read anything like it
I should really read FW just so I can have an opinion
because every time it comes up I want to say things then I realise I really don't have the right to say anything because my entire opinion is based on other people's opinions.
However I do still value my time enough to not.
Isn’t fourth wing a booktok book?
It is the singular most booktok book I have ever booktok'd
My example of this is Assistant to the Villain
It sounded so good
It was not
lol. Like those booktok books that talk about adult stuff like making love
did FW come to be because of booktok?
I think that's what Codenames was talking about
When are we getting booktok books that talk about adult stuff like doing taxes smh
And I don't think FW is one of those
Booktok gets a book with a little bit of smut popular
Heard FW did have one scene about it but idk
There are plenty of books with sex scenes out there
Also romantasy is the most popular type of books rn
But anyway, there's booktok book: this book is really popular in booktok
and then theres booktok book: this because was born within, because and for booktok
True
If FW is popular purely for the smut I think I'll be even more annoyed because the smut really isn't worth it
I think FW has the combo of dragons + action + #hotandsteamybadboyromance that makes it sell
Like I am no connoisseur of smut but really. There is nothing special there
Acotar got #romance #fey #wolfman and #smut
There's also like... one and a half smut scenes. It's not a very spicy book imo
See acotar also. The smut is false advertising
lol
Book 1 has like... one scene at most?? People talk about it like the whole book is spice
Acotar book 1 is very very much a romance
Not smut, not so much epic fantasy either
I do wanna read those someday to form my own opinion about them but I probably will avoid them
Acotar feels very like... truly a fantasy romance, I do think it's pretty confident in its genre there
I... have a lot of feelings about acotar
I definitely don’t wanna read Colleen Hoover
If CoHo wrote fantasy maybe I'd try, but I don't care enough for irl-set books to bother
Usha you were so lucky that you just found acotar boring
Fourth Wing feels like it intentionally mashes Divergent and dragons together to get popularity
Maybe?? I refuse to have a frame of refrence because id rather shove gravel in my mouth than read acotar
She’d write werewolf abuses gf for fun
Hmmm. I liked ACOTAR a lot more.
Given ACOTAR was my least fave book in 2022 and I did read a lot of trash
But I think the prose in ACOTAR is generally better
How so?
...dang it right when I was about to go to bed we get everyone online for this discussion
I suffered so much with acomaf because I liked the story just enough that the bits I didn't like were so much worse
Ah lol
My brother wants to read those books but he too young for them anyway! (18)
FW + Divergent ||The meek small girl leaves abnigation the scribes for the cool, dangerous dauntless riders where shes under her hot leader bf. I certianly see no similarities 🥴||
There was genuinely plotlines and things in acomaf I was enjoying and wanted to see continue
But then there was... the horrible awfulness
He does wanna read hunger games and a coho book
I think FW seems to have some things that are just bad
I agree with you and the things that bothered you in ACOMAF didn’t bother me, but I do get why they bothered you
And that's more entertaining than ACOTAR which is flat, air
The thing that made me drop acomaf was the ||rewriting of book 1 to make the Rhys ship work better||
||like just actually gaslighting me||
Like ACOTAR feels like a book genuinely written, TFW feels like it’s chasing the hype train of adult books that read like teen books
I’ve never read hunger games or seen the movies
I feel like you'd find Violet very funny tbh 🤣
But only because she is such a bad character
I did, even if I thought of replacing her with a better protagonist and/or eragon the entire time
Mmm fw but what if it was eragon 🥴
Of these sort of books I think my ranking is TCP>>>Twilight>FW>>>ACOTAR?
Though twilight I'm going off the movies
I read Fourth Wing at like 16 and it was fine
TCP >>>> ACOTAR >> TFW
lol
He’s not reading icebreaker or heated rivalry let me tell ya
FW > I haven’t actually read the others
I did eat Twilight and I do agree except I've not read FW
I enjoyed ACOTAR when I read it but I was a young teen then so I see more flaws now as an adult but do hold onto that lingering enjoyment
...I'm going to stay quiet about my age right now because I'm dangerously close to this too young territory 😭
Dw, I'll flaunt mine
...you did what
What did you do to twilight?
I’ll expose myself on age (too old for those books)
Usha you read with eyes not mouth
I’m reading this rn and it feels like a booktok book trying to be “cool” and “gothic” but only as like a costume dressing on a lame romance
Anyway, i was 25 when ACOTAR came out lol
It had such a good start too 😭
Do you not lick your books? 🤨
What year was acotar?
Oh y’all heard of that booktok author that’s immediately got a movie after her book got published?
...maybe?
2015
I think 2016
Didn't Suzanne Collins get a movie announcement at the same time as the book announcement
Yes
Yep.
Honestly it's kinda crazy to me that FW/acotar haven't gotten further with adaptations
...ah
Suzanne Collins is actually a good writer though
That is interesting tbf, id watch the fourth wing show ngl
It’s her second prequel to woody Harrelson’s character
I want that mess plastered on my eyeballs
I’d speculate the appeal of smut books is nobody knows what content you are reading
My neice loves hunger games and my mom bought her a set without the new prequel for her gift
I disagree in this case, because both are known as being far more smutty than they are imo
I agree with you
Like from what I've seen online... I get the impression people genuinely think of acotar as faerie [yp word?] ||porn||
....which it really isn't, at least not the first few
Isn't the appeal of smut books... smut?
I honestly do feel sorry for acotar fans
Even people who read TFW say “there’s so much smut” and I’m just standing over here like “are you fr?”
ACOTAR is slightly suggestive
Genuinely the amount of stuff they probably have to put up with from people who only know of it fourth hand online
Heard acotar is getting an adaptation soon
But that could be just a rumor
Acotar has like one smut scene
The second book has one scene
Nvm Hulu scrapped it
Acotar does have a lot of muscles rippling and such though
Worst author?
I thikn a lot of people add the sexual tension into it being smut
what sexual tension
like if you consider all the teasing to the reader of "people eye-f-ing each other" and "they almost did X thing but they did not" and all that onto one smut scene
The book feels like it ramps up on smut even though it doesn't have any
At least that's what ACOTAR tries to do a bit
I remember FW having a lot of "oh I so wanna get spicy with you right now" internal monologue
it just does it very badly
I meant moreso in contrast to like smut movies. There is a reason smut books are super popular.
Acotar has a lot of sexual harassment if that counts
And it’s very 13-year old fanfic style tension
I don't know that there are many smut movies that are like smut books
but idk enough on the topic
Fw ||isnt there like 2 sex scenes? And arent they both like.... really simple 😂 which! Thats chill! Thats not what you advertised though 😂||
Cosmic exactly exactly
FW ||I ended up skimming them because I found them soooo plain||
TFW ||the best scene in the book was when the dragons mating made them horny and they should have capitalized on that more ||
ACOTAR all ||Yeah but like the scene of whats his name pressing the not-a-fae-fae mc into a wall because of his raw... instinct and sniffing her... I bet a lot of people consider that like part of the ramp up into them having sex?||
That was not what I was thinking but certainly counts
I was thinking the ACOTAR all ||"Rhys drugged me and forged me to dress up in skimpy outfits and dance on him in front of everyone" stuff||
But that specifically does match the person she does get it on with in book 1
thus the ramp up I meant
Right, right
like... hmm, that scene was certainly not my thing but I can see the appeal of people think it's hot in a fictional setting 🤔
Acomaf all ||God I still remember so many of the horrid freaky things Rhys did||
Acotar ||licking her tears?? Cmon man||
while I don't see how so many people would find this hot
I know some would ofc, there's an audience for everything and I'm not even judging but I don't believe the majority of people would
Acomaf ||they don't find it hot, that's why it got deleted from existence in book 2 😒 ||
Maybe if the book had doubled down on it I'd be down for reading more lmao
I haven’t finished ready player one but Ernest cline is the author I hated
Acomaf ||I'm telling you, acomaf starts manifesting new crimes tamlin actually apparently committed in book 1 and in exchange disappears every possible sin of rhys's||
ACOMAF ||yeah Rhys gets justification for all his actions in book 1 and it mostly gets forgotten||
Acomaf ||he doesn't even get justification he just never did them. No one ever mentions them or cares about them||
he had good intentions™
Exactly the vibe
Which is so funny because the ||other love interest is horrible because he does harmful things with good intentions||
Have any of you read Caraval
I have to decide which Pacat book I'm going to buy to get it signed
talk about a booktok book
I have though
||sjm wrote herself into a spot where there is no way to excuse Rhys without also excusing tamlin and so made up more sins for tamlin||
Hmm 🤔
But very tropes plastered everywhere
Considered it
I thought it was mildly entertaining
Yeah
It's by the same author as the once upon a broken heart right?
I cant find it but (FW)|| she does this the millisecond she sees him and it is the funniest internal dialouge I had ever read in my LIFE 😭||
defs better than ACOTAR (which isn't a lot)
I think i was looking at reading that at one point
It’s fun
Book 2 IMO was better
I was about to tell you I disliked 2 a lot more
A lot of this books are like book 1 has an interesting premise
and then, the author isn't very original so I can guess every single thing in every consequent book
so Caraval was fresh, and then everything after I just expected
Though Caraval all ||I did like the mmc for book 2 better||
||but not the plot 😩 ||
Caraval || I thought the MMC of book 2 was who the MMC of book 1 was and I was so bummed that wasn’t the case at the end of book 1
||
Oh that book I was talking about with the instant adaptation is called lightLark!
With the booktok author
||Julian (?) is... fine? He's not interesting but the whole plot he gets involved with is interesting so everything around him is fine, but he's not particularly interesting at all 😩 ||
Caraval book 2||yeah, that’s why I was expecting a big twist he was Legend but lmao||
||I think the one who ends up being Legend is more interesting anyway, I forgot his name||
I agree
I’ve heard things about caraval
hmmm, if you like this kinda stuff, I have a better idea of what other stuff to recc you 🤔
Good Ol’ Whatshisname, the ever reliable and popular character r
These books are very forgetable
Yeah I definitely liked ||Legend|| he was fun
fun while I read them
but now it's all poof into smoke
I do remember more of it than ACOTAR though 😬
Like I can at least outline you the plot
These books have a great premise but nothingburger that premise
That’s most booktok
These were before booktok but after trends rook over
Speaking of peak
QoN 18 ||Cardan. Groveling for jude in letters. Oh I used to pray for times like this 😫||
Time to read Dark Heir for reals
Dark Heir 6 ||I love that Katherine (or at least her body) keeps ensing up in a completely different genre than the rest of the cast||
||Last time a regency romance, now a transmigrator fantasy||
Ooh this book looks fun
Well, read Dark Rise first
Yeah 😛
What's it about 👀👀
Dark Heir prologue is hella claustrophobic, I forgot
Mc is being chased by the Dark King minions as he tries to stop them from reviving? Resumoning? The Dark King
Starts like a classic high fantasy YA, turns darker and bloodier and more complicated as it goes on
Based solely off the premise I have an idea of the ending of book 1 but I’ll hold my peace until I get there
👀👀👀👀👀
Group read Cosmic
👉 👈
You have my full retroactive permission
So I wanna finish QoN and read Fractal Noise since its short and I'll get back to you on that 👀👀
(Usha is rereading, I'm reading for the first time)
I'm smiling stupidly on the treadmill at the book
more queen of nothing yessss
On Dark Heir 1 ||Will like "the wrongness of coming back to the Hall"||
Yessss
Gimme grit
wait i just thought of something stupid
||the only place the Dark King couldn't conquer - Oh James, sweetheart||
||The Hall is yours now 😈 ||
Dark Heir 6 ||Visander's job is to kill the Dark King, AKA kill Will. He's a master swordsman. He has to dig himself out of a grave. He's immediately married off, becoming a bride||
||Is... is this entire plotline a stealthy Kill Bill reference?||
-# I wondered why there were 200+ messages since I last looked, and then I saw it was A Court of Thorns and Roses discussion and that explained everything.
Surely its 200 messages of just Rasarr and I discussing Dark Rise
going by our track record, we can definitely make that happen
No, that was the last ~30 messages of the 200+. :P
I am certain
I'm here waiting for you to finish
First so you suffer and second because [redacted]
Both things are important but the first more
Dark Heir 8 ||I love how every time James enters any given scene, he is arranged in the most artful and eye-catching way possible. Like he has to be doing this on purpose. I bet bro knows exactly what poses and angles make him look the best and has practiced assuming any one of them at a moment's notice||
I understand, I do the same, it's the power of vanity
I literally thought I'd finished DCC 4 and I still have 8 hours left
My brain is soup I guess
I’m slow at reading novels so I feel ya
Tried reading dune two years ago but it’s so long for my brain
Like, I just haven't opened it in a while because I thought I hit the end 😅
I guess I got distracted and didn't realize I hadn't finished it
lol I was at page 42 or smth of dune before stopping because it was getting so long for 810 pages left
And I have the mass market paperback of the 3 book series so it was small
@sharp steeple Since I didn't see that you had finished Exordia, here are my thoughts on it pasted from another server:
I thought it was good, but not great. Too many rough edges.
Should I get caraval or something else from Barnes and noble before buying project Hail Mary from bookshop.org online?
I'm very much in agreement. An enjoyable read overall, but probably the weakest Seth work I've read (and that's including the MtG story he wrote last year, which was pure excellence).
And before I buy the dragon steel starter set online
Exordia ||Yeah the main three protagonists were pretty uninteresting as characters. Anna almost had something going, but imo there needed to be more screentime focusing on her relationship with her mom to really let it shine. Eric and Clayton...yeah sorry, military lug-heads just aren't interesting to me. I can kinda see the shape of what he wanted to do with them, but it didn't come together nearly as well as it did for our favorite lesbian disaster girl Baru Cormorant.||
Exordia ||Davoud, Aixue and Anna were my favorite of the main cast. Did not like Erik or Clayton.||
||The sci-fi was pretty darn cool, especially the pink noise/primes stuff. But again for me, getting through all the military stuff to explore it was just a slog. It wasn't even that oooh-rhah of a book, it was pretty unflattering in its depiction of the US military. I just....have no interest in that kind of stuff.||
If you're into that type of story? Those are very different type of books, I've a bit of trouble recommending Caraval cause it just isn't good but it is entertaining.
Yeah, Exordia ||they worked a lot better as characters.||
Ok JW because my brother might get a late bday gift card for me
Exordia ||I will say though, the final battle with Savauge and then the Exordia ship was excellent.||
What is this book?
Exordia by Seth Dickinson
Ha! Dickinson
What's it about?
It's a first-contact novel, would be the simplest way to describe it.
is it assembled from a collection of smaller books?
Also fwiw, without touching any specific politics, Exordia ||the redacted part is about Seth's sense of white guilt||.
Could you DM it to me please?
Oh so like how silo was self published before it became traditional published?
Maybe? Idk what Silo is.
(Also I personally would prefer less reply pings, they're distracting)
The slightly longer blurb is (Exordia premise) ||An ancient alien ship appeals in Kurdistan, and the book is about that ship and the conflicting alien interests who want to claim it, and the humans just trying to not get crushed underneath them.||
That book that’s got an Apple TV show
(Also I personally would prefer less reply pings, they're distracting)
Oh sorry
But yeah silo was self published before the author decided to get an agent because people loved the short story
Just finished Twelve Months ||I really think after the last few books this one was needed. Im glad that Harry is in a better place mentally and emotionally, and it’s good to see all the relationships between characters. It also sets up some interesting stuff for the future. The origin of the White Court makes me think that maybe all the vampire courts are similar||
Dark Heir 9 ||Okay, so first of all, the party getting split up is bad, but second of all, the party being split up by gender is hilarious||
||Boys inside, girls outside!||
Dark Heir
ah, right, thanks
Can I afford to spend money on Sir Cameron on Tuesday?
Not really
Do I need it for my mental health?
Yes
I already bought mine
Digital
Was 10€
Rasarr. Did you see that Pacat is supposedly going to the literature fair Im going to?
I haven't read any books since I finished White Trash Warlock a week ago 😭
There were two BL's and 1/4 of Fateheart but it's reallllllly not a lot of reading in a week for me. I blame stress, but also the lack of reading might be contributing to how bad my mental health is
I've seen you mention it, yeah!
It was like 3am so I didn't know if you saw next day
Try to wheedle out the release date for book 3 out of her
Hopefully by July we already know
Oh, I thought the fair was like, soon
I have to decide what book I'm buying
Nah but last year I bought the hotel like 3 months in advance and I ended up in a hotel 3 towns over
so this year I've already bought the hotel
now I'm in the city proper
i see
Oh, so all her books are currently already translated to spanish
which means I can probably just buy something over there instead of lugging crap back and forth
I kinda wanna buy the polish version just because... 😩
What do you want to read next? Or are you waiting for Sir Cameron for now?
oh, btw, i checked the polish covers for Dark Rise and I'm disappointed to say that (1) only Dark Rise has been translated thus far and (2) it's using the same cover as the English release 😤
I still have The Obelisk Gate and The Devils checked out from the library but honestly after the week I've had I'm really not feeling either of them.
the spanish use the same cover too
I have a copy of Hell Followed With Us from a friend that looks interesting, but again I don't know that I have the energy for a post-apocalyptic story.
Even if it is gay
I'd not recommend reading the Devils right now, it's not like grimdark but it is certainly not on the happy spectrum
from my quick goodreads browse, looks like almost every translation uses the original cover
yeah...
But there's a book on hold for me at the library that looks like a fairly easy read. Sequel to Forging Silver Into Stars
Problem is the library is on the other side of town 😭
And I lost my gloves at some point so taking the bike would be hell
mhm, I understand
To Shape a Dragon's Breath is like if Babel and Fullmetal Alchemist had a baby
I tried that one
The magic system was simultaneously too specific and too vague. I struggled
The fact that everything is written in Uncleftish Beholding is rough
"Uncleftish Beholding" is a short text by Poul Anderson, first published in the Mid-December 1989 issue of the magazine Analog Science Fiction and Fact (with no indication of its fictional or factual status) and included in his anthology All One Universe (1996). It is designed to illustrate what English might look like without its large number o...

Telemachus' name meaning distant war is kinda fucked up bc imagine being named after the reason your dad left. My beautiful baby boy, Cigarette Run.

Dark Heir 12, suggestive ||The emotion you're feeling right now, Will, is called horny. You are horny for James using his magic powers.
||
||He has been since that one chapter where he dropped a crate on James' face "Show me what you can do 😳 " literally||
||Yeah, but like... he's literally flushing and feeling a "throbbing" here||
oh my
indeed
I'm on c3
If you don't remember, Dark Heir 12 is when ||James is choking out Howell to prove he's himself||
Will definitely agrees with you on that count
I know
thought I think ||Will that has weird violent/dominating impulses is hotter because of those. Like he's smart enough to tell it's not really quite himself but he still rides on them
||
Dark Heir 12 ||It's not quite my thing, but it is definitely interesting to watch||
||It's a mental battle between sensible and horny, and horny is definitely winning here
||
||It is twisted enough for me 😌 ||

back to reading myself
Idk Rasarr, Dark Heir 4 ||I think he's always horny... What is this description lol ‘No, I was a goody two-shoes,’ said James, who looked like a golden temptation to sin.||
WMTD4/general ||I swear the horrible descriptions always come up as i sit down to eat
||
It's always the worst ones!!
I'll sit through a bunch of conversation or something while I'm making my food and then I sit down and get hit with the actual descriptions
I've not read much the last few days, tbf
Dark Heir 4 ||‘So this is how it’s going to be? You hold my hand and pretend that you have power over me?’ yes he is, yes he does 😌 ||
Dark Heir general ||Yeah, but there are like... levels to Will's horny. There's always like background radiation of horny whenever he's around James, but there are scenes where it peaks
||
||don't give your loyalty to a killer- James just said. Teehee||
👀
My friend is bringing me her copy of this on Sunday
I'm very excited
Hopefully to double the size of the "horror I've read and love" pile 😌
Dark Heir is a book-long exercise in dramatic irony 😌
Yeah Pacat's just having fun twisting and twisting
She didn't need to go so hard on it but I'm glad she did
... As I was saying ||"And alongside that, a new quality to his pulse. A proprietary thrum. Prove it. Prove yourself. Show me."||
Reading issue 2 of supergirl rn
Dark Heir 6 ||"Katherine" just tried to choke Phillip, the following conversation is the most non-sensical thing ‘I don’t understand what she’s saying,’ said Phillip. ‘I’m sure she’ll warm up to you,’ said Mr Prescott. like
||
Dark Heir 6 ||I don't think Prescott gives a damn about what Phillip is saying, tbh, he's just commenting on the choking attempt||
Yep
||its funny because he absolutely doesn't care about Phillip so his answer matches that||
Almost caught up to you
I just reached that scene
you're right, it's next level
Dark Heir 12 ||"my master won't kill you for sleeping next to me"||
||‘I think he might very well kill someone for that.’ The words just came out.
||
17 days until my copy of ‘Of blood and fire’ is released and I can read it!
Also, 3 week since I ordered Sigra’s Roost and I’m still waiting.
Dark Heir 19 ||there's an implication here that Will does have active experiemce getting what he wants by flirting and/or sleeping with women
maybe its just flirting, he sure knew what he was doing with Katherine||
I got a serious question - what book/book series would be your hyper fixation and will not stop recommending?
stormlight
(I opened Pandora’s box. Let the chaos reign!)
tree girl by Ben Mikaelsen
I bought all of these books individually, then used "I can donate them to the library so more people can read them" as an excuse to buy this omnibus.
Mine is - Titan’s Nest series, Inheritance cycle, Villians & Virtues, Daindreth’s Assassin series, stormlight archives, dragon prince and dragon star (Melanie Rawn).
(I actually haven't read all of them yet because I stumbled on it while book shopping with some burthday money, and then Very Bad Roommate stuff happened and distracted me from reading the rest. But now I'm living in a different state and own this! So I'm gonna restart from scratch)
I tend to lean away from giving out recs because I don't know what everyone likes, but most of my top 5 or 6 series have definitely fallen into that status at some point or another. Cosmere, locked tomb, wheel of time, red rising, malazan, vampire chronicles, possibly the summoner's circle and folk of the air? Though I don't think I've spent as much time thinking about them
Oh, and of course the secret history, dracula, frankenstein
That is valid
I tend to be very... back and forth with my fixations. Something will have my attention intensely for a few weeks or a month or something, and then fall to the back of my mind for a while until something rekindles it
Honor Harrington. Its so good that as soon as I finished it the first time I started over
I kinda want to read it again now...
I'll have to go with Mistborn
Cause it's easy to recommend and one could either get into the wider Cosmere or be happy with the trilogy and then move on
Or even just the first book tbh
Otherwise I don't think there's a book I very strongly recommend
There's stuff I very strongly like but for some reason that doesn't translate into recommendation for me
I prefer recommending stuff to people based on their mood
I tend to try and tailor my recommendations based on what I think people will get on with, so I suppress the urge to recommend Erin Morgenstern to everyone...
Plus, while I have a handful of consistent favourites, I don't generally rank books, and my current obsession shifts so it's hard to say what's going to top the list given to any given person.
Unfortunately I am kind of one of those people who's go to recommendation is brandon
But also, a lot of the people I'm recommending to (irl friends) tend to not be big into fantasy, so partially I just go for that because he's a bit more accessible than like... recommending wot or malazan first up
The Secret History is probably my other big recommendation right now, I know I've recommended that to a lot of irls
A lot of my other favourites, I'll usually wait a bit longer to see what they like before recommending
Well I’d like to say my recommendations depend on the person
But I don’t know that that’s true lol
Some books I can’t help but rave over even if I don’t think they’re necessarily great blanket recommendations
It really depends lol
I mean I will forever shout praise for Homegoing, The Girl With the Louding Voice, Sword of Kaigen, Broken Earth, RoTE, Dandelion Dynasty, Beartown, Kindred, and Children of Time(Children of Ruin in particular though I love CoT too)
Of those I think Children of Time is the only one that could be a good blanket rec since the others save for Dandelion Dynasty are heavy. And Dandelion Dynasty has a bit of a tricky entry point with how book 1 fits into the series
Tress would probably be my #1 blanket rec/safe rec
There's no such thing, IMHO, as a blanket recommendation. You can't suggest Children of Time to someone who doesn't like sci-fi.
-# Or spiders.
Yeah I use the term blanket rec loosely
Blanket as in “if you’re interested in sci-fi, children of time. If you’re interested in fantasy, tress or Mistborn. If you’re into anime, cradle”
Also I don’t like spiders. I think that’s an obstacle that can be overcome.
I’d maybe caveat with the “if you have severe arachnophobia maybe skip Children of Time”
And of course things change substantially if they’re already a fan of/reader of a genre and they don’t mind some heavier books
Indeed.
@ripe tide [Rook & Rose 1 and 2] ||For a series named after her, I had forgotten how long it takes for the Rose to actually turn up (almost the end of book 1); and for a trilogy that's clearly about them, I'd forgotten how long it takes the medallions plotline to actually start being explained... (Currently about 3/4ters of the way through book 2 and the Rook has finally spilled the details.)||
Oh the question I put out about books/book series that you guys never stop recommending sounds very stupid. Should’ve sat on the question a bit more
Not necessarily. I think some people get more invested in series than others, so they will always have something they're deeply unhinged (highly) about.
I don't.
i am reading the cruel prince and just got to chapter 3.
(spoiled for my thoughts meanwhile, no plot spoilers.) ||I find it pretty boring. I dont feel like there is interesting worldbuilding or anything happening. i get that it might get more hapening later but meanwhile its hard to make myself interested. can someone give me reason to continue reading it? (i can accept small spoilers for the rest of the book at that point.)||
I suppose I would say [no plot, answer to your message] ||chapter three seems fairly early to make a judgement, personally? Especially given ch1 is like one sentence. Worldbuilding isn't really the main draw imo, it's moreso the characters and their dynamics, so I think you're solidly still in the set up phase||
||my recommendation would probably give it longer, see what you think when it gets into it, but if it's really not working for you I suppose my recommendation might be to take a break and consider coming back to it later||
||coz really i think you need to get a bit further in to really get to the meat of the book, but I get that that's hard when you're not clicking with it||
||I will say its very much a book focused on the characters and relationships more than anything, so if you're looking for big fantasy worldbuilding or something you may not find it||
I read 11 books in January
Happy new month!
started on the 9th but I stopped completely near the end of January
and the page count isn't really accurate because I read different language version of the books that were posted in English
I'll try better this month
does storygraph not have the language you're reading in? (which i think is korean)
It does have all my spanish books, tho ofc the amount on each language is quite different
If the original book is written in English, there is only English versions of them. And pure Korean books are rarely there except very popualr ones, so I had to add a few myself
if i look up the book in spanish it's definetely there
It has to have an official translation of course
Yeah, I tried searching the books in Korean and it wasn't there. It might be because the platform is rarely used by us
me: I wonder why am I not getting anything done
Also me:
For sure. It takes a very vague style of approach to its world building but it is still really fascinating.
Keep me updated on your progress. It is not always that I get to hear/read reaction of people on the more niche books compared to the juggernauts of fantasies.
Might buy hunger games ebook for my brother
It’s 10$ on Apple book
And I haven’t read hunger games but wanna get it physically
i might finish another book before the day ends but if not...
I’ve seen this meme floating around a while and I feel like Asoiaf actually has very few characters that arent intended to be sympathetic and quite a few that are straight up good
oh my library finally acquired more copies of Because Internet woooo
this meme is used by people who havent read either book series
My January. Don’t think I’ll finish another book today.
||i know its early and i do want to give it more chance. that is why i am asking about what will happen next so i could get excited about reading it.
basically i read 2 chapters and was not interested at all and now, a momth later i decided to give it another try.||
Ignore the ratings. I’m still deliberating on this shift to how I rate books this year
Yeah I'm definetely not reading another book between now and midnight
Yeah I have 5 and half hours to go in this book and I want to play Outer Wilds and try Deadlock again and stuff
Excellent read!
If you were to recommend me one book to read while I'm still a teenager, what would it be?
Perks of Being a Wallflower
Book great
letterboxd top 4
true
😔
My reading's really fallen off lately, I've been struggling to get more than like 20 pages at most read per day
I think for me it's a combination of reading a much slower book and being out and busy a lot suddenly
I am enjoying New Spring but man I do not have much momentum to get through it
Hopefully my reading will pick up around late Feb when I have more time and energy
Oh, I need to get Odd Spirits
I had a very good time with it!
Does anyone know if theres a quick way to change the version of a book on storygraph without having to delete an entry and make a new one with the other version?
I think there isn't but I'm not sure
Editions, then you can click switch edition
I haven't read like that since 2024
(That's much more than what I read per month since..... June? 2024)
Emily Wilde!
Yeah! I loved them
23 books in a month, fantastic
Yeees, the author is publishing a new book in like a month?
Emily Wilde? Or new series?
It seems to be quite a different vibe but it seems interesting enough
I think it's a standalone
Hmmm
Agnes Aubert's Mystical Cat Shelter
I was not very sure cause it's "cozy fantasy" but the description is enough for me to give it a go
Actually, it comes out Feb 17th so not even a month
I like cozy fantasy
I like it when it's good
That's a silly sentence but when it's cozy just for the sake of cozy I do find it pretty boring
I can do cozy/low stakes but it has to have something to it
It seems to have again some arrogant messy male character in it too
and the mc is once again someone that sounds like she's in the spectrum, and it has cats and rescued cats and magic
So I'm sold
I don’t care if it’s boring, I’m just there for the vibes
Yeah, I don't think cozy vibes do anything for me
Hey, Bambleby was not arrogant or messy!
TCP ||aaaah I see. I'm not totally sure how specific to be, but ill say... despite jude's status at the start of the book, she manages to get herself significantly involved in the politics of the crown and has to navigate that, against dangerous opponents||
I'm not sure if you're looking for a blurb of what to look forward to or like a specific thing to hook you, I leant more to the former
wisteria society 42% ||god this book is so quotable||
Dark Heir 13 ||I see mind control is going to be a theme for multiple characters in this book
||
||But also, what is going on with Leclerc? Is he also under some sort of mind control that broke for a moment or what? Is he Tom with a fake face? What's going on?||
14 ||man, this book will really give us the POVs of everyone except James 😔 ||
I've been all day over here like "when is Rasarr reading again 😩 " but also like, obviously i can't ask you to read
I only now found the time 😔 At almost 2 AM
Dark Heir 14 ||So Anharion took some kind of vows of chastity 🤔 I imagine that only adds to the betrayal of him (by Sarcean, I mean); not only did Sarcean force him to his side, he also forced Anharion to break those vows||
||I wonder if we'll ever learn Anharion's original name. The way Sacrean's thoughts cut off before the obvious place to say it, I almost wonder if it was like... magically erased or something||
I need to read this now
it's been pretty fun!
I'm so very sorry to be the pedantic one, but ||It's Sarcean||
oh i have no idea how that typo happened 🤔 thanks
Dark Heir 14 ||The way James is constantly objectified by Sinclair's men is excellent (in an, that's horrible but very good characterization)||
also like ||he's used to it 😩 and you can tell this is just "normal" 🤮 ||
yeahhh
I jokingly called James a Laurent expy before, but now I genuinely do feel like a lot of the way James is written is Pacat taking what worked with Laurent and refining it 🤔
(Captive Prince) ||cause like, there is an undercurrent of that in Captive Prince too, with people very openly speculating about Laurent's sex life and such, but it's not quite to this degree or this... visible||
I think though that, Dark Heir 14 ||James is actually more "good natured" than both Laurent and Will. Not that Will is bad but he is very willing to be very manipulative without much of a problem.||
btw it's Dark Heir
I'm so sorry I sound like an ass but that one is important so people don't get spoiled lol
Dark Heir 14 ||That is definitely true, it's pretty obvious that James's behavior is more of a defense mechanism than an actual assholery||
Dark Heir 15 ||Sarcean, the world's first goth girl||
btw, I have this game on my wishlist
and because there's a rogue sale or whatever, it's in the event
and my brain's doing all the associations
Before it was all the phrasing associations, now it is both lol
Not that the phrase is particularly unique
ngl, I knew of the game before i read the book, so whenever I was reading "he is coming" in Dark Rise or Dark Heir, I was imagining the Dark King as looking like this
I did know of the game before but I wasn't doing any association lol
I played the demo a while ago
Dark Heir 16 ||Having successfuly mimicked Darth Vader, James now turns his attention to the Matrix||
||What iconic movie scene shall he replicate next?||
||the darth vader thing was hot though, canonically 😌 ||

Dark Heir general ||At this point I have to wonder how magic is even remotely a secret in this world
Like nobody here seems to care about hiding its existence||
||Hmmm, but no one can do magic except James for what we've been told (iirc), and he only does it infront of all of Simon/Sinclair's men who already know of it. Like the first time with the crates Will notes that only Simon men are left at the harbour||
||Sinclair's men, and also random Italian bandits, some of who escape alive. And then there are all those magical artifacts popping up all over the place, most of which are apparently touch-activated||
||I suppose this being early 19th century does go a long way towards hiding this fact||
||You know if this story took place in 21st century, people getting possessed by the armour pieces would be all over Tiktok
||
oh yeah ||I think the bandits are the first ones we see witness magic on page that are unrelated||
||idk about the artifacts, or idk how common they are or if they were all explicitly within S&S and Stewards control, minus the collar||
||like there seems to be a lot but it seems also that you need to go dig deep for them||
True 🤔
Yeah, I suppose archeology was only just getting started properly at the time 🤔
on that level, probably-ish
or at least the chance of random encounter would be low? idk
I can suspend my disbelief for that one
ye, fair
Dark Heir general ||I also wonder how widespread the Old World was. Like of the four kingdoms that comprise it, we know that two of them were in what is now Europe (England and Italy).||
I think... Dark Heir sometime before 14 ||Katherine coming out of the floor is more....
I know it happened occasionally but it's still a bit...||
well, i went on a short worldbuilding rabbit hole and learned that (Dark Heir general? BUt also science facts) ||the youngest sea on our planet is the Baltic, which formed between 10K and 15K years ago. I don't know if Pacat went to the same lengths of, uh, googling "the youngest sea in the word", but i now chose to make it my headcanon that (1) the Old World ended within that time period, and (2) the gate that they couldn't go to because it was flooded leads to the Baltic||
||which, if my random guess is correct, would mean that three of the four kingdoms were in Europe||
||would that mean that the Old World was just Europe?🤔||
We can extrapolate the 4th then
||maybe there were others in other parts of the world||
Yeah, probably 🤔 ||If we assume each kingdom corresponds to a cardinal direction, then England is west, Italy south, Baltic north, and then East somewhere in the direction of Russia, or the Balkans?||
maybe?
but they don't seem to have been invited to the party
||like, id assume magic existed worldwide but this specific 4 kingdoms, story, etc happened in Europe 🤔 ||
Indeed
Also maybe it isn't that old
||only a few millenia rather than 10-15k||
||but since 2 are in Europe, I think you're right||
You know, this is something I could actually ask Pacat
You totally could 👀
Dark Heir general ||If we're looking for a younger event to date the fall of the Old World, there's a hypothesis that Black Sea rapidly expanded some 8K years ago and that's where all the mythical stories of the great flood (at least from this part of the world) come from||
Hmmmm
||So it's possible that the kingdom that's now underwater was somewhere in teh region of the Balkans/Turkey||
Maybe
still technically Europe, even if the very border of it
I'm putting this on my calendar
Yeah, and you made me think about it lol
Dark Heir 17 ||Pacat going for world record of how many types of mind control can fit into a single book||
You're catching up, maybe I'll read more later
i mean, i'm going to sleep soon, so no worries
I am 3 issues away from completing supergirl:woman of tomorrow
Dark Heir 18 ||I wonder if this is James trying genuinely to connect with Cyprian somehow, and just... not really managing cause he feels the need to maintain the blase attitude||
Supergirl: woman of tomorrow ||the sun it’s green||
||when i was rereading this yesterday it did make think James is very
||
Guys
Christopher Paolini said to keep an eye out for announcements next week 👀👀
If anything he says doesn't star with "murtagh 2" or "eragon tv show" im gonna be mad highkey
Eragon remake, but this time it’s worse
Im the crashout will be a delight
Oh it will be. He's been... annoying me with all these releases of the IC but like new stuff is coming out at a snails pace....
What if he announces that he’s going to getting into all the media he missed asa homeschool kid so he can go to conventions and understand what Charizard is
Then id point at the curling monkeys paw beside me and nod sagely
You’ve gotta get rid of that thing!
People keep telling him his books are just a Star Wars adaptation, so he's going to sit down and watch them so he can understand what they're talking about
Well with paolini the main book he needs to pick up is a tutorial on how to write
Finished House of Leaves
Wait is Paolini actually behind on nerdy media? Doesn’t he reference a whole bunch of stuff in his works?
I wouldn't be surprised if he didnt know what pokemon was tbf
Slightly behind American Elsewhere on my list of top horror novels but still really good
||I just didn't like the ending. The Johnny Truant chapter near the end was pretty good but I didn't find his story as compelling as The Navidson Recordand his ending felt a little rushed, while Exploration #5 starts out really strong but after Navidson sees the window it kinda deteriorates (although the burning of the book and his fall are both baller-tier storytelling) and the book didn't feel like it wanted a happy ending.||
He said he did not at the dragon panel I saw at nexus this year
||However, the story overall is wonderful, creepy, and compelling; the dry academic disguise fits the novel really well and sets up some terrifying moments with regards to the formatting, which I enjoyed a ton; and both Johnny's commentary and The Navidson Record are solid already without everything the book does to make them creepy.||
9.5/10 would definitely reread
Sea of stars 3
Just to spite
Anyway as a palette cleanser between that and my next reads I'm going to read the Aeneid
I've been translating a little of it in my Latin class and want to read the full English translation
What if inheritance cycle is linked to the cosmere
Lowkey I wouldn't hate this, even if im not the craziest fractleverse fan
Im reading Fractal Noise
there are only two things in the verse atm right
Yep! To Sleep In a Sea Of Stars and Fractal Noise (a prequel)
Cradle 👀
Fractleverse has the opposite problem the IC has where I dont exactly care for the world but I will follow the characters to the ends of the earth (lol)
Ive read other sci fi that does the sci fi setting a bit better (red rising)
To Sleep in a Sea of Stars had such odd pacing
I just wrote my thoughts on Uncrowned in #1404905613674283041 👀
Right? TSIASOS ||Its like it takes a while to start, we barely see any planets and then the last 100 pages are a TRIP||
I think that was just growing pains from doing something so far our of his wheelhouse
May I ask, what are your future reads?
IOTE
As well as the start of another High Fantasy series
I must always have a high fantasy being read
||There was the whole false climax too||
it was the Cosmere, then Wheel of Time, after it Malazan
tbf we've translated a decent chunk of the Aeneid in my Latin class, I'm familiar with most of it from the same class and I'm even more familiar after reading through the entire translation notes because I was bored one time
So it's not like I'm jumping into an epic poem completely unprepared or anything
uh huuuh
alright, i'll call it here
the way I cant tell if youre shocked at how long or how short that is lol
TCP 14 ||This was an audiobook experience reminiscent of that one|| SLA ||epigraph with all the numbers|| or WoT ||flicker flicker flicker|| lmao
I'd call that a pretty decent January personally
I've been consistently really bad at marking individual pages unfortunately
That's something I wanted to get better at
oh my goodness
I just finished the book I was reading and went to look at the third book in the trilogy. I saw 2026 on the date in StoryGraph and thought 'oh, disappointing, I guess it's not out yet'.
So I went to look up what the release date was
It was published five days ago
Any who have read tigana, pls respond
||I js finished part one. The prose is very nice, but the overt sexism is getting too much for me. The catriana and devin scene in the cubby was too awful. The sheer objectification if women, and how all the main characters who r shown as good are so sexist, especially devin. Will this stay so throughout the book? If so, I do think I'll DNF. Also, is there any more spice? Then also I do think that I'll DNF||
January!
Maybe a bit less than the beginning but yeah. It stays like that ||Iirc Devin is called out a bit about it. But that's all. I don't entirely recall about sex scenes but there might be more||
Bit of a slow month for me, I blame exams (also the last few pages of Locklands were technically in February but whatever)
holy euphemism the final laundry files book came out 5 days ago
i never thought i'd see the day
Right? I plan to reread the previous books after I'm done with my Dresden reread+Twelve Months, then read the final book. Looking forward to it!
Oh darn it, I missed that
Wow who's that awesome person who recommended Don't Let the Forest In? He must be a very cool person indeed
- January: The Blackbird Oracle, Debora Harkness; The Will of the Many, James Islington; The Mask of Mirrors, M.A. Carrick; Elsecaller/King Lopen the First of Alethkar, Brandon Sanderson; The Liar's Knot, M.A. Carrick.
My January was just supergirl woman of tomorrow lol
Not a terrible way to start the year though. :P
huh then it's wrong
Honestly I had forgotten that was January because I was still abroad so it took me by surprise seeing it on my wrapup.
My guess is you will not like part 2
Read TCP this week. Enjoyed it quite a bit, so thanks to the people who recommended it here!
I'm working on an essay on 100YoS and I keep getting reminded of how good it is, and it keeps making me envious as a writer. Just rereading the ||massacre of the bananeras and....||
Yeah, the only positive thing I could say is that these traits in those characters aren't actually shown as good but I don't think ggk actually managed to do that very well so it ends up being... yeah
Bought dcc shipping at Barnes and noble!
Now that I’m halfway done with it, I’ve gotta say. There’s a shocking dearth of cholera in the book titled “Love in the Time of Cholera”
Not a García Márquez book I've read yet.
It’s very good, except for the cholera based false advertising
No wait it’s actually 224 or smth
Scythe General || I am in love with the Sycthdom. The culture is just really cool. The kind scythes like Curie vs. the killers like Goddard. I'm reading Thunderhead now, and I am so excited ||
Scythe I can't remember the chapter || one thing that made me bust up laughing was in the later part, where Citra was pretending to be a Tonist. "I seek the great question... Aflat or Gsharp?" (paraphrased) as a music nerd that is SO FUNNY||
Scythe is so good
one of my favourite books ever is Thunderhead
The Toll ||Though the ending was so rushed and disappointing||
Dair Heir 19 ||"But fathers are my specialty" James, your edgelord exterior does not hide how horrible all this has been to you
||
Bit of a mood shift - I must say, I am having a real fun time imagining this story as someone's D&D campaign
||He does try so hard 😭 ||
||it wouldn't fly past anyone that wasn't aprt of the stewards since they're biased||
This section absolutely could be
I mean the dragonlance books are D&D campaigns so I wouldn’t be surprised
ye, but dark heir is ostensibly set in our world (just with magic)
an yet, i can tell you exactly which class each of the characters belongs to
Really Dark Heir gen ||you called James a mage, but I think he's a warlock||
||Honestly, I'd say he's a sorcerer, since his magic is inherite||
I’m excited to read dungeon crawler Carl
But I’ll read great gatsby or smth rn
fair, I can see that
dark heir gen ||Unless we're calling Sarcean his patron||
||It's not like he gets his magic from Sarcean but he does sort of have a patron
maybe just not in the magical way||
That's where I was going yeah
Okay, thought - Dark Heir up to 19 ||If the S brand lets Sinclair possess his men, would Will technically be able to do the same 🤔||
Dark Heir 19 ||Will living up to his Bard class by using seduction 😌 ||
||Well, I suppose all I had to do to answer this question was to wait like ten pages||
||Ooooh. Okay, so the weird way Leclerk was acting on the ship, that was Will accidentally warging into him||
you've caught up now
yaay
Dark Heir 20 ||I can't figure out what Duval's angle here is 🤔 Like other than being an asshole to Violet, obviously. Does she not want Sinclair to win, does she hope Violet will eventually submit to her, does she just wanna see what happens if she pits Violet and Tom against each other...?||
||Pacat keeps taking cool magic animals and making them humans
At this point, we're gonna meet Blood of the Dragon and it's just gonna be some dude that can breathe fire sometimes||
Dark Heir 21 ||Oh gods, now Visander is dressed in yellow too?||
||His whole subplot is totally a Kill Bill reference||
you know
when i was looking at the special editions and such i ended up on reddit
I think I can show you that art now btw 🤔
Anyway there were multiple people talking about this
but I didn't remember enough details so I just went
and ignored it
oh? 👀
||It is art of Sarcean and ... Anh--- an--- past James||
👀 👀
I will be honest these scenes are generic enough, but idk if they're meant to be scenes on the book or not (I don't think they're relevant per se), but letting you know in case you'd rather not click? [Dark Heir]
This one's pretty similar to the cover of Dark Heir
The second one honsetly looks like it's ||suppose to be Will and James, not Anharion and Sarcean||
||Going by the heir length mainly||
But yeah, thanks for sharing
🤔
maybe
Well I don't think they're spoilery anyway
OH
||I think it might be when they were trying to cross the door? hmm, though that's not how James was doing it but artistic license||
||based on like the white background which could be the hall||
Maybe? Dark Heir general||Though I have no idea who the other two horse riders are supposed to be, then||
||bottom one looks evil? idk, top one looks... idk...
||
||top one looks like they're checking Will out and liking what they're seeing
||
||I mean, guy does look hot there||
i guess
like the pose and such
yeah
Dark Heir 21 ||my boy Cyprian levelled up his WIS off-screen 😌 ||
||he is no longer chihuahua||
just slightly above it?
||What would take make him, a bulldog? 🤔 ||
USHA
Two days
IT'S ACTUALLY SECOND HERE
Dark Heir 22 ||You know, for all the things Will inherited from his past self, I'm glad Sarcean's obsession with oranges wasn't one of them||
Atrus I almost pinged you and @ivory cypress earlier but i was like "no, I must. contain. the hype."
It didn't work
||instead it was the need to control and dominate things 😩 😳 ||
||better than an obsession with oranges||
||I mean, where would he even find oranges in victorian england||
good standards
||I'm glad he likes to puppet people around and own them instead of liking ORANGES. Have some taste!|| - Rasarr
Gonna try to reread the great gatsby
Aha
On chapter 2
Thunderhead 29 || what. the. hockeysticks. It's one thing for Dishonorable Scythe Goddard to be revived but..... dude. speechlessly horrified. Where the crap is this book going. I mean, it's cool with the pre-existing technology system but insanely psycho at the same time. Poor Tyger....||
yoooooo
Dark Heir 24 ||Is this a magic lesson or a makeout session? 🤨
||
||I could quote like half this scene and show it to someone and they'd swear it was a sex scene
||
26 ||"a world so cold and rayless that forests were set on fire in a desperate hope for light." That is a cool and horrific mental image
||
Dark Heir 27 ||Wait so were Will and Katherine related after all???
Pacat why||
Yes, it's obstensibly a record of Bilbo's journey, even though it's written in first person. There is an omniscient narrator , but I always imagined it was copyedited by Frodo or Gandalf or someone after the Scouring of the Shire. IIRC we're told that Pippin took it to MInas Tirith a bit later and Aragorn corrected stuff as well
Dark Heir 20 ||why does Duval sound like she's going against the Dark King/Sinclair? I thought they were on the same side, James seemed to believed so||
||then again I think Simon/Sinclairs seem to be clowns among all this magical beings||
WMTD 6 ||ooooh||
Dark Heir 24 ||James is too flirty 👀 it is hilarious to read this from Will Pov||
... ||Will is drooling, my guy, what
||
||this scene is more... it feels more sexual than many sex scenes I've read lol||
||I'm pretty sure Will wants James to realise... 😔 ||
Ooo. I didn't know there were more books planned for the Twilight Universe
There are??
yeah
Breaking Dawn ||It says that it will be narrated by Renesmee Cullen and Leah Clearwater||
Oh interesting
||huuuh, I don't recall/understand the logistic of it, however. Doesn't this mean he is blood of the Lady? And so, does that mean he might actually have her powers after all? Hidden/locked perhaps. Perhaps his powers are an amalgamation of both.||
||highkey kinda hyped for this?? Leah was easily one of my favorites, and nessie is there too I guess 😂||
I was going to make a joke about miss Stephane never setting me free but I think im happy to be in these trenches
At least its not yet another rewrite of twilight 😭
My thoughts exactly
Dark Heir 27 ||Maybe that's why his magic exploded, like the two powers aren't mixing well?||
Oh.my.god. I had forgotten this dialogue. Absolutely wild the amount of stuff I've forgotten. I remember the end clearly, and like the outline of the plot.
Dark Heir 28 ||James what are you doiiiing asking Mfing Will to do that 😩. I'm so torn||
Well, you've outpaced me again 😔
Yuuuup.
||I'll probably stop when the PoV changes. I love everyone else but my brain is like "give me more Will and James 😈 " ||
Dark Rise 28 ||Will having hallucinations of the good old days like he's in a survival horror game||
||tho honestly, he kinda is||
||I'm with James tho, if I saw an empty throne I'd totally try to sit in it||
Dark Heir 28 (not safe for Rasarr) ||‘If you still want me to order you around after that, I can.’ uuuuhmmmm 😳 ||
28 + Star Wars ||now that they've shown off the chain, my brain is picturing Anharion in the Princess Leia metal bikini
||
Dark Rise 28 ||Bruh, James, calm down. I guess Will is the least bad option from his perspective, but still||
||I did say before that I'm like 100% sure James is gonna end up collared at some point, and now I'm wondering if Will is gonna be forced to do it. Like maybe to save James's life, or to prevent Sinclair from getting control over him||
Noooo

Right?
Dark Heir 29 ||I had forgotten this too 😭 ||
||how long till Elisabeth puts 2 and 2...||
Dark Heir 30 ||oooooh... I see where this is from, delightful. ‘And if I run?’ ‘I will find you,’ Anharion said. ‘I will always find you. Try to run.’||
This was a lie
I can't put it down now, just a bit more 👀
The great gatsby 1||nick hasn’t met his neighbor yet had dinner with his friend and cousin married together||
my local library has got a new website. I think they need to fix their database next (both searches are from clicking on the series)
Ah, fantastic
