I've read the first two books, and thought it was pretty enjoyable. But from what I understand it falls off at some point after that?

First, it needs to be known that a lot of what carried the initial 50ish chapters was the art. Panels were stunning and whimsal and captured a certian unique hazy energy for the Greek gods. The series was always a bit shallow, though.

However, my biggest problem is like I said before: The author presents itself as one thing anf becomes something entirely different. Rachel Smythe called herself a folklorist, and prided herself and the story on all the research and feminism. It was the feminist retelling at the time.

Instead. We got (LO) ||An Mc who forgoes all of her morals for a man who has abused an enslaved everyone around her. If someone homwrecks her, irs a moral sin, but when she does it shes "taking what's hers". Hades is even worse. He owns slaves to fund his modern corporate billionaire empire, blames any flaw he has on his childhood trauma and never changes, and has a hot streak of preying on young and emotionally vulnerable women. One of my lest favorite things Hades does is neglect his son Thanatos (nyx canonically abandoned than because he wasn't as sad as kid Hades.) And blame said neglect/apathy on the fact that Kronos abused Hades. Thanatos ends up apologizing to his abuser after his girlfriend (whom I want to punch) forces them to reconcile.

And thats just three characters. I could go on and on about how every single plot point fumbles because Rachel is too afraid of letting hades and persephone be accountable. There are characters that straight up do the exact same things those two assholes do (Zeus with cheating, Minthe and Leuce with bullying and homewrecking) and get dragged over the coals, but Hades and Persephone do it and its "justified" or "the others deserved it". Do that for 280 chapters and youve got yourself a disaster I've resented ever since I started hating it around chapter 190.||

Theres so much more because there is not a single redeeming- oh no wait yes there is!

That's uh. Huh. That's not at all where I would have expected that to go given the two books I read.

LO ||I thought the whole time it was setting up a Hades character development plotline.||

(LO +TW: ||sexual assult||) ||Demeter is the silver lining in the series but the series was BENT on kicking her down at every turn. Shes sexually manipulated by Zeus, and then Hera disregards her trauma during the war and flat out says Demeter never deserved to be queen (after demeter protected her from attacks). Hades rigged an election to keep Demeter from being queen of the earth (dont ask why she needed a vote and none of the men did), and told her to her face that he would rather be the poorest man alive than let her come close to power. All over volcanoes that his mother gave, and she was willing to compromise with this and he metaphorically spat in her face.

Persephone... she was hard on, but she knew first hand how her family was and just wanted to protect her and give her the best. She isnt invited to persephone's wedding (hera takes the mother role), and any attempt to try anf protect her 19 year old daughter from the 2000 year old creep, shes shut down anf called crazy. It's always seen as a "shes thinking small while persephone is thinking Big because she wants to be QUEEN" but Rachel set deme up to be a queen only to snatch it away anf never give it back. It's so frustrating.||

||NO. he is the exact same from ep 1 to ep 280. He never apologizes, he never changes, he never gets better. A major plot point in s1 was him owning people anf persephone thought that was bad and that plot was dropped because they kissed :3 it always ends in her bending to help him, console his temper, fix his mess. It's insufferable||

And again, this is barely getting to other dropped plots, theres so many useless characters

LO ||so. Hera is very explicitly seen as the "better" goddess. Hades desired her the most. Shes a secret fertility goddess (theres only 5... dont ask), she sees persephone's "ambition" and sets her up with Hades, who's her former affair partner. She goes behind demeter's back with this because Hera knows persephone has a scholarship to college that rides on her being a virgin goddess. That and PERSEPHONE IS CANONIVALLY PERMA 19.

But anyway. Yes, hera is there for persephone getting married. They pick out an ugly dress they give each other a stupid mother daughter heart to heart. The whole circus. Hera is more there for persephone than she is fot her own kids (yes. Ares and Hephaestus and hebe are in it. DO. NOT. ASK. 🙃)||

You know what annoys me the most with retellings, specifically Hades/Persephone ones, is the vilification of Demeter. Like hello, she is the protagonist of the story. The original is the story of a mother trying to get her kidnapped daughter back.

I want a retelling that is an epic revenge story. Where we see Demeter wreck violence on the Gods who stole her child.

The novels are wildly racist and sexist, even beyond the amount I expected from the films. In Live and Let Die (1954), Bond and American spy Felix Lieter sit in a Harlem restaurant and joke about how political correctness means they can’t say the n word anymore. And they use the full word the whole conversation

||I don't think El should have died. I really didn't like that, and it kinda felt like it was shoehorned in to make the ending tragic. Looking online, it seems like that was the main issue other people had as well.||
||Otherwise, I really liked the ending. Despite her death, that sequence with Mike talking about all of the other characters through the lense of DnD was really heartwarming. Especially when it was followed by the next generation of kids starting to play it in their place.||

||Nancy, Robin, Steve, and John all had a stellar ending. It felt like they all of been in a kind of haze throughout the show, knowing a little bit of what they want but not how to get there or if it was actually something they wanted or just something that they were supposed to want. To see them finally figure it out and thrive was very well done. Steve becoming the baseball coach is probably my favorite thing from the ending.||
||I liked that Mike's mom wears a dress that shows her scars. She's an absolute badass, and isn't afraid to hide what's happened to her in the name of defending her kids.||
||El and Kali tricking Vecna into showing his true face to all of the children was excellent. Love when that kinda reveal is done well, and in this show it definitely was.||

I get that he was 'defeated' when they got the children away from him, but to then have him die like a Star Wars character with no real drama or clash around it felt kinda eh to me. I felt like I accidently skipped forward or something.||
||On the too long side, we didn't need the graduation scene.

I feel like that was the payoff to something that wasn't properly promised. Last we saw of anyone at the school, they beat the snot out of Dustin. There was no "everyone coming together" moment.||

So Film Theory made a video on the theory that the Stranger Things finale is actually fake, and I gotta say, laid out like this, it is pretty convincing. I did write it off as just "Oh people didn't like the ending and went off to Copeland to try and say how it's fake", but actually hearing someone talk about the evidence is interesting

Do I ultimately think it is a fake ending? No, I think it's probably just a bunch of coincidences that the writers didn't think through. But it is interesting at least

The real things you need to be a comic book fan, the only things really are: 1) get attatched to a minor character who almost never shows up, 2) argue online about comics, 3) tell everyone they need to track down this obscure movie or run to “really” get a mainstream character, 4) remain convinced that the best version of the characters/comics is the one from when you were in high school
