So I’m reading a sci-fi horror novel whose premise is basically that what amounts to an intelligent, shapeshifting fungus/virus/lifeform infects a lunar base, and is able to perfectly imitate and absorb people right down to the cellular level (and take on countless nightmare fuel forms), leading to extreme amounts of paranoia among everyone in the base. And the book very conspicuously and frequently refers to it as a “thing”. That’s, uh… pretty damn on the nose.

Each story alternates with chapters, which makes it a little frustrating when I'm more invested in one than the other.||

he does not care about the worlds the stories are set in

there's like half an exception (kinda two halves? or like a half and a 25 percent) but in general the settings are just settings

it's really blatant when you look at a book written by someone that loves that setting like Pratchett with Ankh-Morpork or Tolkien with Middle Earth (especially the Shire)

like, Ankh-Morpork is Sam Vimes' city just like it is Vetinari's and so many others' city

But the aspects he's connected to are kinda generic. You could be like that if you grew up in any militaristic culture, which is common in fantasy. In comparison, Painter's specific issues with both there being a purpose to his creativity, and with him trying to be useful to his society through that, feel very specific to his world. Like they're relatable to the reader, but it's a specific part of his society that artists have a firefighter-like role which would lead to his anxieties.||
