I heard Supergirl Movie is gonna be based on Woman of Tomorrow so I picked up a copy and CUTE PUPPY!
Update: ||puppy got shot 😡||
You take that back or I'm gonna get Supergirl to treat you like a smelly bus patron
Look at him, he’s got no training and the ability to bite steel
He’s a objectively a bad dog
Jokes on you, I would want Milly Alcock to treat me like that
Yeah zee way to misread the room
No
Wrong
Incorrect
He is good dog
Terrible dog
This, I can agree with. I wouldn't be able to handle if she [Woman of Tomorrow] ||woke up, punched me one (1) time, and then went back to sleep.||
I need attention
First teaser for the ‘SCRUBS’ revival series.
Premiering February 25 on ABC and Hulu.
okay revivals are whatever but... i can't stop smiling
yeah the moment i saw Cox and Carla are both back I got way too excited
The Chair company ||Surprisingly very emotional ending to this episode, shaping up to be one of my favourite shows of the year||
||I saw it's been renewed for a season 2 and I'm not sure where it could go from here||
Fallout ep7 ||"Back up power initiated." ⚡ ||
||If you aren't the scientist you are the experiment.||
Okay finishing up the defunct land video and lol || them deciding to cheap out on everything in Star Wars land and the hotel because they didn’t want to pay union employees ||
|| chapek on video saying “cast members came up with their own characters all on their own” as if that is some mark of high quality and not a very obvious disaster of story telling and a way to clearly avoid having to pay somebody to write a cohesive story||
Might go rewatch Jenny’s video again lol
They likely pair well
Jenny: Here’s what this was like (bad and disappointing and over priced)
Kevin Perjurer: Here’s why it was like that
|| “they’re selling entertainment not tech”
and so their answer is to sell you slop. Because this feels like slop is where they’re headed ||
||Disney dark age 2 (or is it 3?) ||
For real def feels like they’ve moved into maximum extraction of money from people at parks because they have so much cultural value that people will still spend money to take their kids there even if it’s trash. Which is similar to what they’re doing with the live action remakes
Okay Walt charging millions in 60s money for his NIL is some god tier level of self dealing
|| oh my god that Walt animatronic jump scare ||
Now I wanna rewatch it once I'm home but I don't have enough time for a 4+ hour video if I want to go to bed on time 😭
I'm commonly glad Disney parks have no appeal for me
I genuinely can't think of a more miserable way to spend the day than what they have to offer
I went to DisneyWorld once for my High School Senior Trip
Suffice to say that was enough DisneyWorld for me for a lifetime
I think the ideal of Disney would be fun
The way the ads present it
But that’s not what it’s like so
I went once as a kid, don’t really remember it but had a great time. That’s probably sufficient
Disneyland has good rides. I don't have much positive to say about the rest of it
Growing up in Texas was like, its an eighteen hour drive to either one and ain't no way were my parents doing that for that when they had to be hard pressed to travel for actual family
And we had Six Flags locally
So if I wanted the roller coaster experience it was there
I don't need or particularly want the Disney Schtick on top of that
there's something about the atmosphere of amusement parks that i admittedly do enjoy, even as someone who doesn't really click with roller coasters (being high up and going fast is scary 😖)
but i personally don't feel a need to have like, the disney version of that
Finished Fallout.
My grandma paid for my family to do a weekend vacation at Dianeyland, not too long after I left high school, and I was honestly a little impressed by how much fun Animal Kingdom was to just like... exist in, but I think that was the best part, and uh... that's a really bad thing to be the best part of a theme park, no matter how cool it is
Epcot and Disney Hollywood Studios (or whatever that one is called) meanwhile were like... okay at best. Too long lines, impossible to get a fastpass for the rides I was actually interested in, theming was far less engaging or interesting than Animal Kingdom, legitimately one of the most interesting parts was interacting with the employees there and noticing stuff like "If they see a kid doing something stupid and dangerous, they're gonna say 'I'd hate for you to hurt yourself' as part of their warning to stop, instead of anything more direct"
Fallout review:
Fallout generally was a really great. Video game adaptation wise, this has been my favorite overall. Not that I think Arcane is bad, but they really don't adapt the actual 'game', they instead adapt from backstory about the characters and not what you actually play.
This series was... Kind of what I wish Star Wars would be. Fun, bloody, not afraid to getting it's hands dirty. Even though one is in space, they are basically really similar, a sci-fi like western.
The story, writing, acting and such was generally alright.
My only problem was the ending, it felt like they were forcing to make a sequel and I didn't like that.
I myself haven't really played the Fallout games(past the intro) but I am familiar with it. It seems mostly stay true.
I hope the next season is as good.
9/10 Owls.
With league, summoners and the actual game got written out of the lore almost a decade ago
Yeah this is most of why my family hasn't gone there
The game isnt a thing in the lore at all anymore
And yet I would argue it is a bad adaptation of the lore still
Yeah, Disney parks as they currently are sound overcrowded and over priced- there was a NYT article earlier this fall following a school bus driver who saved so her family could go, but it was so expensive and the logistics are tricky if you're not shelling out for resorts, and there was a wealthy family it contrasted with who paid for lighting lanes (the $$$ fast pass replacement)
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/28/opinion/disney-world-economy-middle-class-rich.html
I think my in-laws want to take their grandbaby to a park at some point, but I think it'd make more sense when kiddo will want to do/see specific things.
I did a Disney after dark at mgm in 2019 w/ friends during a chemistry conference it was fun. But uh as for like actually going now….. nah feels like they took a lot of the magic out of it
My grandparents did a big fancy trip with us when I was 3 because my mom and grandpa had just beaten cancer (I remember none of it) so if you’re going with kids I’d recommend waiting until they actually are old enough to like remember anything
there basically isnt a way for disney to run well given the demand
for me mostly the reminder that it's ubiquitous
I've heard it (without much evidence backing the claim up) that the way Disney's money moves, they're essentially a theme park company with just an enormous advertising budget, and that always stuck with me. And like... if the theme parks aren't even that good...
The theme parks weren’t awful before. I think it’s a little like how flying has gotten worse and worse because they up charge everything now
Like the pay for fast passes is some nasty work
Economically I dont think this is true
On the one hand I empathize with the people running the parks because Disney really has no solution to parks that pleases everyone. The parks are too desired and not big enough to support the demand they have.
On the other hand its Disney so I dont actually feel bad for them
-# Maybe what Disney needs is some sort of park...planet
From what I understand the Disney Parks are not awful now either (unless you dont like crowds).
The experience of many people who go to the parks (especially the ones paying for the trip) are bad because there is so much stress to get the most out of the trip.
If you live close enough to the park to not have travel problems and go there on nonpeak times I imagine its closer to what it was like for me to go to the local amusement park (an hours drive away) albeit a more expensive ticket
Can confirm. Most people go on holidays / during the summer / on weekends but that’s when Disney is BAD because there are so many people
It’s also more expensive on those days for even a ticket
If for some reason my local amusement park were an international destination I would probably read a whole bunch of people talking about how horrible an experience it is online similar to Disney
Disney Maxxing is a thing. My family goes a couple of times a year and my sister in law knows exactly how and when to book things. Once a decade is more than enough for me.
But they also only go into the parks to do the things they like and no longer feel the need to just be in the parks all day long.
My mom's best friend has a Disney time share and her husband is a veteran(for ticket discounts)so they can do it reasonably cheap.
veteran (for ticket discounts)
Joining the military for veteran discounts to Disney World is certainly a commitment
Alternatively this could just mean marrying a veteran for discounts to Disney
Though in this case it was an added benefit I would infact believe that there are folks out there who married a veteran in no small part for that Disney discounts.
just watched The Truman Show
unbelievable movie
absolutely nails everything about it
and what a soundtrack
In case I don’t see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and goodnight
I'm kind of surprised you hadn't already seen it
i never went through a true cinephile phase
and honestly i havent seen it talked about that much
I think a "true cinephile" probably doesn't like The Truman Show
It is very specific for being as widely referenced as it is
Same guy who directed Dead Poets Society btw
What's the first 👀👀
Peter Weir is crazy underrated
My favorite movie
I knew youd come running the moment he said It too 🤣
across teh spiderverse
O captain my captain
LOL
i clocked some of the reference but did not know what they are from
A MAN WITH TASTE 🫵🏽
Sound your barbaric YOP
Won't get any argument from me
anyway all of you should watch the truman show, i say misunderstanding the point of the movie
I do that all the time, speak your truth king
I’m very predictable. Mention my favorites and I will nerd out.
I will say, The Truman Show had me paranoid for like a good month after I watched it
😭
if you dont know anything about it just watch it, dont look anything up
EXACTTTTTLLLYYY
i knew the premise and honestly wish i hadnt
this movie is such a tearjerker
Knowing Robin Williams's life-long struggles really recontextualizes just how much heart he puts into parts of it
truman show all ||the wife havinga nervous breakdown, doing an ad read for no reason, and then gaslighting truman was just an unreal scene||
And it’s just so good
I love Robin Williams
This and Good Will Hunting are on my list for him
And also the Truman show now apparently?? 😂
Dead Poets Society is just… wow. It’s a hard movie to watch.
robin williams isnt in the truman show
mg just got excited
Patch Adams is a great Williams movie also
It’s just by the same director I think Ryan mentioned
Hook too
I will take every chance to shill my favs
Go off queen
I would tweak out too if someone mentioned my favorite movie, the hit 2010 original CN movie Firebreather :3
-# and pookie knew what it was, the bar was in hell and he leaped over it!
Did I ever tell you guys what my favorite movie of all time is
You won’t guess it ever
In like a million years
Superman
Is it the hit 2010 original CN movie, Firebreather
Superman (1978)
Narrow it down a bit, give us a medium, like animated, acted....
-# if you say motion capture im taking that as a cry for help
It’s live action, from the 80s, and its fantasy
Krull?
-# amazed there were even fantasy movies before LoTR
Dark Crystal?
Labyrinth
This is a very popular movie, I’m surprised
I just don’t think it’s something you guys would guess I’d like
I might know it and just not know it's 80s xD
even in their own fake movie they have one of the worst drafts of all time
I literally rewatch it like 5 times a year
...oh that is 80s huh
Oh that makes sense
Not my fault, I havenr seen it
COSMIC NO
This is probably my favorite scene in any movie ever, next to the trench run from A New Hope https://youtu.be/rMz7JBRbmNo?si=jpt7mzmEml6przKD

CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Westley (Cary Elwes) tricks Vizzini (Wallace Shawn) and poisons him, allowing Westley and the Princess (Robin Wright Penn) to escape together.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on William Gol...
Princess Bride is definitely one to watch ASAP because it’s low commitment, has high pop culture impact, and is amazing
I'm watching Wake Up Dead Man tomorrow for my birthday!
(I say tomorrow, it's technically today, it's 2 AM for me. I watch it in 12 hours)
I should watch princess bride at some point too
Fine... I will let you watch Princess Bride before LotR. But only because it's The Princess Bride.
I can't believe this man messaged me last night to say "you should watch this!" about a film that's been one of my favorites for a decade
The disrespect
I grew up loving Jim Carrey's goofier movies, and I really love how in the Truman Show his manic energy somehow becomes something very subtle
||With how all his mannerisms were subtly incentivized by the people around him to make him a more watchable personality||
This is one of those "wait he's also a really good dramatic actor" movies
Oooo oh really??
I mean it is a dramatic role that plays to his comedic strengths
He's still Jim Carey in The Truman Show
Of course the best of these kind of comedian-to-dramatic-roles do
Good Will Hunting and Dead Poets Society are both very Robin Williams roles, Breaking Bad is keenly aware of Malcom in the Middle in particular, etc
I think it works bc of the stilted unreality of the entire situation
You are never sure who is really acting
The whole sequence leading up is just chefs kiss
It's good on rewatch
For those of yall who are going to watch Zootopia 2,give me your reviews, I am thinking about watching it.
Absolute Batman 14 was excellent
||Can’t believe they found a way to make Absolute Bane even more ridiculous. Also I really like that the solution to this wasn’t Bruce taking Venom and overpowering Bane, it was Bruce stripping the Venom out of his system and making it into darts so he could force Bane into ODing on Venom||
Scott Synder refuses to make a the absolute Batman version of a villain a normal size
My thoughts on the Hazbin demos they released (Brighter 80s mix, Piss Power Ballad mix, and Losin Streak R&B mix)
||I fw brighter heavily but i think the darker more aggresive tone fits the emotion of the scene better, the Piss demo is.... alright but the final is just objectively better, and the losin streak demo is basically a different song and its a really interesting musical idea i hope sam revisists for the inevitible season 3 huskerdusk song||
also Sam can sound shockingly like Christian
The what? 👀
buying the seasn 2 soundtrack on apple music gives the 3 demos mentioned and the Alastor recap song
someone uploaded them all to youtube as well but those arent offical uploads and might get snipped
Stranger Things tonight
Isn’t it crazy how my excitement for it just… died after they made us wait 3 years
It lost its charm after like season 2
In the theater for Wake Up Dead Man!
Quentin Tarantino has finally directed the missing chapter of ‘KILL BILL’ that never made it into the final film
︀︀
︀︀The short film will release in Fortnite on November 30.
does this count as the 10th film he won't shut up about?
In Fortnite????
Epic will have to put millions of dollars into foot rendering technology
I saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with my grandma
When we left the theater, she turned to me and said “Now what do you suppose was the symbolism behind all the shots that started with feet?”
Funny. I watched Once Upon A Time In Hollywood with my 3 year old son, and after we walked he looked to me and said, “Father, i believe the quantity of naked feet symbolized how Hollywood is an upside down place, if you will, where truth is not found in the eyes or mouth or, more scandalously, the breasts (and isnt plastic surgery such an epidemic?), but in the feet, the last bastion of integrity.”
That’s a real story though
My grandma is a film buff
She has watched the Oscar’s every year since they started airing on tv and always sees all the films up for best picture at a minimum
I know the pacing of that comment just reminded me
Hell yeah. That was awesome
Oh I'm going to see it later today 👀
Just finished Wicked: For Good and I liked it a lot. Might be one of my new favorite movies
Oh right stranger things is out now eh
Hazbin demos ||I really don't like the Brighter one 😭 mainly just because of how much Ive listened to the original I think, but it just feels really weirdly slowed down||
||Someone on a comment said that the Brighter one was the song Vox stole to make the one in the show, and I think that idea is too funny to be wrong||
And… Netflix crashed
||I do find it really interesting how they just made it more obviously violent in the official lmao||
||whats funny is all the changed lines are food related for some reason||
Who could have foreseen this
I don’t know how they’ll handle the Christmas Day traffic
The next 3 eps of Stranger Things drop then and the NFL games are also on there
They handled Beyoncé last year
Is it worth trying to watch ST now or is netflix having issues
id give it a day
Watch the new Ken Burns documentary instead
If I watch anything else it'll be the new mighty nein
Stranger things 5.1 ||god they are all SO OLD it's killing me lmao||
5.1 ||the opening present-day scene was so strange to watch 😭 ||
oh is new ST out?
Yeah
First 4 episodes
I didn’t like it
I wanted a horror show. It was actually slice of life 80s nostalgia fest with elements of horror
I think season 1 was effective horror
Not the show runner’s fault they didn’t cater to me, but I did feel lied to by the ads and everyone telling me it was super scary
I think I saw an interview where they described it as more coming of age then anything
Not to someone who wanted it to be primarily and mainly horror it wasn’t
Granted horror in the 80s movie style
What I wanted was another Haunting of Hill House
Stranger Things S1 ||like specifically the Will plot line with his mom discovering the upside down had some nice spooky moments. The Eleven plot line wasnt really horror in the horror movie sense||
Having recently rewatched the original Alien, I would say that the spooky parts of ST S1 were spookier than the spooky parts of Alien
STRANGER THINGS SEASON FIVE LET'S GOOOOOOOOOO
ST 5.2 start ||holy crap they actually killed some old characters. Not that they were terribly relevant but it's still something||
Netflix is fighting for its life so I guess I'll try again later tonight or tomorrow
I'm liking it so far though
oh wow they look so goddamn old
Holly looks way older than she should lmao
She's supposed to be, what, 7? 8? She looks 10, if not older
Seeing Wake Up Dead Man soon 🙏
Hell yeah
It's a roller coaster
You're getting on Rian Johnson's wild ride and there's no stops until the light of God shines. Or something like that
I was trying to come up with a religious metaphor but I couldn't think of anything better lmao
Very excited 🙏
Slight expectations but no actual spoilers ||This movie was really funny for me cuz I made a theory like 15 minutes in, went through like five other theories over the course of the movie, and then the theory I made at the start was right||
||There wasn't even a reason for that original theory. It was just a baseless thing that I made in five seconds lmao||
is stranger things any good
I like it quite a bit
Finished rewatching breaking bad
It has its good seasons and its bad. S4 was really good.
Ah
i liked season 1 and the first quarter of 4
It just came out. I'm enjoying ep 1 so far
tbh i never actually bothered to watch BCS to its completion
also forgot how ass the breaking bad finale is
tbh
feels like it ||undoes all of the consequences walter caes in ozymandias||
ST 5.2 ||was the vecna= whatsit reveal supposed to be shocking? I thought it was pretty plainly obvious by the fact that nobody could see him, and then they did the drawn out writing of his name which was clear from letter 1. All after Will just outright said it. Idk it didn't hit that well for me||
||also as always some good duos for this season. Robin and Will is fun (gaaaaaay), Jonathan and Steve is annoying but tolerable because I think they'll have good stuff to work out. And maybe I'm misremembering but have Mike and Nancy ever been paired up during actual action/investigation? I like seeing them work together||
||Hopper is annoying me though, I think the writers have struggled with him a lot after season 2||
5.3 ||drugging a whole family so they can do home alone is crazy work||
Finished the first batch of stranger things. I'm liking it so far, more than I expected to
5.4 ||following through on 008 was very very unexpected||
ST 5.1 ||pretty solid start. Curious about Holly’s imaginary friend, I have a strange feeling he’s not actually evil. Not sure if Dustin is even alive which is crazy.||
You're totally right
Crazy experience
Yeah lmao
Wake Up Dead Man full ||I was gonna say "there's no brakes until the culprit is confessing their sins" but I decided that was quite literally the end of the movie, so I went with a different angle||
WUDM ||i was so convinced wicks faked his death and was the culprit||
||This movie is a very unique subversion because Rian Johnson played with the two most likely theories based on his prior movies and what would be most unexpected for this movie: That the victim didn't actually die, or that the protagonust Jud is the actual killer. And he used BOTH of them and made them BOTH red herrings to the real answer. He used "Jud was the killer" as a red herring MULTIPLE times, in fact||
||He knew what the theories were gonna be when he wrote it, and he used them to throw us off completely||
||Oh yeah, also. The theory I mentioned was that Martha did it. I said it to my friend in the scene that we met her, I just went "She's gonna be the killer". And then my theory proceeded to change multiple times before it was finally revealed that yes, she was in fact one of the culprits||
||one of my friends guessed Martha and I replied with my theory
one of us had it. Though I was right in being convinced someone would come out of the tomb, just not who||
||between the title and the tomb and some of the stuff he was preaching I was so sure wicks had faked his death so he could rise and punish them||
||I didn't even figure out that "Wake Up Dead Man" referred to Wicks rising from the grave until I was leaving the theater lmao||
||I should have figured it out when it happened, if not sooner||
||But yeah, my theories were basically: Wicks killed himself, the entire flock was in on his murder, Wicks AND the entire flock were in on it, Wicks faked his death, Jud did it, I thought the groundskeeper was in on it for a minute....||
WUDM ||as soon as they described the tomb I was convinced someone would be waking up from it. Originally thought it would be the grandfather xD||
Fair
Oh right
||I also considered that Grace was never actually dead and she was the one who did it||
||....for about half a second before I realized that if that were true she would be way too old||
||there was also a bit where they summarised some of what wicks had been preaching as "rising from the grave and punishing them" and then said something about him being talking about himself instead of christ||
||oooh I also was considering Grace being involved||
||She would have died of AGE if she survived at the tomb||
||I had no real theory on how but I was sort of expecting her to tie into it somehow, especially being "redeemed" or explored in some way||
||mainly because of the way past movies have had young women struggling against systems and power||
||When Martha was leaning over the casket, I knew she was doing something untoward. That reignited my suspicions of her before I promptly forgot about her doing that lmao||
||tbf, they did kind of do both, since they made her out to be a victim who was treated terribly by everyone close to her, then cheated out of the one thing that kept her staying there, before ultimately dying because of it. If she wasn't promised the fortune, she would never have stayed and would have lived a far happier life. That's why Jud made Martha apologize to her as well before she passed, and why Martha had to acknowledge that she wronged her.||
||It's kind of interesting that they never bring up where the flask went after it got stolen from Jud. The answer is probably just "Martha/the doctor stole it", but idk, it felt like there was something there that wasn't explored. It's easy to fill the pieces in, they realized that he stayed behind to take the flask when it was never found and assumed he put it in his room, took it back, and disposed of it, so it's not necessary to address it. But they never do anyway||
||oh yeah definitely. I'd forgotten about it by that point, but I wasn't totally surprised we explored that||
||I love the trio of protagonists when viewed as a collective. They're all from minority groups: Martha is an illegal immigrant, Andi is a black woman, and Jud is a Christian who actually preaches Christian values! /s
(yes i know that jud is a killer and that's how he's the outcast but idk that joke was too funny not to make)||
||I just thought it was really funny that we had two women of color as the protagonists, and then a white dude as the third||
WUDM ||I'm not religious myself, but I did like that the themes of the movie felt like they leaned more towards "the church isn't bad, it just has some bad people in it" than totally damning it. And I liked how Jud was worked into all that||
Yeah I agree
||I was going into the movie thinking that it would be an out and out criticism of religion, which would make sense since the last two movies were both overt criticisms of rich people, but I wasn't sure how I'd feel about that.||
||I really enjoyed the way blanc and jud's characters and arcs worked with the themes||
||And I am happy that ultimately Johnson did portray religion positively through Jud, and just said that Wicks was a cancer who was poisoning this specific group of people||
||And especially Blanc's characterization throughout the movie, how he starts out completely dismissive of religion and proclaiming it as a bunch of hoo-ha, and then at the end he realizes "Wait, I can't solve this crime. Jud has to do it because he has faith, and that's what the resolution of this case requires"||
||So he completely cedes the climactic "Detective breaks down the whole crime" thing in favor of allowing a priest to accept the confession of a parishioner||
Glass Onion/WUDM ||Overall, while I don't think this movie gels as well as the original, I think it is a lot better than Glass Onion. I liked Glass Onion, but its entire point was criticizing the rich, something the original did a lot better, and the joke that Miles is a complete and utter moron. It doesn't really do anything beyond those two things. WUDM makes me actually think about things beyond its runtime other than "Wow, billionaire influencers are idiots"||
||Though one criticism I will have for this movie is that the characters aren't all there. Blanc, Jud, Wicks, and Martha have amazing characterization, and to a lesser extent Cy and Geraldine. And then the other are just. There. Nat has so little focus despite being the guy who does the deed, and everyone else is just sorta there. And aside from the groundskeeper, who seems like a chill guy, the other characters are portrayed as assholes, but it doesn't really feel as important as it does in the other two movies.||
Knives Out/WUDM ||For instance, in the original Knives Out, the characters being racist assholes feels like it has a point, because Marta is an easy object of their hatred because she is a hispanic woman who isn't in the country legally. In this movie, the author guy is a racist asshole just to make us hate him and he doesn't do anything in the story to really justify that character trait. I know the point is that Wick is encouraging the worst in these people, which is why they are the way they are, but still.||
||That said, it is interesting that the ones who are the least terrible are the women, because Wicks is a sexist asshole and he puts the women down for being women (forcing one to raise his kid and the other to give him loads of money for nothing). While with the men, he encourages them to take out their aggression on others. Cyrus and the author guy, he directs to hate the woke. Nat, he directs to be misogynistic. I'm sure that's definitely on purpose||
WUDM ||Though Nat's misogyny over his wife divorcing him doesn't really come up as anything but a tertiary characteristic. It's hardly relevant, no conflict comes up with it. He doesn't harass the women at all, he even works with one of them to commit the crime.||
||i feel like this one probably goes deeper into the main cast, but at the expense of a lot of the side/less central characters||
Yeah very true
WUDM/benoit trilogy ||which I don't mind. We've had two movies about assholes already, so it is nice to go for a more thematic angle and look at the protagonists more||
||but feels a bit like there's maybe some untapped stuff there||
||Neither of the other movies focused on Blanc very much. He was just the dude solving the murder. He was funny and intelligent but he didn't really grow at all. Blanc is the same man at the start of Knives Out that he is at the end of Glass Onion. But this movie feels like a marked difference, he does into this one treating it like any other murder, but he comes out of it with a different perspective, realizing that maybe he doesn't need to solve the murder this time, maybe he just needs to trust in a man with faith in God.||
||I do wish Nat had some more meat to him though. Martha is clearly the primary culprit and the one that the story wanted you to care about, but Nat also had an important role and also they got jeremy renner for him and gave him so little lmao||
||I keep forgetting which one Nat is
||
||part of me wishes that Renner was playing himself because of the GO reference, but I see why he wouldn't want to be that character||
||I forgot too I had to look it up lmao||
||yeah, it just keeps taking me a minute to connect the name and person||
||That said, it was so worth it, because Jud is the best protag of the three. He's really good.||
Benoit trilogy all ||I feel like this one maybe leant harder into the drama/character stuff? Jud felt a lot more fleshed out and felt like... messier? maybe? With him often coming into conflict with Blanc and all. Felt a bit like it was drawing less on archetypes||
Fair
||If they do a fourth movie, I think I'd probably want that to hit closer to the first two, but I did really enjoy this one||
||its probably recency bias + the gothic vibes but it might be my favourite of the three 🤔 ||
||It's cuz Jud went on his own little journey. He met Blanc and was like "idk about this guy, you want me to help solve a murder", but then as it went on he got inspired to solve the murder and he was getting super into it. But then he had that phone call, and he remembered why he was doing what he was doing. He saw that he was, to some extent, losing his faith chasing after Blanc's murderer, and he cut it off.||
||It feels like much more of a jud movie with benoit supporting than a "benoit and [x]" movie, I think ||
||Marta and Helen had a pretty stable relationship with Blanc. Helen was always on Blanc's side, and Marta was against him for most of the movie but only because she thought she was the killer||
||But like that scene in the rain genuinely felt like Jud had started to actually resent Blanc||
Yepp
||I really like what they did with jud and benoit||
WUDM ||both had really juicy arcs, imo||
Yee

Thanksgiving on a nice Kansas farm vs Thanksgiving in a dark brooding cave, I’m choosing the Kents
https://x.com/jcbedgar/status/1994061828222067064?s=46
Kent's ez. You know they got the good food. And I'll feel welcome.
Kent’s, the conversation would be significantly less awkward and stilted
Kents are normal people
Also the Kents don’t live in Gotham so that’s a plus
waynes are rich so you can ask for money
also is pa kent dead
and what robins are there
I think the art answers both questions
Okay but like, thanksgiving with bruce wayne and all like 30 of his adopted children would be so funny
Surely we can revive all the dead ones for one gag comic
assuming current mainline canon arent they all alive rn
also alfred is a SSS tier michelin star level chef so like
is alfred back?
No but Bruce has a hologram Alfred
well that doesnt count
Holo Alfred is more pathetic than mourning and moving on
hes not a robin
How's Stranger things s5 so far?
The Kent's is the only true answer.
honestly i think he can rock the robin suit
I liked it
I think smiling Batman is much more interesting conversation
The Kent's is the correct answer because they would be happy to host a stranger

Whom watched Pluribus ep5
I haven't seen Us yet, but between Nope and Get Out I like GO more
Meeeeeeee
Pluribus 5 ||I'm guessing what Carol found at the end in the walk in freezer was corpses- I can see Them seeing body recycling as a way to reclaim nutrients and since they are all one they don't necessarily need the death rituals that make us feel better, I guess?||
I'm partly influenced in my theorizing by reading Record of Spaceborn Few at the moment haha
I have read a few things about how close comedy and horror are. Both require build up, suspense and payoff, just with vastly different emotions being manipulated
Like, the timing of a punchline to a joke and the timing of a scare are very comparable
I watched Get Out last which might be why it's my least favourite but I found Nope to be so utterly up my street
Like I didn't just like the movie, I loved the concept and the theming and Nope ||The monster design, both physically and audio design||
I liked Get Out more
See also: Zach Cregger from whitest kids u know
Also did Barbarian and Weapons
Yes! Both movies I also thoroughly enjoyed
Get out is probably better but Ive only seen nope and it was nuts in a great way
This general idea is also why you can often see comedy actors turning around and killing it in dramatic and thriller roles
Every time I see that sentiment I'm reminded of that bizarre Audi commercial with Aaron Paul, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, and Bryan Cranston
It’s just the dude who did the slap ass sketch going from that to the Oscar’s is just… incredible
In the middle of his aerobics routine, one of the competitors at the 1987 Jazz Fit Championships receives some shocking news.
About Key & Peele:
Key & Peele showcases the fearless wit of stars Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele as the duo takes on everything from "Gremlins 2" to systemic racism. With an array of sketches as wide-reaching as ...
I think this sketch is the best example of how he can do both
To be clear I’m not saying I don’t understand it’s just the K&P to horror icon is funny

Those "team lineups" were my introduction to Key and Peele. 😆
Huh I hadn’t seen that one. Thats great
I really need to watch Us and Nope at some point

I can't wait for Avatar 3!
How did avatar make a bajillion dollars and leave zero cultural impact
Twice
Clearly it has left a cultural impact in that nobody can mention it without somebody saying it has no impact
It’s like the wave of people saying everyone forgot game of thrones
Idk about 0 cultural impact
Name one character
Also this is a meme
Such a bs way to fact check stuff
I get that your lived experience tells you that it had no cultural impact and that asking me to name characters might make you feel better about you thinking it has no cultural impact but its just your lived experience. Mine is different
I will forever remember the visuals and how beautiful the movies are and how much I love the world building and how much I crave more of that world
And how silly it is that sigorney weaver is jesus
I confused it with atla even before watching atla.
They really failed with the naming for me, IDK even the name 'Avatar' has to do with the actual film.
The people go into Navi “avatars” to interact with them i think
Yep that's where the name comes from afaik
I really don't see it. 😂
Ok sorry it might be disingenuous to say zero but we can agree its impact was way smaller than Titanic, Endgame and The Force Awakens
Tbh I don't think Force Awakens had a big cultural impact either, it road the star wars wave.
I mean it was the first star wars movie in 10 years it was a little important on its own
tbh it made money because its pretty adn thats about it
its cultural impact is in its tech not its writing
Also in not saying it didnt make an impact on people it just didn’t really make an impact on popculture as a whole
Is its impact on popculture the only metric for why it should have success and continued success as well on top of all this
Like your acting as if its the case that impact on culture is the only metric we should he assigning success to
No
My comment was “its weird something so successful didnt leave much of an impact”
Like the writing is kinda ass but the writing isnt the point really
It led a massive impact though
Ahh then for me I would answer that with "pretty blue aliens look cool"
it massively impacted CGI
I personally saw from Avatar, wasn't that it was actually good, but the effects/motion capture/cgi was done well.
They've aged quite poorly
Also its got a story that even if its simplistic and kinda dumb at times. A story that resonates with enough humans
It effected the industry and not the culture.
I went back and watched it in like 2021, 2022ish and it was just all around bad
i dont think a lot of stories took inspiration from avatar, mainly bc the only innovative thing about it was the tech, but even in terms of art or vibe it feels on an island
How, exactly?
What did it do that ILM and Weta Digital weren't already doing?
A lot more people use motion capture now days, even games do.
Again i never said it was bad or unsuccessful
also kickstarted the 3d craze for the 12th time
The best case you can make for it is that it is like a 5-10% improvement over Revenge of the Sith which is the closest prior big budget CGIfest I can think of that left a mark on that front
I think there was something about real time rendering or something but it’s been 15 years so… eh could be mixing it up with something else
im pretty sure the tech invented and used in avatar has had a tangible impact, but idk if you ascribe that to the film in the same way you would for spiderverse for example
Or I guess maybe the original Iron Man? But that didn't actually use that much CGI even
iron man 1 i would not call a cgi fest
Certainly not by modern Marvel standards
one of the most disaponting turns of the MCU
the scene with iron man and the jets just has a weight to it that marvel movies never recaptured
Yes and im giving you reasons for its success. 1. Visuals look good. 2. Story that resonates with enough humans. 3. James Cameron name
Enough humans lol
Actually, hilariously, Weta Digital was the lead visual effects studio for Avatar
Ok you misunderstood my statement
I never said “why is it successful” i said “why did it leave no cultural impression while being successful”
Ik why pretty movie by famous man jimmy cameron made lots of money
Judging based off the Wikipedia page, I can't see anything here that isn't just an iterative improvement over the Lord of the Rings movies six years prior
Wait did anyone actually care about the story of avatar, like anyone i dont think i know a person who cared for a story people just saw it 12 times because pretty 3d
I was wondering how it did that and also didnt stay relevnt
Yes and I am answering that. You can have low cultural impact while being successful when the movies draw is mostly about name recognition reputation and good visuals with a story that resonates with enough humans
I am directly answering your question
I think they started full facial motion capture with a head mounted cam closeup, which made it a lot easier to do.
Even Sandfall Interactive is using it and they make games.
I would also argue that the cultural impact is still higher than you think but that's a different discussion
The head mounted camera I would very much quantify as an iterative improvement, not a revolutionary one
It did unfortunately convince a bunch crap to be released in 3d for a few years
And it kind of forced theaters to upgrade their screens/etc.
So I feel like it impacted the industry than our culture.
I mean George Lucas did more for this than Avatar did, he spent a great deal of his own money developing and subsidizing standards for cinemas to use during this same time period
Because it was thinn veneer of pretty movie with big name and pretty average story and that's it
Apple didn't invent touch screens but they sure did use it to change a lot in our world.
Yaa invention usually isnt the person who makes the most cultural impact with a thing
Its an eddison tesla type situation
Apple also offered a level of improvement over what previously existed to make it market viable. Avatar didn't do that, Lord of the Rings did as they invented it, as shown by the existence of, well, Lord of the Rings
Also notable that it is the same people who invented it who were working on Avatar as their lead digital studio. It would have happened with or without Cameron
when did anyone say it was James Cameron, specifically?
they would have needed (a) money, and (b) a project that required these improvements
Avatar is the project that did happen, and the source of that budget
The theater with the big seats isn't the one with the good resolution.

It was a project that happened, and it happened to be the first one to utilize a specific, iterative improvement
It isn't responsible for "changing the industry"
There's a reason I used to always go for the more expensive cinema experience back home.
- Big comfy seats.
- Alcohol and food delivered to me during the film.
- Away from the normie poors
But I am the poors
Yeah its such a good experience and very normal. Almost all the big cinema chains in Australia have an upcharged separate film experience for not THAT much more
Yeah, we have a bistro where you can get them to bring the food to your seat.
It was always worth
Cause you got unlimited free popcorn and soft drinks ontop of food and alcohol you could order during the film
ah
It is relatively common these days, thanks in large part to the popularity of the Alamo Drafthouse
When i lived in china i was friends with a guy who managed a theater so i got free tickets or wtver and where i live rn i just go to this local kinda cheap theater
Most major theater chains have a variant that does this now
I have two theaters near me, one attached to a mall, that has the good screens, and the bistro that has good seats.
I had a fantastic burger from one of these places called "To Kill A Mockingburger"
All the items on the menu were named after some notable movie
i dont even have food at theaters anymore
This is all in aussie dollars so this is the normal price for a ticket
Then this is the luxury experience
yeah i got tacos at superman
it ruled
Alamo Drafthouse specifically is also super aggressive about policing phone usage and talking during the movies, they really will throw people out for being disruptive
i go to a theater to watch stuff not eat
I sneak in a drink.
And I might get some popcorn if I am feeling flush like Latter.
About twice the price but very worth
Wish my local theater was like that
lmao
Our premium dine in cinema experience, combines fine wine, premium food and comfort with cutting edge sound and visuals – the guaranteed best seat in the house.
i don't go to the theater anymore, but for like a once-a-year outing with my siblings, it was so novel for me and great
Here's the full details for the curious
Let me calculate to US....
Especially cause I would go to the cinema mabey 3 or 4 times a year max
It was super easy to find the cash for that when I was working
This is the menu as well for the curious again in aud
Damn, this is a lot.
The highest prices I can find in my theaters are like 32aud, and that is the fancy vibrating chairs, and our normal prices are even cheaper.
Tuesday is really cheap for me as well.
I wouldn't judge the prices too much
Its always kinda reductive to compare directly. Cost of living equations and all the complexities of life change so much between aus and usa
Yeah, I do live in a low cost of living place, and honestly not that many people go to my movie theaters generally. The last three anime movies that I watch combined couldn't have filled a single theater.
Yaa and like that cinema brand alone has 9 different locations in the city I come from in Australia
And theres probs 2 or 3 other large cinema chains
In that city
Its always crazy to remember just how rural it is at times here in iowa when comparing it directly to perth, and I really do miss perth at times
BCS S2E1 + Breaking bad||Lmao the tequilla is the tequilal from breaking bad they use to poision the cartel||
Damn u guys getting scalped
Nah its just how much something like a cinema costs when everyone along the chain gets paid well and tips dont exist
Or at least aren't normalized
Its not that much more expensive than here in the usa

Get Out
Filming performers in an empty box while capturing in their movements and faces and generating a real-time virtual environment.
I'm unaware of any movie that did that previously
Oh, didnt realize how far back I was
He deserved it
Bottom line I don't get the downplaying of what Avatar did technically
Its not comparable to LotR at all, those movies were still using matte paintings!
Its more comparable to the prequel trilogy. Mediocre writing with visual spectacles. I think Avatar ages better than, for instance, Attack of the Clones because Cameron is just a better director and the aging CGI is still generally "shot" in interesting ways
taylor swift would release a 30th special edition of the tortured poets department to block the vampire lestats spot on the billboard chart and within 24 hrs travis kelce would go missing

Oh I assumed you had watched the full epp
But its also what I was thinking during most of the epp
Okay about to watch Zootopia 2.
-# Snuck in a drink.
Pluribus 5 ||I do find myself doubting that a water soluble thing that results in a clear liquid could hold all the required nutrients for human sustenance in there. Like. You're getting enough protein and calories in something that looks like apple juice to live? I feel like food doesn't work that way...||
I am the only one here. O.o
Pluribus 5 ||I do hope the reveal is not going to be a soylent green thing because that does feel kind of obvious. If it is though, it does imply that there's more to the Joining than just the unified consciousness that's focused on happiness and efficiency. If you averaged all the humans in the world together, I feel like the majority opinion would be opposed to cannibalism! That's not just a thing the average human thinks is a good idea. Maybe it would be like, the Joined are incapable of feeling bad stuff like disgust anymore? But honestly it's not really efficient to eat human bodies either I'm pretty sure, especially people who died in random ways.||
Pluribus 5/Mirror Empire ||Like there is a weirdness to the idea of a group that is opposed to killing any kind of creature, including for food but is okay with cannibalism. There is kind of a culture in the Mirror Empire books that does a similar thing where they're all pacifist vegetarians except they also practice funerary cannibalism, but in that case I kind of buy it more as a cultural set up where the idea of eating meat disgusts you because that experience is reserved for this funerary rite. IDK I guess if Pluribus is doing that, I'm inclined to think that The Mirror Empire already did it better.||
Depends on the movie, personally
I saw kraven with friends in an empty theatre, great experience because we could laugh at stuff. I saw Wake up dead man in a packed theatre, great experience because everyone was reacting and such
Pluribus 5 ||IMO, if it is Soylent Green, it's either "waste not, want not", or it's that that's just how little they care about individual bodies||
Depends on the movie but you and the gang can’t throw a football in a packed movie theatre
FBI OPEN UP
SNEAKING DRINKS IN THEATRES IS ILLEGAL
Just say it's whiskey, they won't get mad at you for violating their monopoly because they don't have a liquor license
My local theatres have liqour licenses so that doesn't work for me
I feel like most theaters these days do yeah
They've all got little bars inside with movie themed drinks, even the big chains now
I’m friends with people who work in theaters, trust me, they see you sneak in the drinks and food, and no, they don’t care
Okay an old guy and his grand daughter came, no longer alone.
It’s only if you don’t make an effort to hide it
You better offer them a sip so they stay quiet
But will they let me sneak in a tv and second movie to watch during the movie
Only if there’s yet another layer of misdirection and the second movie is actually host to a third movie
Ok as the lone person who voted packed so far, I'm thinking of when it's release week and you've got other people reacting for the first time to something and that's fun
I will say between the crowded KPDH and the one-other-parent/child for Gabby's Dollhouse, alone is sliiiiiightly better if I'm taking a tiny person who wants to run and I am less stressed, but those movies endorse crowd participation
;-; getting a babysitter makes going to a theater movie a more expensive treat, alas so I'll probably save For Good for when we visit my parents and they can hang out with the toddler
Plubrius 5 || there is just too much weirdness in what the hive mind is bad at or dosent know. That i think we are ment to see the flaws and the fact its not the sum total human brains that are left. Things are weird enough that its making me question a lot. Also yeah it felt like it was leading to soylent green the whole epp in an relatively obvious way so it will be interesting to see what it is actually. ||
Plur 5 ||I will definitely be very annoyed if they led up to a really obvious answer and did a jump cut cliffhanger at the end to not reveal what it is and then it turns out to be the obvious answer that everyone guessed. That would be... bad. I am telling Pluribus for its own sake it better do something different||
Zootopia 2:
If you liked the first one, you are going to like the second.
Though I do think it has problems, it suffers from sequelitis, where at the end of the first movie everything was good, so they have to restart conflict/etc to make another movie. I honestly see this as lazy.
But overall the movie was fine.
8/10 Oowlkas.
It does have an after credit scene BTW.
Pluribus ||The scene in, I think it was episode 4, where the hivemind apparently didn't know Carol's book until it had a few moments to prepare and then appeared to start reading from one of the first pages, it sort of shows that there are limitations||
I ain't gonna lie people are giving it a much better rating than I expected
Pluribus || for me its the way the hive mind is so bad at talking to and dealing with carol that shows to me its mabey the memories of the humans but but not like the essence of them or somethings missing. There has to be missing info or something imo||
Pluribus 5 ||"We experience it through many eyes, many hearts". I think there's no scale between different people. Someone enjoyed reading Wycaro "as much" as someone else enjoyed shakespeare, so they're the same in the hivemind's eyes||
That part i totally buy
Eh, I was leaning towards a 7 but I thought being gracious. I really only had one or two problems with it. It could have been better. But it's wierd... I think on the whole a lot of movies are a lot worse generically.
Now I probably won't want to see it again though.
Would you rather be in a packed movie theater or alone?

Alone
My best movie theater experience I ever had was when my dad and I went to see Captain America; The Winter Soldier and were the only two people in the room. In fact, it would seem the theater itself forgot we were in there, because it just kept playing the previews-before-the-actual-trailers for like, 20 minutes. My dad went and told them about it, and they started the movie and gave us two free tickets to whenever we next came as an apology. And then my dad and I saw one of the best Marvel movies ever in a room all to ourselves. It was epic.
That sounds so sick
My favorite movie theater experience.... its a tie between Sinners and Black Panther probably
Black Panther is another one of my top theater experiences. 😁 Mainly because it released on my birthday and Black Panther was already one of my favorite Marvel superheroes, so of course it was a given done deal how I'd be celebrating.
Endgame can't be beat for me. One of the biggest theaters I've been in, packed to the brim. The energy was crazy
Oooo yeah good answer!
Another funny theater story I have. My mom is prone to falling asleep in the theater, and we went to see infinity war. ||Sometime during the battle of wakanda I think, she leans over to me and asks "where's Loki? I thought he was in this one"
I had to tell her he died ten minutes in but she was already asleep lmao||
Infinity war ||what is it with moms and loki omg 😂||
Tom Hiddleston is mom crack
Apparently 💀 hes my moms favorite (after black panther of course)... she has a track record for villains though
Infinity War and Endgame were also peak theater experiences. Maybe that's why I used to be such a fan of the MCU. They knew how to make a great theater experience back in the day.
Princess and The Frog was also a foundational theater experience. I was 8 years old, rocking in my seat happy to see the pretty brown princess
This plus Thor: The Dark World ||Especially since last time Loki had a mom, he was indirectly responsible for her death. 💀 ||
I keep thinking of theater experiences darn it... I saw Revenge of The Sith for its anniversary this year... that was SICK
I totally would have watched that if it was like an extended cut or something
But I was just like "I can watch it at home tho"
My fav theater experience was Force Awakens or Endgame
Endgame was… wow.
Tom Hiddleston is fine

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/helldivers-movie-justin-lin-sony-1236438370/
There is already a helldivers movie smh
Lin is not a gamer and leaned into that as a strength
Why is that a strength? "I have no idea about this property, and that's why I'm the best choice??"
Someone has eaten Cookie Monster's triple berry pie, and only Beignet Blanc can solve the case.

This is great what the hell
There's probably a risk that someone who was too much of a gamer would lean too much into easter eggs and callbacks, and might lose the forest for the trees? The example I use for adaptations like that is Warcraft, which was a reasonably fun adaptation for fans who know the story, but honestly a rather bad movie if you don't already know the story and characters and what the callbacks are reminding you of
A lot of great adaptations and IP work has been done by people who were not super fans of the original
besides, I don't think you need to play Helldivers for more than a few hours to 'get it', this isn't something like The Last of Us where people fall in love with specific characters and details that they need to perfectly capture
it's a strength because this THR article was paid for by the studio
I think you can portray any perspective as a strength, it's just a question of what someone's looking for
I could walk up to them and say 'hire me, I have absolutely no idea how to make a movie and you'll get a movie that reflects that', but if a producer is looking for something that looks amateurish, that might sell
especially if every other applicant is showing perfect, flawless work
(maybe the project is just for some awful shakycam indie project or something)
my point is I don't think that author has any idea of why him not being a gamer is really a strength
they are writing a puff piece
This is true, but I think its notable that it is puffing for I think no real audience at all
the audience are people who will repost the article
unironically, THR doesn't really do reporting
Crazy how this mystery is solvable in the first minute if you lock in
articles are either puff pieces, summarizing box office results (that can also be puff pieces), or reviews (that can also be puff pieces)
some kind of joke in here about hollywood reporting being like hollywood accounting
also your statement was both unironic and ironic
listen grandpa, in this day and age no one uses "ironically" to actually mean "ironically"
listen grandson, your grandma was SUPER hot back in the day
next you'll expect people to be using "literally" correctly
How ironic, that he used ironic to portray ironic

He’s actually working on season 3 of mindhunter, David fincher told me

The Beatles movie
Yeah, he’s doing all 4 of the Beatles biopics
Even the biopics can't avoid MCUfication

The shortlist actors for Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow are rumored to be:
︀︀
︀︀-Claes Bang
︀︀-Matt Smith
︀︀-Sam Rockwell

︀︀(via @NexusPointNews | www.nexuspointnews.com/post/brainiac-shortlist-for-man-of-tomorrow-revealed-nexus-off-the-record))
Him or Claes Bang I would love
Sam Rockwell is a very interesting choice too
I could see it
Not familiar enough with Claes Bang
But I saw a clip of him from Dracula
I dont want Sam Rockwell solely because all id here is Mr Wolf
Since they’re particularly looking for actors who are buff and who actually look like Brainiac, I think they might be going the Colu origin route instead of the AI route
Which I’m fine with either but I prefer the Colu route because we really haven’t seen that done yet in an adaptation
Matt Smith as Brainiac just so he can recreate this scene ^^^^
Doctor Who to James Gunn villain pipeline must continue
Seeing Wicked this Friday
I have not seen the first one
My sister and mom are dragging me to go see it
Wicked is so great though! You've got time to see it!

I know I missed the theatre experiences conversation, but I want to share anyway. We were watching The Desolation of Smaug on a really hot day, got up to the point where || Bard says “No, I’ve had enough of dwarves.” and the power went out. 😂 ||
In terms of actual favourite though, Endgame and Treasure Planet might qualify if not for Frozen. That film was a genuine turning point in my ability to respond emotionally to media.
Endgame was the best theater experience I've ever had
It was SO hype to be there with everyone being so excited opening night, just nothing quite like it
I'm the most normal about this movie, don't worry!!!
yes because everything ive seen from everyone in this discord has shown me that yall are very normal the most normal about this movie
agreed
Spotify wrapped spoilers I guess?? ||Okay but the fact that they actually made a thank you message from Huntr/x in their studio was very cute and they also canonized the fandom name for their fans! "Hunters"!||
||well now I have a problem, because I barely use spotify these days, so I might not see that video||
I'm sure someone will post it to YouTube

oh, its that time of the year?
unsurprisingly, mine opened up with en Epic music
and another after
I listened to 192 genres? I didn't even know there were that many genres
wth
I usually get around 70 😭
ah, I forgot I gmed a small adventure for my old dnd group earlier this year. My top song is not from Epic but from Skyrim on loop during one (or several) sessions
all my top 5 songs in fact are skyrim, oblivion or pillars
oh, Jorge did come out on top 😮
I didnt listen to a single Epic song more times than one of my dnd session songs, but he is my top artist
I use Amazon music, heres what I got from the equivalent
Quick mod nudge, but for those just looking to talk about their music recaps, please head to #1378391089366696046 for that!
(I know, I started things in here, but that was because it was about the movie)
Oops, I'm sorry! I thought I was posting this in #1378391089366696046. That's my bad for not checking what channel we were on.
Moving my messages to the appropriate channel.
Seems we are getting our first trailer for Supergirl early next week
(This is my warning so you all have enough time to vacate the channel before I froth over this trailer)
Now watching:
oh good, I was wondering if you were going to roll in to For Good on friday totally confused (that WOULD be a very novel experience, basically coming into a show after intermission)
Movies pretty long so I probably won’t finish it today but who knows
No ryan you just have to lock in
Wicked
||”You’re green”
“I am?”
Oh this is gonna be hilarious||
Oh good🍿
I lowkey forget a lot of the Wizard of Oz lore it’s been a while since I watched the original
But this movie does a good job of explaining stuff
well, and it is a movie based on a musical based on a book that reimagines another book but uses visual cues from the movie adaptation of that first book
so, lore can shift depending on how you look at it
Wicked, one of the most successful fanfics of all time
Don't forget that the first book that got reimagined later ALSO started using elements kf the movie when its sequels came out
That title belongs to 50 Shades of Grey, it actually started as a Twilight fanfic
50 Shades of Grey is not fanfic anymore after it filed the serial numbers off. Wicked still is.
(Also I don't think 50 Shades got a beloved Broadway musical adaptation in addition to its theatrical adaptation, so I'd say wicked wins there too)
I mean, The Divine Comedy actually influenced people's religious beliefs
It is funny to call the Divine Comedy a fanfic but if I'm splitting hairs I don't think religious allegories count as fanfic because a religious adherent isn't really the same thing as a fan imo
there are lots of non-fanfiction things that influence people's religious beliefs
idk if fan fic or not fan fic really matters tho
even if things start as fanfic they can still be good
it was the topic at hand
but also Paradise Lost has the sexier Satan character
This was my point actually that Wicked is very beloved and is openly fanfic
Indisputably fanfic!
people say paradise lost justifies fanfic as high art, but I know, in my soul, there is nothing high about it
the more things change
and then it's fascinating because the musical is definitely more of a fic of the book than adaptation because the book is nowhere near as interested in the glinda/elphaba relationship
okay can i put the book of mormon musical in this as well ?
cause thats brilliant
and kinda fanfic?
WAIT HOLD THE HELL UP, MATT AND TREY WROTE BOOK OF MORMON MUSICAL ??????????????????????????????????????????????
i do think there is fanfic as a genre definition and fanfic as the modern cultural movement
(I am curious about Gregory Maguire's announcement of writing Glinda; A Charmed Childhood because like... I assume that goes into his world, but definitely sounds influenced by the musical)
DNA wise the steminist books are very fanfic
hahaha yesssss with the Lopezes (of Frozen and other disney movie musicals) doing the music
i really need to see the book of mormon live one day
I caught the tour once, it was pretty fun
it's very fun
It's pretty good
Book of Mormon musical is a different third kind of thing that I would not consider being in either category. It's about a religion, not a fictional work (therefore not fanfic) but was also written by outsiders of that religion, rather than the religious adherents themselves (therefore not like DC or PL)
and it cracks me up that the LDS church advertises in the program and there's usually a table of missionaries with copies of their BOM outside the theater (at least, they were there when I saw it on tour)
like... maybe the sequences where it talks about the history could fall into this "fanfic of a fanfic" concept but yeah, as a whole BOM musical is a story about missionaries than religious fanfiction
I don't think there's any way to describe Book of Mormon as a fanfic, I think the person who suggested that might not have seen it?
would you label it as just straight parody of religion then as a label ?
it's an original story, mostly comedy, but it's set in a present-day context about mormons
Isn't it just about a couple missionaries? Not really a parody of the religion, more a satire of their practices
Even then I'm not sure if that label is entirely accurate.
Some things just are and don't need a label
Oh, maybe Nosferatu since that was initially an unauthorized version of Dracula
Parody is probably closer, but from what I know of the story, it's not trying to make fun of the religion itself, so much as be funny while also being about Mormons
just a comedy...?
I think a parody would be more like, if it was heavily inspired by some other story
wicked isnt a fanfic
isnt book or mormon a satire on mormonism as a thing and not really the religion in it
almost
It's a fanfic in that Gregory Maguire didn't invent Oz and the characters, and it's not in the original Baum canon
Is that what a fanfic is though
Yeah?
what else would it be?
50 Shades and the recent Dramione books started as fanfic but got the IP filed off so they don't count
The what books?
There's like 3-4 romantasy books recently published that originally were Draco x Hermione fanfiction
I guess you could say that Wicked specifically is a broadway and later film adaptation of a fanfic
Fanfic implies media thats still in copyright
Filing the serial numbers off a successful fanfic is pretty common these days, it's a lot more than just 50 Shades that did it
Which AFAIK the original oz book wasnt when wicked was released
uhhh no it doesn't imply it needs to be in copyright
Oh wow lol
where did you get that definition?
And also an amateur writing
The Harry Potter fandom needs to chill
I don't see what copyright would have to do with being a work by a fan of a fictional property
also, lots of published professional writers (ie not amateurs) also write fanfic
I also wouldn't agree with the amateur thing as being part of the definition, yeah
Grey beat me
Mmm I don't know that copyright status necessarily matters on if it's a fanfic- like by definition fanfics are writing in a world you didn't create, with preexisting characters from the original works
Something something the like 3???? cults that harry potter fanfic has started
Just because those things are common aspects of a lot of fanfics doesn't make them definitional imo
I could at least comprehend someone saying that a fanfic should by definition be informally published, not professionally published and possibly not even self-published for profit
wait til you hear about snarry. and snamione. sometimes you just gotta stop caring about ships you don't like
I don't think there's a consensus there
I didn't realize Love Hypothesis was ReyLo until people started making jokes about movie casting
And then I look at the cover and oh ok, that's kind of obvious (I haven't read it)
yeah informally published is a big part IMO
I imagine there are some sort of underground for-profit fanfics out there so drawing a line there would be tough
me emerging from the depths of REAL old fanfiction land before ao3 existed: oh a m/f pairing of similarly aged people in the original media is bothersome? oh dear
citrus ratings and all that
i come from the time before they labeled fanfic!!!
Informally published is commonly the case with fanfics, but it's not part of the definition
Underground??
you were LUCKY if you got a "lemon/lime" etc
I don’t know why but I read that as Eeyore
Even then the main reason this happens is because most fanfics are of copyrighted works where you can't sell them, and as a result released online for free which means you don't need an actual publisher so the barrier to entry is far lower
people DO sell them and if caught usually just get a cease and desist. it doesn't stop being fanfic because someone put $ in their ko-fi
which I think is how Gregory Maguire got away with publishing Wicked in the first place, since he could riff on Oz in public domain
the "not being paid" for them is a legal protection to continue having fanfiction exist as it does, it's not definitional
Yeah exactly
I mostly just wonder, like in the case of Sherlock Holmes, is every person who writes a story about him from now on writing a 'fanfic', or is there some threshold that can be crossed where the term no longer feels appropriate?
oh lol Oz has its own wiki page on copyright status https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_status_of_The_Wonderful_Wizard_of_Oz_and_related_works_in_the_United_States
The copyright status of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and related works in the United States is complicated for several reasons. The book series is very long-running, and written by multiple authors, so the books often fall on opposite sides of eligibility for copyright laws. There have also been multiple adaptations across many different media, ...
Adaptations of older fictional works that are out of copyright are fanfic imo, but doubly so if the new work significantly reinterprets the original
because I was just thinking, I think Ozma is still behind copyright
Ozma was so good
people are still writing sherlock holmes fic today (yes even for the original novels) and it's not NOT fanfic because it's out of copyright
i also think that if a work reaches a certain level of cultural touchstone it becomes less fanfic and more work based on that world
Yeah that gets weird. I would probably call it an adaptation if it's covering the original stories, but then you get most modern shows being set in the modern day instead of being period pieces and then idk
nvm Ozma of Oz went into public domain in 1983 which is maybe why there was that weird disney movie with Tiktok etc.
If we think of it like a spectrum, BBC Sherlock and Elementary are more fanfic than something like the RDJ movies
that is a fine thing for people to feel personally but doesn't get to be The Definition
calling BBC sherlock a fanfic is insulting to fanfics
BBC Sherlock is overhated
there are some terrible fanfics, idk what you're on about
ebony dark'ness dementia enters the chat
Nah
I could go either way on that, but I do kinda feel like a book that's published professionally by a major publisher, it's fundamentally different from something on a tumblr blog...
On the other hand, 20 years from now when people can theoretically write their own Middle Earth stories, nobody's going to think of them as anything resembling canon, and 'fanfic' might feel appropriate
I do not like BBC sherlock dear lord
i rewatch hbomberguy's BBC Sherlock is Garbage all the time and i've still read fics worse
Shoot I was gonna share that one lol
that's part of the joy of fanfiction
Rings of Power
it gets to be bad and still exist
I also don't like it but that wasn't part of the discussion?
yes but honestly more soul to them
don't think it changes the point being made tbh
Also I like Sherlock 😭
like, I'm kind of stumped thinking of something that would be more successful than Wicked for this general category of successful fanfic
-# maybe the Witcher adaptations but those are adaptations made with the author's awareness
I do think Wicked is impressive in the level of adaptiveness it's had
Yeah I think we can agree not to count officially licensed adaptations as fanfic
My immortal
smh
the funniest thing about watching wicked was my mom trying to square it with the wizard of oz and me trying to explain over and over "it's not the same, it's not going to happen exactly the same"
I enjoyed Twisted more than Wicked
Original Wizard of Oz > Book version > Broadway version (very different) > Movie version
i can't just say "it's an au of wizard of oz" which would have worked so much better
"it's an au of an au"
which is a thing that DOES happen in fic land
au of an au of an au
OH Love Never Dies probably counts, for Phantom but I wouldn't call that successful
Was just thinking it'd be very funny if Stephen Schwartz decided to adapt Son of a Witch
Or any of the other Wicked sequel books
Idk, does it? It’s a sequel to the musical rather than the book
Speaking of murder mysteries
Haunting in Venice is up on Amazon Prime
For anyone jonesing for murder while they wait for Knives Out to leave theaters
WRT BBC Sherlock, I think they're horrendous murder mysteries in the classical sense but just fine as Sherlock stories
They are horrible sherlock stories
If I'm looking for classic murder mystery I'm looking at Agatha Christie anyway, not Arthur Conan Doyle
Sure, but "what if the Phantom moves to New York to operate a Carney Island sideshow" definitely feels like a fanfic premise
I love an hbomb essay, is my personal stance on it
Horrendous gay baiting
