PHM didn't overpromise but delivered on what it set out to do. My wife went in blind and it hit her way stronger than Interstellar too. There is a heart to PHM that Interstellar just doesn't have imo.

I've seen plenty of other complaints about Grace being dumbed down to much too. Rocky, in the movie, has all the answers and Grace more follows along. Lots of shots of him going "oh yeah shoulda thought of that"

Even in the book Grace provides a human perspective when Rocky can't understand a concept but Rocky intuits things faster just lacks ways to communicate it at times.||

On the idea of stakes PHM || Saving earth is never at stake so we know how the story will end. Instead we have "will Grace and/or Rocky survive".

The core of PHM is Grace learning to trust himself and throwing off his imposter syndrome after getting booted from academia.

Rocky almost dying saving Grace is a point of tension. As is the ultimate test of Grace choosing to go back and save Rocky even if it means he never sees earth again. This shows Grace has found something be actually cares about other than his own skin. And that to me is more emotional tension than anything we get in Interstellar.||

#

In the end the emotional beats of PHM just ring more true to me than Interstellar.

Personally I am glad that PHM empathized the emotional elements over the science elements. PHM is very expository book in a way that works but that exposition is mostly in Graces head, which is hard to translate. Also this encourages people who are interested in the science but have only watched the movie to read the book.

The cut everyone’s talking about isn’t what they think, it is the cut with all the redundant scenes which they make to see which scenes work best. Not a longer version of the movie with everything that was cut.

I love it, but I see why many don’t. ||It is presented as a very scientific film, and is very accurate in some places. But by the second half it becomes more clear that it is not with the Tessaract. I personally loved the direction it went, and it really resonated with me. But I see how people take that as a failing.||

I think that is another reason why people are comparing PHM to it. PHM doesn’t break it’s the rules. I would say Interstellar doesn’t either but PHM is more upfront about what the rules are.

Take into account my definition of hard sci-fi is that it follows the scientific laws it sets out. All sci-fi is inaccurate and can’t actually happen and the generally accepted scientific ideas of the past will probably be inaccurate. See Martian ||soil is very toxic, so you will not be growing potatoes in it.||

yeah but even then i think you could argue some of the stuff in DS9 is a defense of capitalism. I think its absolutely clear that a diehard starfleet officer would have that opinion but im not entirely sure its the ethos of the entire series and more a framework for which various writers can make their own commentary. Star trek isn't the opinion of one writer but that of a community of scifi writers to make their own stories

But for Weir's own work? I can absolutely believe that he wasn't thinking about social commentary at all, and that's a valid way to write. I have not finished ds9 but it is very much a more critical look at the utopian federation vs tng, which is very straightforwardly pro federation ideals. Picard and Riker will both straight up say “we have moved past xyz prejudice” multiple times when dealing with other cultures, and, while there are times Picard is portrayed as being too rules bound and stubborn, this is usually when dealing with the Prime Directive

I think part of the issue with the prequels is the way those scenes are handled. There are a lot of scenes in offices and conference rooms, and in some cases a scene ends just so the same characters can go talk in a different room.
So it's not that the prequels spend too much time on politics, rather it's that they did it in a kind of boring way

Yeah. It's one of those things where a lot of people are able to corectly identify the area where the movie is suffering, the politics, but not the reason why it's suffering. So they blame the presence of that stuff rather than the execution
