From my (admittedly somewhat limited) experience with the genre I'd say the difference between dark academia and a lot of other stories set in/around schools is the darker/elite/mysterious atmosphere combined with often a more morally complicated and critical look at academia

Though obviously genre is weird, that's not essential - that's just a common theme amongst what I've read/been recommended as "dark academia"

Fourth wing is set in an academy sure but even then that's more... like a training camp or something than a school

Also I second everyone's The Secret History recs because I love that book

I've heard of, like, Someone to Build a Nest In, which (based on premise alone) sounds like it might be what that deacription is going for (the coziness of "Oh I'm a terrible monster that wants to escape my niche and live a human life and I kinda get to do that now" vs the horror of "I am inhabiting a human corpse and no one can find out or they'll kill me but I also still have to do some fairly monstrous stuff to survive after getting into this situation")

But idk that that's a balance that has a ton of novel ways to nail it. You can't just reverse the human/monster dynamic because then that's just relatively normal paranormal dark romantasy

Basically, when I imagine "cozy horror" the coziness sorta has to tie into the horror aspect

I do think nowadays cozy as a genre is liberally applied to many things that make the reader feel cozy and not to the book having cozy beats to it... if that makes sense?

So it's far easier to attach cozy with other sub genres/elements when you're applying the term like that

One other way of doing it I just thought of is using the coziness as a sort of lotus eater machine, maybe a domestic horror about an abusive partner or parent who pushes the main character into a sort of gilded cage of shallow pleasantness that initially seems as a perfect escape. Like, "Oh wow, I get to live in this penthouse apartment with all these incredible conveniences? Cool!", and then they start to realize its a gilded cage, and then they realize their captor is also doing some really bad stuff on the side (I'm mostly thinking of Bluebeard at this point" and it becomes a sort of struggle between accepting the coziness and becoming complicit in the abuser's actions or rejecting them and doing the good thing at the cost of needing to go back to their old (presumably really crappy) life, probably with some moments of investigating their abuser's actions in secret to avoid the classic Bluebeard ending

Which i think actually also would be fairly easy to turn into a relatively normal paranormal dark romantasy now that I think about (the abuser is dracula)

But yeah, i think I'm just running on a different definition of cozy

It’s structured as a history, written by a criminal declared legally insane, who keeps gendering everyone in interesting ways. This society has no gender but the narrator assigned them as he sees fit, based on personality/cultural/rare personal preference but not always matching birth sex. There’s also some really interesting societal ideas on religion, since the last war humanity had was a Church War religion v religion

By concept, it sounds most similar to babel, but it could also be very different to the others again

An evil government just inherently draws more of the focus of the story than a good one, and so the good ones may drop into the background a little

Again, thinking about it narratively. If the protagonists are in a position to be involved in government stuff, it's often more interesting with conflict, which often leads to some level of corruption for the sake of antagonists. If the protagonist is interacting with the government but not really involved in them, that relationships tends to be more interesting with conflict, which again just tends to end up with at least some corruption for the sake of antagonists

Obviously this won't apply to every story but still

And then if the protagonist isn't directly related to the government at all... often they can just fade into the background. Like plenty of books set on earth, speculative or not, that I've read just don't really mention the government at all. Obviously you've got assumed knowledge of the systems but there's no point made of them being corrupt or not, because it's not really relevant

Stories are generally driven by conflict, and conflict with a greater power in the form of those who have governance over the charactes is easy enough to add in. If the government is helpful, then the conflict needs to exist somewhere else and be sufficient that that government cannot deal with it themselves (unless the main characters are part of the government, of course).

I have finished the Jungle and I have to agree with Upton Sinclair’s retrospective opinion that the way it ends is bad and hamfisted

It devolves into long speeches about socialism. Four full pages of the main character listening to a political speech about socialism.

Sinclair could’ve found a better way to get his point across about the oppression of the worker class and how to improve their lot and also a better way to end the book

He’d been doing it for 28 chapters, but stumbled in chapters 29-21

Katabasis ||I'm almost done with the book and like it for the most part, but one thing that gets to me is her backstory in Colorado (At first I was like that's neat I'm also from Colorado), how she used to go climbing in Colorado, with her friends from Colorado, and her family back in Colorado ... No towns or cities, not even like the Rockies or anything. Just, Colorado. She never names a single location in Colorado. Supposedly this place the MC is super familiar with, her old home. But then expecting me to know which cities and countries all these institutions are from lol.||

It reads closeest to Babel as far as content (dark academia, nerding out over niche stuff), though the way she has a lot of fun with narrative and perspective makes the actual reading experience feel different from her other books. It's probably the easiest of her books to get into and to recommend to others, though this is still RF Kuang going heavy places.

||OTOH, I'm not sure if this isn't an attempt to whitewash Mo Ran's past actions, like a "he can't be blamed cause it wasn't his choice". Mo Ran dealing with his guit and self-loathing over his past is one of the best parts of his character, I don't wait it waved off. I suppose we'll have to wait and see how the book handles it.||

@slim perch I didn't enjoy Martin's Game of Thrones because it feels like the story is just the author going wherever he wants with it instead of making things connect. But the writing is great and I loved Tyrion as a character. As for the shining, ||the prophetic nature of the story made the story good because the early elements were actually pertinent to the later parts of the story...something King never does after The Shining (according to the other books of his I've tried to read)||

Gotcha. I’m going to second everything people have said about Mistborn already (depending on how far you’ve gotten, past the 50% mark if you don’t like it then I don’t think you will). Stormlight is better, but I think you have to trust the author a lot and you might have similar concerns. If you want an alternate (since you liked Twilight and The Hunger Games) - Yumi and the Nightmare Paper and Tress of the Emerald Sea are great and I think fit a lot of what you are looking for

I gave up my loan on Six of Crows once I realized I was 4% through it with only 9 days left. Unfortunately, this means I'll have to wait months to get access to it again. Now, it seems I'll be starting The House of Many Ways because that loan became available. It's a sequel to Howl's Moving Castle.

However, it seems to be the third book in a series, and I still have book two on hold, so here's hoping the reading order isn't too important. 😅
