||this lestat vibe feels very in line with like... book 3-4 lestat imo. The big crazy bombastic breakdown energy||
IWTV s1-2/s3 promo/TVC books 1-4 + speculation ||I do wonder what the plan is with raglan/totbt, given how much set up we've had for raglan and how little for David Talbot. I also wonder what armand's up to this season. I expect maybe moving devil's minion forward from TQOTD? I'm hesitantly excited, because he's my favourite character but I'm not totally sure where we're headed, especially given he seems to have already turned daniel||
-# maybe this should go in #1364954411582885899 but I think there's slightly more Interview fans here than there
[Green Bone Saga] My worry is ||that they are clearly setup as not likable people taking probably bad decisions, but I'm not convinced the books are going to give them an appropriate set of consequences for that. Which is putting me off.||
I get a moment of deja vu every time this gif is posted lol
I tend to do my Happy Eevee Dance a lot (especially any time SoTF is mentioned) šāØļø
@orchid obsidian sorry for the ping but I think you've read a bunch more than me from Leigh Bardugo, have you read the Alex Stern series? And if so how is it? š
feel like i haven't read many new fantasy series in a while, any 2020s fantasy series recommendations from folks here?
what other series do you like?
I haven't read it I'm afraid š I'm a Grishaverse girlie only in terms of Bardugo, I haven't branched out yet
the usual mainstream stuff - cosmere, kingkiller, dresden files, 5th season, scott lynch, brent weeks. recently ready Will of Many, was pleasantly surprised. Can't wait for hte sequel.
My #1 favorite series is the Greenbone Saga but idk if that counts as 2020s since only the last book is
the date's just a guideline, i'm just looking for newer books. i'll check it out
The Sun Eater series has been taking off. I personally didn't like it as much but it has been gaining a lot of traction and the reading experience as far as prose/perspective felt similar to Will of the Many
Rob H. Bedford, in a review for SFF World compared the first entry Empire of Silence to Herbert's Dune, Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun and Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind.
Well that's some heavy praise
yeah when I say I didn't like it, it was more like a "I can see the appeal and it's well written but it's just not for me" kind of not like, rather than having any big problems with it
yeah, i'll say also Red Rising and books by Joe Abercrombie are popular with the same crowd, at the same time as they're not to my taste, but i might suggest looking them up
oh ya i've read a bunch of abercrombie works. i've read 3 of the first red rising books. i'll probably reread them from the first one this winter
The Devils which was released this year by Abercrombie is quite different than his previous stuff and really fun so I do recommend checking that out. Imma go ahead and recommend Tainted Cup it isn't traditional fantasy but it's really well written.
oh yeah I would highly recommend Robert Jackson Bennett's stuff for sure
I do have Sun Eater on my tbr but my tbr works in mysterious ways so...
Oh, Usha. Depending on how I feel about Jade Legacy in a couple of hours time, I might start Evocation.
š
Oh sweet, didn't know about Devils. Definitely going on my list. Thanks
I was going to message you earlier but I forgot then I forgot what I was going to say so I didn't
I just remembered that, though I still don't remember about what
This piece of knowledge has enriched my evening.
I look forward to you remembering the other piece of information as well. :P
Don't hold your breath
I won't.
WotM 1 ||What's up with these Sappers? They're terrifying. I'm also getting Roman vibes from this book.||
and so it begins
the readalong of the many
The whole book is floating around in my head
I read it too fast yesterday
And stayed up way too late
I read the whole thing in two days (minus twenty pages)
So I pulled an @tight kindle today because it was bookshop day and Waterstones was offering double the amount of stamps for the loyalty card. I bought the new edition of The Dragon Republic. (To be fair, I did not own any of the Poppy War books, I read them with the library)
Library lacks the rest of Terra Ignota
I got the next Dresden Files book to work on
Guys, the shipping of books with amazon is more than the books I want to buy
books are heavy
But 27 dollars heavy, I dont think so
I'm glad my name is synonomous in your head with impulse-buying books
Am I wrong?
Nope
I was very good and left the bookstore with only 4 books yesterday. I only had to buy three of them and one of them was preordered last month.
Memnoch the devil 4 ||so this book is about... lestat saving a church?? XD||
Red rising all ||After finishing Morning Star i do think the seris should have ended here||
RR series all ||I find pierce's reasoning for continuing the series quite interesting. IIRC he's said that the end of MS felt too easy, too clean. He felt like it wouldn't be that simple and wanted to explore that||
It looks like Persepolis Rising is what breaks my streak
I have to return it to the library now and never really got past the setup.
Feels a tiny bit contrived
I'll come back to it eventually.
RR saga all ||And he's right imo. I like to think of it in my own country's terms, where after the slaves were freed there was a very messy period of Reconstruction. With that in mind, I think its very realistic from the public being unsatisfied, to sabotage from outside forces who want to perpetuate slavery. That and Lyria and Mustangs povs are so so so so so so soooooo good, especially mustangs š||
Iām at part 3 of The Fork, The Witch, and the Worm. I think Iāll continue reading for a while longer.
Exordia is so good
Seth Dickinson just do banger after banger after banger
Iām going to read all of his (non franchise/tie-in) novels for the rest of my life
Would you guys be inclined to regard Voldemort as a 'tragic villain'? I personally wouldn't, but maybe it's just me.
No
harry potter ||I think he's a textbook case of unambiguously evil villain who had a shoehorned tragic backstory which fails to justify the fact that he becomes magic hitler||
for a villain to be a tragic villain I think they need to have some sort of regret. Like they resent the evil they're doing but feel they have to anyway. Or maybe they're making up for some mistake in the past.
Voldemort feels "generic evil"
Most do have a tragic/painful past but we don't qualify them into tragic villain
Hummel from The Rock for example
Magneto often fills that role too
I mean Vader for sure. I read this in the introduction to the new edition of the novelization (I didn't actually buy it) but Stover pitched his version of ROTS as a Greek Tragedy. Or well that was his plan before Lucas told him to just make it good and he had no need to pitch it that way.
Awesome movie
HP all ||I guess technically you can say he's a tragic villain, in that his downfall was caused by a fine blend of hubris and prophecies, but it really feels like a case of trying to cram the step-sister's foot into the glass slipper.||
HP all ||The big important thing being typically your tragic villain's flaw plays a role in their downfall from something of a hero into a villain, and that's kinda entirely missing from Voldy's story (unless you're a wizard fascist)||
What about ||Wormtail|| and ||Snape||?
Assuming one considers the latter a villain
Which in the books at least I probably would
They're missing the tragic part IMO, in literary analysis tragic doesn't just mean sad.
HP all ||If anything, Snape is like anti-tragic, in that it's his "heroic virtue" that leads to his demise.||
Tragic is basically "They're a great guy, but..." (with direct consequences in the story), and "he's an all-around awful guy" isn't really a valid but there
I also wouldn't say Snape is a villain, as pretty much every plot-significant thing he does in the story is in some way helping the protagonists
he's just mean about it
Duh, Nicholas Cage is in it
reading a Pratchett book. after years of reading mostly Sanderson, it is refreshing to have to look up words again
||Ok ya starting Iron gold i agree||
||She is so goooood||
RR saga all ||And to think IG is easily the weakest of the 3 newer ones, she in particular gets soooooooo much better its insane||
Irongold reread early ||I do not think I can say my thoughts on Lysander without extreme cursing||
Memnoch the Devil ch5 ||i wonder if the average man lestat saw was God, if this granite figure is the devil||
Piranesi was a really interesting quick read
And Iām enjoying The Troop quite a lot so far, having just finished part 1 last night. I donāt think a book has ever made me scrunch my face up in disgust like this one has, which I think is a solid indicator that itās doing its job well
I just finished The Fork, The Witch, and The Worm. And it was an interesting read, with its short stories having that connection to each other in its own way.
It was fun
Heinlein was such a libertarian š
It was a refreshing visit to Alagaesia after such a long break yeah
Have you read/are you planning to read Murtagh?
For a second I thought you were implying Heinlein wrote the Fork the Witch and the Worm
I havenāt read the book but I am confident there isnāt enough chauvinism in the book for that to be possible
Beginning Exordia now, I'm pretty hyped. š
Finished Skyward
Very YA but had its moments
Gonna start the audiobook for this book that is apparently like kinda good???
Heat 3 up next?
I was all about HE4T
@viral fractal
He should just admit it
he needs to admit it to himself before he can say it to his fans
he's still in denial, still believes he can do it, that God will shine on him and he'll finally find whatever it is he needs to finish the book and the series or something
Kind of crazy to live in a world where literally millions of a man's contemporaries know a thing about him better than he appears to know it about himself
(I don't know what his faith is but finishing the books now would require some sort of divine intervention, unless he's secretly had them done for years and is lying about it)
(which I don't think he is)
he's devoutly not religious iirc
it took me about a decade to realize i'd given up on my big wip.... i imagine there's a lot of his age playing into this
he's gone on rants against religion before
my one fanfic of 100k words is NOT my life's work and mentioned in the same breath as my name
at that age it's like... facing down that there are things you realize you might never get to do
Alternatively heās already finished it, is lying about it, and theyāll be out posthumously
I think itās a mix of factors
Itās that or super deep denial
But yeah I wish his editor would sit down and have a talk with him
I have an exceptionally hard time believing his publisher would play along with this
He pays their bills
I'm sure they talk, but like, George has heard it all before. It disheartens him, but he is far too stubborn to accept help finishing the series
He still has a dream of a Dream of Spring
Insane that since adwd came out I have finished middle school, high school, my undergrad and my masters
So thereās that
I could see some Stephen King-esque near death experience shocking him into motion on it but he's old enough that near-death experience is less likely than just death
he's old enough that he could get the miracle and still fail, tbh
@long sorrel Thursday! In theory.
A Marvellous Light is the one I plan on reading first
what? Is this your immediate tbr or?
i'm a bit confused about what happens on Thursday
yes
Heat 3 will take place in N'awlins

Oh god no they're replacing me
heat 2 doesn't do silksong skips like you do don't worry.
That was the order date, not the delivery date.
I'm getting a book delivery on Thursday, and one of the books in question is A Marvellous Light
Which I intend to start reading as soon as I get it
Oh atrus if you havent read it yet I do think TSoA is right up your alley
I saw it on the list š
Yes I've heard really good things about it!
Also I just read the sample chapter of The Strenth of the Few and AGGGGGGGGH
I want the book
Right now
less than a month now
I'm probably going to preorder it next week when it's in the budget
Thriftbooks doesn't charge shipping
I should read the book after Marvelous Light
(then i can let you know if you want to read or if it's skippable for you)
oh @low hill which book was it in the end?
My whole order consists of The Song of Achilles, A Marvellous Light, Red White and Royal Blue, and the Earth Girl series (Earth Girl, Earth Star, Earth Flight)
But it's in two different shipments for whatever random reason
(Cosmic I think I've recced Earth Girl to you before but I still think you'd like it)
If it wasn't you, it was someone else because I have been told about it!
I remember it having some crashing out but I don't know that any of the characters could be classified as crashouts? Except maybe the MC? (who is a girl)
But the book contains energy that I get from you
I genuinely don't know why I love them so much because they're just random sci-fi books I found one day but they remain one of my favorite sci-fi series (serieses?) to date
I think it would be really funny if it ended up my favorite too
I mean it's not beating Red Rising for you I know that for sure
Yeah I love scifi like red rising (brutal toppling of the oppressive regime) and Earth Girl (very joy, many whimsy)
Exactly!! š¤£
Earth Girl also includes positive societal change towards minorities without bloodshed which I enjoyed a lot
Well, one minority
Tbf that's better than zero š
What is it about?
I am persevering with Jade Legacy.
gotcha
Earth Girl premise ||So it's the twenty-seventh century and humans have invented portal technology that has totally replaced all other forms of transportationa and has also allowed them to teleport to other planets. They've spread out to literally thousands of other worlds. They've also eliminated all disabilites except for one. 0.1% of people can only survive on Earth and when they're born they have to be immediately portaled there or they will die. They are known as the Handicapped and they're looked down on (they're viewed to have lower intelligence and called apes and throwbacks). A lot of Handicapped people are orphans because their parents ditch them as soon as they're born.
When the first planets were opened for exploration Earth's population dwindled so quickly that everything fell apart, and they lost a massive amount of their history and technology. So Earth archaeologists are a big deal.
The MC is Jarra, who has been stuck on Earth for her whole life and HATES off-worlders (girl needs serious therapy but was also psychologically experimented on because Handicapped people are viewed as less than human legally and don't have as many rights). She plans on infiltrating an off-world college's archaeology program in order to prove to them that they are normal people and then scream obscenities at them and walk away.||
The worldbuilding is my favorite part. It's really complex and has a lot of depth
And I found the character work to be really satisfying as well
Just finished Part One of Roadwork by Richard Bachman (Stephen King)
||The inner monologues can be a bit confusing at times but other than that it's been good so far. It's my second Bachman book (Rage was my first) so here's hoping the other parts can keep building up the story and have a good ending (which can be a bit rare for Stephen King). I've been loving how we get into the head of the MC so hopefully I love the rest!||
Oh. Ohhhh oh ohhhhh BOY this sounds great
Man the narrator has a voice of gravel that absolutely nails the tone of the movies
Just hearing the narrator say the āready to rock and roll at the drop of a hatā line and of course the titular Heat line makes me wanna watch the movie again
It is!
Wait what? I literally ordered something last night that had 1.99 shipping. Not a big deal but Iām curious how youāre getting free shipping.
Oh weird
Ohhh you get free shipping on orders over $15
Which is not a lot for a book order
Oh gotcha yeah I just got one book for cheap. Didnāt know that, thats a solid deal
And even then $2 of shipping is way less than anywhere else offers.
I like this website
Getting my copy of Absolute Wonder Woman v1 tomorrow
Very excited as witch raised in hell Diana is very sexy
I bought a copy of Absolute Batman vol1 the other day
Nice
-# is this my sign to get absolute superman
AWWv1 was sold out so the local comic book shop thoughtfully ordered it for me and a number of others
Also my local comic book shop is so cool. They had a booth at Pride, in a Deep South state
Now this is a metaphor (From Exordia)
Absolute superman feels very... he feels like he'd fit in with RR/Wotm ||darrow & vis||, imo.
HAVE YOU READ IT
Big muscled sword lady with Scythian tattoos and magic
Oh... oh its going to do irreversible damage to my brain isnt it
He's very
Its way worse than this
Just a few chapters in to Exordia but so far this is š„ . I'm hooked.
I am definitely detecting the buttery flavor of Destiny in here tho (which to me, is a good thing).
And I think I'm well-read enough in sci fi to not be doing the Boss Baby meme when I say that.
WotM 3 ||Uh... I think Vis got a little carried away. He wasn't supposed to win that. No one expected him to win that. Including me.||
This was the chapter where I was like "oh yes. This is my kinda book" š
I've been relistening to WotM in the lead up to SotF and (WotM all) ||is it just me, or is Vis written much older before the adoption?||
WOTM ||you mean like he acts older in that portion of the book than in the rest of the book? I personally just got the sense that this was the kind of book where the main character is hyper competent for his age and that's just the buy-in, but I didn't feel like that went down in the story.||
||I think the school setting allows him to have more teenager-y immature behaviours towards others. Whether this is intentional, which makes sense given he was more on a "survival mode" before the adoption than after, or not, I cannot tell, the guy isn't deep enough for me to guess||
I have misplaced my book.
Where in the world did I put it
Under one of the cats?
On the shelf? In the return slot for the public library? On your nightstand? Atop the laundry machine? In the laundry machine (š)?
WotM ||Why, exactly? Because of the fighting dirty?||
WoTM 3 ||No, because that was the first chapter Vis showed his true crashout colors š„° he is very angy and I love my son
||
||I'm just worried how it will affect him after that. This gives me "inciting incident" vibes. Not saying it wasn't a valid crashout, I'm just worried for him now.||
I am gonna smile and tell you to keep reading š„“
Inside my laundry is nightmare fuel š
Thankfully it was in my bag
Without any context, I might have thought "Inside My Laundry" was a horror book.
I'd believe it.
Anything about laundry is horror related
Reminds me of The Laundry Files series which has basically nothing to do with laundry.
But is horror.
Indeed.
Laundry is the best chore because you put the dirty things and they come out clean then you dry it then you fold it and put it away while listening to shardcast and go about your day between each step
You mean while watching Doctor Who
Shardcast is too long to get through unless you have an industrial quantity of laundry...
You could say the same about any chore, but laundry sucks
Reminds me I never put away the last load of laundry
I need to fold laundry
I need to start laundry but I've been sick so it's worse š
I've a little hill of it
Iāve been effectively living out of my suitcase for a while now due to the back and forth between my place and my gfās place, and everything ends up being a mess when I go to find clothes so I have devolved into just stuffing my clean laundry in my suitcase.
Going back to living in one place once we move in together is going to be glorious
That sounds kinda miserable
Obviously the net is positive but the clothe situation is
-# This is #1404497733108236318.
I need to find time to listen to more of The Troop tonight. The book is great but Iāve found itās not a very fun listen when eating lol
I read more books when I have to do laundry
so I think this is quite on topic
š
Do you read them instead of doing laundry? :P
Correct!
at a brief glance I thought this stemmed from laundry files or something- haven't read them, but I think I did read a short story in that world on the reactor site at some point
Computer science summons Eldritch horrors with some dark humor thrown on top. Probably not a premise for everyone but I enjoy them.
Every so often I go back and read the blurb for Apparently, Sir Cameron Needs to Die and I get excited for it all over again
same
Iāve been following the author on tumblr for years. Iām sure the book will be very funny
Left review on āThe Moon is a Harsh Mistressā: I get it, Robert, youāre a libertarian. Enough already!ā
That said, this is my favorite of Heinlein novel so far. I like the formatting of it as a fake memoir, as it really works, especially with the strong character voice of the memoirist. Andaside from the beginning it has the least paternalistic (or outright!!!!!) misogyny of any book Iāve encountered
yeaaaah
I keep forgetting about it
and then i remember again
or if not one of you two does
and so it's a constant cycle
Iām listening to āWith the Lightningsā which is supposed to (by the authorās own words) be Aubrey/Maturin in space, and this narrator is just so much less⦠energetic than the one I listened to narrate Aubrey/Maturin that itās hard for me to consider them related
heehee
Laundry files? Iāve been thinking of reading them for a while š
Yes, you should give them a shot if you are interested.
Its very good
Probably life changing for you in a manner that may make this channel unreadable
We shall see

AWWv1 || Kelly Thompson thinking to herself: how will I describe the chimera? Hmm. I know. Big buff tiger lady with snake tail and goat horns
Mattia de Iulius: genius. Check out my sketch of it
DC editorial: perfect put it in the comic ||
Third arc, third artist and style. Sketchy chibi/ Tiny Titans this time
Ok Iāve finished it
THAT WAS SO GOOD
I NEED THE REST SO BAD
DC SHOULD LET KELLY THOMPSON DO WHATEVER SHE WANTS FOREVER
Told you
I never doubted it
This is likely to displace No Manās Land as my favorite comic arc
Iām going to withhold full judgment until itās complete but damn I didnāt know they still made 10/10 comics these days
Oh codenames its so joyous to see you obsessed with this š
Itās a good comic
That never happens
Whereās the catch
Whereās the part where it sucks and have to go, well this is technically an art form for children
So butchers masquerade is reaching its climax. And Iām freaking out. Sanderlanche levels of stress in a way I have not felt out of my admittedly minuscule experience in the LITRPG genre. But the times Iāve felt it have been while reading DCC
Thereās just something in these books that Iām missing from he who fights with monsters
I really enjoy HWFWM but idk. Itās missing something
It was really hard not to give up on HWFWM after the books 4-6 arc Iām ngl. lol
I quit after book 4
But, I just downloaded book 7 which Iāve been told will heal the wounds of the last 3 books. But also I will not be returning to that series until I finish the current Carl books
I had a friend who was instilling me with trust that the slog is worth it
Lmao there I am using WOT terms
To be fair, wind and truth was cheaper than a therapist
And Iām hella broke
This is a potshot at Infinite Jest, using Gravityās Rainbow
But yeah also Wind and Truth
And unlike fascists I donāt make my emotional problems the worlds problems
Have fascists tried stew idk
I doubt it
Too much intermingling I think
in my opinion, DCC is different from most LitRPGs in that it's a cohesive story. Books have beginning, middle, and end, characters have arcs and so on. LitRPGs like HWFWM that started as web serials lack that by virtue of being written one chapter at a time.
Oh god I didnāt piece it together till you said it
HWFWM is like homestuck
Iāll try and forgive it
I also find that, while Carl and Jason have some similarities. Carl is just way more likable to read
Jason just becomes really powerfully unlikable in books 4-6
And the major problem is that almost no one else is likable enough to stick around for
I only replied to half of this my apologies, you hit the nail on the head
I've read a ton of LitRPGs. I find them fun from time to time, just like I enjoy isekai novels from time to time. They're my popcorn reads. In part, because they read less like books and more like transcribed novelisations of DND campaigns
Every Carl book is super satisfying because every Carl book has a point to make in the narrative
Sometimes HWFWM, like in books 4-6 itās like
Why am I reading 3 books of set dressing
Itās like watching a YouTube video of a concrete slab foundation being poured
Except sometimes it references 80s media that the protagonist probably shouldnāt be old enough to reference
Idk Iāve never been to Australia maybe itās just like that
another thing DCC does that no other LitRPG I've read did is how integrated the RPG element is into the narrative and how it contributes to it.
DCC post book 1 general ||it reinforces the show business aspect. how the rest of the universe looks at the dungeon as a game and a tv show. it has to communicate the status of players to the viewers, to make them feel like their spending of money on the prize boxes affects the player's success or failure chances, to make them spend even more money on the next box and so on ||
So the wrong book order showed up today
I got the ones I wanted more so I'm not complaining
However
They're ex-library books
So I've been getting the plastic off with as little damage to the books themselves as possible
The other two should be here in a day or two
A Marvellous Light and The Song of Achilles are both m/m romance and Earth Girl and Earth Flight are books 1 and 3 of a scifi series I really enjoy
Huh. Nice
Book 2 and a copy of Red White and Royal Blue are in the other shipment
Cool, not literature related but I got my shipment confirmation about my cosmere RPG stuff. Which was very exciting
A Marvellous Light 2 ||The Bridgerton vibes are off the charts and honestly I'm here for it. The magic is also awesome.||
||He's taking this rather well, all things considered.||
I just started the Farseer Trilogy
I remember getting Earth Girl recommended to my by someone years ago. I don't remember who. But when I first searched for it on Libby, it was unavailable. Looks like it is now. I guess that's going on my TBR list.
The Ebook version of Sigraās Roost is coming out on the 18th? LETS GOOO!

At least that will coincide with Oath of the Wolf

Also guys I'm having emotions over something š
There's this incredibly nostalgic book series that I love and it went out of print a long time ago and I just went and looked on Thriftbooks and they're all there and I can get all four for $33 USD in hardcover and the thing is they literally have one left of two of them
But I just bought six books
But on the other hand it's in the budget
And I'm experiencing emotions over this situation
Sounds to me like you should get them if it's in your budget.
Oh. Then I didnāt see that big bookshelf. IM SO SORRY! You need a hug.
Oh my! That is impressive.
Glen Cook's Black Company is on sale in Humble Bundle this week
I know organizing by color is my favorite way to organize books
Finding what you're looking for is an absolute pain but it's so pretty
Iām on a hunt for some out of print books. And if you found them within your budget. GO GET IT! This is your opportunity!
Also my roommate wants a copy of House of Leaves so I can add that to the order and feel better about it
š
(and then I will steal it from him to read at some point because it is a fascinating looking book)

I wouldnt consider listening to your heart a problem šāØļø

No, I think that was a good decision.
Eleven books in eight days though š

Then buy them. Trust me, I'm a doctor.

The Godfather meets The Magicians in the sweeping adult debut from #1 New York Times bestselling author Marie Lu. Perfect for fans of V.E. Schwab, Red City is a dark and deadly contemporary fantasy of magical warfare, star-crossed ambition, and the pursuit of perfection at any cost, set in a glittering alternate Los Angeles.

||Alchemy is the hidden art of transformation. An exclusive power wielded by crime syndicates that market it to the worldās elites in the form of sand, a drug that enhances those who take it into a more perfect version of themselves: more beautiful, more charismatic, simply more.
Among the gleaming skyscrapers and rolling foothills of Angel City, alchemy is controlled by two rival syndicates. For years, Grand Central and Lumines have been balanced on a razorās edge between polite negotiation and outright violence. But when two childhood friends step into that delicate equation, the cityāand the paths of their livesāwill be irrevocably transformed.
The daughter of a poor single mother, Sam would do anything to claw her way into the ranks of Grand Central in search of a better life. Plucked away from his family as a boy to become a Lumines apprentice, Ari is one of the syndicates' brightest rising stars. Once, they might have loved each other. But as the two alchemists face off across opposite sides of an ever-escalating conflict, ambition becomes power, loyalty becomes lies, and no transformation may be perfect enough for them both to survive the coming war.||

I was reading reviews for a book i was hesitant about and the top 5star was talking about how AMAZING the book was and how skilled the audiobook narrator was, then proceeded to say āi may be biased because im the authorās sonā

that's kinda cute though

If you have read the series and are just really rusty, it should be fine imo
Iāve been kinda curious how paolinis style has evolved
The stuff that matters in the book, he either explains what you needed from the previous books or introduces it there
Maybe one of these days Iāll reread the series.
But the looming monolith of how little I liked the last book keeps me away
I recommend dynamite
Like the substance?
I think To Sleep in a Sea of Stars does a better job as far as craft and telling a stronger story, but if you want familiar, Murtagh reads like the older books but with much better craft.
Hm word
I am mixed on whether I recommend it though lol
Thanks sudowoodo

Anyone has recommendations for the unreliable narrator trope?
I mean I have to say Book of the New Sun.
But of course that is not a series you approach normally.
How do I approach such a series
With a dictionary
And also knowing itās going to require quite a bit of mental effort and energy.
Maybe Name of the Wind, we'll find out if Doors of Stone ever happens
fairly popular here
best of contemporary sci-fi imo (caveat: I have not read adrian tchaikovsky or a bunch of other things yet)
also a rare solid adaptation (the co-authors were heavily involved in that, though)
also a series I listened to entirely on audiobook because Jefferson Mays is an excellent narrator (not to be confused with DCC's Jeff Hays who is good in a different way)
I read the first book, imo it didnāt know what genre it wanted to be, very tonally dissonant
Yeah I got tonal whiplash from it but it evened out in the second book
I just loaned out three of my favorite books (Somewhere Beyond the Sea, Under the Whispering Door, and The Starless Sea) to someone I met forty five minutes ago
my best friend still has my hardcover bartimaeus books
hows neuromancer
Genre hopping is an intentional choice the series makes, each book (or sometimes group of books) picks up a different secondary genre
If that bothers you absolutely not the series for you
Only really starting in the second season, for what its worth. They were on set for much of the first season but they made a point of being very hands off and learning about how TV worked generally and how the studio making the show worked in specific
And the first season made a lot of very good choices with respect to adaptation
Yup this is one of The Expanse's core shticks.
The co-authors were so heavily involved that they just became friends with the cast and the actors influenced how they thought about the characters later in the book series.
and also the authors were able to wrap their heads around tv writing and how it would be different
there were LOTS of changes from the books and it was interesting to read some BTS stuff about how they were extremely NOT precious about keeping things "the same as the books"
Yeah, at least from the episodes of Ty and That Guy I've watched re: behind the scenes, they really liked their show runner and how he did things
ngl actually reading the books, this didn't feel like it was the case at all
i expected it to be much more the case than it was
Camina Drummer absorbs a bunch of book side character plots in the show
Been a while since I read it but it's definitely a classic
it feels like the expanse settles into what an Expanse Book is and then changes setting and some plot stuff
I feel like they were the most heavy-handed with it in the first and fourth books and final trilogy, but I was definitely cognizant of it reading it initially before they specifically said that was a thing they were doing
Naren Shankar is a baller. I kinda wonder what he's up to now.
It certainly helps I think that Ty had some Hollywood connections prior to the Expanse project starting, and that both Ty and Dan went in knowing very well the stereotypes about authors being involved in movie/TV projects among professionals in that field
(Those stereotypes are mostly Stephen King's fault)
YA romantasy author ordering breakfast: yeah could i get A Scone of Jam and Butter
The Expanse is basically why I know I wouldnāt enjoy a live action Stormlight adaptation, because they did everything about as right as you possibly could, a lot of people loved it, and I still didnāt
I liked season 3 but that might have just been because I didnāt like book 3
I liked the expanse adaptation minus season 5 and 6
Actually didn't even finish 6
it was so š¤ for me

My Libby holds have gotten out of hand
I'm like 120p in or so
Iām at 44 holds, maxed out across several libraries
Uh oh
Plus nine loans (mostly audiobooks so I will be able to read them before they lapse)
This is functionally my tbr list, along with a handful of physical books I own
Just do nothing but read, this is healthy, wise advise
I need to write down my tbr, itās so long
Already on it, boss
I did know I could believe in you.
I've been on a gaming spree so I'm reading slowly
Failing to take your own advice
I dont have time to game, so I was looking for a book version of battlefield 6
... I guess I'm reading normally
Hmm, just reading sounds nice
I don't have 20k books on holds
I usually only have a few books checked out on Libby, have to save some for everyone else.
I only have 9 checked out and I expect to finish most of them inside the week
Nice
The one thatās gonna take longer is a Tad Williams
my library tends to only have books over a certain threshold of popularity and recency on their Libby š good for checking out new books I'm not sure I'll like (Schwab and Abercrombie's latest are on hold for me now) but not for checking out older catalogs
I have run into issues with full series not being available
but my Libby didn't even have a strange and stubborn endurance, so that gives an idea of the recency and popularity threshold "requirements"
Ah... at least new books are more expensive so it saves you that
I think the newest Schwab book is proooobably up your alley with a lot of asterisks
Which one is that?
we'll see!
Public library of Seattle my beloved

If you want more lgbt books the Queer Liberation Library is free to join for anyone
The main catch is that theyāre so slow to get anything
Hmm, I wonder if they are still accepting people not in Seattle
If you pay a fee maybe?
Some libraries will take outside the tax base users if you pay to join the library for a year
Also check out local big cities/state capitols because their library system is often open to citizens of the entire state
They let me join the city of LA library system even though Iām not in the city
Hmm, I should look at the school library
Yeah. I got the Durham library on my Libby as soon as I got my university card
There is also a library called Ithra, it's free you just sign up on their website, and they have a ton of books (I just rented Golden Son)

it's a shame that both Temeraire and Horatio Hornblower are a bit unknown nowadays so there's no crossover fics š
Temeraire is basically a fic tbh
true lmao
I should reread Hornblower
it is very horatio hornblower with dragons
It actually began as Aubrey-Maturin fanfic
which as far as I'm concerned means it's better horation hornblower lmao
oh I did hear about that somewhere!
I think in the end notes for the first book Novik talks about that?
or it's an interview or smth
She was one of the founders of AO3
Iām having a lot of trouble with it

Masters of Death really is being a fun read. I'm 70% in now, kinda want to stay up and finish even though I shouldn't
A Marvellous Light 9 ||This book is adorable and SO trope-y. Like Robin falling into the lake and climbing out with his shirt wet? That's just so delightfully cliche.||
My worry appears to have been correct, but at least I'm finished now.
Onto Ascension next, Usha.
You gonna read book 2 before 1?
Oh, whichever one is first. I don't remember, it's in a different room.
I only own the first one, so I can't make a mistake in person. :P
I've read book 2 of a series before book 1 before.
it wasn't really as much as problem as I'd have thought
(it was an accident because I didn't know it was part of a series at the time)
Yeah, I've done it when they weren't clearly part of a series on the front or back cover.
It just reads as though there's a lot of backstory that's being implied rather than stated, and you do a little more work to catch up, but its still readable.
Maybe...
I am very curious of your opinion š
Oh I almost finished Masters of Death
the writing is so fun
Have you read other stuff by this author?
Yep.
I donāt know much about maps but this looks to me like one of the worst fantasy maps Iāve ever seen (this is from a ln Iām reading)
it is very funny to call that "World Map"
looks like the DM picked names from things they saw. peers out the window I guess it's uhhh SubarTU
No giant evil mountain? It definitely sucks
I hope so because the countries are litterly just blobs the same size
They look like long lemons to me
I dont think it would be so bad if each blob wasnt so... empty?? š
Like Subaru land just apparently has half a forest š
Those borders look like they were less decided and more vaguely okayed
also food production seems to rely entirely on Randall unless there's lots of unnamed farms elsewhere
I love how there's no like, duchy of anything, it's just: Duchy
And the fact that each state, even the unnamed ones, has roughly the same shape is kinda interesting
or like, Haydn and Cadiz are duchies maybe? pulled from their european history textbook
The Farm looks like the size of a Duchy in that case
Like I could see it working with specific geographical conditions (a sort of "lunar craters" kind of landscape that could hint and some ancient and destructive conflict), but I don't know if the author had thought that far
could be a world building thing, I'm still early on
Also, do you guys thing that Haydn and Cadiz are regions or cities?
It gives me the " I wrote a fantasy novel and publishers have asked me for a map and I don't really feel like making one" vibe
Also Subartu and Randall don't have a capital, I guess
I bet they are the kings and the āofā is possessive
Lol it's Brando's sandos next cosmere world, governed by the shard Apathy
there's like... a beginning of something that could potentially be interesting with this map (like I said, each country being the same shape could hint at some curious world backstory), but it clearly needs multiple more iterations before it looks complete
I think "worst" is an exaggeration but I was taken aback by it
I agree. Never seen a case where countries look that much like potatoes
No survivor type this time, itās the Aloofor
hm. looking I think Haydn and Cadiz are meant to be cities within the Duchy that is within Ashbury
You know, the wildest thing about this map is the fact that the unnamed countries to the north should be like 10x more threatening than the coastal rivals (assuming a war/politics story)
how much are y'all willing to bet that Ashbury is where the bulks of the plot takes place?
ChatGPT could've drawn a better one
yep you are correct
What is this light novel called
Going left->right 1->4, my guess is 1 is the enemy nation, 2 is where the MC lives, 3 is where the MC flees to, and 4 is the neighbouring power they barter an army from
Well yeah, right angles limit the number of faces, you want the angles to be as large as possible
Chloe spends her days carrying out secret missions for the kingdom of Hagl.
explains why Hagl is the only other country on this map with a capital
Is that a villainess ln
Ah, it's a SpyxFamily like, and carries over the same level of worldbuilding.
nope, the description suggests it's a "retired spy/assassin takes care of a child but the past comes knocking" type of story
Fair point I suppose š¤
I did think it was unfortunate SxF didn't delve into it
It bothered me enough that I dropped the show/manga at the end of S1 (or maybe S1 part 1?), haha
When I started SxF I assumed it would be a blend of comedy and serious arcs like Gintama
from the premise presented
Also it's really funny to me that the description talks about how Victoria flees Hagl for a "neighboring kingdom of Ashbury" when Hagl and Ashbury are not neighbors on the map
Theyāre neighbors! Just not next door neighbors!
I've heard it was originally supposed to focus more on the spy side of things, but the publisher forced the author to pivot into more focus on Anya and her shenanigans cause it'd sell better
Oh dear publisher
It definitely worked for a lot of people! But it was really driving me crazy
Hey it could be on another plane of existence
More fantasy books need giant holes in the ground
Made in Abyss!
Technically stormlight
That map is so sparse it reminds me of more classic fantasy, where the map was super simple and any named location was guaranteed to be visited.
Itās a lightsaber
So you could say you practically already know the plot, lol
I generally think a series is better when it has more going on. SxF got stale after a while
okay at least this is theoretically more interesting than "europe in ww2 but slightly different" maps
Huh
My uni library has Vicious by V.E. Schwab

I know we have a date for Daggerheart but idk how much that's gonna give us world-wise
Hopefully more white rat though
Wait, I didn't put Daggerheart in my calendar
Started a reread of the dark profit saga books and these are so relevant and funny (but also it's sad how relevant they are) it's such a perfect blend of satire, fantasy tropes, and authorial voice

and back to Kingfisher's The Hollow Places for a reread
spooky reads this month!
and.... like all my spooky reads are Kingfisher's stuff
Someone here was reading the Deborah harkness witches books right?
OOOOF (ReZero arc 7)
i've also had The Murders of Molly Southborne by Tade Thompson on my tbr forever and i just got that out in an afternoon today, very quick, very creepy
and there are more?
this guy does some sinister scifi stuff š
I should take a tally of how many books Kingfisher mentions killdeer in
it's a LOT and very specific
Light Bringer (reread) ||I love how absolutely insane The Minitar is||
I was bookshopping today and someone took the books I was looking at right before me š
Kill them.
Theyāre very silly birds
Kingfishers?
Look at me!!! My wing is 100% broken!!! Follow me, Iām helpless!! This way!! Further from the nest!!! Totally crippled birdie here!!!
Killdeer
Do they kill deer
Killdeer nest in the horse riding arena? The trainer marked it with a cone so people would ride around it. Here, one killdeer acts as though it is hurt and easy prey in order to try to lure me away from the nest on May 24. Eventually they settled into the riding routine, hatched out all four chicks June 11 and, that same afternoon, ran off with ...
The call sounds ākill-deerā
Killdeer being vocal, calls, on Lake Kountze beach shore, Belmar Park, Lakewood, Colorado. Rode VideoMic Pro. Nikon D7000.
what is that from?
Victoria of Many Faces
the premise is interesting
ok I've finished my Kingfisher reread binge
time to see if Philip Chase has hands
Way of Edan ||it's a little too close to Christianese but I guess that's the point, if it's taking a little after GGK in that it's sort of Earth-y and meant to be. just wincing a bit||
Greeeeey, there's a chance I'll get to Witch Roads after my current read. It's been in my head since you told me the new book comes out in a couple of weeks that I should read it ASAP š
MMMMM
good
I can't wait to take a look at my author gender stats at the end of this year
should be interesting
Maybe I should add that to my calibre just out of curiosity
I know for sure this year I've read a lot more female authors, last year was closer to a equal split
I love data
in my spreadsheet outside of storygraph, I have gender, race, if the author is queer (and out, too, obvi), year published, personal star rating...
so do I but I don't wanna manually input
I have star rating and a couple more things on my calibre directly
Calibre just has a few too many steps/clicks to enter the data for me to use it as my main
yeah that's fair
well, I think it has like 1 -2 clicks after it's set up, but it's kind of a pain to set up
I just finished The Will of The Many
And uhhhhh what
What is that ending
I guess I have to read the sequel now
Reminds of the safety audit video guy who does safety checks of locations in video games and movies.
Starting His Dark Materials to try and finish catching up before the weekend for Book of Dust 3!
I found more Schwab in the library
You should read that, too.
I need to read these
A Restless Truth continues to have me š
bedlam bride 46 || OH MY GOD THEY MADE CARL INTO A MANOSPHERE INFLUENCER POKĆMON CARD. And King Crescent?! How dare they.||
1/2
The other delivery is getting here on Saturday. I'm just missing one book. (I'm also getting a copy of House of Leaves but that's my roommate's that I ordered for him)
@uncut shoal You read the Alex Verus novels, right? Did you read them in ebook format?
Yes, and yes I did!
I don't suppose your reader tells you the word count, or if it's something easily work-outable?
Ummmm let me check
Any one of them would be fine. They're basically all the same size.
I have the first 4 in a single file so book 5 is 96297 words long
The first 4 together are 372052
Thank you. :)
ReZero Arc 7 ||I FORGOT HE WAS STILL CROSSDRESSING||
This is a fascinating scene. ||It goes back to that scene from Arc 3 where Al thought she was Ram, but now instead of being like "So that's what's going on. Makes me sick.", he's instead able to rationalize it differently because of Gluttony. I forgot that Al wouldn't remember Rem, and that his confusion with her would be lost along with that.||
Memnoch 11 ||I wonder how on earth the TV show plans to adapt this||
||if they even do||
My guess is not...
Mmm yeah probably
Like, ||all the craziness aside just the plot itself feels like it'd risk alienating a lot of people||
||the idea of lestat getting taught the true religious creation story or whatever||
||I expect they'll do TQOTD and they're almost certainly doing body thief but I could see them skipping Memnoch. Though [speculation] I assume there'd probably be some future things (like lestat himself) that are effected by this book, so maybe they'd have to change some of that||
[Vampire Chronicles all but vague, no real plot I think] ||There are things from Memnoch that thread through the later books for sure, but honestly after Body Thief they divide into two camps: books about other characters and their history and ... the weird ones like Memnoch. And if they carry on adapting books it wouldn't be too hard just to skip over the weird ones and find other ways to include any character growth.||
You can probably adapt parts of this one that are relevant into the adjacent books
I know this isn't what you mean but I'm just imagining [memnoch up to 11] ||lestat being halfway through whatever side quest he's on next and then just getting whisked up to heaven for a few minutes||
||and then continuing as normal after||
That'd be perfect
About to start my Adrian Tchaikovsky Quest
I just finished my Heinlein quest and what I learned is that I donāt like Robert Heinlein
More specifically: despite his iconic status the reason people donāt read Heinlein anymore is that his books beat you over the head with his political ideas, which mostly suck and arenāt interesting; he isnāt very fun to read, especially his books after the 1970s; and his misogyny is somehow worse than Asimov, probably because he has more prominent female characters to ogle and because Asimov wasnāt into preteen girls
memonch 11 ||yknow, Memnoch's tale is actually pretty solid. I get the feelings he was feeling||
