Kraven ||I forgot that the movie includes the Foreigner who is called that because he's "not from around anywhere" and a guy who can randomly pause time or something||
i need to watch the venoms so i have even more stuff to make fun of knull with
I’m so glad Aaron Taylor Johnson got a good role finally (the dad in 28 years later)
He was great in Nosferatu
||i’m unfamilar with people using “original sin”, capitals or no, to refer to anything other than the partaking of the fruit and the inheritance of this sin by all children thenceforth. thing is there is an obvious Genesis allusion, to the story of Cain. but they don’t make it.||
||I think theres a thing about each person having an original sin or wtver in some of the more odd american evangeicalism christianity area (which tbh the movie is mroe based on even though it has catholic aesthetics||
Hello! It’s the ~1.5 month Hermitcraft Season Check-In
How have y’all been keeping up w/ various Hermits? Anyone you’ve particularly enjoyed? Anything interesting?
Personally I just caught up with Bdubs’ episodes, and his newest episode is very magical, I greatly enjoy the landscaping work he’s done
I’ve fallen behind on a lot of hermits, but I have one doc episode and 3 mumbo episodes to go before I’m back up to speed with everyone I want to keep up with (Doc, Bdubs, Mumbo, Grian)
From memory I've been mainly keeping up with gem, grian, tango and mumbo, but I've watched a few random episodes from some others
Hell yeah
I remain mildly curious enough about Avengers: Doomsday that I plan on watching it. Not sure if I'll see it in theaters, though.
With Marvel movies and shows these days, my interest can be gauged by how I choose to see them. If I'm genuinely interested, I'll watch them in theaters when they release or each episode as it premiers on Disney+ (like Thunderbolts and Loki Season 2). If I'm somewhat interested but not enough to shill out for a theater experience, I'll just wait till it goes on Disney+ and watch in then (like The Marvels, Brave New World, and the new Fantastic Four). And if I'm simply not interested, I just won't watch it at all (like Deadpool 3, the new Daredevil show, and the Agatha show).
I haven't always followed the pattern, though. I saw Quantumania and Multiverse of Madness when they released in theaters and was disappointed both times, and I didn't see Wakanda Forever until it was on Disney+ because I simply never made time to see it in theaters, but I wish I had because I loved it.
In the grand tradition of Star Trek captains singing holiday standards, for your consideration: "Wonderful Deep Space Nine" sung by Captain Sisko, Major Kira, Constable Odo, Lieutenant Commander Worf, Chief O'Brien, Congenial Barkeep Quark, Plain Simple Garak, and the rest of the Star Trek: DS9 ensemble. Special appearances by Morn, Martok, Moog...

PJO S2 is sooooooooo good
This reminds me to rewatch Rent

finally say Zootopia 2 and the score was driving me crazy
"Zootopia 2" is being celebrated in theaters nationwide.
In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia 2,” detectives Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman) find themselves on the twisting trail of a mysterious reptile who arrives in Zootopia and turns the mammal metropolis upside down. To crack the...

it wasn't until Hemsworth was holding the baby that I realised what was happening
I think you mean Evans
I did yes
The Thor teaser leaked and I think it’s much more interesting than the Steve one.
||It shows him walking through the forest, praying to Odin that he would have the strength to find Love, who I’m guessing has been kidnapped by Doom||
you could never make blazing saddles today. movies take a really long time to film and it's already 11am on the west coast. also most actors and film staff would probably like to spend christmas eve with their families.
If I go watch Avatar 3, it will genuinely be for these two
They deserve each other (derogatory)
i mean, I don't think they had much of a choice either; what happened with Kang's actor got out of hand
Lady and The Tramp (1955) ||Lady is so adorable omg
||
||she's kinda like my dog, and she's the same age as him too!
||
I love the opening of that film with the beautiful snowy street, Christmas carol, and soft cozy feeling of peace
Christmas intro to movie Lady and the Tramp.
Oh codenames it was gorgeous
I didnt know thats how it started and I was fixated the whole time~
I mean they could’ve easily recast Kang, would’ve even made sense in universe. The problem is the declining popularity of the MCU and especially people seeming to dislike the multiverse stuff made them panic.
It feels so deliberately nostalgic and placid. A solid 1 minute of being inside a 19th century Christmas card
You know what? Sometimes when the discussion about Marvel gets serious, my dad always says, "IT'S JUST A MOVIE!"
My other favorite part of this movie is that Lady genuinely things her owners are named “Jim Dear” and “Darling”, because they only ever address each other with those pet names
Lady and The Tramp 20 mins in ||lowkey id be in my feelings if I was called "that girl" by my parents, I get you lady 😭||
The Disney wiki has some obscure media that suggests their names are James and Elizabeth Brown and that Aunt Sarah is Jim’s aunt
Lady and The Tramp 30 mins in ||see. I knew about the cats... I did not think it was gonna be THAT bad 😭||
||like I love their movements being on beat with the drums, it's so fun but uhhhhh OOF 😭||
Yeah... that 😬
Disney slapped a warning for racial stereotyping in this film for a reason
Yeah I can see why 🤣
||cause I understand that cats are often depicted as trisky and sneaky but you add that with the stereotyping and its so much worse 😭||
In spite of this, I still really adore it so far
is lady and the tramp the one with the weird racist stereotypes against asians??? i thought that was the aristocats
It’s both
With the same cat breed
Siamese cats in mid 20th century Disney films just couldn’t catch a break
Which is crazy because those movies are 20 years apart!
In 1955, alright, i get it. It's not good but its 1955. Doing that in a 70s movie is kinda crazy 😭
incredible how much racism they managed to pack in the aritocrats in like 3 minutes though
They were too busy not being aggressively racist to the black jazz cat to not be racist to the Siamese piano cat
I think the funniest racism whiplash I've had with a Disney movie is 101 Dalmations.
Its fine for the whole movie until ||Rodger randomly is like "we'll have a Dalmatian plantation!" And my mom and I look at each other like
||
Fun trivia for that cat btw, they originally wanted Louis Armstrong but he died before they could convince him
i havent actually watched 101 dalmations but plantation isnt inherently a racist term
Its not! It still sets my alarms off 🤣
Just kinda means a large farm estate
You should watch that film just because Cruella is so delightfully petty and Roger writes a diss song for her before she’s even been slightly evil

Yes its so good!
I really liked it, and noticing all the animation tricks they used was fun too~
At this point in the film all she’s done is be annoying while visiting her friend and float the idea of a puppy coat
And break driving laws
Roger was her number 1 opp it was great 🤣
tbf her name is cruel villain
Or Cruel Devil
Lady and The Tramp 40 mins ||This is the night, such a beautiful night, and we call it Bella note
||
||one of my favorite Disney songs and this my first time seeing it in yhe movie
||
||Ah yes the other moment of the film with ethnic stereotyping but this time it’s ok because society have moved pass anti Italian racism ||
Didn't she specifically ask if she could have their puppies for that coat?
It's been a while since I watched that movie
Yes that’s the second part of my comment
I mean that's a little more than floating the idea
If someone asked me if they could turn my pets into clothes I'd make a diss track about them too
Cruella ||the dogs deserved it for killing her mom or something||
||Damn puppies with their time machines||
I still can't believe they tried to make a relatable villain backstory for Cruella of all people lol
I remember seeing claims it was a good movie, but it's been years since I last heard anything about it, so maybe that was just astroturfing
Eyes Wide Meow
Is Pluribus ep 9 the finale?
think so
Stargate episode: prominently features a child
Me: Time to start the countdown until Jack throws a fit about child endangerment or something related
Did u watch it? What’d u think
You can also do this with leverage except it’s a shorter time until the meltdown because Nate is an alcoholic and risk to children makes him drink more
who the hell is the guy on the bottom right
The one who owns Anakin and Shmi
The Green Knight is free on tubi
I guess I’m watch that as my Christmas movie tomorrow
Pretty Dev Patel and the couple that wants him to be their third. And also there’s a big green guy with an axe
oh I gotta watch that
I loved The Green Knight a lot
Stranger Things S5E4 ||It's very funny how there was no reason for Vecna not to kill Joyce. He just decided not to.||
||HAHAHAHA WILL KILLED THE DEMOGORGONS THE SAME WAY VECNA KILLED PEOPLE LAST SEASON||
||WILL IS FINALLY DOING SOMETHING, meanwhile Mike is more worthless than ever lmao||
||Bro what are you even doing here||
||excuse me, Mike is locked in this season!||
||he's doing his best at what he gets to do he just doesn't get much to do||
||What HAS he done||
||I can think of something that everyone has done except for Mike and Jonathan||
||well i mean i can name things that jonathan has done, it's just that he hasn't done anything helpful except for "fill in for dustin", and even that he messed up at||
ST 5x4 ||I liked seeing him really lock in to try to help get the younger kids out of the battlefield at the end. I thought that was a nice moment, seeing him really take action to get them out of there||
Mmm
I suppose
||But he wasn't very effectual at it, and anyone else would have done it||

Fun fact: In the DC Universe, every year on Christmas, Santa personally goes to Apokolips to give Darkseid coal
Love that it’s just Darkseid and not everyone else on Apokolips
I love the lore implications of him calling Darkseid “young fella” lol. Santa is an ancient ageless being
NOOOOOOO WE STARTED WAKE UP DEAD MAN TOO LATE IN THE EVENING AND NOW EVERYONE ELSE IS GOING TO BED
THERE'S HALF THE MOVIE LEFT AND I NEED ANSWERRRRS
We did this with Tenet a couple days ago but this is so much worse
Just keep watching the movie and act surprised when everyone else sees the second half tomorrow
My family was trying to pick a movie earlier tonight and WUDM was a contender, but I just… really wasn’t feeling a murder mystery for some reason. So we did Wicked instead since none of them had seen it
My family had my grandpa over for Christmas, and sometimes he'll just pick a movie he wants to see and we'll roll with it that will just happen to be what we watch on Christmas Eve. One year, it was Star Wars; The Force Awakens. This time, it was Iron Man 2. 😅 Quite random.
So we followed it up with starting Thor last night and finishing it today, which led to skipping to Thor; Ragnarok after that. All quite odd. Not what I expected us to be seeing on Christmas, but it is what it is, y'know?
I will say, though, regarding Thor; Ragnarok ||I don't remember Hulk's voice sounding so bad. It's very autotuned and ridiculously obvious that it's very autotuned and I don't know how I didn't notice because now it's very immersion-breaking. :P||
Wait ragnarok isnt the second thor /j
does anyone know why some movies and other media will do the big flashy credits for the big names. and then repeat all those credits in the big ol scrolling list
Next batch of Stranger Things
Derek is surprisingly funny, I actually really like him lmao
I think it’s actually the first and only Thor movie
Yeah it was real weird how one of the main Avengers only got one movie
And it wasn't even solo cuz Hulk was there too
(actually i say that facetiously, but hulk genuinely did only get one solo movie)
ST 5.5 ||ooh, what a cliffhanger. I’m guessing Dustin just realized that the “shield generator” is actually some kind of nexus for the entire Upside-Down.||
Ohohoho that was good
they get paid a lot of money to lead and part of the contract is that they are orderede by how important they are*
and then the end credits are usually in order of appearence e
-# *the featuring and And credits are at the end and weird
It just became a Thor marathon today that skipped the second one. Unfortunately, that also included Love and Thunder.
Time for ST 5x5
5x5 start ||how did vecna get the kids if the demogorgons died in the real world?? Did they just... throw the kids through the portal??||
||I guess vecna wants to use 12 kids (with powers?) to turn the world into the UD||
5x5 ||Oh my GOD these two boys are so annoying||
||please GOD get this plotline out of the show||
||for god's sake these two are being SO annoying||
5x5 ||oh what the heck||
5x5 ||oh my goddd the cliffhanger xD||
I watched sentimental value and it’s the best movie I’ve watched this year. Does so much so well from the editing to the score which are done so well. Really hit me on an emotional level that I can’t describe
The acting in the movie is also brilliant, stellan skasgard and Renate Reinseve in particular really blew me away
Sentimental value ||the movie gets extra points for using Cannock chase in the final scene which is a perfect song||
Marty supreme on Sunday is next
Watching this movie in an empty theatre was also a new experience but it was a good one
||They grabbed the kids and then came back to kill everyone||
||So they took the kids, shoved them in the magic goop, and then returned||
I have seen it a trillion billion times and it does not get old once
Time to see what all the hype is about
You can run from it, you can hide from it, but media will return to KDH all the same
Is good movie.
Just got out of Marty Supreme. It was pretty good! Would recommend
No spoilers, but the trailers really don’t give anything away lol
If you think you know what the movie is about from them, you’re probably wrong
Marty Supreme ||ngl I was rooting against the dude for a good stretch of the movie, but accepting the 'small' win and not getting into the tourney in the end was I guess an inch of character growth||
It's definitely like, the cinematic equivalent of a run-on sentence. In a good way.
ST s5e 5 ||what do we think about the Steve/Dustin conflict? Seems terribly forced in my view||
ST 5x5 ||I kinda get it but it also, like a lot of the interpersonal conflicts this season, frustrates me||
In what way
||I get why Dustin's whole thing he's been doing because of Eddie is annoying Steve, and I understand how the general rest of the season and how he's being treated is making Steve more upset and so making him lash out more at Dustin. But the longer they go on, the more things like this and the nancy/jonathan/steve conflict annoy me because I find it really frustrating that they're arguing over dumb things and in the process making their world-saving mission harder.
-# I get, as well, that that's probably realistic, I just don't enjoy it when it feels like a single conversation and a bit of sense could fix it||
||Part of it I think is the fact that there’s really no substantial character writing to be done anymore since we know these characters well enough by now, so they’re basically just killing time with most of the meaningless conflicts this season.
Everything feels filler while they all recite the lore and their plans to each other 60% of the time lol||
ST s5e5 ||noah’s going pretty hard with his performance. His expressions while he was possessing Vecna were crazy||
||dustin literally says “don’t touch anything” and Johnathan makes like he didn’t just hear that and goes “they’re outta range” 😑||
Yeah they uh
Coulda made it more broken up
ST s5e6 ||yeah a rifle round will totally destroy an inter dimensional entity. Gr8 plan guys||
||dope visuals of the upside down bridge||
Agree, but overhyped. Animation was fantastic though
Marty Supreme ||I found a lot of the movie very stressful lol. It had a lot of great performances, though.||
Wake Up Dead Man good
Ye
ST s5e7 ||Christ this is the longest a scene has dragged. Did we really need a 10 min scene of will coming out||
DNFed one battle after another
5x6 ||honestly I do struggle a little to take vecna/henry entirely seriously||
||It is very funny that his big W was followed up immediately by two consecutive Ls||
the spanish prisoner ||man. this guy is stupid||
ST S5E6 ||Very funny how the Demodogs conveniently killed the soldiers with Robin, an then avoided literally everyone else for no real reason because they were beelining for Max||
||Im not even sure I'm at that point yet, its just something about the performance unfortunately comes across a lot too much as "person trying to be a scary monster" instead of actually scary or monstrous||
||Nah you're on Ep 6, when I say his W is followed by two Ls, I mean him taking the kids, and them immediately being foiled by Will twice in a row||
Ah right
5x6 ||I think its mainly when hes in vecna form and when he's really pissed (like with max & holy at the edge of the cave). When he's vecna, I just have a hard time not seeing it as a guy doing a scary voice, and when he's pissed it just looks a bit over the top or something? Idk. I liked his performance in s4, from memory||
||I think its just the I-am-really-mad stuff||
||scratch that. everybody in this movie is stupid||
i watched the green knight
it was mid
i feel like it never really came together
@lone canyon have you seen it
I wouldnt necessarily disagree but I loved it anyway
i knew none of the lore
films should stand on their own
The film doesnt require you knowing any arthurian legend
spanish prisoner ||also all this recurring business about “the japanese” feels vaguely racist||
Time for Round 2 of Kate Bush topping the charts because of Stranger Things
ST 5x6 ~almost half way ||yknow, I'm starting to feel like byler isnt happening. I dont have strong feelings either way, but I know some people who really think/want it to happen. I think if it were gonna be endgame we would've seen more signs by this point||
||What is Byler lmao. Is that Byers and Wheeler? That describes two possible relationships lmao||
||You probably mean Nancy and Jonathan||
||Because Mike is clearly and unambiguously with El||
||But still lmao||
||Mike and will||
||I assume people just didnt like the ship name wike/mill, because ive only ever seen byler used for them||
||Mike is entirely too committed to El||
||They have not had any relationship problems at all since they got in a relationship||
||you say as Im literally watching a scene of them arguing xD||
||Tbc I dont think thats a major problem or evidence, just funny timing||
||Yeah but they're not arguing in an unhealthy way, like Nancy and Jonathan were||
||Couples can argue but that doesn't mean it shakes their relationship. Nancy and Jonathan was shaking their relationship||
||After vol1 I was like... I doubt it, but there's enough time that I could see it maybe being pulled together. But now... even if the feelings are there on both sides, assuming we get will out of a coma by the end of the episode there's only 2 episodes to break up mileven and out mike and will and get them together soooo I'm gonna say it seems definitively not happening||
i give the spanish prisoner 1/10. why did anyone like this
||I didn;t even know that Mike/Will was a ship even in S1||
||I thought the seeds of it were only planted in S4||
||After Will had already realized he was never gonna get with Mike||
ST ||I've not rewatched the early seasons lately. I know some people argue there's evidence for it back there, but I dont know||
ST s5 up to mid 5x6 ||on the other side, I dont know if I want jonathan and nancy to break up or not, I just want their drama to go away. The whole nancy love triangle thing is really annoying me and ruining my enjoyment of multiple of my favourite characters in the show||
||I think any evidence people have of it is based in S2, with Will feeling like he was being left behind because nobody wanted to play D&D, but that doesn't work because A. That's a feeling he felt for everyone, B. It can read very platonically even if it was just about Mike, and C. I doubt he even knew he was gay yet||
||Honestly Nancy romances have always been mid||
||It's never felt natural unlike everyone else||
||Even in S1, her relationship with Jonathan started after he literally stalked her and took pictures of her having sex with Steve||
||And nothing that has happened after made that relationship feel any more natural||
||Her relationship with Steve feels more natural, but it's weird how insecure Jonathan is because after Steve joined the party and stopped being an asshole, they've been very platonic as far as I remember||
||I dont even care about who she ends up with I just hate how she's trying to do plot and everyone around her seems to only be able to think about her romances||
||It's clear that Steve has moved on from Nancy completely, and to be fair their relationshipe ven when they WERE together, was super unhealthy||
||Yeah she keeps going "MY SISTER IS MISSING" and literally neither of them care||
||I find it so frustrating to watch jonathan and steve's bickering and i hated the scene with murry in vol1||
||EXACTLY||
||I don't even get where their bickering comes from in this season specifically, because it never felt this prevelant since the start of the series, and Steve, as I said, has alreayd shown that he has no interest in Nancy anymore||
||her sister is missing and her parents are in hospital and everyone around her seems to only care about her romantic potential. Murry asking her about her "mood" and telling jonathan it was a good time to propose was even more insane and annoying||
||Jonathan being insecure about it is one thing, but Steve should have been indifferent to it because he shouldn't care||
||I think jonathan sees the issues in their relationship and so is insecure about steve being around in case nancy leaves him. Less because of what steve does, more because he worries theyre already falling apart||
Yep yep yep
||As funny as I find Murray, he is very good at ruining the mood at every opportunity||
ST ||murry is very hit or miss for me. Sometimes he's funny, sometimes he's really annoying||
||I like Murray but I get why people don't, the series does use him a bit too much sometimes||
ST s5 question ||when the earth split at the end of s4, how much did the public see/know about that? Did it just look like canyons opened, or was there the red glow/spores?||
||Especially since Murray has lost his schtick as the insane conspiracy theorist||
This is a very good question
||I imagine there were spores and stuff, but the propaganda machine of the martial law that was imposed gave them false answers that they accepted||
||Cuz it's not like anyone but the party knows what is happening, so they'd probably believe whatever they were fed by the military||
ST S5E7 ||Mrs. Wheeler's role in this story is so funny, knowing that this is the same woman who fell in love with a teenager in S3||
5x6 ||ok, that was a nice moment between jonathan and nancy. I liked that||
||It resolves that plotline so that's enough for me lmao||
||and it seemed like Steve and Dustin's drama is over too||
||Now hopefully Steve and Jonathan can shake hands and kiss||
ST 5.6 start ||HUH?
What in the arcane s2 is going on||
Oh also, ST S5 general ||I'm kinda happy the Russians are just gone lmao||
ST 5x6 bit past midway ||i think i would care more about the jonathan/nancy ship if jonathan was like... a character in any of the show||
||Yeah Jonathan is easily the worst character in the main cast||
||Unless you REALLY hate Murray||
||Even back in S1, Jonathan was always the weak link, and he's never gotten anything notable since||
5x6 ||lmaooo the classic "resolve a character arc to get out of a plot arc" moment||
ST S5 general ||I'm surprised that after episode 1, the jocks have done nothing||
||They had one purpose and then they disappeared from the plot||
what is everyone's favorite movie
same as aneonfox ||I think they were a s4 remnant that existed and then left the story||
Spiderverse
Have you watched One Piece
i don't think that falls under "movie" xD
I swear One Piece is the "have you read the Cosmere" of anime
ST 5x6 ||why did vecna need will to find max?||
||will doesnt have powers of his own and wasnt at the hospital||
||Will already knew Max was at the hospital||
Ahh right
||Vecna had no way to know her exact location until he got Will||
||so the hospital vision thing was just a visual representation of vecna getting the memory/information from will?||
||not him using will to search the real world||
That makes sense
5x6 ||lord how do these soldiers not know that lights flickering is a bad sign xD||
||I guess theres not going to be any hiding the upside down stuff after this||
||demogorgons just running around a hospital||
The film is an extremely effective coming of age story in an immersive fantasy esque setting
@oak ivy what did you not like about it
Dead Poet’s Society
Oh i need to watch that
It’s so good
ST 5x6 ||SERIOUSLY??? Are we leaving Holly in the mind dimension??||
||oh shes got the figurine||
Interesting
5x6 ||oml stop standing around GO||
The green knight ||i think gawain himself is pretty bland and all the themes are standard. I also think some of the surreal sequences dont really come together||
It’s about coming of age and the struggle of children against their high achieving parents in a boarding school that constrains and controls them.
In a lot of ways inspired the “dark academia” aesthetic
(Wasn’t the first, but definitely a big inspiration of the modern trope)
Also Robin Williams giving one of his best performances
prob something coen brothers
maybe fargo? idk
Final episode oming December 31?
Is there only one episode left after this batch?
Or is it another batch of 3
maybe the 2011 muppets movie tbh
I can honestly say that I don't have a favorite movie, I think i could pick a favorite for a given genre with some consideration
I can't meaningfully compare, for instance, Bladerunner 2049 with Mothlight
yeah fave movie is way harder than fave game or fave book lol
Some of my favorites: Dead Poet’s Society, Pride and Prejudice, Return of the Jedi, Return of the King
Mine are: Everything Everywhere All At Once, Stardust, The Princess Bride
On the animated fromt: Beauty and the Beast, End of Evangelion, and the Iron Giant
Princess bride is a good pick
I recently saw Flow. Really enjoyed it
Unsurprising I guess given that it one the oscar
||gawain is relatable rather than bland I’d say, he’s written to be a mirror to human weakness and the story ultimately affirms that weakness is okay and forgiveable if we try our best||
A movie that comes to mind which I am certain most people here haven't seen: The Conversation by Francis Ford Coppola. Stars Gene Hackman and is kind of like Uncut Gems but much slower paced if that makes any sense
The premise is a guy hears a fragment of a conversation and it drives him crazy
aw i was hoping the ping was about the film i actually talked about. not the single interjection i made into the gawain convo
You gawain crazy over the ping?
sigh
The Whale is a pretty brilliant movie.
Of stranger things?
yea
The hit 2010 cartoon network original movie Firebreather, why 🥴
What'd you think of it overall?
I've not seen 5x7 yet but I've started hearing some things and I'm curious how you found it
ST 5.6 ||man that was the episode of all time lol. Just some bizarre stuff happening. We're redefining the lore of the upside down again? Also all the slime was just so weird. And why is it completely melting through these stairways but this one room is able to hold all of it in a pool? And endnighthazer you took the words out of my mouth about the jonathan stuff. He's so boring, I couldn't tell you a single thing about him as a person||
5x6 ||I can tell you two things! He... used to like photos and he used to like drugs?||
||I don't mind the redefined lore of the upside down, but I'm gonna need a proper explanation at some point that im growing worried they won't deliver||
I quite enjoy it, but I'm also easy to impress
I have no major problems with the last episode
I only saw it once a few years ago but I loved City of God. Also love Alien, Zathura, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and the Intern
||proper explanation why? It’s obvious they’re just pulling this out of their behind lol
That’s the thing about fantasy, anything works if you want it to||
All right diving into episode 7
||well I want a proper explanation because I'm assuming there's some sort of logic of how everything we know about it fits together, and I'd like that to be clear. I admittedly wouldn't be surprised if there isn't one, but I'm choosing to hope it will all fit||
My favorite movie is still Nimona but I honestly don't have a ranking beyond that
||I wouldn’t hold my breath, seems like they’re only having these crazy “reveals” just for the sake of doing reveals, given that it’s the last season
Can’t have a final season without some mind bending reveal. Whether it makes sense or not||
||that doesn't seem unlikely. I don't expect much, but as soon as I know for sure there's not going to be one I'll like it a lot less, so I'm not letting myself rule it out until the end||
They ran out of ideas a while ago it seems to me
I don't know if I'd say they ran out of ideas so much as, ||if there's no proper explanation, they keep changing their ideas||
||we've gotten a few different "the upside down is actually x" reveals and if they don't fit together nicely it feels to me like they just had a new idea each season for what was actually going on||
ST 5.7 start ||how convenient that holly chose the perfect spot to fall from lol||
ST 5.7 ||"or me" cut the cringe guys||
ST 5.7 ||I think these episodes kinda weakened the season tbh||
I'm seeing the finale in theaters though so whether it's bad or not it should be fun
Wait it's getting theatre showings
??
Mad Max Fury Road
ST 5x7 start ||this is really nitpicky but I feel like both 5x6 and 5x7's opening scenes wouldve worked better at the end of the previous episode||
5x7 start ||lowkey has karen wheeler gotten more good scenes than mike this season? She might've||
||Im guessing holly/vecna are in the other dimension that is connected to earth by the upside-down?||
||oh my god are they still trapped in the paint goo room||
5x7 ||Oh my GOD people keep being unable to hear stuff that is CLEARLY spoken over the radios||
||like yes its broken up but dustin CLEARLY said "found her"||
||ok robin heard nvm shes the GOAT||
||Robin is the only person with working ears||
||She hasn't spent enough time with guns, with monsters all around, in the hell dimension||
||So her hearing hasn't gone yet||
Oh. Vecna is a Stranger Things character
Vecna is originally a D&D character
And he is also in Stranger Things
But he is not the same character
and he is also in the 17thShard
So he is
ST 5x7 ||its kind of funny just how many characters are involved in this now||
||there's like 20 people at this planning session||
I choose to believe ST means Star Trek
||i dont like how much guesswork this plan relies on, but also they cant really get the information I'd like||
||like, whats to say destroying the bridge doesnt further the collision? How do we know proximity will allow El into vecna's mind? how do we know the abyss approaching wont destroy the SQWK? But they cant really figure them out, I get it||
||what in the cult?||
||hopper's gonna kill a child?||
||god if el dies im gonna be pissed||
ST 5x7 ||is will being forced to come out so that vecna doesnt kill him???||
||everyone???||
||vecna hit will with the power of homophobia??||
||quota of 1 good jonathan scene per season has been met||
||xD why is murry here for this at all. And steve? Vickie? xD||
I have mixed feelings on vol2 and some worries for the finale
5x7 ||Mainly I feel like a lot of people are not getting enough development/screentime, and there's a lot of plotpoints & things I dont think we'll have time to resolve in the finale||
||I don't like that Will mainly seems to have come out out of fear||
||I worry we won't have enough time to actually explain the upside down and all||
||I'm gonna be really unhappy if el dies||
||and I worry Mike (and sorta joyce) will get nothing to do at all this season||
||but I did like some of the emotional moments we got, I am interested in some of the lore we've gotten, and I do think there's some interesting themes going on with henry/el/brenner/will||
ST all ||i also just... don't really care for Henry as a villain. I feel like he's both too much and too little. A (imo too) complicated backstory but he feels very bland||
Finished Pluribus S1 ||Deeply underwhelming, especially for a finale. I find myself incredibly disappointed that this is apparently Apple's most watched show because it's just so... empty. Not just the literal emptiness of the scenes and settings (though there is a lot of that that's there on purpose) but just there is not enough character or plot here to sustain interest, and I feel like I'm going to keep getting strung along with promises that something interesting might happen at some point in the future if I keep watching. I don't think I'm going to come back for season 2||
Pluribus s1 ||Did they reveal anything interesting about the hive mind's plans?||
||or like, anything interesting at all?||
It is so bizarre to me that Severance activates the general public's Lost hackles when Pluribus feels like it has so much more in common in terms of just refusing to answer any questions ever
Is pluribus a victim of 9 episode syndrome
The general public noticeably compares Severance to Lost more than it compares Plurbius to Lost?
I am surprised Lost is even still in the public consciousness
I've seen many comparisons between Severance and Lost and none between Pluribus and Lost
When s2 of Severance was airing I kept seeing people who were like "I watched [1-4 episodes] of Severance and it reminded me too much of Lost so I'm out"
JJ Abrams traumatized a generation
JJ is one of the most influential directors of all time (derogatory)
Millenials when confronted with an opaque premise: "omg this is just like Lost"
Zoomers when confronted with an opaque premise: "this reminds me of an Hbomberguy video about Lost"
Gen alpha: idk tiktok or something
Gen alpha doesn’t watch TV wtf
Lost absolutely has transcended what it actually was to become a shorthand for "show that makes a lot of promises and makes the viewer ask a lot of questions, avoids doing anything with those promises and questions far longer than makes sense within the constraints of the story, and then what it finally does deliver sucks and is bad and not well thought through"
Pluribus is a victim of a premise not explored beyond what could have been done in a single epp of something like dr who
I believe gen alpha is a big part of why Stranger Things is having its best season to date
Somehow
I've been using X-Files as my touchstone for this because Vince Gilligan used to write for that show, but yeah same basic idea. You could throw in The Twilight Zone as well
How much of this is just that Gilligan shows decompress stories like crazy so everything is just really slow scenes on the way to something happening
I will call it my own skill issue that BB was too slow for me, but it seems like that is the trend
Like slowness of story progression as a direct result of just, lingering in scenes and hemming and hawing constantly
The pilot is the only thing that happens this season
Yaa x files fits better
And that certainly is not true of the first season of Breaking Bad despite it getting cut short by the 2008 writer's strike
Even like a 2 part xfiles or twilight zone epp could have done such a better job of this exact premise
Im so sad that pluribus didn't live up to the 1st 2 epps of the show
This kinda "mystery box" as I believe he called it technique is so frustrating and annoying, it's such lazy writing. It's the ponzi scheme of storytelling, great at stringing people along right until the whole house of cards comes crumbling down and the whole thing blows up in everyone's faces except the guy who's already run away with all the praise and accolades.
Mhmm
ST s5e6 || Bruh. They have completely lost the sauce ||
Its too bad that somehow Severance of all shows has been left holding that bag too because it is so aggressive about engaging with its own questions
I haven't yet watched Severance but I think this kinda trust once broken is very hard to rebuild.
Unless you're Vince Gilligan I guess
the fact that ya'll sound pretty disappointed with Pluribus suggests otherwise
Well, its AppleTV's most watched show already
So people-not-us are apparently really enjoying it
I think stuff have happened in this season, and we have progressed in the concept and characters and etc, but this is a case where 6 eps seems to be extended to 9
Slowness feels to be padding than deliberately used to tell us visually about the world or the characters or to have any interesting philosophical conversation
The slowest ep this season was || Manousos || [Pluribus] and that was my favorite one cuz it felt deliberate to build the character and || show us how the world in macro level has been running after hivemind takeover ||
this season of pluribus reminds me of the left overs first season, just executed a lot worse
tbh ppl had similar criticisms of bcs in the s1-3 days to ppls criticisms of pluribus rn
Pluribus season 1 ||the "big reveal" of the finale is the thing everybody guessed back in like episode 5 or whichever one it was when the hive mind revealed they need stem cells to make a special version of the virus for the immune: that they can use Carol's stem cells from the eggs she froze (mentioned in episode 3 I think?) to make her a special virus without her consent. And the show was so cowardly about this plot point, despite the fact that it's SO EMPTY of content, they still reminded viewers in episode 9 about the frozen eggs before they later did the reveal that that's how they're getting the stem cells 😩 ||
It's so lame!
Im just so dissapointed in it. I was expecting something as good as severance
Thank god I am not the only one negative on Pluribus
in the places I am active the most, literally everyone is liking it so so much
I like the version of Pluribus I'm getting from the reactions and meta on Tumblr
I like it, and I love the premise and will watch season 2. I just am dissapointed in how they did it
I liked the premise, but its very less good moments padded out across 9 episodes for me
There's so much more they could have done outside of this like "you have to dig deep to get any meaning out of it, and we hid so much meaning in all the little things." Its just atmospheric annoyances cause I see it all but nothing happens
I think Pluribus is fine so far
Pluribus all ||The show's premise offers so much but Gilligan seems content to let us linger on scenes of Carol opening doors, doing random mundane crap, dollar store detective work, tediously recording messages to the others with her stupid camcorder in a world of smartphones....
Hell, the show wastes so much time they make us listen to that answering machine message from the hive at least 8 times in full with no cuts.
It's like wtf are we doing here||
Pluribus All ||The fact that at no point does Carol ask to have the voicemail message shortened is a little infuriating||
||I don't she's self aware enough to listen to it as punishment||
Exactly, making her listen to it is one thing but why are we subjected to it tens of times? It's like he wants to piss us off
unrelated, Pluribus All ||At the pacing of this show, the ending of S1 is basically "WE HAVE YOUR EGGS" Smash Cut to a Nuke. you either
or you
||
Pluribus all ||what'd you guys think of the HDP revelation? In the last ep when Carol writes on the board "They. Eat. People." I involuntarily scoffed and said to the TV "Grow up Carol"||
That annoys me too. Pluribus all || the show wants to force you to pay attention to all the little things. Then one of the more obvious things they said earlier in the season is played off as this big reveal. When anyone fully engaging with the TV show was talking about it for a while||
Stranger Things S5 full ||https://www.ign.com/articles/stranger-things-duffer-brothers-first-told-netflix-about-the-big-season-5-reveal-before-season-1-even-came-out||
@distant birch @agile drift
If this is true they apparently planned it lmao
||They don't even eat all people, they eat dead people. It's not like they're zombies going around eating brains, or cannibals firing up the bbq||
hm. if that's the case i feel like they dropped the ball on properly setting that up in the show
Oh yeah I need to continue pluribus at some point
Pluribus all ||It feels like such an empty, vibes-based show for so much of its runtime, lots of spectacle, very little substance. The actual plot and developments of it are paper thin and predictable. I want there to be interesting questions about the hive mind and why they're like this but they kind of just feel manufactured to be lame. They're all happy but they're slowly starving to death and they don't want to accomplish anything other than sending a signal of the virus into space and converting the immune. The story doesn't have anything to really reveal about what's going on because it feels like we kind of know all the things going on and even the "secrets" they revealed were extraordinarily guessable. There's not enough characters to keep this thing character driven, but there's not really enough of anything else to sustain it either, imo :/||
I was very happy to ride along and see if they stuck the landing
-# they did not stick the landing
the scary part about pluribus is they keep talking about it reaching 4 seasons
I don't know what this is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpgoDiYKBLM but I am pretty sure it's the child of Arcane and either Tangled or Coraline (or maybe all three)

I kept seeing headlines about the finale with words like (pluribus) ||Pluribus' big reveal, or the big betrayal in the last episode of Pluribus and I actually got my hopes up that they did something 😩 ||
||The real big betrayal was the script we heard along the way||
I feel like the media literacy crisis is being pulled into pluribus stuff. In the online discourse when its totally unrelated
Like im reading into and seeing all the stuff they are doing. Like I get it all the atmospheric character development and all of the sitting with things
There ofc dumb ppl arguing dumb stuff about it all but I just think its poorly executed
We are definitely in a media literacy crisis
I’ve seen so many people read things in bad faith in shows and movies I’ve liked
And I literally have to sit them down and explain “no, they literally didn’t intend for you to read it like that”
we might be a little worse off in a few things compared to a few years ago due to factors like the pandemic
but i have to wonder what people think media literacy was like in the 2010s
or the 00s
or the 90s etc
i don't think we lived in a time where people were very conscious and analytical in how they consumed stories
I think it’s just social media amplifying a lot of bad media literacy
We live in a time where we’re subjected to everyone’s takes
As somebody who spends a LOT of time in the comic community, I’m subjected to bad media literacy CONSTANTLY
But it’s gotten better since I’ve been cutting out a lot of social media
remember how breaking bad viewers HATED skylar
I'm ngl I have nothing to back this up but I wouldn't be shocked if social media encourages bad takes, even if you don't believe in them
do you think there's a prior decade in recent memory
where that would have been better and not worse
Because simple bad takes probably get lots of engagement and activity
Don’t remind me
Please

When I watched BB for the first time I had a friend who had already watched it who HATED Skylar, and when I told him I actually didn’t mind her and thought a lot of what she did was valid, he looked at me like I had two heads
Im not saying that we arent
Skylar is a classic case of people who don’t think too hard about media just siding with POV characters implicitly
Walter is the main character and POV focus so therefore anyone that questions or disagrees with his decisions must be horrible, is their subconscious train of thought
Just that I dont think media literacy is the issue with pluribus
Oh no, I’m just saying my thoughts about media literacy
I wasn’t disagreeing with you
Apologies if it came off that way
and also hating women but the fact that walter is the one who gets to be the protagonist itself exists in the context of gender
Yeah the misogyny also can’t be ignored
Representative of trends in TV and movies in general of female characters having less interiority and agency than male ones
there's an interesting paper i read about that hang on
Not that breaking bad is necessarily actively misogynistic just that it’s a product of US culture which is misogynistic
i thought this was an interesting look at how morally dubious male protagonists are usually able to get audiences to root for them and ally with them, but that rarely happens with morally dubious female protagonists https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:e2b847eb-0c54-4ccd-badd-b9faa01a4c57/download_file?safe_filename=Clavel-Vazquez_2017_sugar_and_spice_and_everything_nice_what.pdf&type_of_work=Journal+article
the point i thought was especially interesting was how flawed female protagonists tend to still exist in relation to gender norms, having strong motherly instincts, being femme fatales, or being survivors of sexual violence
There's also things like how I met your mother and big bang theory that are deeply misogynistic in their premises and throughout the shows
Interesting
I’ll read this after dinner
Totally my statement was more for the lurkers than you specificly
I think this is fairly well known by now, to paraphrase:
- bad / provocative takes get more responses than good / tepid takes ("someone is wrong on the internet")
- social media algorithms promote content with more engagement
- you're mostly going to see the content with hotter takes
- you're conditioned to prefer to write things in a more provocative way, partly because that's what everything you're reading looks like, and partly because Number Go Up
For me it all comes from the fact that its an attention economy so what humans devote more time to attention wise will always get more content. Just by the nature of our lizard brains we focus on bad things and remember them more
Agreed
I’ve said this a million times, but my life got infinitely more better when I deleted Twitter and cut out social media
Now I just focus on what I like
I've caught myself doing it here, phrasing my opinion a certain way because I know it will get more react emotes
(generally aiming for positive emotes like
, so it's a little better than being as polarising as possible at all times)
In the 90s I think there was a clearer distinction for what kind of stuff warranted what kind of discussion
Like in the extreme example kids cartoons wouldn't merit media literacy discourse because there wasnt really discussion of it outside of maybe some academia circles
In the case of Plurbius, I dont think prestige tv was even a thing in the 90s. Were there nonepisodic tv shows that were discussed at water coolers then?
They actually cooked with these concepts https://x.com/i/status/2005030536277086526
Twin Peaks immediately comes to mind
Erm, technically that was the 00s ☝️ 🤓
Lonesome dove was 89
Huh, weird Wikipedia had the wrong dates in the preview
Oh, it was previewing the DVD release
Based on the cancelation I guess it wasnt really suited for the 1990s TV landscape
If it was being release today I think it would be canclled
Twin Peaks is a deeply weird show
Would it have even needed to be canceled?
Twin Peaks today would have lots of season 2s filler cut out which would make it a better show
Doing just two seasons of a show to tell the story you wanted to is perfectly acceptable now in a way I dont think it was in the 90s
oh it got like...actively sabotaged by inane executive meddling
The cancelation to me appears to be due to Lynch fitting a square peg into a round hole
The square peg being a long form non episodic story and the round hole being network television in the 90s
To sum up a long story i'll definitely remember names wrong in: An executive thought audiences wouldn't watch a long-form mystery so they made Lynch reveal the core mystery of the show really early...ratings tanked afterwards
I do think there's a difference between "Netflix kills unfinished shows after two seasons as a matter of course" and "two seasons is a normal thing that audiences want"
I counter with "Andor"
There are Andors and Mindhunters
I doubt that. David Lynch liked filler
In fact, there was a good deal of buzz a couple of years ago about how studios were shopping their shows to Netflix less often and usually as a last resort because they don't like working with that kind of instability
Mindhunter was cancelled
Andor is one in a million
the main change to twin peaks is that the reveal of who killed Laura Palmer who’ve taken longer because forcing it into season 1 was studio meddling
Yes... my point is there are 2 season shows on purpose and there are ones by chance
Otherwise I think the story would’ve been largely the same
Completed with that *****ing mopey biker boy James who made the 10 minutes per episode he was on screen feel like a ******ing eternity
If he'd been allowed to make it the way he planned it would have been drastically different anyways
An intended two season show is really quite rare. I can't even think of another example in the last ten years other than Andor
Like, the way s2 went down is so specific to...quick google search Bob Iger being a massive moron
And there's so much else that makes Andor a rare bird that using it as an example of what's what's working these days just doesn't land for me
We must kill Bob iger for this and other crimes such as Disney’s latest round of slop
Need a "Don't get the server subpoenaed" emote here
The stark reality is that he is still the better Bob
Fleabag
Fleabag, which was unusual enough that Phoebe Waller-Bridge kept getting asked Seinfeld style why she was walking away from a successful show? That Fleabag?
short tv shows are (were) unusual because TV execs HATE the idea of a successful brand name stopping
netflix is in a weird place because they want NEW NEW NEW to sell more subscriptions, not same old same old to keep existing ones
but then as mentioned the writers are selling ideas to all parties, so there's multiple incentives being followed
They're also unusual because production studios don't like spinning up for 2-3 year projects. Sets and props and contracts that can be reused for years are a better value proposition
Yes, the one which I think is an example of what you were trying to think of
Artists with the freedom to often end thing when they want to rather then when its commercially run its course
I made my brother watch Pluribus and now he shares all our frustrations
Skip watched most of it cuz of all the dead air lol
Just watched the new blue avatar movie and all have to say is it was bloody brilliant
He did it again
hot take: This wasnt that bad of a take you were meant to hate skyler
That was always crazy to me. Imagine your s/o starts killing ppl and comes home pretending everything’s normal lol
Skylar was always meant to be an obstacle to Walt but I wouldn’t say the viewer was supposed to hate her
That is one of the weirder things you have said
Can you delve deeper into why you think we were ment to hate skylar
Because I truly dont understand how we get to "the audience was ment to hate her"
S1 especially shes depicted as being very much a caricature of a suburban american life wife while walt breaks out of that caricature by the end of episode one
You say Lost, but my mind went to X-Files too. There's a reason this trope got nicknamed the "Chris Carter Syndrome".
At least, on TV Tropes.
Why does that mean we should hate her?
Why is not breaking out of her caricature showing us as the audience that we should hate her?
Skylar has the most reasonable reaction to all the stuff that happens, i don't get what's hateable about that
Exactly
I just dont understand kris's reasoning for saying that the show is trying to tell us that we should hate her
Im so confused by it
first season is the best imo but its pretty solid its a nice action mystery
ehhh shes nowhere near as bad as most of the rest of the cast but by the end shes a horrible persom
What would you guys say the difference is between existential horror and cosmic horror? 🤔
Or are they nested categories?
My totally vibes based no research first-thought answer is that I would class something as existential horror if it deals with existential themes, cosmic horror if it deals with things of a cosmic "scale", and both if they overlap
So happy to see someone else watching it
Cosmic horror is about the insignificance of humanity in the vast, insurmountable, indifferent world with entities which define our sense of normalcy and are incomprehensible
While existential horror is about absurdity, meaninglessness of life
You would be correct
A huge overlap would be between Lovecraftian horror and Cosmic Horror tho
and almost Lovecraftian horror is subset of Cosmic horror
I mean, I see the two used basically interchangeably a lot of the time
TADC ep 3 ||Kinger is kinda goated omg
||
Avengers Doomsday leak ||https://www.reddit.com/r/MCUTheories/comments/1pxnhlz/avengers_doomsday_xmen_teaser_leaked_video/||
||Finally, the classic X-Men suit😭||
ah, a new one
honestly the quality is so bad it's not worth watching, I'd just wait for the official drop in, I'd guess a few days?
I'm guessing a little over a week
based on how long it took for the Steve teaser to release officially
I thought they said something like one per week, and the first one was released last Tuesday or something?
To me this whole "show it in theaters only" thing with the teasers feels like purely a marketing ploy to try and generate hype so people actually remember the MCU exists. Which is working I suppose?
Perhaps that's too pessimistic of me but idk, just reeks of trying too hard.
I'm not sure this thing is running in theaters currently? I know the first one did, but I'm not sure about this one
Interesting. I thought that was how they were "leaking".
It's really a great marketing strategy
the first one also leaked before it was in a theater
and yeah be salty if you like, but marketing gonna market
If it had only been the Steve Rogers trailer, the topic would only have been talked about for a week
I'm guessing they're trying to just preserve a sense of mystery before the marketing blitz begins in earnest in the summer or something, right around spider-man
Releasing a trailer every week is something I've never seen before. Maybe it's nothing new, but it's working really well for Marvel
and then they'll start showing the entire movie in the trailer, as is tradition
I mean, the fact that we're talking about a movie with such fervor a year before its release says something lol
I think there is some momentum to try and reestablish the theater as an event considering everyone just waits for streaming
that reminds me, I currently have disney+, I should probably watch some of those movies I skipped
Should you?
no way to know unless I do
I didn't only skip unpopular ones, though, like I haven't seen Thunderbolts yet and people seemed to mostly like that one
There’s some that are worth watching
Thunderbolts is 100% worth it
I really liked it
I know I saw Multiverse of Madness, Shang Chi, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man, and I'd venture to guess there are one or two other Marvel movies I've seen in the past 5 years but may have forgotten them
a couple are coming to mind as I think of it, but yeah I've skipped most of them
Shang Chi reminds me alot to an anime, iits agood movie
I've tried twice and just never enjoyed that one
I have to say I'd like to see X-Men First Generation, but the 2000s ones are great, especially seeing Ian Mackellen
Yeah so the Thor teaser will be this week, and ||X-Men|| will be next week
"Any publicity is good publicity" is not actually true and I think the consistently bungled marketing of Doomsday has probably done more harm than good at this point
Ever since that bizarre chair stunt like a year ago at this point lmao
Iunno, this marketing SNAFU has reminded me that there's a movie coming out that I'm not planning to watch
this was so weird lmao
What chair stunt?
oh god the livestream of like...20 chairs
It was a really slow pan that took like actual two Earth hours to go down a row of chairs that had the actors' names on them
So?
(well, probably not "live" stream)
Not gonna watch Doomsday
I don't know what harm you think it may have done
Makes them look like a bunch of buffoons
I am opposed to chair related videos on principle
Reinforces the idea that Marvel has lost their touch
TBH, I suspect stunts like that are an attempt to remind people that the movie exists and will be coming out.
You, someone that's already made up their mind, aren't the target, only the medium.
from where I'm standing, it's the kind of thing that people who are heavily invested are even aware of, whether that's invested in loving it or invested in hating it, and hating it has become an entire YouTube enterprise
that there is the trick
the video wasn't the marketing
Kon talking about it is
Me saying "Marvel has cringe marketing" is not marketing lmao
No, but you saying "Marvel's Doomsday advertising campaign has been cringe" is
You remind people who don't have this flesh deep negativity in them that the movie exists
No
It isn't
I don't have any particular animosity towards Marvel
Calling a spade a spade isn't marketing
The target isn't even people that are on the fence. It's people that have forgotten that there's a fence to be on.
Everyone knows there's a fence
you can't say that about every franchise
Not everybody. Not the vast majority of movie goers (who they want to reach and who they will reach)
I wouldn’t be surprised if Doomsday is a massive financial success
Most people who will end up seeing the movies hadn't heard of Secret Wars or Doomsday before the chairs stream
There's nothing Marvel can do to make me interested in a new Avengers
That's not true for me, thought they have to work a good deal harder than they did in 2019, that's for sure
Alas I will be in theater seats opening night to view the train wreck or the hype
In large part because so many Marvel projects in that time period have been mid or worse
I liked Daredevil and Shang-chi and that might actually be it in that entire time period
who flinches first for the imax screenings, dune or doomsday?
I suppose No Way Home was alright but that runs into a potent combo of "I don't like Toby" and "Into the Spider-verse did it better"
Probably Doomsday?
Well, I suppose if it turns out for it to be good enough for very positive word-of-mouth I'd consider it. That worked with Fantastic Four. I just don't think that will happen with Doomsday
I think Dune has already indicated they intend to move
just figuring out exactly when
have they? the last thing i remember was warner bros saying they weren't moving
I don't remember where I heard it so I can't say for certain but they're not likely to win that contest if they stand pat
Dunesday
they might give it a try but part of Barbenheimer to me was just the contrast between the two entirely different movies and entirely different audiences
Yeah
idk if anyone will ever be able to replicate Barbenheimer
But the name does write itself
Also WB owned both of those so they could control theater stuff
Directly competing with another company trying to control theater stuff is a different beast
marvel is doing everything to make me as least interested in doomsday as possible
its incredible lmao
Yeah, i was already at a low interest level, but then the cap teaser killed it completely
The Thor trailer sounds interesting enough that maybe ill watch some clips from it or catch it on streaming
its just them focusing on steve rogers instead of sam 😭
setting up new charactesr just to not use them is
incredible
It’s such a comic book thing to do
Yeah, I feel like Sam's been replaced by Steve at least twice in the comics
okay so the MCU arent comic books
Not even Marvel exclusive, DC changes flagship heroes then changes them back constantly
and also this is one of the worst parts about marvel and DC
I don’t think there’s an argument you can make that’s going to make this bother me tbh, because that’s basically how I see them
Is it good when the comics do it?
It is appropriate for the format and the franchise. If I wanted a story that didn’t do it, I would look elsewhere. I would not want Dick Grayson to be a permanent Batman
See, I guess for me one thing I liked about the mcu was the meta character arcs. And this kind of thing feels like backtracking
It’s absolutely backtracking. It’s ’we tried something new, we failed, let’s have one big party and throw out the rules before we start over in 2028++
Exactly how I see it
Tbf it's not like Sam's even had a proper chance to be cap
I don't going back to Steve after a while, but sam got like... half a series and 1 movie of questionable quality
Best way this turns out is both are Cap in the movie. Prob not gonna happen tho.
I don't mind him (or any of the new cast) not being permanent, but it feels like they backtracked before they even had a chance to settle in
He got a series and a movie, and while they certainly weren’t Marvel’s best I just don’t know if the third chance would have been better
I do find it interesting that the trailer said “STEVE ROGERS will return” and not “CAPTAIN AMERICA will return”
Just a thought
That’s another thing, it’s entirely possible Steve will try to back up Sam
Admittedly I don't think they'll bring him back as cap
I think he's just gonna be Steve
It is hard to say definitely that they are doing something in the movie one way or the other on anything. We kinda have to ride the wave. I for one am intrigued to see a massive epic or enormous trainwreck, whichever it might be.
Pretty much how I feel, just go with it, if Doomsday sucks I won’t watch Secret Wars
i am excited to not see the massive epic or enormous trainwreck
I think I just dislike that the first thing they market is Steve being back, because no matter what role he plays its just showing them backtracking to familiar things they know will work
Which... I kinda get it, you wanna promote the film. But it feels like a show of how little confidence they have in anything they've done recently
I'm so excited to see what they do with dune 3
See, I'm weird in I'm not watching either
. Dune has a lot of cool moments, but is too dark for my tastes
People on this server are saying that Doomsday marketing is making people less interested. I wonder if there is literally any evidence to back that up, at all?
If you don’t like Marvel that’s fine, but I think y’all will be surprised if you think the general audience is rejecting this
I've gotta say I don't actually mind the chair stream
The chair stream was objectively great marketing. Made sure they dominated the conversation for an entire day
I also wouldn't be surprised if there is a decent chunk of general audiences who don't have the same negative reaction to the Steve trailer
Views and likes on the Steve trailer seem to indicate that this is the case
It's also like... it's optional, it was a one day thing, it went up on yt after in short form, and it didn't have any major plot content in it
I don't really see any harm in them announcing the cast in a bit of a funky way
I do wonder how much of the general audience even cares or knows about things like nostalgia bait or Sam's arc or whatnot. Are they following the mcu closely enough to care? Or is it just a cool face you remember liking
I think they may have done things that feed the hate-tubing industry but as far as having a measurably negative impact, I severely doubt it.
That said I don’t think Doomsday’s success is assured. I don’t know how to measure success for this movie but I wouldn’t be shocked if it did, like, 800 million and gets labeled a disaster for not reaching a billion
And I don’t honestly know how Disney would actually feel about that
Just watched La Chimera
Not the best film ive ever seen however its the kind of film that makes me want to re-rate a lot of other films ive seen because they dont feel better than that
Does anyone know a website or something where I can find episode by episode content warnings for a show?
Judging by how they're running their marketing campaign, I think they need more than 1 billion
I think that’s perfectly plausible that it’s their goal
I think they're waiting for the 2 billion
I think they’re probably self aware enough to know that much is unlikely
Hmm, actually Infinity War did a little more than that amount
DoesTheDogDie and Common Sense Media
...iirc
If they manage to get people to come back for the same reason that made them go to the movies in 2018 and for the X-Men with Deadpool combining both parts
A lot has changed since then, the China market is basically gone for one…. They have no serious chance of reaching their peaks again
so common sense doesnt have the episode breakdowns but dtdd does
Maybe ,I'm just trying to gauge their expectations, Deadpool and Wolverine are in the top 22
dtdd website is a little funky on functionality unfort
Thanks! Ill check them out
i love kinger
common sense also sucks and is run by horrible people
DTDD isnt run by horrendous people who use there influence forh orrible thing sthough
What did common sense do? /gen
lobbied for censorship a couple times
Ah
DTDD is such a good website though bc they put trigger warnings for bigoted stereotypes etc which si great for watching any comedy produced before like 2015 lmao
It's making me less interested at least
. But probably not overall
Watched Sing Sing. A really quality movie, very emotional. Interesting experience bc i volunteer in a prison, and i think it does a good job of communicating the heart of those programs
Also really excellent performances from actors playing themselves
Crazy acting in it too
Im not sure ive seen Colman Domingo in anything before but he was soooo good
And I was pretty gobsmacked at the end when I realised a lot of characters were playing themselves
I teared up a little bit during the film
It looks so good too, maybe someday Ill get to watch it at the cinema
hmm
The best movie I watched this year would be..
I only remember watching 3 movies
Superman
Zootopia 2
Avatar Fire and Ash
hmmm
Still havent seen Sinners
havent even heard of sinners
I don't have anything to add but I second all of this
Wait, did I watch Look Back this year or last year 🤔
Google says it was last year cool
I dont have to pick and winner between Look Back and Sing Sing for favorite film this year, that might have been impossible
My 3 favourites/best of this year are Sinners, Superman, and Wake Up Dead Man
I slept through Zootopia 2. Tbh I only watched it because I missed the taste of popcorn
I guess... Avatar Fire and Ash..? I didn't really love it though
-# Sinners gets my stamp of "best", Superman of "favourite", WUDM is second in both
Although my favourite is pretty much a tie between a few xD
Sinners is easily my favorite
Wake Up Dead Man and Superman are definitely up there too
Superman got me into comics so it gets a lot of points from me
Even if it wasn't the best movie of the year, it clicked with me enough to introduce me to a whole new medium basically xD
WUDM I really liked and might be even higher if it had been out longer
I've gotta get my hands on the DVD so I can rewatch it
Did nosferatu come out this year? Or was that a late late 2024 release
Other 2025 releases I thought were pretty good:
- Predator Badlands
- Fantastic Four First Steps
- Thunderbolts*
- K-Pop Demon Hunters
I don't think I disliked any new releases this year that I saw
They were all enjoyable. Though I do tend to enjoy most things
My 5 favorite releases of 2025 have to be:
• Sinners
• Superman
• The Long Walk
• Weapons
• K-Pop Demon Hunters
In no particular order
I think Frankenstein, One Battle After Another, and F4FS would be a little on the lower end of my list, with KDH, Thunderbolts* and the chainsawman movie in the middle
Oh yeah Frankenstein was another good one. Knew I was forgetting something
My top 5 would probably be:
Sinners
Superman
Wake Up Dead Man
Nosferatu (if that was a 2025 release?)
KDH
And maybe csm if nosferaru wasn't this year
-# in no order
I honestly could switch out KDH with Frankenstein or Thunderbolts but I liked KDH more than them
I liked Frankenstein but I feel like it didn't work quite as well as the book did, so I'm ranking it lower because I don't quite have the same excitement about it as some other releases
How "Now You See Me / Now You Don't" wasn't the title of the second movie (or, perhaps, just Now You Don't) is one of the more baffling decisions of our time
Obviously the idea was kicked around at some point, they used it for the third movie
Also, why they decided to franchise this of all things is another, almost unrelated baffling decision of our time
Were people asking for more of that?
It somehow has brand recognition
It over doubled its budget
So it at least broke even
Sure but the decision to franchise it feels like it has the weight of corporate soullessness pushing it forward and not much else
If you guys think Superman was something, just wait till Supergirl tbh
If they just adapt the comic the that movie genuinely has a good chance to be legendary
I worry my expectations are too high because of the comic xD
But supergirl will very likely be my #2 movie of next year
I think I liked KDH the most this year now that I think about it
I’m excited but I’m definitely keeping my expectations low
I’m going in just expecting a fun space adventure that has emotional story beats
I'm trying to reset my hype after the teaser
I think some of the visuals from the comic had me hyped for a movie on that level visually, and so I was a little disappointed by it
My top 5 of the year is just Sinner 5 times
Shush
But the actual trailer content was solid, so I'm trying to just go back to being excited for a solid space adventure, like you said
I have not had the bare minimum as a DC fan in decades, let me have the bare minimum smh
oh its that guy from black panther
Nonetheless supergirl will probably be my second favourite of next year, to dune 3
Dune 1 and 2 holds a special place in my heart
I watched both of them with someone I loved on the same day, and it was one of the 2 most happiest days of my life
I hope next year is a stronger one than this year. Thinking back there wasn’t much that really blew me away this year
Which guy are you talking about?
Sinner
2026 is LOADED with movies tbh
Ryan coogler(sp?)?
Micheal B Jordan
My prediction for 2026 is dune 3>supergirl>>>spiderman>>>odyssey>>>>doomsday
Wait spiderman is next year?
Oh and the new hunger games will probably be alright so maybe throw that in above odyssey
I haven’t been too aware of what’s coming out next year. Didn’t know doom 3 or doomsday or Spider-Man were next year. Knew about odyssey.
Saw a trailer for disclosure day and that looked interesting.
Was hyped for the ATLA movie but… yeah…
I could be wrong but I think so
I sill be stunned if that is good
Tbh I'm not that excited for movies anymore. I'm more excited for video games and books
Oh I liked nosferatu so I might like the Robert eggers werwulf
I’m ready for 2027 and spiderverse 3
There's quite a few things I recognise coming out 2026, though I'm not super hyped for all of them
2027 with spiderverse, batman 2, and man of tomorrow is gonna be crazyyy for me
Spider man Holland 4 is summer and Doomsday is Winter
I should finish Batman one day maybe
I don’t think Spider Verse has a firm date yet
That seems to be a franchise in development hell
-# really the 2026 release I'm most excited for is Interview with the vampire s3
I don’t think I’ve seen Holland Spider-Man 3
Ehhh I think the second movie took a while to make too? 2027 was dated for the movie a few years back. I imagine it’ll hit the date
Absolutely sucks that the ATLA movie isn’t getting a theatrical release
Tbh I think the spider verse franchise isn't in hell so much as they were just far too optimistic initially
There’s a lot of work that goes into the spiderverse movies and it really shows. They can take their sweet time imo
It was originally dated as like a year after the second, which was said to be absurd since they had made no real progress on it, spending all their time in the second
No way BTSV was meant to come out like... was it 6 months-a year after ATSV?
Point is they’ve had fake dates before and I’m not inclined to believe a date for that movie until they say it’s actually ready
Yeah the original date for a year after was a bad call
I literally laughed to myself when I saw that in the theater, I remember looking to my friend and said “No way they make that release date”
Yeah I was so pumped to hit that on a midnight release
Apparently 2026 has the clayface movie??
I think the studio wanted them to work on the two simultaneously but the first sequel was such an effort
Now watching The Glassworker!
And it was worth it because it was great, but still
2027 has minecraft 2 xD
Btw if the DCU Batcave doesnt have a giant penny and dinosaur then I don’t want it
2027 is definitely plausible at least, I hope they manage it
So I see a tentative June 25th, 2027 for spiderverse
Still a year and a half away so it’ll be a while before we know for sure
Four years is at least theoretically enough time to make a movie like that
Can’t believe the amount of people who think the giant penny comes from two-face, so I have to sit them down and explain “so there’s this guy named Penny Plunderer….”
I'm ngl part of me wasn't sure if it came from a villain or was just something Bruce had for some reason
Yeah. I don’t care how long it takes tbh. I just want it to live up to the first 2 movies
Who plunders pennies?
Look, it was the Golden Age ok
His whole thing is that he’s just really obsessed with Pennies
I honestly want him to make a comeback with the recent news that the U.S. won’t be making Pennies anymore
||Sex scene on the giant penny? ||
And is canonically in hell
Watched goonies for the first time tonight. The way people talk about it I thought it must be one of the absolute greats of the 80s but I didn't care for it at all. I think it might be one of those ones that you have to have enjoyed as a kid first before enjoying it as an adult
I JUST opened up Discord
I've never gotten the Goonies love
Its enormously influential and I can't for the life of me figure out why
Mid feels like a bit of a compliment
so much 80s media be like
My dad made me watch it when I was younger (alongside a couple other movies he loved when he was my age), and its definitely the one that stuck with me the least
(The others being Aliens and Starship Troopers, both of which I wanna watch again some time, because I was barely attention through either of them. Goonies though... I just don't care)
oh, love those
at least with DC you dont have to worry about synergy with movies affecting comics
vc the movies are ass but hey at least theres a positive to that
At what age did you watch it?
My 80s movie was definitely Teen Wolf 😂
Like 10-12ish I think
And The Outsiders but that doesn't count since im obsessed with the book
mine was return of the jedi
I never liked the goonies tbh
Outsiders will have the stink of me being forced to watch it in school
One of my favorite movies is live action Cinderella and I'm not even joking
oh my god yes ive jsut never gotten why people like it
ive always assuemd it was just it inspired so much media that it seems unoriginal because it was so influential
I assume people like it because of either nostalgia or because they're a fan of 80s campiness but both of those require a modern day perspective so I'm not sure what the selling point would have been when it came out
it was a movie kids liked cause it was about kids being kids and going on an adventure
any1 watch culinary class wars?
My sister still loves it because she was just a couple years yonger than those kids ages when it came out and grew up with all that culture and all that stufff. Its simular to the Harry potter stuff for a lot of millennials who were simular ages to the cast. Kids your age going on adventures and the culture at school talking about it all the time has lasting cultural impact
Love it
First trailer for the ‘MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE’ sequel series
Releasing April 10 on Hulu
legacy sequels legacy sequels we all love legacy sequels
I think the justified one is the only legacy sequel I didn’t hate on sight
And that’s because it was only 7 years post finale
malcom in the middle's finale came out in 2018?
No Justified the tv show had a sequel called prime evil that came out 7 years after the first show ended. And that’s the only sequel I didn’t hate on sight.
Malcom in the middle ended mid 2000s
Okay so milking legacy sequels is bad
But there is something funny about Cranston going back to comedy now
He’s probs bored and they gave him a big check
Dude has to do something between dodgers games after all
he's done a few comedies after Breaking Bad
I've never been opposed to them making 'legacy sequels', if that's what we're going to call them, but I also very rarely actually watch them
someone's gotta watch them if they're gonna keep making them, but also they don't usually seem to last long
Wait, releasing <date> on Hulu? Wikipedia said the reboot was for Disney+...
(also 4 episodes, originally planned to be a movie)
Ah, Hulu and D+ are some level of entangled...
Interestingly enough, from what little research I've done, it looks like Cranston might've been the driving force behind getting this to happen
Cranston is a really good comedy actor
I am now going through his filmography and he was a bit character in two episodes of the power rangers
Also he was in this episode of the xfiles which got him his drug lord role https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drive_(The_X-Files)
I’m just finding out the European versions of demolition man dub over Taco Bell with Pizza Hut
This is going on my top 10 reason to hate Europe
speaking as a lifelong UK resident I only ever herd Taco Bell (and never knew what that even was for a long ass time)
As a Brit im struggling to parse this sentence
in teh movie the european versions dub over every mention of taco bell with pizza hut and also any visuals are changed in post
honestly it seems like a reasonable change and I would have understood the scene better since we actually have pizza huts here
until you realize that requires dubbing over the acting and it sounds terrible
Ah im not sure ive heard of the movie
Thats why it made no sense to me 😂
Ironically in the past decade ive seen more taco bells in the UK than I have pizza huts
(Which is like 3vs1)
it's a fun/silly early 90s action movie
ST 5x6 ||Best episode of the season tbh||
||Dont like the rest of the season though||
but also jesus christ elevens actor (i dont remember her name lmao) cannot act at all
They all got worse as they aged lol
Either that or it was less noticeable cuz they were kids
ST ||god Mike gets literally nothing to act these days||
||could replace Finn with a cut out and nothing would change||
ST||Yeah him and el are by far the worst offenders its so bad||
ST ||I feel like the show has slowly just been dropping a lot of the old cast out of the spotlight. Like Mike and El and Joyce barely get anything to do in s5, while Robin gets tons||
ST s5 ||The show turned into a meme of itself after that coming out scene ||
ST||Especially when winona ryder is the only one who can actually act too so idk why shes getting pushed out||
I havent gotten there yet thats next episode but ive seen the memes lmao
Isn’t there a theory that it’s cuz she was high as a kite during that one awards show
yeah
but its wild how much ST fell off after s1 lmao
I'm kind of glad I didn't rewatch before s5
