But in terms of sci fi shows between 2002 and 2026 it seemed a relatively easy target for "show that's got some baseline similarities" in a way not a lot else does

Did they come out on different sides of Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones? Clearly. Does The Expanse have a lot clearer ideas about its mysterious bad guys than Firefly seems to have? Yeah, and that gives it a much better sense of scale. Did the Expanse get to, yknow, live? Mostly! Still gotta get the last three books out eventually

, and ||that her syringe was a sexually transmitted poison. This would allow her to survive/take down a reaver ship when she gets captured. You can see how this could be problematic||

Firefly things sexual assault ||Its suspected from a number of things that Inara was going to have both a terminal disease plotline (possibly to be rescued from by Mal) and a rape plotline. Just lots of make the woman suffer either to be saved by a man or to be defined by her trauma||

Also he apparently pitched bringing Spike back as a firefly character.

Yeah but when you break it down compared to basically all of his work firefly I think has the best of the dialogue. Some of his work the snippy dialogue is unecessary material just idle stuff. In firefly it almost always provides characterization. It’s closer to the platonic ideal of the good version of that trope

People (including, it must be said, me) have a lot of nostalgia for it but I think a lot of that is because it died before it had a chance to ruin itself, so it was pure potential and could be greater in the imagination than it could have delivered.

There are a couple changes to the Hiriluk flashback that I think is weaker. ||Specifically, Hiriluk doesn't feel like he has the desperation to save the doctors in the live acion that he had in the manga. He already knew about it and he just calmly walks off, instead of learning about it and rushing there thinking he's the only way. I also think the reveal of the doctors being healthy is better in the manga, because we see at the same time Hiriluk does.||
