I think I figured out why I couldn't sing as well as I did before

I was using my throat too much when I should have been focusing on my diaphragm which caused hoarsness

Without diaphragmatic support, singers often "squeeze" their throat to hit notes, which can cause hoarseness, vocal fatigue, or even long-term injury

I think this is exactly what happened to me

I've been practicing proper technique and I think I achieved actual vibrato which is pretty exciting

I've heard from my friends that I was an amazing singer a lot of times! Strange to think about it when I was doing the "wobble" instead of actual vibrato

Ragtime (plot summary to clarify all these things) ||yeah, basically plotwise: some time between the opening and the rest of the songs, Sarah and Coalhouse have a baby. Sarah leaves because Coalhouse was a bad baby daddy. Sarah is heartbroken and every time she looks at her son she sees Coalhouse, so she buries him in the ground (grim and depressing, yep). Baby is found by Mother and they drag Sarah over to mother, saying it’s her son. Mother takes in Sarah and the baby. Sarah hides in her room with the baby for weeks (during which time, Your Daddy’s Son is sang). The point of the song is her deep depression over Coalhouse being a bad dad, her inability to support the son, and her ultimately deciding to kill the baby.
Coalhouse finds out where she is staying and starts courting her. (This song is cut from the new recording for some reason, on the old recording its “The Courtship”). They get back together and Wheels of a Dream is sang. Then, Coalhouse’s car gets destroyed in racial hate crime. He refuses to marry Sarah until justice is served. Sarah, desparate, sees the Vice President speaking and runs up to beg him to help her get justice. Someone yells “she has a gun” and… you get the rest. ||

Then Intermission hits

He knows explosives from working in Father’s fireworks factory. Coalhouse’s son is still with Mother. Coalhouse makes a deal with the FBI and the help of Booker T Washington to walk out of a building they have surrounded. He had a bomb threat on the building, a symbol of wealth. He tells the young men following him (including Younger Brother) to tell the story of how there was no justice to be found so that one day, there will be justice. He walks out peacefully and gets shot.
Father dies on the Lusitania. Mother marries Tateh. So, they have a family of mixed cultures and ethnicities. Jewish, Christian, White, Latvian, and African American (as they adopt Coalhouse’s som). ||

But can I recommend Bandcamp as an alternative instead? The first friday of every month, all of your purchases go directly to the artist with no cut taken from Bandcamp itself!

I use Apple Music myself in part largely because it’s just convenient to have it bundled in with Apple One. It has been fine enough for me, though the algorithm for recommendations is worse than Spotify.

Would I recommend it? 🤷‍♂️ I haven’t tried Tidal, and I wouldn’t use Amazon or Google’s offerings. And what I listen to changes from month to month so CDs/Bandcamp don’t really make sense for me these days

Here's my opinion. I am not a reggaetton fan, never have been, and I doubt I ever will be. There's a couple songs that are too iconic in LatAm culture to avoid and which are always fun at a party, but overall its not my favorite.
But I do respect Bad Bunny so much as an artist and that only increases the more I learn about him. (Things I won't mention in this server but you can probably guess), the way he seems super informed about everything, going down to the choices with MetGala outfits, the fact that I know that those albums are deeper than pure beats, even if I don't particularly care about the lyrics...
Naming every country in America. Wow that hit me hard. Its one of the biggest pet peeves I have (next to people spelling Colombia with a u as if it were the university)
And the production value was insane like it tends to be at these things.

Listening to Billy Joel's The Strangr, and I must admit that his love ballads are a complete snoozefest. Movin' Out was great, the title track was a lot of fun as well, but Just the Way You Are and Scenes from an Italian Restaurant being back to back is driving me insance. I'm loving the musical groove they're in right now. It's rather raw and a little unpolished. Reminds me of their mid-2000s music a lot.

Days of Ash (which came out on Ash Wednesday and is rather somber and political) was their first new music since 2018. The pandemic hit right after they wrapped up their previous tour, and then their drummer needed several surgeries to fix some injuries he'd accrued over nearly 50 years of drumming.

So yeah it's been a long-time coming. They're also apparently still on track to release a full album towards the end of the year. So this is like. So cool.

It's a wild feeling. Both EPs sound a bit raw and unpolished. Easter Lily, the new one especially evokes the sound of the early-mid 2000s when they were basically on top of the world.

I like their albums from the 2010s a lot, especially when they played them live. But the studio versions always felt a little over-polished. A little too perfect in terms of production, with all the rough edges sanded off. These on the other hand have a lot more "band in a room" sound.

Man I'm so giddy right now. This is awesome.

And got a signed vinyl and a picture taken with them which was cool

They said at the end of the gig that usually they try and have a life story conversation with everyone that wants one too but the venue was pushing them out the door

Okay I know I could probably count the number of active folks on this server who care about U2 on one hand. But I just gotta glaze this new record somewhere, and I certainly ain't gonna try to do it on Reddit.

Some background. Today (Good Friday) U2 released a surprise EP called Easter Lily. I've bene listening to it basically on repeat and I think it's easily their best work in decades. This is coming off the heels of them releasing a different surprise EP back on February, Days of Ash (it came out on Ash Wednesday).

Days of Ash is a heavy, tense, very very political record. The songs on it address a swath of difficult and dark situations in the world today, like Minneapolis, Iran, Palestine, and Ukraine. The band wrote and recorded the record in the space of two weeks. The production on it is raw, sharp, and unfiltered. While I'm definitely a fan of their work in the 2010s, one thing I felt was a misstep was the level of perfectionism they applied to the mixing. They layered and mixed and overdubbed to the point where a lot of the songs lost their burs and sharp bits, the rawness of the four members of the band just making music. None of that on Days of Ash. There was simply no time to overthink it.

Fast-forward a month later, and the band apparently decided to do it again. Easter Lily wasn't planned when Days of Ash was released. But after a couple weeks of returning to their main project (a new full length album), they decided they weren't done being in the present moment. So they went back and spent another two weeks recording a new EP from the ground up. And the result is in my humble opinion, a staggering masterpiece.

The speed at which U2 recorded the album lends it a sense of rawness yes, but also of self-confidence in the band's own voice. A confidence they'd lost in the 2010s, when it seemed their main goal was to try and chase the charts. Here they've remembered that making music is a worthy pursuit in itself, not something that has to be done in service of arbitrary metrics of success.

The songs on Easter Lily are unmistakably U2. They've got the Edge's chiming guitar front and center, and Adam Clayton's bass and Larry Mullen Jr's drums have their typical rolling drive (Larry in particular sounds fully recovered from his surgeries in late 23/early 24). Bono's voice is full, clear, and strong. But despite the familiarity, it feels fresh and unprocessed. The extra production is minimal, just a bit of synthesizer and keyboards here and there, but not too much. This record is the sound of a band playing in a room together.

But even then, the record takes some bold creative choices. The first track, Bono isn't on it at all. Instead the Edge takes lead vocals for the entire song, something that hasn't happened since 1993. And the final track of the record is a dramatic change of pace: nearly seven minutes of Bono singing alone over some lovely organ ambience by Brian Eno. It evokes the feeling of a sermon in a church, with Bono's voice alternating between conversational whisper and soaring holler.

It goes without saying that both of their surprise EPs are interwoven with the band's religious sensibilities. I don't find it to be distracting or preachy though, and I'm definitely not someone you'd describe as spiritual in any way. What they're doing here on these records, especially Easter Lily, is using religion and spirituality as a lens. A lens through which to view hope, self, and the essence of human goodness. Goodness that, even in these dark times, can be found everywhere. In each other, in our memories, in the simple desire to do and be better.

As a pretty diehard U2 fan, I feel absolutely spoiled right now. 11 new songs in less than two months, with another full album on the way later this year? It's been nearly a decade since they released their last full album of new material. A part of me was worried that they'd spent some of that time durdling and over-thinking again. This is the exact opposite of that. Both of the EPs are incredibly present in the here and now. Days of Ash felt necessary, but Easter Lily feels essential. It's the kind of record the band was made to write. And I am here for it.
