The thing about nambla seemingly being treated as equivilent to those other groups is pretty gross
Noooo should I?
Yeees
It doesn't have smut but I think you'll like the romance in it. And I think you'll certainly like the fmc
and the mmc
I have a picture of the mmc hold on
Emily Wilde is great
Minor spoilers Emily Wilde.
||oh, I didn't know the bee movie was based on a book||
Actual art, by Kudriaken 👀
I had sent this in #books-archive and it took me a while to find it in between all the, not cruel prince art and not kingfisher covers that I've spammed over the months
... til that Emily Wilde wasnt a contemporary to the Bronte Sisters or Jane Austen
I guess i was mixing it up with Oscar Wilde and Emily Dickenson or something
the first book is from 2023
and I think the author, Heather Fawcett, started publishing about a decade ago
She has a new book coming out in 2026 that seems to be also adult 👀
Seems cozy fantasy
My brother got me into the Ring of Fire series, just annoyed that the library doesn't have many of them on Libby.
Ooooh I like the vibe
Thousand Autumns 88 ||If I had a dollar for every time characters in this book got brain damage, I'd have 3 dollars, which isn't a lot but my guys, maybe it's time to start wearing helmets?||
I got Half a Soul
oooooh
I am curious! Reading other stuff first though
Every character in that novel
I love what I have read of that book
I finished The Nameless Land and [end] ||that pivot right at the end was brutal. I'm really hoping the "duology" is just part 1 of a series rather than this book being the final word in this setting. This ending feels good as the end of this particular two-book arc, but, especially with that abrupt bait-and-switch, it really feels like there's a bigger story that was just finding its feet in these books.||
[big spoilers for Nameless Land, do not click, Grey] ||I think the last 3rd of the book, or even 25% of the book had me ANXIOUS on the edge of my chair because wtf wtf wtf. I had sort of jokingly mentally thought the solution for the Haunt and THEN IT WAS THAT. And I was so worried the ending was gonna be some bittersweet thing damn||
And yes I'd love more stories in this world I love the world
I mean, it has spore based setting that's enough but it's just so good!
right it's been nearly a year for you
I was going to say "no way to forget that ending!" but I did read it consecutively lol
I DEFINITELY don't forget the ending
the stuff that starts to go first is place names and character names
Tertiary characters, and then secondary characters...
which is separate from the names of these people
I don't even remember main character names
but I know who the people ARE
I never learnt ||the haunt's name||
like you put it in front of me and I'm like YEAH THAT ONE but god forbid i spell that out
ha
I think I know ||Kem (is that right?) I THINK the lead is an El of some kind, the dragon haunt, then it's the prince, the prince's soldiers, and I know I've lost the distinctness between them that I need...||
Ok it looks like I won't be getting a copy of ADoW until ~December 1st
So I'll probably settle into an actual book next. I've got a few options but I'm not sure which I'll go with
what's AdoW?
A discovery of witches.
I gave into the temptation and am reading my new hardcover copy
aaah
options? 👀
And I put the audio for the other two on hold even if I have a million other books on hold too
Mmm I'm looking at Vicious, House of Leaves, the new Hunger Games, maybe Crime and punishment... or a reread
I'm really wanting to read malazan #6 but I don't have that on hand like I do the others
Thousand Autumns 93 ||Shen Qiao: "What if Hulugu's still alive?" Yan Wushi: "Eh, unlikely"||
||Hate to break it to you, but you are in a novel, in Shen Qiao brought this up as an option, then it means Hulugu is 100% alive and currently rapidly approaching your location for the sole purpose of kicking your ass||
my vote's on House of Leaves
How are you liking Swordcrossed? (Just so I can add more Freya Marske to your tbr 😇 )
(also, I had to read Crime and Punishment for school and I do not know why one would do so willingly
)
I'm enjoying it for sure!
Aw cmon it’s not his fault he doesn’t know genre conventions. And if he did know them, Yan Wushi wouldn’t care
i feel like he's smart enough to know genre conventions
I think right now what I want to read is like... either something light (I do have a vampire romance I could read) or something challenging/big by way of the structure or writing moreso than the book itself
Thousand Autumns ||but yeah, one of them is 100% fighting hulugu before the book is done, I'm just not sure who will be fighting||
I want to stay away from wotm-style super hyped big books
i was gonna say, none of those books you've listed seem light 😅
-# unless it's bonehunters which I might read next...
Yeah light is maybe the wrong word
I vote Vicious ofc
||Give. The man a break, he just got over being concussed so hard he had manners ||
I want something i can go into without feeling the... weight of how crazy and good the book supposedly is
I don't want to be going in with this expectation of life changing peak fiction
well, my House of Leaves suggestion seems rather wrong here considering it is one of the most famous novels ever 😅
Oh HoL is fine
At least so far as I know I've seen it mainly being talked about for the format tricks
That's not really what I'm worried about
It's more I just don't want the "oh when is this going to get good, am I enjoying this enough/right" sort of experience I sometimes have right now
Thousand Autumns ||true, bro got like the triple brain damage of magic concussion, being outed from power, and realizing he's in ~looove~||
||which, by the way, there is a phrase in Polish, "horse flirting", and I'm pretty sure that's exactly what Yan Wushi is doing to Shen Qiao right now
Unfortunately for him, I don't think Shen Qiao's gonna catch on any time soon, given Yan Wushi's normal behavior already looks like horse flirting||
||I KNEW messing around with Shen Qiao early on was gonna backfire on him||
Serves him right
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes
Last chance to vote
Ok this is none of the options I mentioned but I think I might start this lighter vampire romance novel I've had for a while, and then try to get my hands on Bonehunters
out of curiosity, which vampire romance?
"My Roommate Is a Vampire" by Jenna Levine
huh, i never heard of that one before
opening the description and I'm hit in the face with "True love is at stake"
lol
Thousand Autumns 95 (+ language) ||Yan Wushi before and after falling in love with the guy he'd picked up for the explicit purpose of tormenting for the funsies:||
I'm reading through the Misewa Saga and I never realized that (The Great Bear) ||of course when the portal fantasy involves time dilation you can get a full night's sleep in like 10 minutes||
Very handy
I'm reading Lord of Mysteries.

The main reasons I feel like there needs to be a sequel are (some speculation) [Nameless Land megaspoilers] ||(1) We're still playing coy with Ellen's nature. (2) I really think there actually is a sorcerer and the Pall is a red herring for the haunt's mission. (3) What's up with Ipis?! (4) Desolation map! (5) Why establish another Warden by name right at the end with little payoff? Sure, there's nothing wrong with leaving some mysteries to the reader, but this goes beyond that.||
American Elsewhere 18 ||I love how the eldritch horrors beyond the ken of mortal man are themselves being preyed on by a separate eldritch horror beyond the ken of mortal man and the first group of eldritch horrors
The book somehow manages to work in a serial killer picking people off one by one as a villain targeting the people who we assumed were the antagonists in addition to the very Annihilation coded setting and mysteries and it totally works, great horror novel||
Once I finish I'm gonna make the billboard from the first chapter and hang it in my room
Said by an elf queen in my current book: “You may call me Argent, if you like.”
Yes yes yes ||We only resolve 2 threads: who was betraying the prince and how, and how to get the haunt. Everything else is soooo open 👀 ||
I can ask for book recommendations in here right?
You can! What are you looking for?
prepares my arguemenr for eragon regardless of the answer
Reset the clock from 0 days since you’ve mentioned it back to 0 days
Yes! I need to get my numbers up 😔
What sort of book are you looking for?
Ever heard of fantasy author Brandon Sanderson?
The guy who wrote game of thrones? I love that show
twilight is good
Lord of the Rings ||is Gandalf the White supposed to be in some sense a different being/person than Gandalf the Grey? Or was his acting puzzled after hearing his name again just him being enigmatic for the sake of drama||?
||Too much of the halflings’ leaf||
Swordcrossed 33% ||Ooh, we've uncovered some plotting||
Okay, Half a Soul next
Yes, I think i will like the character work after all.
1 ||“Apologize for what?” Dora murmured absently. “For impacting your chances with my cousin, or for acting the bore?” Sir Albus’ eyes widened in shocked fury. Oh, Dora thought with a sigh. That was not the sort of thing that normal, frightened women say, I suppose.||
She is so autistic coded (confirmed by the author)
Lord of the Rings ||Yesn't? It's the same animating spirit but a new incarnation. He's basically trying to remember a past life. Notionally he's an ineffable being that has been shoved into a corporeal form. What would those corporeal experiences mean to his incorporeal self? When he's reincarnated, he kind of needs to reintegrate what his prior incarnation knew within the framework that being incarnated gives him to understand it, which he temporarily lost. It's a bit like picking up a book where you left off after putting it down for a while, or perhaps more like picking up a TTRPG campaign after an extended hiatus.||
Thousand Autumns 104 ||Obviously Hulugu is still alive 😌 ||
||tho ngl, at this point I think I've lost track of who's working with who among the sects 🤔 Like, are Hehuan working with the Gokturks (and Hulugu), or are they just taking advantage of Hulugu sweeping in???||
||Dunno, the political plotting in this book is leaving me a little confused||
You should read Peerless after this book
It shares a setting and is a decade or two later
oh, i definitely will
It won’t clarify any of those questions but it’s very good
It’s jerk4jerk too, no more Shen Qiao the untouchable saint who lets everything roll off his back
ooo 👀
Thousand Autumns 104 ||Lowkey, looking at the way this story arc has progressed, it's really funny how it's a perpetual stream of people interrupting the people who are interrupting the conference. Like first, surprise, Gu Hengbo is at the conference! Surprise, Hehuan are the conference! Surprise, Huanyue are at the conference! Surprise, Hulugu's at the conference!||
||If Yan Wushi doesn't show within the next few chapters I'll eat a shoe||
If you like hard magic systems, Foundryside. Soft magic systems, The Tainted Cup. If you like space operas (Books in the same vein as Dune), my go-tos are A Memory Called Empire and Leviathan Wakes. If you want sci-fi with lower stakes and cozier moments, The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is for you.
What kind of recs are you looking for?
Nods in RJB
I mean, I am currently binge-reading everything he wrote while I wait for Shadow of the Leviathan 3
One day
I will finish divine cities
But today, I'm reading Half A Soul
I should start closing up all the books I've midway tho
I actually never read the sequels to City of Stairs because I didn't know it was a trilogy 💀
Starting by Flight of Magpies, followed by Raven Scholar
Oh... I didn't love book 2. It's a good book, just something about it didn't click with me
I did though
And so I think I'll like book 3 more but i keep pushing it in favour of other books
Honestly, I'm glad that I didn't invest super heavily in Divine Cities when I read City of Stairs, Founders trilogy resonated way more with me
So far Ana and Din are my favourite books no question, from RJB
I've not read any standalone though
Valid
I guess I'm just a sucker for hard magic systems and [Foundryside minor] ||lesbian women in STEM||
The standalones are not as good as the series, although American Elsewhere might be an exception to that rule
Maybe I'll cycle back to them some day
Genuinely some of the best horror I've read
Uh oh
TBF, it didn't start as one
Thousand Autumns 105 ||Ah, and there's Yan Wushi 😌 My footwear is safe from eating||
||I kinda wanna someone else to rush into the scene next just to continue the running gag, but I feel like we've ran out of impressive enough characters||
108 ||"In the end, Yan Wushi had brought this misfortune upon himself." I love that even the author is making fun of Yan Wushi for fumbling Shen Qiao
||
Thousand Autumns 120 ||...you know, I feel like this plot twist with who the "real" villain on the mountain is would work better if this guy had been mentioned more than once before this current arc🤔||
Leviathan Wakes chapter 20
|| So far the book is really good, super intriguing but I'm still waiting for that moment that completely locks me in
I really like how the two povs stories interact with one another in very indirect ways, what Holden does in his chapters has repercussions in Millers||
some of T Kingfisher's older stuff i've only been able to find on Kindle, alas, but it did lead to this
this is...... so funny
I think kindle might think you might perhaps like Kingfisher, it's just a hunch though
i've been given a list of older queer science fiction and with older books it's extremely hit or miss where it's even available 😩 but anyway, got Mission Child by Maureen McHugh on its way, and an ebook of Ammonite by Nicola Griffith
Babel-17 by Samuel R. Delany is alos next on the list
Swordcrossed 9 ||God these two are disasters||
9!?
9?
Kingfisher and Tor seem to be gleefully rereleasing her backcatalog
You might get the remaining ones more easily inthe future
last time you commented you said a later chapter
oh, you said a %, am dumb
Yup
her back catalog is ENORMOUS, i'm not necessarily holding my breath as i chase em down
@proper silo did you know there’s a cartoon adapting thousand autumns up to the part where Yan Wushi gets his concussion
have started watching Thousand Autumns, Yan Wushi is really just aura farming every other scene
But also, frenchkisses for the environment artist(s) and cameraman, some scenes look like intricate paintings
-# #I will in fact do art studies on this series #thousand autumns #danmei #godoframbles #cdrama
Assassins Apprentice ch12 ||So Regal is the bastard of the 2nd Queen and Galen right?||
I have seen screenshots of it; not sure if I'm interested in watching, though, when it's incomplete
Im enjoying the characters of Half A Soul as much as I expected
Ch 8 ||Howeveeeeer, I don't believe Elias to be wholly human hmm||
you really really like them?
The fmc is absolute
||i think she would be this blunt and forward even if she had her soul tbh||
||Elias is a bit more cliche but still very enjoyable||
||Albert seems pretty normal but he's fun and nice||
8 ||I was about to say Elias would be perfect with a hint of mischief and he just sent her flowers which i do think are a hint of mischief given the situation
||
||Dora realising Vanessa is kind of gross in the way shes so selfish and uncaring is being delightful||
Do you want a yes/no answer?
Half A Soul 11 ||I think Dora must have found an ally in Lady Carroway 👀 ||
I should re start half a soul
Half a Soul 16 ||okay, i was right about Elias, but also, Dora 1 is now with Dora 2 stuck in Faerie... lol||
18 ||This fae ball is utterly ridiculous
||
And done
||So I suppose they actually went back to Faerie, but idk about the rumours of her being whole again 🤔 ||
@minor sleet New Honor Harrington short stories are out!
Oh gods, that series is still going?
I remember reading that when I was 14 and there were already like 12 books out
Always more!
No thank you
SC 9 ||I hope mattie gets to crash out by the end of this||
Oooooohhhhh
Treekitty time!!!!
I'm guessing this might be answered in future books
@zinc flicker that's another recc for you. Half A Soul.
ooh thanks I'll add to my list
yeah that's one of the two Olivia Atwater books I mentioned for you
Children of Time series is getting a fourth book next year 👀
I swear Tchaikovsky is giving Brandon a run for his money in prolific-ness
I am pretty sure he is "technically" more prolific than Sanderson
I think the only thing Sanderson has on other authors is that SA books are massive
Yeah the amount of books Tchaikovsky has been announcing is kinda wild
Curious to see how that new Children of Time book goes. Books 1 and 2 were goated imo and then book 3 was interesting but definitely weaker
Children of Time is one of the 11 books I have at chapter 5 right now 😩
I think I'll try to finish one of those 11 tonight
Whereas I think each Of Time book has been better than the previous one, so I have high hopes.
Ruin was my favorite personally so far
Very hyped for a fourth entry though
Children of Strife is the name
I dnfed the second one. It was one of the few times when I actually got bored with the book that initially excited me
Cool! Love to see such a skilled author continue to get recognition
so uh what actualy is this award
Wild!
This is the opportunity where I take the time to say to anyone who hasn’t read her Broken Earth trilogy, please do yourself that favor. The Fifth Season is such an unbelievably good book. Execution is incredible. Cannot recommend it enough. One of the absolute best
another I have at ch5
Such a powerful book
Loved the series so much
@wraith lynx
Im working on it! 🤣
I read her Dreamblood Duology this year and loved it
Book 2, The Shadowed Sun, was amazing
Friends and Comrades of the jury. I have an audible credit, and I don't know what to use it on. Do I use it on:
- My stormlight reread (So, Rhythm of War)
- DCC 8 (preorder, can probably wait)
- Brigands and Breadknives/Rereading Legends and Lattes with the audiobook
- Demon in White
or any other book like tainted cup/will of the many/whatever that i haven't read
i need recommendations
What kinda thing do you feel like?
like vibes/themes/genre?
I will always say Tainted Cup but maybe you're in the mood for something else
I wouldn't use it for a reread.
I'm honestly on like, a reading dry streak because of college
I don't actually know what Tainted Cup is in terms of vibes
I would say tainted cup
Holmes & Watson but fantasy, more gay, and slight body horror.
biological technology fantasy world with kaiju behind a distant sea wall and it's a murder mystery
right, it's a biopunk fantasy with investigator and assistant duo mystery, starting by them needing to solve a murder
"Holmes & Watson, more gay" they're gonna be EVEN MORE GAY?
Woaw.
😔
Not that kinda gay, the mc (which is the assistant to the investigator) is bisexual
the Watson expy is the lead and the pov, the Holmes is a cranky crass older woman
Absolute gold.
they're both pleasantly hypercompetent too and the biopunk/slight body horror is superb
I did really really enjoy Legends and Lattes, some of the few books I've managed to fit into college time. 😅
👀 I do love Biopunk.
Also, I think Tainted Cup has like perfect pacing
And I'm not one to generally mind pacing or even prefer faster or slower (each book requires its own thing), but I don't generally think it's "perfect"
I have been recommended tainted cup soooo much. I've been also recommended WotM and Demon in White a lot, even if.. I don't know if I want to complete Suneater after that book 2 hellfest.
manifests at the mention of WoTM
I don't know Demon in White, and from WotM, honestly if you're currently busy with uni, I feel Tainted Cup is like... an easier swallow?
Yes :3
Not that book is easier but I think I'd find it easier to read if I was very busy, than WotM
oh?? I dnfed book 2 early, I didn't get to a part I would call hellfest 👀
Very specific mid-ish part of book 2 (iirc, it's been like months) for suneater ||The pacing is hellishly slow to me, and also, there was a lot of very weird anti-transhumanism rhetoric using a lot of charged language which can also be seen as weird transphobia rhetoric, which isn't a dig on the author, but I felt uncomfortable listening to it. The ending is good, but does not warrant the whole thing. ||
huhhhh
Frick, I've been saying I'd not get Folk of the Air unless it was some special edition
and then i open my book store (don't ask why I do that to myself)
73€
What're the individual covers like?
Interally screaming rn
dunno, I was just staring and i came here screaming before daring clicking on it
It doesn't show, which is rather odd
comes out december 1st
My bday is dec 16th...
Surely I can gift this to myself...
GAH I can't find the covers anywhere
If I look the individual book I do find this
but that looks like a different edition all together?
confused noises
It does say this releases on December 1st too?
idk if it's these covers or not
I'll take any fancy things that's not the og covers tbh
Well I've gone to the publisher site and it does seem to be that 🤔
It includes all short stories too which i only read one and didn't like it lol
end... the cover for Wicked King...
And the cover for Queen of Nothing... I... think imma spoil this...? It's probably not a spoiler until I said I'm going to spoil it but I'm going to spoil it
Queen of Nothing ALL ||Best picture of the 2 together
||
WOAH
the art is gorgeous for all of them
uuuuh, what to do, it's limited edition til it runs out, do I preorder? I hate preordering
Assassins Apprentice ch16 ||Im a little confused why Fitz is so depressed after the Galen incident, is it something Galen has done using the skill, emptiness that potentially comes after the bliss of the skill if you let it take over or due to the cult like manipulation Galen has been doing to these kids? (Or a mixture)||
||Also I guess Galen is too young to be Regal's dad? I cant remember exactly how it is but something like Regal is around 10 years older than Fitz and Galen is 2 years older than Chivalry who was around 10 years older than Regal?||
||I expect after this event btw, that Forging has something to do with the skill||
I want to click so bad but I'm only on chapter 1 so I'll hold back
oh my god these are all so beautiful but (Queen of Nothing ALL, NO COSMIC) ||SNAKE CARDAN SNAKE CARDAN SNAKE CARDANNNNNN||
thou mustnt
Ill behave, dont worry~
here i'll give you a gift in media to make up for it
Assassin's Apprentice 16 ||you are definitely picking up on some kind of affiliation between Galen and Regal, though!||
I did cave in, bought the pack 😩
Inevitable ruin 77 || Li Na definitely shot up my favourite list this book, I say let her cook ||
So, I know I said I wanted a light read next... but I'm going to start malazan #6
This inevitable ruin 81 || I literally said Epitome Tag was performing Perfect Cell BS 5 minutes before the book literally confirmed him as a cyborg and therefore basically Perfect Cell.||
Very light
Certainly easier than the books I read right before it. :P
Oh?
Well, that is to say Memories of Ice anyway. But I struggled through the Green Bone Saga books, and Memories of Ice is much easier to read in comparison.
This inevitable ruin 85 || the…pickaxe…. Oh no. Brittany has been possessed by Ysalte||
Has anyone read the Nero Wolfe books? The Ana and Din stories are making me want to try them
storygraph down for anyone else?
Cloudflare is geneally having a fit, so probably.
ah, explains
I'm back to reading the Magpie Lord series and uh... Flight of Magpies 6 ||they're breaking up and damn, i feel so upset with both of them, realistically both being rather toxic in a way it's almost triggering, having lived some of this 😩 ||
Maybe I saw this coming somehow and that's why I stopped right before it
oh dip
Im still going to finish it
This is probably the best character work in the entire series but it's making me go

Goddammit Grey 😭
really liked these! would recommend! even to adult readers willing to look at this age group books again
I love those books
Game: give a book you’re currently reading or read recently the title it would have as a light novel
Like one of the really long, descriptive titles?
I was thinking on it but nothing comes to mind
Oh, memnoch the devil...
Yes
I can think of one for Memnoch better than my book
Spoilers for The Magpie Lord (I hate every word that's about to come out through my fingertips) ||When the poor Magician met the exiled Lord and didn't want to fall in love but it turns out he's the only one that can channel the Lord's power?!||

Memnoch ||"that time I went to heaven and hell because the devil and God wanted me to help them, but I accidentally did what they wanted"?||
God, I hate this too
but that sounds so Lestat
Codenames I hate this game
sadly I've played it so much due to my work that it comes too naturally 😩
What do you do for work that you have to generate light novel titles
Anyway I’m currently reading Long Live Evil and this is almost too easy
I don't, but I work at a manga publisher
“Reborn as a Low Grade Villainess in Another World! Can I Steal the Flower to Avoid Dying of Cancer???!”
we get those titles and have to generate something more appealing to the western audience
Oh yeah that would do it
Oh, Long Live Evil is one I got halfway
no particular reason I just got distracted
the evilness is so dumb it was pretty fun
I really should get to finish all my halfway books 😩
Yeah, dumb but fun describes this book very well
yeah
but this was when i kept jumping from book to book like crazy and it claimed it as its victim
i remember liking ||the one guard/merc that seems like an asshole?||
So tempting
My favorite part so far is when the lead character asked him ||Are other people not real to you? And he said yes. And she thought for a second that he had also been isekai’d before realizing that no actually he’s just a sociopath ||
Lia or the maid?
the maid
I do remember this I think
The maid is the only practical and clever person in the whole story
she is very pragmatic
she's also very sleazy and weasely
in like a smart way
I've only met one more character besides those 2 but idr the chapter so hard to spoil it
🐍 ?
oh i read up to 10, Long Live Evil ||The other guy who was also isekaid is the only other one I met||
idr the name
||that is like a mafia of sorts?||
ah yes
Golden Cobra
So I'm not gonna start it just yet (but soon!), but I got a compilation book of The Books of the South + The Silver Spike
I'm noticing that TSS is last in the order, but I thought it was supposed to be read first. What would you recommend? @ripe tide
It’s one of those prequels written decades later that assumes you’re familiar with the original work
I am already feeling separation anxiety from Carl and donut
I relate too much to that pantless man who yells at his cat
I hear the solution is to reread and marvel at the foreshadowing despite Dinniman claiming to be a pantser not a planner (maybe he just takes very good notes of what he's done thus far so he can do good callbacks)
Whatever his methods, he sings sweet music into my ant capitalist heart in every book. While making every character very alive and relatable
Something deverell/shirtaloon doesn’t do quite as well tbh
Side characters especially in books 4-6 really drag and shrivel into just roles for the plot
HWFWM book 7 chapter 5 || Jason your high school level scathing critique of Wolverine is silly. He doesn’t suck he’s just popular and you’re a contrarian||
Also another point for dinniman, he actually titles his damn books
HWFWM doesn’t even have subtitles
Not that HWFWM and DCC are in competition for anyone but me
I wish Munchkin was still popular
A DCC munchkin expansion would kick ass
Yeah read it first. It’s just an omnibus ordering thing.
Children of Time Part 2 ||I’m loving the level of detail in the worldbuilding and science. The spiders really are fascinating, wonder if we’ll see them evolve to a point where they can actually communicate with the humans. I assume that’s where this story is heading.||
I finished Red Rising over the weekend, 3.75/5
I've heard Golden Son is better so I've got a copy coming.
Can anyone recommend me spider man comics for someone who hasn't read any? Preferably from probably like the 90s or later but I'm open to whatever
So here's the thing about the last couple decades of Spider-Man comics...
continue, dont leave us hanging pizza
There are some that are a bit crap
But not everything post one more day is worthless
I can recommend some Batman 😄
The Ultimate Spider-Man run is a safe bet. Ultimate comics being a semi defunct imprint of marvel where we had like modern (early 2000s) reimaginings of the marvel universe.
Not everything in that imprint is great, tbh a lot of people will probably say Spider-Man and the eventual introduction of Miles Morales are really the only worthwhile entry. But still
90s Spider-Man is a mess
And tbh I’ve never really read that main book outside of the Clone Saga cause of my being a big Scarlet Spider/Ben Reilly fan
There’s Spider-Man 2099 which again is basically the most well regarded 2099 comic.
spider-man: blue and spider-man: life story are good short miniseries
There’s “New Ultimate” universe comics that I’ve been hearing good things about. Long story short a villain remade the Ultimate Universe (he was originally from the OG one from the 2000s oooOooooh spooky!)
New Ultimate Spider-Man I have read some stuff
life story is elseworlds tho
It’s very good
Well the stuff I’ve read was. I can’t give a full review tbh
Oh yeah spider-man blue and life story. Both really fun
Well. Life story isn’t fun. But it’s a great read lmao
Anything I could really recommend is random niche stuff I have read on less than savory comic book sites. And I both won’t advocate for such things or recommend something that wasn’t interesting enough to still be available without crazy after market expense
Superior Spider-Man was fun
But given that is like a whole thing that came out after Amazing Spider-Man 900
Not the most newbie friendly thing but you can always google context
Superior Foes of Spider-Man was more fun
Uhhhmmmm
Kaine Scarlet Spider was a good run for the clone Kaine. But it’s unfinished and sadly ends on no resolution and hasn’t really been continued in any comics that I know of
I’d recommend some Venom comics. But honestly the Venom overload was part of why I gave up reading comics most recently
So for a list instead of this stupid ramble
Ultimate Spider-Man
The clone Saga for the lulz, I’d just look up a reading list.
Spider-Man 2099
Spider-Man Blue
Spider-Man Life story
New Ultimate Spider-Man
Superior Spider-Man
Superior Foes of Spider-Man
Kaine Scarlet Spider
I would say stuff like “Gwen Spider-Woman/Ghost Spider” cause of the Spiderverse movies…..but I have heard that on the whole. The movies are her best work lmao
The various “spider Gwen” comics I’ve heard reviews of are short lived and a bit boring
I wouldn’t even recommend any of the versions of the Spider-Verse event itself tbh
Got through ch 33 in Mad Ship last night, I feel very close to just finishing now that the Hobb third act thing has happened (though she could still surprise me in the last 100 pages). ||it's funny because Malta started the book on my hatelist and stayed there but ever since they launched Paragon she seems to have finally clued in that there's stranger, greater things afoot. Kennit is fascinating because he's also terrible but somehow lucks into good fortune and loyalty. Really hope poor Wintrow catches a break soon...||
||Malta's character development is insane||
This is very helpful, I appreciate it!
Np
I just know A Short Stay in Hell will be five stars
Hot take: I didn't like it and think it absolutely overrated
I liked the fifth season and the obelisk gate
But I found stone sky to be a bit of a lackluster ending
But I really liked the characters
Oh is this the one about immortality?
I've had that one on my list for a little while
(first page spoilers)
It's really really short
Elric + Witcher math
I swear, if Geralt and Yennefer by any chance could have had a child, it would have been Elric.
-# #artists on tumblr #digital art #elric of melnibone #elric #elric of melniboné #the witcher #the witcher fanart #the witcher books #geralt of rivia #geralt z rivii #yennefer of vengerberg #yennefer z vengerbergu #yenralt
Oh two series I've been meaning to read
A Short Stay in Hell is good!
I finished Mad Ship and I've got Ship of Destiny in my library pile; I am SO ready to go. I'm enjoying Liveship Traders so much more than Farseer sorry Fitz
||I figured dragons were a central think but wowowowow that last bit with Malta going to release Tintaglia and Reyn thinking she's dead but going to finish the release and Paragon remembering that he's a dead cocoon it's alllll coming together||
hi, do any fantasy book recs?
What are you in the mood for? Any particular tone, plot direction, etc?
something focused on fast paced action and combats
Oh you were the one looking for anime-like Brandon books in #general earlier
I feel like Cradle is fast, and #1404905613674283041 likes seeing reactions
...ADoW came in 7 days early. And two days after I started reading a different book
This is sotf all over again
Last horizon is by the same author as cradle
Though idk if it’s actually fast or I’m just ravenous with books…
Anyone notice a lot of hivemjnds in recent fiction?
@viral fractal
Not personally, but i dont think I've been reading the right genres for that
And I have finished ReZero Volume 28. Not the most exciting volume, but it's building up.
Project Hail Mary ||I refuse to believe that separating the ship and having it spin on cables is better than making the main part of the ship into a centrifuge||
Oh great…. I can’t wait for you to start it though.
If plans don't change, I think BH will carry me to Christmas, I'll probably read sotf straight after, maybe ADoW early jan/late Dec?
Or I'll delay sotf (again) and flip the order
Ahhhh Thats so much….
Im so used to getting books done in a few days in a lot of circumstances that I was expecting sooner.
No pressure though.
Yeahhhh
I'm not the fastest with books but these are also three big ones 😭
I'm not sure how big SOTF is but BH is a solid 1200 pages or so and those books take me like... a few weeks-a month or so, usually
If these were shorter books I could probably be onto ADOW in a week or two but nooo I had to choose three of my larger reads for the year to go at the same time
Rip
How do agatha christie books have misogynistic undertones to them you are a woman
“Psychologically speaking i wouldnt say This is a womans crime” what are you on about
Internalized misogyny?
Probably but its still weird to me
Misogyny isn't tied to gender
It makes me sad, but I'm not surprised
Well, i finished one of the books I had mid way. Now I'm down to 9
[RR Ch.4] ||...wow. I was expecting some dirty trick so the Gammas would get the Laurel anyway.
I was expecting some goalpost-shifting along the lines of 'Well, yes, Lambda did exceed the Quota, but they got injured in the process so Gamma gets the Laurel'
I was not expecting them to ignore Lambda's success altogether!
(And calling Mu and Chi lazy when they failed to meet quotas because people died.)
Sad thing is, this strat is proven in-text to work. Show horribly unfair preferential treatment to one group, so all the others hate that one group, rather than all the clans siding with each other to take down the common enemy.
Is it too soon for me to cheer on the rebellion?||
||not at all||
Dang I've really been not making progress on swordcrossed
Well, I've just not been reading at all outside of morning/afternoon lately
SC 37% ||A KISS???? ALREADY???||
[RR 6] || Eo...😭
These people murdered a 16-year-old girl for singing a song. I don't rusting care that it was explicitly a song about overthrowing the Golds, the fact of the matter is that it was just a song.
And they forced her loved ones to finish the job. And now her corpse will hang until it's a skeleton, in full view of everyone who knew and loved her.
And I was hoping they'd join the rebellion together.
But no, she's the Mare to his Kelsier.
Survive.||
|| It is poetically beautiful that they play her song over her death in the recording, to show what happens if you defy them, and it has the opposite effect
Because that video? That video is them brutally murdering a child just for defiance. ||
Golden Son and Morning Star are in the post! Excitement is at 100.
[RR 14] || Brr, the slow horror of being gradually turned into something so wholly different from you that your nearest and dearest wouldn't recognise you...poor Darrow.
Matteo and Mickey are interesting characters. I enjoy Matteo and Darrow's dynamic.
"You've taken everything else from me, I'm keeping the name 'Darrow'."
"...I think I preferred it when you weren't Gold."
Sorry Dancer, that's not Gold, just stubbornness!||
Assassins Apprentice all ||Not quite sure how Regal has gotten away with his life tbh||
[RR 29] || Titus is Red. Titus is Red. How the flip did he manage to get into the program?

I almost feel sorry for him. It seems like Golds inflicted on someone he loved the fate he inflicted on them. He's still a monster for how he retaliated, but...
And Darrow is...concerning. He's becoming so cruel and cold. I feel that he'll be utterly changed from the man Eo loved once this is all over.||
The book I've been looking for since july
Is finally available again
I ordered it at my local store, they'll message when it's there 😌
Me watching you read peak ^
Peak indeed. Just got to chapter 36.
|| Darrow's scathing view on men viewing women as prizes and trophies
And then he has Tactus whipped for attempted rape, then has Pax whip him to make the point that nobody is above the law.
Succinctly addressing Tactus' belief that he is above the law, and then showing mercy.
Bitter pill to swallow, given what Tactus is guilty of, but still...
Awe-inspiring.||
Which series is this?
Children of Time Part 3 ||well that whole story took a turn. Love the spiders finding human influence and saying “you could make a religion out of this”||
Book is so peak
Which one?
SOTF is strength of the few of the hierarchy (?) series. BH is Bonehunters from malazan, which often takes me a while
Oh, I thought it was a new series or something, not two unrelated books. Nvm 🙂
Oh, no worries
There was something I wanted to read but then I forgot what it was going to be
I realized the only Dan Wells book I've read was Dark One: Forgotten, which I technically didn't read because it's audio-only and it's technically not just a Dan book because he and Brandon co-wrote it. Anyway, I decided to rectify it by putting a couple of his books on hold on Libby.
"I Am Not A Serial Killer" because that's the first book I hear about in association with him, and "A Night of Blacker Darkness" because its premise sounds a little interesting.
Oh I need to finish the first Serial Killer trilogy
[Golden Son 23] ||
Sevro is with Ares
Right?
He's not a double agent. I don't want him to be a double agent.
And Quinn died 😭😭||
[RR series general up to Golden Son] || Bruh. First Cassius over Julian, now the Telemanuses over allying with the man that killed Pax. Darrow is a master at doing things that will cause his blood-brothers to want to stab him in the gut.
DARROW OF LYKOS, LISTEN TO YOUR GIRLFRIEND FOR ONCE. DON'T TRUST THE JACKAL.||
||Guys with cool nicknames are always trustworthy||
|| Not when allying with them comes at the cost of making your Celtic buddy's family want to tear your head off.||
RR ||I honestly hated this twist. Like sorry, but I can't really be all 'oh he was hurt too' when he is brutally SA'ing women. I felt the book was trying to say the golds turned him into that too much when in reality he was just evil.||
Same tags, series general upto the last book ||I think in general the series is purely aesthetics and vibes over coherent logic.||
||It's like a tabletop game with op protagonists and a strict dm who keep trying to out bs each other.||
|| You know, as much as I'm enjoying the series, I do get that vibe||
RR/series themes ||i mean, this makes a lot of sense with the themes of the story. Death begets death and all. He was hurt, he caused more hurt.||
Same ||while I wouldn't say it's purely that, rule of cool will probably always win out in this series||
|| you see the Mustang vision!!!!!!||
|| Lowkey shipping Reapstang||
Also holy moly you’re burning through the books!
I really am, I read very fast 😅
I was going to try and pace myself till Christmas when I'll get 4 and 5, but, uh
Am already nearly at the end of Golden Son 😅
Happens lol
Once I got going on basically any of the books they were difficult to put down
Yeah i think the series as a whole took me like no time at all
RR was 4 days, IG was 6 and LB was 10
SoTF can take 12-13 if I play my cards right
Aka read all day today 😂
"Tales of Newel and Doren" is weird in that it's a fun little side adventure novella of light reading... that you have to have read the entirety of Fablehaven and Dragonwatch to understand without some major spoilers for both series.
I thought I reached the end of Thousand Autumns because I hit the epilogue, and then I discovered there is epilogue part 2 right after
And then epilogue part 3
And now I turned the page and I'm seeing epilogue part 4
...I am a little scared to check how many epilogues this book has
How very Sanderson.
Oh there is also epilogue part 5
The epilogues will continue until the romance improves, I suppose
Thousand Autumns ||five epilogues in and the alleged main couple is still not together
||
Epilogue six, give it up for epilogue six ||cause they finally kissed (like, consensually. I'm pretty sure this was a confession)||
128 chapters and 6 epilogues, talk about slow burn
Loool
Sounds awful
How many more epilogue
Did they just write another novel and named them epilogues?
Seven epilogues
There were a total of seven epilogues
on which note, i am done with the main story 😌 there's still some extras, but i can leave them for later
i have thoughts
I read this and thought you meant there were seven more 😭
nope, the seventh epilogue is the final one
So overall, Thousand Autumns is good, but I wouldn't say great; it's certainly no Erha or Heaven Official's Blessings. You could make a drinking game out of all the phrases the author loves to repeat over and over (if I had a dollar for every "within moments, they exchanged hundreds of blows", I could recoup the cost of buying this book). The character work is also kinda hm. Like the main couple is great, and there's one or two memorable side characters (Bai Rong my beloved
), but there are more than 50 names characters in this book and most of them have one of three stock personalities. Like you could swap out names for half the supporting cast and I'm not sure how long it'd take me to notice. There's also an issue in that the closer we come to the book's ending, the more plots are resolved off-screen (can't believe they offscreen'd my girl Bai Rong's moment of glory...).
Which is a pity cause the plot is really good and actually interesting! I liked the political manouvering, and I liked the developing relationship between the main leads, and the character development they go through. And like I said, the main couple are both great. And I do like that unlike other books about cultivators that I've read, this one is actually about cultivation; about fighting, and learning, and improving yourself, and all that. Most of the time, cultivation is just kind of background setting, and even when characters learn, they do so off-page, but this one really gets into like... the fact that these characters are master martial artists. And it also leads to cool fight scenes (one that I'm pretty sure were inspired by games cause I swear the way the author describes everyone's abilities, their special attacks come with cutscenes)
So yeah, I think I like it, but it's certainly not the best I've read
...anyway, now that I'll no longer be bothering y'all with yapping about Thousand Autumns, Erha vol 10 comes out tomorrow so I'll be bothering y'all with yapping about Erha instead 😅
Erha 3 is one of the things I do have midway that i wanna finish before the end of the year
I believe in your ability to do so 💪 (and maybe your desire to liveblog it so I can munch on popcorn 😉 )
I will if i do!
Just for you and Codenames
but also the bit I wanted to liveblog the most on book 2 was the most absolutely-can't-liveblog-in-this-channel scene
well, if you do want to say something, all three of us are in you-people
Project Hail Mary ||I'm sure the main character must have explained it because it's that kind of book, but centrifugal gravity is very sensitive to the radius of your circular motion. If you make the radius of your centrifuge too small, you get very different gravity at your head than at your feet, not to mention Coriolis forces acting on your inner ear. Also, if your propulsion system is oriented along the axis of rotation of your centrifuge (hard to see where else it could go), then centrifugal gravity and linear accelerative gravity are going to be perpendicular to each other when you're under thrust, which isn't great. Your living space needs to be configurable for each mode. The cables allow you to have a much smaller spacecraft without sacrificing centrifuge radius and allow the living space to orient correctly in relation to each mode of gravitation. The biggest challenge with this arrangement is probably managing vibrations, plus the mechanical complexity of the linkage.||
mmm cover
Project Hail Mary ||There's at least two more efficient conformations that I can think of than swinging on cables. I'm honestly surprised that the cables didn't snap, or something else didn't break due to the insane torsion||\
Project Hail Mary ||In principle the cables aren't "swinging". They should just be under tension. Of course, when Gemini XI tried something like that, they had insane vibrations in the cable, forcing them to abort the demonstration, and I'm not aware of anyone having tried it since. A truss would probably be simpler. It wouldn't retract, but the only reason the cables retract is because you can't push on a rope.||
||I didn't say the cables were swinging, I said they were swinging on the cables. Seriously 50k kg weights held together by two large cables, being swung in opposite directions and so many things are likely to go wrong||
And yeah that's one of the major problems
Oh hey, last Sun Eater book came out. That means I can read the series now
Would Dresden Files be considered Urban Fantasy?
I’ve heard some people call it Low Fantasy as well
Though I suppose those aren’t really mutually exclusive
Low Fantasy honestly sounds a little derogatory
It was originally coined to mean any fantasy in this world, as opposed to high fantasy in a fictional one
The way I read low fantasy is a world where magic or other fantastical stuff is fairly minimal or rare, but still present. Especially in the sense of, it doesn't affect daily life and while it can be an important part of the story large parts of the substance of the story aren't about magic.
I'd say game of thrones the show, but not asoiaf, fits that criteria.
Dresden doesn't at all. Him having magic is the entire point at a level.
I know. I just haven't heard the term since I was a kid, and even then I didn't really like it
I've also heard Dresden Files referred to as 'Milady Fantasy' a couple of times. I have no idea why though. I've listened to the first few books, and Dresden doesn't strike me as even slightly misogynistic.
I'm really enjoying the series though. It's really good.
Sort of Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Chicago PD
I wouldn't say he's misogynistic in as much as he's just attracted to every woman and as soon as a woman is in scene you can be damn sure he's going into detail about how attractive she is, and this will happen a lot, even in otherwise serious moments. There's a moment in book 3 where ||I swear he compliments that vampire lady inwardly 10 times in that very serious sequence, even during the times she's threatening to kill him.||
The scenarios also always seem to be warped by a certain amount of... Hmmm... Logic that is definitely aiming to push things in a sexual direction whether or not it makes sense. Book 2 ||the werewolf scene near the end made me laugh out loud.||
I'd say they're still mostly good books and it didn't bother me too much once I got used to it, but it's definitely... Something.
I love lestat's intros
The supernatural and pointless sexual situations get weirder and creepier. I enjoyed the series despite that, but plenty of people are uncomfortable with it for a good reason
I have an extremely specific scene in mind when saying it
but it's from somewhere between books 6 and 9
The first book was so chauvinistic I didn’t even bother finishing it
It wasn’t anything specific, just the vibes
I think this type of thing (I've not read the books) is generally taken as objectifying which in turn tends to be part of a misogynistic behaviour
Yeah that's a very fair argument.
watching Yan Wushi try to make up for lost ground is a gift and nothing less than he deserves
-# #yanshen #thousand autumns #qian qiu #shen qiao #yan wushi #nobody's ever done it worse than you buddy! congrats! #you fumbled someone it should be basically impossible to fumble! #and now *you've* realised *you're* in love after basically telling him where he could take his affection and stick it #astounding #idiot #my art
@proper silo

Thousand Autumns ||watching Yan Wushi reap what he saw was definitely a highlight of the last ~40 or so chapters of the book||
||I'm pretty sure Shen Qiao fell for him despite his attempts rather than because of them||
Absolutely
also
my phone just let me know that it finished downloading book 10 of Erha
and i can't read it yet
the cover is so pretty though
I wanna hang it on my wall
omg that face
Usually if you get the special editions of the final book they come with postcards that are mini posters of the book covers
But yeah ||Taxian-Jun ||is having a Bad Time
[name] is having a bad time is like, the last volume and a half in a nutshell
like i'm pretty sure you could insert any name and it'd work
i wonder which ones they'll do, then 🤔
feels like the sort of info that should be out there
Yes it does but they deliberately don’t show you the extras in advance
Honestly, Dresden's male gaze never really bothered me. I found it realistic more than annoying
Which sucks because some of them are not good
i suppose i'll wait till it comes out, someone's gonna post their merch haul online eventually
Eye roll, yeah guys notice boobs, moving on
There’s always that one person on Reddit who manages to get theirs a week early via bookstore error or shipping mix up and is eager to show off
Atticus from Iron Druid was way worse lol
hahah yeah
i think i managed to read one and a half of those books
The ending was pretty dumb
For Dresden, I mean you can have no sexual interest in someone, but still appreciate their attributes
When you’re writing science fiction, THE most important thing to ask yourself isn’t how soft or hard you want the science to be, but to ask yourself “who would Shohreh Aghdashloo play in this story” and if you do not have an answer, re-evaluate
-# #I’m only like 30% joking #the expanse #shohreh aghdashloo #see also: #Star Trek #mass effect #x-men
and Destiny 2
Iliad 5 ||Shapeshifter, do not sit with me and whine. Of all the gods who live on Mount Olympus you are the one I hate the most.
Ayo Zeus chill||
Rise of Kyoshi ~30% ||TRAUMA. I feel like Kyoshi's going to attempt to wrestle Yun from the spirit because he feels like part of her Team Avatar||
Anyone has any of this books ?
The lord of the rings omnibus hardback by Houghton Mifflin
Catching fire and Mockingjay hardback by scholastic
man if you need a long (and I mean like WaT long) book to read I suggest reading The Wandering Inn, there's like 17 books and in audio book format the majority are like 50-60 hrs long.in fact I highly recommend them if you read audio books, because ngl no one I know has the time to read a physical books that long
but they're not for the faint of heart there is a lot of stuff te keep track of
Rise of Kiyoshi 55% ||👀👀👀 an airbender mother huh? Interesting.. When she had the vision of people when trying to open the box earlier I wondered if it might be Yangchen but she didn't have snake tattoos. I love the idea that it's an opera company as cover for the dao fei group||
I have the LoTR. It's very pretty.
Could you weight it please
The black one
Oh haha, def thought you were asking about the illustrated one. Sure, I can do that
Thank you very much
45.68 oz or 1295 grams or 2.855 lbs on my kitchen scale
I am really thankful
Hmm I wonder, are there any fantasy books with a young adult protagonist from some backwater village, which from unforeseen circumstances is forced to leave their hometown and go on an adventure unaware of their true herigate and destiny 🤔
fewer than you think tbh
that is one of those phantom tropes that remains in the psyche
when was the last major fantasy book that played that trope straight?
I've 100% read that recently but it was certainly not a major book
I can think of quite a few examples, but not all entirely play it straight
and it is maybe by a gay smut author (although those specific aren't smutty... yet?)
There's nothing straight about this one
Ok some of them I have to ignore one of the parts, but they fit all the rest. Some of them fit entirely
No, okay the troupe is actually really straight forward in exactly what Teddy said, however it has some more twists to it
I can think of a more traditional one but it starts with the MCs being fully adult, though it still follows that troupe it's just not YA MC
I can think of a lot of books that have the trope but not any recent ones
Not from 2020 and up
Boy do I have the fun book with a blue dragon on it for you 🥴
I feel like dune arguably hits all those points except "backwater village"
Yeah, but as Teddy said I think modern stories try to subvert those troupes
Like they're still used but they're not so so formulaic maybe?
Yeah idk about modern
at this point I've hyped it enough that you're gonna be so disappointed
Way of Edan did it 😩 it wasn't super good
Oops, ended up finishing Rise of Kiyoshi. ||Jianzhu surely has the highest body count in the Avatar series right? Because dang, so much murder going on. I saw a Goodreads review that summarized the plot as "be gay, do crimes" and yeah, pretty much. Looking forward to getting the next one at the library if it's around.||
Would you say rise of kiyoshi is good? I’ve found most of the post series comics lackluster
I liked the Kyoshi novels
And would recommend them
I've read FC Yee's other series (the Genie Lo books) and I think he writes a teenage girl with the weight of the world on her shoulders well. I accidentally inhaled most of Rise today
I do think it being a novel gives it more weight than the comics- like we'd need to up the series rating if they animated Kiyoshi's backstory for trauma/violence
Rise of Kyoshi vague ||the climax could never have worked in any medium other than text imo||
The Yangchen books aren’t as good as the Kyoshi ones but I still like them quite a bit
Haven’t read the Roku stuff yet
Erha 295 ||The very first chapter of this volume, and we already have a dramatic thunder-and-lightning reveal of a bridge made from human corpses||
||Yep, I'm definitely reading Erha 🙂↕️ ||
Where else in the book would you put this?
it was less "it should be in a different spot" and more "yep, we're already starting this book at full sprint" 😅
Tomorrow I want to reorganise my bookshelves. Unfortunately this means I need to find new arrangements of books that are both aesthetically and logically pleasing...
I waited for years to start the Practical Guide to Evil because the author was working on doing the audiobook. And now that I have finished the audio version of book one I learn that they decided to rewrite ??? of the series, and there's no release date for book 2.
That's just mean.
I’m at 459 pages of Stronghold by Melanie Rawn. 100 pages to go!
why do I get the feeling will of the many is super overrated without even reading it?
Well it's highly rated and popular so it's probably more likely to be over than under
Well. I would say lotr is more likely to be overrated than under
If a lot of people really like it, it'd have to be really good to be underrated, while it'd just have to be a bit less than the hype to be over imo
The ratings of the many...
I would read them, but I guess they're audio only
26 years and counting, waiting for Captal's Tower
I got the other two books of that series.
Swordcrossed 11 ||i know there are plenty of other explanations, but I do love to headcanon that mattie's picking up dancing better than dueling purely because luca sucks at teaching||
That's probably not wrong
Dang I just looked, there isn‘t even an E-Book. So yeah
Time to finally start Six of Crows, I’ve heard lots of good things
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Erha 299 ||I did not expect Chu Wanning being pinocchio having like... plot relevance? Beyond the backstory, I mean||
||and beyond the author's ability to make an infinite number of tree and wood metaphors about him||
maybe i SHOULD wait on the nameless land given that there are at least two more books in the universe coming....
There are???
Nameless Land is... general about the ending (in case you want to know) ||conclusive enough in the main plot bits||
Oooh, you make me so happy
;)
tell me about ||the haunt........ does he come back||
||it's making me so anxious||
Answer ||he does come back||
Hehe, I won't tell you any more 😌 (unless you want full spoilers)
Do we have any info about the next books?
Nope
Only maniacs sort by color
I decided to be sensible and sort by genre
Hi
Sun Eater 1 early on ||Okay I get the profit margins thing, but every decent businessman knows that it's important to invest in their business, and keeping your machinery working and up to date is a major factor in efficiency and profit. His profit margins are going to plummet when all his equipment fails and his mines are panned out.||
||This whole family is stupid||
Binged A Closed and Common Orbit this weekend, have about sixty pages to go but really loving it- I think I like it more than A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet
I finished Stronghold! I had a bit of time to myself and got to cracking on reading it.
And question - is the Kate Elliott you guys are talking about, the same author who wrote Crown of Stars series?
Yes.
Why???
What happens when books ina series have different color covers?!
193, I'm definitely reaching 200 then
Oh man you got the OG Red Rising covers
Mine are all black except Iron Gold and Dark Age
Irom Gold and WoTM being in the center = peak bookshelf 🤭💕
I do too!
you did preemptively call him a maniac, you weren't wrong.
Unhinged
It looks better that way 😌
But at what cost
I am a simple person. I want my series and books by one author to be together
Does it? Having uniform editions of a book series even if they're different colors together is often more appealing
Size and shape are also relevant aspects
And like
"The spine is mostly red I guess" is also a different conversation than if you had custom dust jackets that made all the red books a uniform shade of red
(In which case you could organize them as you wanted anyway)
Yeah to me it looks like pleasing in passing but just the whole height difference accross books irks me a bit haha
by author last name and series, they do look like they go together
That said my library is just "where it fits" but it's very tiny and humble
like 1/20th of Atrus
haha, i was just talking yesterday about how my #wheel-of-time copies are an assortment of well-loved massmarket paperbacks, hardcovers for the later editions, a trade paperback with the Tor ebook cover, and various oddities
that being said, the Tor.com logo placement on the Tensorate novellas will always be my shelf pet peeve
Evil
I think my biggest shelf itch is the fact that all of my stormlights are mmpb and Itty bitty and then here comes WaT taking up half the shelf 😭
At least my mb era 1s are the same size, even if they dont match
I barely have any Sanderson and I've little interest in collecting the print versions for most of the books tbh
I really need to start looking into getting a slightly bigger shelf though
idk what I'll do with Folk of the Air when it gets here
The only ones I want to fix eventually is getting a better inheritance cycle set... Brisingr is a hardback, and Inheritance is missing pages 😂
And I just got a message today saying the book I ordered last week it's at the shop so that's 4 thicc books that need to go... somewhere
👀👀
This is mine so far! Its grown a bit since I last put it together
this took way longer than it should have
but I had a lot of randomly accumulated crap in front of it
oh the 2 books on the left most that aren't showing the spine are Starless Sea and Night Circus
(You can see my lone Brisingr hardcover there cosmic
, nope don't look for the rest, I don't have them)
This was mine back in January when I put it together. Some additions have been made since then and more need to be added + I probably need to tweak where some things are to make space for other stuff. Been avoiding that all lol
very neat
Thanks! Was really pleased with it when I got it all set up.
The placement of the Sanderson books was poorly considered though. It has since overflowed. Maybe I’ll redo stuff this weekend at some point
My Cosmere RPG books I think are just chilling in my office
As are a few other books I believe
Omg I havent seen Blood Lad in who knows how long 😂
me neither tbh
both of those collections of novels/manga have been built over perhaps 2 decades now, a bit more really
Awww rhars so cool!
I started with Inuyasha when i was like 10
I have a lot of books and need more bookshelves
Yeah but I don't have uniform editions lol. I have two MMP, one large paperback, and two hardcover of Stormlight. Most of my other series are the same way.
Having a random distribution of heights bothers me way less than putting Stormlight and Mistborn all together because the disparity in their heights drives me crazy.
Also organizing by color is my favorite way to do it and that's really the only thing that matters.
Your shelf is gorgeous
This was my shelf before I organized it by color and I just don't like it as much
Sometimes I can also taste the colors when I look at them (it's a little random) and having too many different ones close together is chaotic and overwhelming. Having all the similar colors next to each other helps me focus
It has to be you that likes it at the end of the day
Oh, I need to make my book tree
Yeah the difference in sizes doesn't bother me at all but having different colors near each other does
What's a book tree?
On the plus side I saw lots of Lopen pictures from when he first got adopted
It is a bit better if I make more of a pyramid shape because you can see all the spines at once
In theory I have a picture of that from one year
I do have hinges
They're just on the bottom of the door instead of the side
Works great for me and confuses the hell out of everyone else
My bookshelf
that's were most of mine is too
Since I'm at my parents I can also share actual bookshelves
Enjoy trying to figure out any sort of organization here because I sure can't
Children of Time 5.2 ||I’m not clear if Arvana has actually figured out that her “monkeys” are spiders yet. If she was of sound mind I think she’d be more okay with it, but she clearly isn’t||
I do also have this at my grandma's place, which isn'e quite exactly mine but since she passed we might as well consider it mine since no one else is taking these books
they are, mostly, classics
damn, wild
Just finished Mother of Learning. What a thrilling ride!
-# No, I finished my last reread in August! You will not pull me back in! casts mind shield
I’m thinking about this quote from Slaughterhouse Five again
||“And Lot's wife, of course, was told not to look back where all those people and their homes had been. But she did look back, and I love her for that, because it was so human. So she was turned into a pillar of salt. So it goes.”|| slaughterhouse five ch1
It’s so sad. So inevitable. Said so simply and yet so eloquently. So it goes.
||Also the fact that it’s an inversion. Orpheus failed to win back his bride because he looked back. The wife died because she disobeyed God’s commandment. But Billy loves them for failing because they were too human to believe and have faith||
Sun eater 1||Hadrien is really not smart||
This needs to be spoilered
||I would say it's less that he's not smart and more that he thinks he's way smarter than he is due to comparing himself to a lot of dumbs dumbs||
So far, ||He's impulsive, irrational, and way more arrogant than he thinks he is, and not nearly as smart as he thinks he is, as well. So many stupid things being done||
||yeah I mean he's book smart, he just doesn't have the life experience to apply his knowledge well||
||I'm questioning the book smart part||
how far are you?
Around chapter 54
||yeah I mean if you're referring to his interactions with Valka she's obviously more knowledgeable than him he's basically like a "gifted kid" straight out of high school trying to converse with a PhD or something||
||His language skills are well above average though he knows way more on that front than people of his caste typically do||
Even just in general. Sun Eater up to ch 54 ||He doesn't really seem to have all that much knowledge or information. He knows a few extra languages but that's really not that impressive to me. I know 2.5 languages, hubby knew 3, at that age||
||I mean he knows like 6 including dead ones and an alien language basically no one can speak. He's not really supposed to be like a super genius anyway, he's just a 20 year old who had a good tutor||
||It's less someone in the 2000's who can speak Spanish, English and French and more someone in like 18th century England who can speak Arabic, Latin, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese||
||He says he knows 5 fluently, and one of them really didn't count||
||remind me on the "one didn't count"||
||The lord count patted her arm reassuringly. “I’ve nothing to fear from Lord Marlowe here. Not in the thirty seconds this will take you.” He pushed her gently toward the doors through which his husband had arrived. “Go on.” When she’d moved away, Balian Mataro asked, “You speak how many languages, Lord Marlowe? Four? Five?”||
||“Nearly eight, lordship,” I replied, not seeing the relevance when we’d been talking starships. “Though perhaps five fluently.” A slight exaggeration—my Durantine was good enough to fool poor kitchen servants, but I was hardly prepared to have tea with one of the consuls of that far republic.||
oh yeah
||I don't think that one is super relevant due to just like the location of who speaks it||
||The usefulness of his linguistic capablities is kind of a RAFO thing tbh||
||I'm just waiting for the plot to really get started right now lol||
||This is the least plot heavy book but what it does have should kick off in the next half dozen chapters I think||
My biggest gripe with book 1 and 2 (though a lot of people disagree on 2 and just fully love the whole thing) is pacing
||I also have words and thoughts about his carelessness with the 20k credit card||
||oh I forgot about that lmao||
||But like, why introduce it and spend time on it when he loses it literally right away||
||Personally I think I would have put it on a smaller card, and swallowed it||
||They can go fishing in my intestines if they want it||
||That might have been an issue with fugue? I have to assume they purge your stomach but I can't recall if that's mentioned||
||regardless I think that's an intentionally stupid fumble on his part that whole section is classic rich kid getting into the big wide world for the first time and immediately getting swindled||
Not that I recall
||I don't think you do but that may just be an oversight because there's no logical way that they drain out all your blood but you can just have a full stomach||
||They don't drain out the blood, they freeze you||
||I'm pretty sure the blood draining is part of the process but maybe they haven't mentioned that yet||
||The physician pushed air through his yellow teeth. “As you wish, then.” And without preamble he slapped a sensor tape to my chest, then another. A third. He barely looked at me as he did so, then pulled a self-sterilizing needle from a slot inside the crèche beside me. It hissed as it pierced my arm, and he fastened the securing strap about my biceps. “’Tis going to get cold rather fast.”||
||It already had. The freeze crept from the needle site in my arm, the blood transmuting, cells hardening without tearing. ||
||I'm pretty sure that's what "the blood transmuting" is, they filter all the blood out akin to dialysis and replace it with a placeholder while in fugue||
I don't know how to explain the main explanation of this that I'm thinking of without spoiling
I'll keep reading but ||the description really doesn't work with draining all the blood|| I guess I'll see
||Anyway, no mention of purging the stomach||
||tbf the example you're pulling from is somewhat not emblematic of the typical process because it's a bunch of sketchy thieves doing it with the intention of screwing over and dumping the guy in question||
this could also just be an early book weirdness thing
||From what I can tell, they didn't dump him. They abandoned ship, which is not indicative of doing something for profit, since the ship is the really expensive part||
||I think it's left ambiguous||
||My memory of the book 1 stuff is kind of iffy though ||
||The first thing he did when he woke up was puke, so no stomach purging||
Empire of Silence||I mean technically he's puking up the fluid they're suspended in not actual vomit but regardless the stomach thing is not something ever specifically addressed, more just an assumption because it would seem weird to me since you have to not eat stuff before undergoing temporary anesthesia that it wouldn't affect this process at all||
||I also think the blood draining thing I was thinking of is at the end of the process, they freeze your blood and then do some sort of dialysis like process when they thaw you. I know something about the process requires extra or synthetic blood to be available for reasons that I can't go into specifics on||
Sun Eater 1
||It definitely says that his ship was scrapped||
||“Ship was empty when it came in-system,” Gila said. “Crew bugged out, took the shuttles and ran, left your sorry ass in the freeze.”||
||I looked out over the tarmac where I’d once broken a man’s arm to the low line of hangars opposite. There was the one where the Eurynasir had been all those years ago.||
||I meant why the ship is abandoned is ambiguous||
Sun Eater 1 ||Sure, but they certainly wouldn't have done it for frivolous reasons because the ship is the really expensive thing. So they weren't planning on it, most likely. So they wouldn't have done a half assed job on putting him into fugue||
Empire of Silence||idk between poor memory on my part and lack of him ever figuring out what their deal was I don't really know what's up with that whole segment lol||
These need labels
It's been the same tag the whole time
Had to scroll way up to see what these spoilers are of
Seems at some point the spoiler scope changed
Nope, I haven't read any further so it's been the same the whole time
Unless Sun Eater ch 54 and Empire of Silence is the same thing
Sun Eater is the series name, book 1 is Empire of Silence
it's saying "book 1" vs "title of book 1"
So Sun Eater book 1 chapter 54 is the same as Empire of Silence chapter 54
Sun eater 1 ch 60 ||oh for heaven's sake, really?||
Sun Eater 1 and also The Flash tv show ||He's as bad at keeping his identity secret as Barry is||
hilarious comparison
True tho
||Wait till you get to book 5 and all the side characters are like "no Hadrian, WE are the Sun Eater"||
(this is not a real spoiler to be clear lmao)
I don't really care about spoilers anyway
Sun Eater 1 ||It's sort of funny that Umandh is basically "human" when they're not lol||
Sun Eater 1 ||"I'm not a child!" Oh man...||
||very much a "You're not my mother!" moment||
||It is starting to get more interesting though. What's going on with that vision, I wonder||
So far, I Am Not A Serial Killer is kind of interesting. I like Dan's writing style.
@snow vessel of the ones you were talking about are there any that you would recommend?
I mean I'd recommend both wot and malazan. I've finished all but the prequel of wot and enjoyed it, and while im only 6 books into malazan I'm enjoying that as well
alright thank you, thats good to know!
While I've not personally had too much trouble, it is worth knowing that malazan is quite a lot sometimes
Big series, big books, big cast/world, and also a lot of gruesome? content
Wot is also long with lots of characters, but has less of the rest I'd say
And has a narrower, clearer focus cast
But I think both are worth it!
Strange how that happens...
You went into a bookshop, yes.
They also had this which is gorgeous (i didnt buy)
Tempted to turn around and go buy this 😩
Swordcrossed 11 ||man, two seconds and Maya totally figured out what's going on||
That's Wuthering Highs
-# I can't help but feel like the (Cheshire cat?) face on your arm is staring at me
Ooh, I've been meaning to read that
Before the movie comes out
It is
Is that live action????
I think?
Ive only seen the 2d animated one, so the extra detail/realism caught me off guard xD
Yes, that's from the Johnny Depp version.
I thought it was fun
Pretty book
so pretty
I bought Through the Looking Glass from the same collection cause... I couldn't help myself 😔
I have found out they have a special edition of my favourite poet, too
and now I want to go back and buy that too
Even though I already have this
😩
it's so cute though
in the back the tree has been cut, and only the trunk and the blood remains
very fitting
Yep
My favourite is Romance de la luna, luna
I can't find my anthology though, I'll be pissed if I've lost it
Is he the Spanish poet killed by the fascists?
one of them, yeah
well, a lot of them run away but yeah
There's a statue near where I used to live of him releasing a dove
That sounds sweet
Mhm
You know the typical "what do you think the author meant when they said the mug is red" kinda BS?
In his case and many of his peers, they were hiding ideological messages during the civil war
You have no idea how little that narrows it down. But yeah one of the most famous.
I think he was the most influential of Generación del 27
Fascists only liked one poet and it’s Ezra Pound
Sadly Spanish poetry and literature is not typically part of an American education. It probably would’ve made me more interested in Spanish class if it had been. Poetry > See Spot Run type sentences
