I'm thinking about the introduction of one of my players' inkspren. I might have the inkspren initially show up seemingly as a tiny ink stain on the latent Elsecaller's clothing. I know Inkspren are supposed to maintain their humanoid form, but I figure that when they've lost themselves a bit after the crossover from the Cognitive Realm, they might not old human form as well. A personal interpretation.

So fun fact, the party actually spent the covenant stone crossing in the Highstorm. Before that they had to make an endeavor to convince the caravan leader (a former shardbearer) that he had to turn the caravan back to the covenant stone because one of the party members has sea legs and could feel the advent of the storm. (The parshman was also receiving visions from his enlightened spren).
They weren't on the right side of the Everstorm to witness it
Ah becuase you shifted the timeline to have yours start during the weeping
that's actually super interesting
Yeah, so at the end of chapter one (they did a murder investigation instead of a fight) the parshman walked into the storm and changed for the first time
this inkspren is already one whose form will naturally shift day-by-day even once they've regained more of their sapience. Their name is Fluid (which I settled on before finding it in the list of suggested names in the book, lol). Their personal identity is a little unsteady, and so they slowly shift between a more masculine and more feminine form. Yes the spren whose gender expression is fluid calls themselves Fluid.
maybe it's enlightened 🙂
oh the inkspren? Maybe. That's a neat idea
I have an player whose enlightened inkspren is trying to kill them for almost bonding her little brother.
The way I've written them, they're considered a dilettante in inkspren society. They are unable to reach their potential because they cannot decide on what their purpose is, who they truly are. Eventually they follow Ivory's example, deciding that while forming a bond with a human is effectively a death sentence, so is sitting idly by while the father of hatred destroys mankind then sprenkind
At the very least they might stop the death of all other inkspren by forming this bond
what a dynamic lol
Did Fluid know Ivory was going to kill Jasnah?
I'm undecided
It is! I had them have their first fight during the Highstorm. Ochre (the spren) asked to be awakened so that she could overpower her brother's (Ruddle) bond with Sana (the nascent radiant) and has been haunting her in her dreams until she had enough investiture to make a pass at the other side.
Regardless Ivory did eventually make the bond. Fluid plans to be very discerning about their options and perhaps try to move on to someone else if the bond does not seem right. I had forgotten about Ivory coming at Jasnah from her shadow, sword drawn. Might also be an evocative image to use lol
That would be a killer moment if Fluid finds out at some point
I actually used similar imagery, except, because she's awakened, Ochre drips with red ink akin to blood.
There were other inkspren present there. I have to wonder how that whole thing worked. Did Jasnah's convictions simply start forming a subconscious bond with Ivory and started to draw him from the Cognitive Realm against his will? Then other inkspren accompanied him as he went to kill Jasnah for doing this, and were surprised when he decided not to? Maybe there's WoBs on it
perhaps
The other cryptics definitely purposefully followed Shallan around.
She stood her ground and met the thing’s glare, causing it to hesitate. Behind it, a small clutch of other creatures had materialized from the darkness. She had sensed those eyes upon her during the previous months.
That's a cryptic thing though
The inkspren also seemed to have been watching her for months
though I'm not certain if "those eyes" refers to those on the "small clutch of other creatures" immediately mentioned, or just Ivory's eyes, since his glare is what is mentioned before that
The beads found their way into her mouth. They seemed to move on their own. They would choke her, destroy her. No . . . no, it was just because they seemed attracted to her.
smh even the beads are simping for Jasnah

Questioner
Is being a Knight Radiant at all genetic? Because you have Jasnah, Dalinar, and Renarin in the same family.
Brandon Sanderson
It is not genetic, however… Um… Families or people close to one another are more likely. It’s not genetic. So for instance, if everyone were adopted it would still have the same prevalence.
Questioner
Okay, fascinating!

[interruption hard to hear]
Brandon Sanderson
Well, there are a couple of reasons for that. One is which, attracting the attention of a spren can mean that other spren are paying attention to that area. There are also things in the Cosmere (the shared universe of them) where people are connected spiritually. Um… and that’s part of the magic as well. So… You are more likely to become a Radiant if you know a Radiant.
@compact spindle that one? 🙂
yes, thank you!
I really want to run this.
As someone whos played it and is currently running it, its a fun time
What prevents you, brother? Call and the radiants will rise to the challenge
Ran Session 4? 4.5? tonight, and I got my first Radiant in my modified Stonewalkers: a Thaylen named Nvær became a Lightweaver
My busy schedule, but I’ll figure it out.
Got through the second half of chapter 4 and all of chapter 5 today.
Two of the four party members asked for boons from the Nightwatcher.
One for a weapon to help defeat Ylt, so got the shardblade option from the table.
The other for the ability to heal shardblade wounds, because their axehound animal companion got hit by the honourblade during the fight and got an injury to its leg.
What was curse for healing wounds?
"To take on some of their burden yourself."
Oh
its fun to make the curses boon-relevant but i do like how canonically the nightwatcher would just make them bizarrely unrelated. like that guy that got a bunch of fabric he could sell and his curse was that his vision was just upside down forever. and it wasnt even that bad cuz he just adjusted to that
Aye, I considered that but nothing was springing to mind at the time.
To be fair, the major examples we see in the books are related. Although, they're also made by Cultivation and not the Nightwatcher
ya exactly. the nightwatcher has flair. plus i think its neat, prevents people from trying to game their boons by predicting what the curse would be and mitigate it. ur never gonna know if ur boon is worth it
Culti likes dramatic irony, Nightwatcher probably doesn't get it. Nightwatcher likes experimenting with these strange creatures
