It's 2025 and for some arcane reason it's still wild to me that there exists people who were born after 2000
I was born in 2000. I'm 25. It's weird to me too.
well, not exactly that ... just that there are adults born after 2000 I guess
2003 babyyyyyy
I blame covid cause really I have stopped keeping track of time as of 2019
Yeah where did the time go
Y2K didn't halt births
😭
I know! I knew what the movie was called, and I knew the gif I just did NOT put 2 and 2 together 😂
Bruh
Which LotR man do we think Cosmic will simp for
And why do you think ||it’s the Witch King of Angmar?||
|| Sauron||
Lurtz
||If Sauron was in his Annatar form, definitely||
|| I think there’s a chance she likes the armor, then when she learns Sauron is evil and everything she’ll be like nope ||
bruh
||You obviously havent met cosmic, thats a plus||
||the actual answer for his crashout-ness is Boromir||
This is what I thought I'd read in your first message lol
LotR all ||Cosmic would 100% take Denethor's side. Boromir is dead, all that's left is the spare. All is lost.||
Denethor was right
It is what I was gonna send but I thought “wait this would be funnier”
LotR ||this would be so funny considering Faramir is my goat and my hubby||
#DenethorDidNothingWrong
mr robot e8 ||WHAT DO YOU MEAN WTF||
If i could read all of those spoilers id be very angry/upset/happy/some other 4th emotion
How's it going
we sucking diesel over here
e8 ||I just got to the sister part||
🤐
mr robot e9 ||the dad hallucination has to be a double whammy or a misdirection or smth. some of the early scenes don't make sense if dad is a hallucination ||
||unless you substitute dad with elliot in those, huh ||
hmmmmmmmmmmm
the hobbits have extended cuts?
They do
And they are an improvement because, wouldn't you know it, a lot of what was cut was Bilbo And The Dwarves stuff
one of these days I'm gonna want to check out one of the fan edits of that, I don't think I've watched any of the movies since theaters
cosmic please watch LotR 🙏
I mean okay to be fair, who doesn't?
Ill find a day sometime! Im a lot more motivated now that my dad wants to see it wjth me
I watched LotR in VHS 😌
I think I was firmly into the DVD era by the time the movies came out, like the PS2 was the main DVD player of the house
I watched the extended editions on DVD with my dad and brother as a kid. Each extended edition was split across two discs. Hence the treatment of the series as six movies.
It was a short new year's tradition for my family to watch the extended edition DVD's as they came out
We had a Christmas Eve tradition to watch them in the cinema, because there's precious little else to do with that day...
Quick reminder that Phinneas and Ferb has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes
good
As well it should
I really want the return of pulp movies please 🙏
every few years we have a tentative return
recently we've had the new indiana jones (which was okay, solid 6.5/10), the new indiana jones game (which was great, 9/10) and the the rock movie (surprisingly good for a dwayne the johnson movie, 7/10)
They’re still around, plenty of terrible but fun action movies coming out
not the kind I want 😔
There is that Anaconda reboot coming out. I think it looks fun.
I think it’s actually a movie about a couple guys trying to reboot it
mhm
I should probs start on rewatching stranger things because I don’t remember anything about the last season other than || Kate bush|| but on the other hand ehhhhhh
depends how invested you are and how much you would enjoy a rewatch. If you don't care to watch the whole thing I'm sure there will be several articles and videos recapping everything before the new season drops
Yeah I can always read the Wikipedia episode summaries. It’s just eh… maybe I’ll just wing it
Historically they've had a "previously on" segment anyway
Its over when @molten jetty sees LA ace
No
Seated for Frankenstein 🔥
Its a very pretty film, enjoy!
Frankenstein time Soon ™
Ace announcement tomorrow
Screen goes black and fades in
”The hierarchy of power in the Grand Line is about to change”
Dwayne Johnson has been cast as Ace
I quite liked Frankenstein. Beautifully made. I haven't read the book so that doesn't factor into my opinion
I thought it was very good but quite different
Consistent with a lot of the themes of the book but quite different in plot and (to some extent) character
But very well made

I was hoping it’d be him
He was the most common fancast and Inaki visited the Cobra Kai set so they would do promo together and were friends
IM WATCHINH ONE PIECE LIVE ACTION TODAY RIGHT NOW

Cosmic are you okay?
Oh im doing great ander thanks for asking 🥴
...finish LoVM please I beg you 😭
me still looking at the cruel prince liveblog
Cradle
Cosmic is on such a similar wavelength as me
It’s nice to have someone else also getting the “PLEASE JUST FINISH SOMETHING” talk
yeah, but you're both on the enemy team
I never thought it was bad, just campy. It's very self aware I feel like
I dont think I've seen the latest season 🤔
I watched until when (CK) ||Terry Silvers sent the one guy to jail||
||I think it was worse the more it was like “all the kids are BRAWLING all the time”||
|| Yeah, I think if you're trying to take it seriously/realistically it's absurd, but I think the point is for it to be absurd ||
I think it's pretty par for the course for the franchise
MORE HAZBIN SEASON 2!
||"They say time heals all wounds but the wounds are what I miss"
Banger lyrics|| Hazbin S2E3
Aye
Hazbin S2E4 ||HELL YEAH ALASTOR BACKSTORY LET'S GO||
||I'm surprised that it's Rosie who owned his soul. I'm pretty sure we all thought it was Lilith.||
||I do wonder how Rosie has the power to just MAKE Alastor one of the most powerful sinners||
Is OPLA s2 out already???
Nah, comes out on March 10th
We had a pretty big casting reveal today tho
I think they also began production on season 3 already?? But IDK
They need to chill 😭
So it should be a shorter wait between 2 and 3 then it was between 1 and 2
This is how Iñaki’s gonna be moving if we get to Wano
Slowly, or completely disrespecting the source material?
||I love Niffty
Oh my god
That song was incredible||
Hazbin S2E4
||ANIMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
ANIME FIGHT SCEEEEEEENE||
Interesting
||What is Alastor planning with this exactly||
YOOOOOOOOOO
||SAYING "YOU'LL WISH YOU HAD STAYED GONE" IN A REPRISE OF ONCE WE GET UP THERE IN A REPRISE OF DON'T YOU FORGET IS CRAZY||
S2 of Hazbin is really solid so far god damn
||Also episode 4 does a better job convincing me that Alastor is an absolute monster more than the entirety of the rest of the series so that's fun||
So I have another three years before escaping this doubles in difficulty, good to know
Am I crazy for thinking Hoult actually has a shot for best supporting actor https://x.com/axeltalksfilm/status/1986197381977964949?s=46
Hazbin 2x4 ||While I have some mixed feelings on the episode, that bit was reeeeally good||
||well. Less mixed feelings and more "I need to see where we're going with this first"||
||I also wonder about this, because the terms were to make him "the most powerful sinner in hell", right? So does that mean Rosie isn't a sinner?||
||because surely the one making him most powerful would be more powerful||
Their musical composition is really on point
Like they're doing some great stuff
||It's weird because the wiki calls her a demon, not a sinner, but she's an Overlord, which thus far have all been Sinners. Faustisse apparently said she never died, but that was probably before S1. Also apparently she's only a 2 or a 3 on the Overlord power scale, in which case how is she able to make Alastor THE most powerful?||
||Something is weird about Rosie for sure||
||what's the difference between demon and sinner?||
Huhhh right
Everyone from Alastor to Blitz
||I suppose it's possible Rosie is like... metaphorically able to provide weapons or something that Al could use to be the most powerful. So she's not really the most powerful, because she doesn't do much, just trades arms. But through what she gives others can be stronger||
||or maybe she has a contract with someone like lilith that she can then pass power along to alastor through||
Very strange in any case
||I don't see why narratively she would need to act as a middle man between Alastor and Lilith, if the power just came from Lilith anyways. So I don't think it's the second.||
||I suppose it's also possible Rosie is <someone else>||
||like lilith or something. I've seen some people speculating that heaven!lilith is an impostor||
Decided to watch Fallout
Fallout ep1 ||Raiders
||
||You look like your mother
||
Best thing avout the fallout TV series it just feels like your watching a really high quality vod of a new fallout game
Its got so many vibes of juat watching a playthrough and I love it
It reminded me of playing Fallout 4 most definitely
Fallout ep1 ||You could say this is expedition 33. 😎 ||
Hazbin s2e4 || Glad others are puzzling over the Rosie thing.
I’m also curious about Alastor’s plan. Is he gonna set the Vs against Rosie? Or use the favor Charlie owes him somehow since the Vs can’t touch her now? ||
Hazbin S2E4 ||I'm assuming it's something like "If I'm no longer the strongest in hell, Rosie is not holding up her end of the bargain, therefore I don't have to hold up my end". He might even be planning on helping Vox with his plan so he gains power, believing Hell will deal with him but leaving him free of his contract||
||In terms of the "How can Rosie make him strongest if she's not the strongest", that's not really an issue for me, he made his deal before he died which I feel changes it. If someone just tried to make that agreement with another sinner already in hell, it wouldn't work like it did Alastor||
|| I also think he used whatever boost Rosie gave him to acquire a lot more power before he disappeared, with other deals he made and overlords he took down.
I do think there’s something more to Rosie now that we know she’s somehow tied up in this and is the one giving Alastor directions, but yeah have no issue with her being the source of his initial power. ||
|| kind of like a granted wish thing - since he was a mortal when the deal was made, like you said. She was capable of doing more maybe through a transaction like that than she would have been on her own? If that’s what you are getting at. ||
Warner Bros and HBO Max panels planned for CCXP 👀 👀

I AM HYPED
After Camp Half-Blood’s protective border is breached, Percy Jackson embarks on an epic odyssey into the Sea of Monsters in search of his best friend Grover and the one thing that may save the camp — the legendary Golden Fleece. With help from Annabeth, Clarisse and his newfound cyclops half-brother Tyson, Percy’s survival becomes essentia...
is there a reason they aren't saying season 2 here?
I don't know, but it very much is S2
Probably to catch people who haven't seen or don't know about S1
They better finish this fast, the child actor is already looking like an adult
Yeah Walker has grown soooo much
They're doing S2 and S3 back to back, so they're currently filming S3
good, I feel like their Nico actor is going to age since they cast him young
Gosh he went from adorable tween to weedy teenager already
Trailer looks fantastic though
debating whether i should get apple TV again to watch pluribus tomorrow
Get it to watch Slow Horses
I hope Percy Jackson changes its narrative philosophy so that the characters don't just
Insantly know everything they're dealing with like in S1
i've already watched the first two seasons, i'll probably get around to the rest at some point
It shocked me when they did the teaser and Walker’s voice had dropped.
I mean I don’t think they know all that?
I haven't watched S1 since it came out but I remember the guys walking on scene, spending five seconds, and then just going "Oh this is so and so from Greek mythology". They didn't let the situation simmer, they just knew what they were doing immediately.
Boys had their fun with Superman, now it’s real men’s turn https://x.com/homeofdcu/status/1986471995777687883?s=46
So we’re getting a trailer within the next 4 weeks
Ahhhh that’s what you’re talking about
What did you think I was talking about, out of curiosity?
I thought you were saying, knowing in advance what obstacles they'd face
Well. I didn't like that they did the Lotus Hotel knowing what it was in advance
That much is also true
I do think the Percy Jackson show has the specific grace of like At Least It Is Actual Kids And Not Alexandra Daddario
I'm willing to take casting and production antisynergies with a spirit of "at least they care to try"
yeah, definitely looks better than the sea of monsters movie too, imo
Thats a low, low bar
Can we get a crossover of God Emporer of Dune and Reckoners where ||the Reckoners have to team up with Obliteration because the God Emperor's only weakness is nukes?||
Gonna be nice having an adaptation where the Mist isn't broken by applying half a second of logic
That was my biggest issue with season 1 as well.
To an extent, I get it. A lot of the people watching the show grew up reading the books so they've known about all of these traps since a young age, but the writers really never gave the trio any chances to fail and I didn't like that
||It was absolutely maddening when they walked into Crusty's place and within two minutes were just belting out everything there is to know about the guy||
||The whole point of Crusty is that he was an insanely obscure character!||
If it was just Medusa that'd be one thing
But you can't take an obscure Greek figure and have the characters rattle off the whole myth within minutes of meeting the guy, that defeats the point
I think if they went with different traps or whatnot that might have gotten around it. Because it really felt like the writers saying, "at this point everyone simply knows not to talk to the troll under the bridge," so they skipped over getting stuck
Spoiler tag that probably
That said
Is there much that's obscure in Sea of Monsters?
I don't think there is, iirc most of it is from the Odyssey
I thought the casting was really good, I thought the relationship between Percy's mom and Poseiden was handled really well, and I loved how they ||changed the ending so that the team missed the deadline, but Posieden stepped in and forfietted the combat.||
I have high hopes for season two
hoult has no chance
im sorry
superman was good but this year is stacked
Yeah like series wide.
You said this ages ago. But honestly apple TV is producing some of the best series's right now
Imo its super worth to sub to apple TV for at least a month or two
yeah
best original shows
by far
Not just best originals
But like highest density of good TV shows
So I think its like the best deal in subscription TV right now
Hulu and netflix have the best non irignals
Plubrius is all loaded up and ready to go might watch it tonight or tomorrow
BrBa ||Forgot how stressful the s4e3 marie scenes are||
Mmmm Law and Order binging time
cosmic...
Yes :3
Pluribus S1 e1&2 ||Really strong start. One of the better pilots i've watched and i think episode 2 is even better because of how much built on it and showed the possibilities of how this could move forward. I was a little hesitant on the concept but i think it's being executed very well so far.||
-# please
Ill get to the last season! Eventually 😂
pluribus 1&2 ||small side note, when carol was talking about the book she was writing being about a pirate who sails on purple sand(she does mention green sand as a joke) i thought it was a reference to tress
||
Noooooooo

til there's a Mass Effect tv series
it's not like they lack stuff to adapt so I'm not too worried about them choosing to not do the plot of the games
I think I'd have the same reaction if they were adapting the games
or making a prequel
I really really hope it will be good
well they did Fallout well (imo)
it all comes down to who is actually producing and directing under the Amazon umbrella
It looks like they have the producer of Netflix's Daredevil onboard
unfortunately they also have Avi Arad's son as a producer...
we can only hope it won't end up being another me3/andromeda situation
I am assuming that the show will be doing stuff before the events of the games
It's set post-trilogy
it's cooked I'm afraid
... I see that if I had fully read the headline I would have learned this
xD
Give me a series about Legion and a squad of buds and call it The Legionnaires
12 episodes of the same "No data available" loop
Which colored explosion is canon
ME3 ||probably doing the destroy option||
Would it be right to consider Jack Sparrow to be an anti-hero? Or he just a full-fledged hero who happens to have a shady background?
Having only seen the first 3 films myself, I'd say he never really crosses into anti-hero territory. Ultimately, I think he's too good natured, and the films themselves are too light-hearted, for that.
Love to see Milly getting more work https://fxtwitter.com/discussingfilm/status/1986902589468991873?s=46
The Wire S1E8 ||dang, McNulty using his kids to trail a suspect is wild. I really don’t blame his wife.||
||Mcnulty is a pretty bad human being. Great Po-lice though||
Just watched Pluribus episode 1
Wow. That is some excellent sci-fi horror.
Also very nice seeing Rhea Seehorn again
Tmblr ads can be a true treat sometimes
omg there's a pt-br parody of Epic and it's so freaking funny
Bro you have no idea
My Adventures With Superman 4 (+ the very start of 5) ||I hope we dont spend too much time leaving Jimmy out of everything. Its just not a conflict I particularly enjoy||

||I'll take anyones' money if he givin' it away now - Namond
I'll take anyone’s money if he givin' it away. - Clay Davis||
||Show does such a great job of repeating some phrases but using them in different contexts. Great way to show how these grown adults like Davis still have the same mentality that a child does||
For those that have seen the movie, no she doesn’t say the curse word in this video. It’s edited out at just the right moment
Just watched the first Pluribus and it is excellent, I imagine the rest of the show will be somewhat different but I’m on board
I am trying to focus on the hermits who don't get enough views
Impatiently awaiting etho's upload
You should tbh
I’m having breakfast rn, I’m going to go watch Doc’s episode after I get some work done and I am so excited
I can’t wait to see (Hermitcraft S10 Doc + Twitchcon) ||Doc rip Scar a new asshole LMFAO||
||Doc’s vagueposting has been so funny||
Pluribus E1 (half way through) + ||The Expanse Books all|| ||So the mysterious signal was a DNA/protein chain definition? And it creates a hive mind? This is very protomolecule/builders coded||
boss baby moment
I'm not sure what I was expecting from Pluribus but it wasn't this
What an odd show
Downton Abby S5E1 ||I feel for her, but my god Edith has made the wrong choice about her daughter||
||On the other hand. I think Maggie Smith just called Mrs Crawley a friend
"There's nothing simpler than avoiding people you don't like. Avoiding one's friends, that's the real test"||
|| I had stopped watching by then but Edith making bad choices is very Edith||
God it’s so good to be back
I’m CACKLING
Iskall was my favorite 😭
I don't watch anything he makes anymore
Mumbo HC11 ep 1 ||Whaddaya mean Gem built a starter bridge
||
I love gem lol
Same ):
I thankfully kinda fell off watching him a few years before the Explosion™️
Predator Badlands || phenomenal film top to bottom. The music and sound design was masterfully done. Genna as a planet reminded me a lot of Patji but dialled up to 11||
||its gem what do you expect||
6 episodes into the second season of mr robot and i'm enjoying it a whole lot less than the first one tbh
Rewatching hbomberguy’s video about plagerism
I forgot how comprehensive his plagerism breakdown at the beginning is before he even gets to Somerton
There's a reason it's that long
I watched that recently and it's an utterly insane video
In addition to just how far Hbomber researched all the plagiarism topics he brings up, the extent of Somerton's plagiarism is absurd
Man is gay and claims to support recognition of gay people in media but does so by stealing the work of other gay people and not recognizing their work
hbomberguy.....
i have my takes on him
I need to watch that video at some point
My dad, who was a Halo Enjoyer back in the day but has not played much in the way of video games in the last ~10 years, stumbled into the Halo show on Netflix
He watched the first season of it in its entirety and was appalled
He was initially surprised he hadn't heard of it from my brother or myself until he saw for himself how bad it was
He will not be watching the second season
I saw that it's on Netflix and have no interest in it still
I know there's people who enjoy it and that's perfectly fine but it's very much not for me
I definitely enjoyed his content before everything, though mostly I feel bad that Stress decided to be collateral damage.
I think Joe Hills is my favourite, and one of the most seriously underrated / underappreciated imo.
What's your take on him
Im curious what poeples thoughts are on plubrius and what you would do in that situation because for me || I would ask so many questions about science and my past and conspiracy theories and like everything of the hive mind. So many poeple in my past I would ask about and im just curious about heaps of things. It would also be so spooky and idk if I could be sane with a scary hive mind thing||
e2 ||not even the science, but simple logistics of a hippie hivemind. how will they produce enough food for billions of people without cattle and bird farms? how do the deaths of people affect them? will hive mind progress science or just chill and smile at each other? will they keep making babies? what about people with illnesses, diseases, or disabilities? will they continue research into curing those? if the answer so, then how will they do that without animal test subjects? ||
Oh yeah totally how much of those logistics will be shown in the show will be interesting
Plubrius epp 2 || my paragraph above was more like immediate things I would ask but your totally right the logistics of it all are super interesting. Im curious as well how much the hive mind is lying or capable of lying. ||
||what if they go the other way, human test subjects. How much does one body matter to them?||
On thinking more about it tho idk if the food would be an issue

They did Alfred so dirty oh my goodness
Pluribus e1 is really cool
I really enjoyed both epps and love the premise
im going to be honest, im surprised theyre talking about 3 or 4 seasons for Pluribus
4 feels a bit long for this, think 3 would be fine
well we will have to see where season 1 goes but as it stands, definitely not
Its hard to judge imo with out seeing the rest of the season
Pluribus ||I think for me the premise, and I was a little hesitant before the series started as to its legs, is essentially a single Doctor Who episode||
||To make 4 seasons for me, theres going to need to be a lot of expanding||
||The first 2 episodes were wonderful though||
||I had the same feelings about the premise, the first two episodes won me over but it’s going to be a stretch to make this go for 4-5 seasons||
Pluribus ep 2 ||Not that I think the other unaffected people were right really, but I think the framing of the American in the Air Force One acting how she was with the American flag behind her etc, was interesting 😅 ||
TangoTek hc11 ep1 title ||WAIT HE'S DOING ANOTHER DECKED OUT!?
Like I'm super happy about that because the last one was awesome but WHAT.||
Hermitcraft Season 11!!
seen (and wanna watch more) grian, gem and etho thus far, but hopefully also mumbo and joel
So far I've watched Joe, Doc, Cleo, Gem, Pearl, Mumbo, and Etho. Might be it for me. I do wanna watch Bdubs too, and maybe Grian but I feel kinda guilty watching all the people who get the most views, not like Grian needs me watching lol.
Oh Cleo! I need to watch their stuff more consistently.
I've watched Mumbo and Etho so far. I'd like to get Grian and Tango and I should add Cleo to my list but I might try to stick with just them this season so I don't get completely overwhelmed with stuff to watch
It gave me a bit of a double take when people started using they/them for Cleo but it also made me happy that they just didn't make a big deal out of it
I’ve been watching Grian, Mumbo, Doc & Bdubs, I’m going to check out Etho & Scar’s videos too
I’ll probably end up seeing a lot more of people this season because Doc is neighboring a lot of people
I mostly watch Etho and Tango, and some Gem
I'm curious if folks are watching more people's first couple episodes and then will dial it back or if y'all always watch so many?
Back when I watched hc I only ever watched grian and usually mumbo and then any other relevant perspectives for fun storylines
Maybe I'll check out some people for the new season, could be some good background noise for work
I try to keep up with a bunch of them but usually fall off at some point 😭
I just love all their different styles
I’ve slowly expanded over the years, I have always at start of seasons tried to make efforts to watch more but often they’ve faded away
I’ve watched Mumbo, Grian, & Iskall consistently for the longest (although stopped really watching Iskall like a year and a half prior to the incident)
I started watching Doc near the end of Season 9 and have religiously watched him since, and I started watching Bdubs on and off at the start of Season 10 and since around a year ago I’ve watched a lot of his videos
I suspect I’m not going to follow through with watching Etho & Scar, but we’ll see how it goes
If you’re looking for ‘background noise’, Doc’s a good one, he makes ~1 hour videos weekly that are at a nice pace as he pulls off some of the craziest technical shenanigans on the server
I used to watch Keralis and DMac sometimes
Never really followed any seasons of hermitcraft though
I also watched Marriland for years before he was on hermitcraft, think I had mostly stopped when he joined
I watch a lot and usually follow them through the season. There's a lot of time in the week to cover for my second screen after all.
tho doc I usually watch at faster than 1x heh
Yeah he talks very slowly
Yeah but I deeply enjoy the vibes
I’m fine with the slow videos, I always have a time every week where I can just sit down and watch Doc get up to whatever insanity he’s up to this week
Maybe this season I'll try to keep up with more people
I think s10 I kind of slowly fell off to just grian, and so when he slowed down kind of just stopped following hc entirely
So I'd rather have multiple people to follow now
Some great fanart I thought I would share https://x.com/pizza990/status/1987552903901712825?s=46
Marvel is lacking in a set as iconic as the Trinity or even just World’s Finest (Batman and Superman alone)
Artist is pizza990 on Twitter and all socials, he’s a really great artist so go follow him!
Wolverine is just unfortunately doing his own thing with the mutant half of marvel 99.9999% of the time
And Spidey is only an on again off again on again off again Avenger if you want to call either Cap or Iron Man as the other point of Marvel’s top 3
I think in terms of iconic characters, DC has Marvel beat by a landslide
My point wasn’t about iconic characters, it was about iconic team ups that aren’t a permanent team
So not the X Men or the Justice League or the Avengers but I’d say, Spider-Man had been consistently hanging out with Captain America and Wasp for decades and everyone used them as a shorthand for “character from Marvel”
Fantastic Four are better example but they always move as a set
Also wow. Marvel really doesn’t have an iconic standalone female character equivalent to Diana do they?
MCU did wonders for the Avengers
Before that they were basically a B-team compared to the F4 and X-Men
Every marvel female character is a team character first and a solo character rarely
Hero*, there’s definitely a lot of solo villains
Fair but that still doesn’t make them equivalent to Wonder Woman
(I do love Emma Frost very much tho)
wonderwoman isnt big four
im sorry
its batman, supes, spiderman and maybe hulk and maybeeeeee wolverine
She absolutely is IMO
nowhere near as famous as supes, batman or spiderman
Shes an honorary UN ambassador tbf
I heard of Wonder Woman before the big movies, that makes her popular
shes popular but nowhere near as much as the other people there
by what metrics is the Hulk more popular than Wonder Woman?
TBF I can see the conversation for Hulk but not Wolverine
Wonder Woman is THE female superhero
Hulk was popular even in the 60s and 70s
Nobody is doing it like her
Everyone know who Wonder Woman is
If you ask someone to name a female superhero, they’re stating with Wonder Wonan
even if you go by just comics sales (which sort of misses the point), Hulk isn't even beating The Phantom
Nobody is going start a list of superhero’s with the hulk
The only thing going against Wonder Woman is that a lot of writers over the years have struggled writing her
Not even a list of avengers characters will start with the hulk
idk wolverine got so popular he ruined marvel for a bit but yeah
Since when
lmao
Hulks one of the most popular superheroes
Uh since Iron Man (2009)
Hulk is not that popular
Hulk is a popular supporting character but that’s kinda it
before the 2000s especially he was insanely popular
Hulk is so popular he was the first marvel hero to be recast in the MCU
clearly more popular than Wonder Woman by that metric, she hasn't even been recast yet
if fumbling the movies insanely badly was a metric for popularity than batman would be the least popular hero ever
I feel like a lot of the Wolverine popularity hit an all time high with Hugh Jackman tbh, sure he was known before that but not by the mainstream
Thank you to George Perez, Kelly Thompson, Greg Rucka, Gail Simone and of course her creator William Moulton Marston
Wolverine was quite popular in the 90s during the trend of making everything extreme but that stuff hasn't aged well
see also: deadpool, cable, and all the other MacFarlane characters
Hulk hasn’t got a movie in the MCU since the first one everybody forgets exists
Tbh even Marston just used her because he had a thing for bondage
Because they canibalized Planet Hulk for Thor Ragnarok
because movie rights problems
but notably it was still an Xmen thing by and large, not Wolverine by himself
Not true, he also had a thing for soft femdom. Sorry “loving submission to gentle female authority” which he believed would save the world
Hulk was popular enough they were able to sell his movie rights
And the movies actually came out
It’s how Sony can still make spider man character movies
Never forget the glory of Morbius
also notable that of the non Marvel produced Marvel movies in the 2000s, The Incredible Hulk was uh... not the most popular
Man was a hero
He also invented the lie detector test
Which notably doesn’t work
Since we’re talking about Wonder Woman just going to share this now
Wonder woman is popular but not big 4 popular
Box Office Grosses for nonMCU Marvel movies in the late 2010s:
X-men Last Stand (2006) - $460 million
Spider-Man 3 (2007) - $896 million
The Incredible Hulk (2008) - $266 million
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) - $302 million (this is truly damning because this movie really stinks)
because all of her villains are really bad
0 respect for Mouse Man smh
one would expect the 4th most popular superhero to do a bit better than this
0 respect for Dr Psycho, which is the correct amount of respect for him
yeah one would expect superman to do better than36.7m in 1987 money
I'm not sure what point you are making, Superman IV was horrible and performed horribly
most of the movies I listed were also not well received and yet handily beat the Hulk movie
Superman IV: The One Where He Throws the Nukes into the Sun
all of them
He throws all the nukes into the sun and this saves the day somehow
do you perhaps have a movie from the correct millennium which demonstrates your point?
my point is that box office numbers demonstrate nothing
Superman IV was a hot pile of garbage but it did give us this actually amazing scene https://youtu.be/v53yiG9-_xs?si=AHuM4khDe0Pli1Fb

Aquaman is obviouslly the most famous DC character
if you want more I can do more:
Hulk (2003) - $245.3 million
X2 (2003) - $407.7 million
Spider-Man (2002) - $826.8 million
my point is box office numbers /=/ fame
we've asked several times what you think does = fame
1970s Superman and Lex Luthor: why won’t this guy let me get away with various forms of land fraud???? He doesn’t even really seem invested in stopping me???
2020s Superman and Lex Luthor: I created ||a whole war ||to kill a guy who hasn’t even heard of me!!! I hate him so much!!!
recognizinability
do you have anything to back up your position?
if not, I think I will have to quote you and say "lmao"
if were assuming like western traditional superheroes right i should clarify this is important for my argument
well we aren't talking about Mickey Mouse or Goku so
Goku sweeps any western comic book character easily
He’s so insanely famous it isn’t even fair
You can go anywhere in the world and see Goku graffiti
Goku, Hello Kitty, and many Pokemon
I saw Goku graffiti in Athens and in Mexico City
atp luffy is more famous than goku i feel
Hello Kitty isn’t a superhero. She’s a normal young girl who happens to be cat
is Goku a superhero?
if gokus a superhero sun wukong is and he clears everything else weve talked about so far
Goku is Sun Wukong
I imagine that many more people who know Sun Wukong also know Goku than the reverse
What????
insane take
I'm aware how popular Sun Wukong is in china
I am saying that I imagine that Goku is also popular in china
and outside of china Goku is much more popular than Sun Wukong
Probably one of the most famous characters in history lmao
.
we aren't talking about history, obviously Sun Wukong has an advantage by being a foundational myth in one of the most populous and oldest cultures in history where as Goku was created in the 1900s
Got a free trial for Apple TV to watch pluribus
and honestly i wouldnt call goku the most popular manga character either
I can’t thing of a single one above him
luffy from onepiece
I mean
Sailor Moon is more popular than Luffy
look at recent happenings in indonesia and nepal
And even she’s less famous than Goku
Since its debut in 1984, the Dragon Ball franchise by Akira Toriyama has had a considerable impact on global popular culture. In 2015, the Japan Anniversary Association officially declared May 9 as "Goku Day" (Japanese: 悟空の日, Hepburn: Gokū no Hi) after the main character Son Goku; in Japanese, the numbers five and nine can be pronounced...
I mean noones flying a goku flag at revolutions
Goku is less politically charged as a character than Luffy.
in terms of sales for their original series, OP is at around 5 million per volume average, while DB is around 6 million per
i'd say DB probably still wins in considering it's just been around for longer and thus has more cross-generational popularity, but it's closer than you'd think, and depends a lot on which country you're asking about
i also don't think i'd agree with this
if were using this argument goku was inspired by sun wukong
Yes, I know
Also there is no concept of a baseline wonder woman story
most heros lack such a baseline story
Batman comes to mind as one who has one: the detective story
Batman, superman,spiderman have them
Spider-man doesn't have a baseline story, he has the general characterization as "young, working class superhero"
and that is by no means universal to his characterization
There is. She is molded from clay and magically given life. Later, Steve Trevor washed up on Paradise Island. Diana wins a contest and the right to return him to Man’s World and travels there to become a hero
Comic fans will know that sure but like normal people dont
Most people know that batmans parents died or that superman was an alien who came to earth
implying that most people know what wolverine's origin story is
most xmen writers don't even know what his origin is
yeah but xmen writers are idiots
do you know what his origin story is?
||this is a bit of a trick question, Wolverine has a canonically varying origin story ||
gets chemical bath
Wolverine ||in most version of the canon he was already a mutant with a healing factor. Depending on what version you read he also had claws||
||I'm not sure what chemical bath you are referring to, do you mean where he got the adamantium skeleton?||
claws was the bath right i dont remember i purposefully avoid xmen stuff
You doubt just how popular the xmen movies were
?
They explained his background extensively in those movies
nah im saying wolverine is popular
I think at least as many people know the "came from an island of women" for WW as know the "uh... chemical bath?" for Wolverine
Most ppl could easly say uuhh healing factor metal claws someone put in him i rekon not even chemical bath
Just like "old man cant die claws metal someone put them in him" if you just grab a random off the street and ask what his background is and who he is
yeah I doubt that "most people" could do that
Really?
I imagine most people wouldn't even know the name if you showed them a picture
Are we just too many years from the og xmen movies now ?
the og xmen movies were not seen by most people
even if we were days removed from them coming out my opinion wouldn't change
What???
Nah I put some heavy doubt on that statement
you think that at least 50% of the world's population saw Brian Singer's Xmen?
The og xmen movies were mega popular at the time
even just 50% of the US population?
That is not what im saying
Smh my head
Pluribus ep 2 ||this show is so damn interesting. This dinner scene is phenomenal||
I know right I just cant get the what if I was there, what would I do questions out of my head
Anyway i already said this but its the big 3 and then for a fourth most popualr its kinda hard
Plubrius ep 2 || I just really dont know what comes next for this show, which is fascinating really looking forward to epp 3||
Even then the drop off from superman to batman and spiderman is not negligible
No
Supermans by far the most famous
I think Spider-Man and Batman have him beat in the famous department tbh
nope, Superman for a while (and still is to an extent) was viewed as too American to really be globally popular
Pluribus ep 2 ||why don’t they just kiss the others to join them?? Worked well enough in the beginning||
ehhhhhhh i dont agree with this
even if you just look at the comics, Batman typically has two monthly solo series (Batman and Detective Comics) as well as his team up series with Superman where as Superman just has the one solo series (also currently they both have Absolute runs)
Superman
Spider-Man
Batman
Wonder Woman
Iron Man
Captain America
Hulk
Wolverine
The Flash
Thor
I think that's my list in order
supermans probably one of if not the most famous american made fictional character
Yeah superman is easly the most popular and well known superhero
not only is he not the most famous DC character, but no DC character can beat Disney's heavy hitters (specifically Mickey Mouse)
Mickey mouse isnt even the most famous person in the mickey mouse universe
thats donald duck
Pluribus ||carol is super unlikeable I must say||
good point, he's also probably more well known than Superman
Idk if I agree with this
cause like 99% of the world does not care about mickey mouse
but more to the point, Spider-man is also more popular
Darth Vader is as well I'd guess
you understimate supermans popularity
Oh so like what are we actually discussing here i thought it was like just super heroes
started with discussion about the top 4 western superheros
Easly superman, Spiderman, batman then wonder woman in that order
Hulk ain’t doing this:
I’m not sure about that post MCU

||But Tramell Tillman is so perfect as him!||
I think that actor is in enough things
Idk if I need him in EVERYTHING
He is, but I keep imagining Donald lol
My dad and I cheered when Tramell Tillman showed up in the last Mission Impossible movie. He's such a good actor and it's cool to see him outside of his star-making role.

But on the other hand... Eh. I've got other things I wanna see/read/play too, and tv just isn't a medium that's ever able to keep my attention

Toy Story should have ended with 3 https://fxtwitter.com/discussingfilm/status/1988338187845201929?s=46
I don't think I even watched past the first one, but don't really care if they milk it
I never saw 4
4 is very good in my opinion. But like 3 it was also a very conclusive and beautiful ending. I think there is a chance they will get that lightning in a bottle perfect ending again, but I have to ask, why risk the reputation of the franchise for that chance.
Yeah 4 was p good but it didnt need to exist
because Inside Out 2 made a bazillion dollars
there is an appetite for sequels to their movies that seemed to have a definitive end
Also the whole “tech is going to replace the toys” thing is kind of retreading old ground as they already made fairly good TV movie about that.
I mean no movie needs to exist. I think 4 does enough new and interesting things to justify its existence. But that’s just my feelings.
I know people who think 3 didn’t need to exist.
4 is probably not my favorite, that is either 2 or 3. But I think the message 4 has about self worth is really important, ||especially when you consider that Woody has constantly defined his worth in relation to his kid. And each movie is him growing in that aspect.||
I do understand not liking 4 because of feeling that it contradicts 2, but ||I see Woodys choice in 2 being him chosing how the people who care about him value him (Andy, Buzz, the rest of the gang) even if it might not last forever, over the way the way the world literally values him.||
Also I get finding Forky annoying.
But the fact that 5 is somehow bringing ||Woody back|| makes me concerned. So low hopes.
I dont like 4 because ||I think it’s thematically disrespectful. The whole point of 3 was Andy growing up and passing the toys onto a new kid who could cherish them and love Woody like he did. It’s a new beginning and a perfect ending. 4 ruins this in every way. ||
Fair ||but kids are going to be kids. They play with the toys that they want to play with, and we know from other Toys Story stuff that she did play with Woody for a while, but he wasn’t her favorite and she moved on. That isn’t and shouldn’t be a mark against her. It just leads to Woody learning that he can make the choice to move on as well. I think if Andy knew where he was at the end of 5, he would be happy (If he doesn’t get traumatized by learning that the toys were alive)||
I liked 4.
I don't remember it at all, but I liked going to watch it in college with friends.
I did not however, like the puppets

mmmmm do i like brennan enough to be willing to watch mythical kitchen... i am going to have to think about that one
this is for referance the 1st time i havent gotten the ick from the other guy hes sitting next to if thats anything
most of the time i get the ick from that guy so fast but idk mabey brennan was enough of a vibe to help my brain cancel out the ick
if that makes any sense
well that's good, yeah i do not like josh's vibes usually
there's just something about the way he acts that gives me a bad feeling
he gives me vibes that there is something behind his eyes that would mean he is a person i dont like irl
its so hard to put that on poeple sometimes but theres just something about him that makes me not want to be around him or listen to him
Agreed this has so so many history of brennan facts and just brenannisms and other stuff like that
Dex 😭
this is interesting to hear because I've started to really enjoy these videos, they're great background noise for when I'm at work. Though I will say he feels like he's trying to be Sean Evans and it doesn't work quite as well
Sean Evans has such Just A Guy energy that works great for Hot Ones and really disarms the guest, and Josh doesn't quite have it I think
But I listened to the Alan Tudyk and Matpat ones today and they were great, a lot of really genuine stuff they talk about
i definitely think the Last Meal series is pretty good stuff
a little surprised to see it come from Mythical, but not a complaint
Superman: “I wonder how I can stop Lex Luthor from destroying Metropolis”
Average Jimmy Olsen subplot:
I must admit I am not sure about the power balance between Jimmy and Gorilla Grod.
Maybe they should do someone more on Jimmy’s level. Like Darkside

fell down the hole of watching hbomb's plagiarism video again and it was honestly surreal knowing it's not even two years old but how different it is to catch people who don't write their own stuff because genAI has taken over everything now
lazy hacks don't even do the bare minimum work of finding their own sources to steal from anymore, they just ask an ai to steal it and regurgitate it for them 😔
hbomb's video is still great though 🙏
Poldark 1.8 ||I didn't realize this was the finale. Crazy episode. I can't believe they killed off his baby. Shout out to Demelza for being consistently in the running for best character (she's behind Verity for me just a little bit, even though she's making dumb choices)||

Hazbin S2E5 ||Oooh, I love the idea that Lucifer's punishment is that he is the king of Hell, but he's completely impotent and is forced to just DEAL with sinners, he can't hurt them in any way. Hazbin S2 is awesome
It’s basically because YouTube themselves out and clarified this little line I’m highlighting.
“Transformative work” means they’ll allow it. If it was an article, then the transformation is turning it to video
Ethically bad, legally permissible.
And you know people, as long as it’s legal they’ll do it to make money which is why hbomb’s video feels more like a relic of a previous era every day in the YouTube landscape
you say that like it was common for people like Somerton to get in legal trouble before AI
Oh no, what I mean beforehand was it was just a few channels since before YouTube never outright clarified what that vague ass rule 1 means in fair use
Don’t wanna overstep a rule you don’t know the full extent of
After they outright said “yah just turning it into a video is enough”, that broke the damn
The genie is out of the bottle now with that decision and it can never be put back
Severance all ||Honestly theres a lot of weird unexplained tech things, so that kinda thing is unexplained. ||

‘AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH’ final runtime is of 3 hours & 15 minutes.
The longest film in the trilogy.
(Via: https://t.co/o0BnQ5R1gu)
Im always up for a long visual spectacle
i thought they were making five movies what do they mean trilogy
Might be a error on the accounts part
WP says film 4 is in filming, and 5 is in development
They're doing 5!?
Actually looks really good https://fxtwitter.com/discussingfilm/status/1988609938747433398?s=46

Man, I only found out that a third Avatar movie existed when my coworker mentioned it today, and it's apparently coming out next month?
Also, are they seriously going with four elements theme?
ATLA called, they want their name and magic system back
Cameron started working on the whole saga immediately
sheesh, bold
probably well-earned confidence, given those movies make their money back and then some, but still, bold
...also, if last movie was water and this one is fire, which element is movie 1?
or is it like eevee, you get the base version first before they evolve into your vaporeons and flareons and whatever the air variant is?
I think movie 2 established they were air from what ive heard
still havent seen it
air, water, fire, earth, heart?
1st one is totally air
honestly tho i really like the worldbuilding and the visual spectacle of it all
so ill keep going back to cinemas and watching these because they keep delivering on that promise of fun worldbuilding and amazing visual spectacles
Apparently part of the fifth movie will take place on Earth, wild
tentative title, "The Quest for Eywa"
I think they actually said much of the fourth movie too
maybe the Avatars will invade Earth and the noble humans have to fight them off
with beautiful mecha CGI
The Earth stuff in the fifth is Neytiri visiting
but yeah, I think Cameron has hoped for at least 5 movies ever since the first one was successful, with the understanding that if 2 bombed, they might still finish 3 but probably not 4 and 5
Theyve already filmed a third of 4 if i understand correctly
indeed, though I think that remained true that they wouldn't have actually finished the footage, they just had principal photography done
doesn't matter now, the second movie was a success and the rest is greenlit now
It's really funny how the Avatar movies are extremely popular exclusively because of the visual spectacle
Nobody cares about the storytelling or anything
i, dont know that that's true
Actually that is a different word
i definitely see people discussing the characters and story
I think Cameron just understands how to tell a very simple story and not screw it up or overcomplicate it
like it would be so easy to screw up Avatar's storytelling and make people less interested in watching it
OH MY GOD ||I MISSED THAT VOD SAID "WE'LL MAKE HELL GREAT AGAIN" IN VOX POPULI|| Hazbin S2E5
I deeply dislike / hate the worldbuilding of Avatar and while the spectacle of the first movie was impressive for its time at this point I don't consider them exceptional.
I went back and rewatched it several years ago and the CGI was wildly out of date
It's got this thin veneer of hard scifi to it that gets ignored so flippantly that it feels disrespectful to people who actually care about hard scifi as a genre.
I'm really hoping the Project Hail Mary movie is good and lives up to the book tho. That will be a big mainstream W for hard scifi fans.
I'd be a little surprised if they meaningfully bungled it
Hollywood is for whatever reason consistently good at adapting sci-fi
And of course The Martian is excellent
PHM plays to established core competencies
The trailer looks very good at least.
I feel like 90% of the credit goes to Kubrick doing 2001 and treating it seriously
if there were a similar adaptation of a fantasy book back in the day then I think Hollywood would be better at those adaptations imo
And Star Trek
Not an adaptation but laid the foundation for proficiency in sci-fi
Can't think of a mid/late 60s analogue for fantasy
Jason and the Argonauts
granted that's got the veneer of Historical Epic which hollywood was well versed in already
but it was absolutely a special effects master class in a similar way that Star Wars was for sci fi
i think it depends on what you call fantasy. do greek epic retellings or Shakespeare adaptions count?
I do very much mean in the modern sense
then yes I agree
i think things like the western clogged up what would have been epic fantasy's market
It is a different kind of story than the Shakespearean or epic stuff and Hollywood just hasn't ever really figured out how to make that happen with several specific notable exceptions
Historical Epic was more the thing that sponged up potential fantasy adaptations (also the fact that sci fi as a genre was just seen as slightly higher class)
Why is LOTR ineligible?
No, I meant for this discussion
The discussion began by talking about how Hollywood has a longer track record of good sci fi adaptation compared to fantasy adaptation
So its eligible but also sort of the first (other than something like Wizard of Oz)
It isn't. It is one of the notable exceptions
There was nothing like Lord of the Rings prior and there's been really nothing since
Game of Thrones is the other one and it inspired a number of notable clones all of which seem to be on their last legs if they exist at all anymore
including GoT itself
LOTR was a unique culutural moment that could not even be replicated with the Hobbit
Does Disney count as fantasy adaptations of Hans Christian Anderson?
Animation is different imo
Similarly, the Wizard of Oz
I think they'd file it under "fairy tale" rather than "fantasy"
Wizard of Oz counts, as does Jason and the Argonauts (imo)
Which like what's the difference but also I think we all know the difference
whereas it seems there is a prestige sci fi film every few years (dune, interstellar, blade runner 2049, etc...)
The mid-2000s were mad with sci fi adaptations
those star trek movies that were never that good
How dare you
the fantasy equivalent of that never gets made
Just ignore the odd numbered ones
Harry Potter is another elephant in the room but I think can reasonably be said to be distinct from the rest of the modern fantasy movement especially as compared to fantasy of the last ~30 years
It's also not really high fantasy, which I think is what people are looking for more in a fantasy film
i think for whatever reason mainstream audience have a block around secondary world stories. plenty try to make it "our world but different" to dodge that label
well harryp otter was popular but not good
I don't think you even need that distinction. The closest analogue from "traditional" modern fantasy I can think of to Harry Potter is that misbegotten Dresden Files show
I can't. I think all fantasy adaptations are off the table for the foreseeable future
And I don't think Dresden would be near the top of that pile anyway
wot really had terrible timing
fantasy really struggles in the movie market
I do find it interesting that all the big fantasy movies are classed as exceptions .
Don't know that it's wrong to do so, but...
They are in that they are sort of a once a decade phenomenon
what even are the best fantasy films of all time
amazon threw wot under the bus because they're in way too deep with RoP IMO
with sci fi you just end up listing what are considered the best movies of all time
Lord of the rings
Wot threw itself under the bus with that writing
not so with fantasy, i think, excepting lotr (which is overrated anyways)
Are they? Hating LotR is the modern edgy take these days, it has plenty of voice at the table
What is there to over rate
A couple of the Narnia movies were good
The battles are amazing, the visuals are fantastic, the story is amazing
It's a true epic, well produced and brilliantly acted in every sense
I think the haters might disagree with you on all of that steel
The commonly cited "Jackson's LotR is Bad Actually" takes revolve around cutting Tom Bombadil, how Aragorn's story is presented, and "mishandling" Faramir and Theoden
not the channel for an extensive debate on the subject but the main thing I will say for amazon giving WoT a lack of support is how it wasn't pushed for any awards - at the very least the costuming (especially the costuming), set design, visual, and practical effects were great and should have been put forward and lobbied for various awards by the studio.
Pfft as if there's any modern movie battle that holds up to helms deep
i think the lotr is like an 8/10 film trilogy and probably better than the books
10 year old Grey's agonies: Treebeard's eyes weren't green!
Also, cutting tom is controversial???
This convo does actually have me trying to think of fantasy movies that were big hits other than LotR and I legitimately can't think of anything
Incredibly so
see!
stares into the middle distance, reflecting that Helm's Deep is no longer considered modern
its a classic car at this point
It's 20 years old
They are sometimes in the extendeds, Gollum and Treebeard both have shifting eye color depending on the scene. Or at least they used to
If it were to be made today there would be way more CGI
None of those beautiful miniature sets
idk why everyone is surprised, Endgame is six years old
I don't know if more modern publications have fixed this but sometimes Gollum's eyes are brown and sometimes they're blue
I can think of lots of fantasy adaptations that are animated
there is a world where fantasy took over TV but it never quite got there
the witcher somehow got four seasons
Five
Next season is already in the tank

They filmed it in one shot
His Dark Materials was great
Hobbit is a LotR extension and wasn't nearly as well recieved, Harry Potter probably counts but is more urban fantasy, Narnia was fun but not that big these days, Percy Jackson and Avatar are trainwrecks, probably more stuff I'm forgetting
is there any fantasy even that isn't an adaptation? scifi has its adaptations but also a world of stuff that was film only/film first
Fantasy TV adaptations are doing a bit better but we just covered several failed attempts in recent years
Huh
There's also the whole conversation about how Game of Thrones got what Hollywood thinks of as "the football crowd" because it had sex in it, or at least that's the story they told themselves when GoT was at its peak and foiling every convention Hollywood had about classifying audiences
I can't think of any
were some of the old things like Highlander adaptations?
At least not more classic type fantasy
Most Ghibli movies , on the animated side
And fantasy animation (both TV and film) is fantastic but stuck with the stereotypes of being for kids
for the purposes of this convo, i'm not counting outside hollywood nor animated
For whatever reason sci fi just has a much better reputation than fantasy, people have different preconceptions.
There've been some truly abysmal soapy TV shows as well
The only thing I can think of is the sorcerers apprentice
there has been TERRIBLE scifi tv, but like... imagine if that's all that scifi had, was like, Andromeda
Legend of the Seeker comes to mind
And that didn't do very well lol
Pirates of the Caribbean, if you consider that an adaptation.
Goes back to pre movie times
Oh my gosh I forgot that movie
I wonder if it’s because there haven’t been good fantasy movies, audiences don’t care for fantasy movies (seeing it as “nerdy stuff” that is pointless compared to “intelligent” scifi), or Hollywood just assumes audiences won’t go watch fantasy
featuring Kevin Sorbo
Probably a little bit of all that
it was the adaptation those books deserved tbf
Fun fact, I actually witnessed the car chase scene being filmed when I was like 7 in NYC
I would rather not imagine that world Grey
Fantasy was for kids
Science Fiction (could be) for the discerning gentleman
I think that's actually still more fairy tale than fantasy
It was an adaptation????
lmao
I think that’s the vibe yeah
It was a Terry Goodkind adaptation yeah
I love that movie, but it is technically an adaptation
In a similar way The Boys or Deadpool become popular because it’s for “adults” unlike those kiddy stupid comic book movies
Look at Game of Thrones
It’s popularity comes from gore and sex in a lot of ways
The fantasy elements are almost secondary
Only technically, it really was mostly trying to be its own thing
Game of Thrones toned down the gore and sex after the first few seasons, when they knew the audience was hooked
Back when they could still lift GRRM's dialogue
The sex was largely toned down because the actresses demanded that they stop being treated so degradingly
atm I would say Stranger Things is probably the most successful / popular original fantasy show
listen, i didnt say it
But was it popular because it was well written?
Some of the best parts of GoT early seasons were original
(I’m a huge GoT stan, but there is a reason non-fantasy fans watched it)
it sustained interest bc it was well written
I wouldn't say that tbh
I think it certainly helped
HBO had other shows filled with gore and violence
plenty of HBO shows had boobies and dongs
it had a few original scenes that were pretty good
As it happens quality does still attract attention
Like if GoT were more fantastical with more magic, would it still have been popular?
it turns out that sex still sells
Yes I think so. D&D just fundamentally dislike the fantasy stuff
i think GOT sold itself as a mature, high quality story that was must seen tv. the sex and gore was part of that, but so were the characters and storylines
I do think GoT was helped strongly by being very... stereotypically european fantasy
HotD was much more faithful to the fantastical elements of the world and was better recieved than any of the later GoT seasons where the fantasy stuff was most suppressed
Hard to say. Hollywood would almost certainly say no, and I think that's borne out by the lower fantasy stories they've erred on the side of choosing (WoT being probably the highest fantasy among them), but I don't know that I'd agree
like there isn't a lot of secondary world baggage / lore that you need to learn / understand to engage with GoT
i also dont agree that game of thrones was only popular because of the sex and gore, same as how i dont think the boys is only popular because of the sex and gore.
GoT S1 ||the absolute biggest draw of S1 of GoT was killing off Ned imo||
Not sure I entirely agree with that
I mean it’s hard to say, right? Like Hollywood thinks audiences don’t like fantasy, but whether they do or don’t is hard to say because of the way it’s seen as more “childish” by its very nature.
WAIT SHOOT I FORGOT THE D&D MOVIE
telling gritty stories wherepoeple die and there are "realistic" adult themes in a well produced and well funded tv show is rare
thats not fantasy
is it
Dnd movie was great. Not a hit in general audiences though.
and i think this is what poeple latch onto much more than the surface level sex and gore
3rd is a bad spy thriller action movie
There's never been a story that's both fantasy and mystery before
4th is very not horror but horror inspired mystery
Idk, I think general audiences liked it.
afaik the recent dnd movie was a hit with gen pop
I was going to follow up with this but I am being accosted by my dog
(I'd categorize Stranger Things as fantasy flavored horror myself, with horror being very firmly the primary driver in terms of genre classification)
Send pics
its primary genre classication is 80s, actually
Didn't do so well outside of the existing D&D fanbase
i would classify it as 80/90s nostalgia horror more so than anything else with fantasy elements
Yes
but yeah agree with you here kon
Well she's not attacking me now and that's why I can type
GOT got so so popular because it killed people off
but it wouldve been popular without that
yeah like i said, well produced well run well funded with adult themes treating those adult themes with some respect big popular untill they stoped treating them with respect and flew off the rails and got shafted by having to rush to an ending that mabey would have made sense if we got a couple extra seasons
Ans to clarify, it was rushed by the showrunners themselves
(I am reticent to see “adult themes” in the way GoT does it as making in intrinsically better than other fantasy stuff)
hbo would have happily given them more seasons
not better, but resonates with gen pop more than some other things going on right now
Mostly because I think GoT intentionally goes dark and gritty, more than it might need to. I love GoT, but that is a thing.
I also wouldn't count, say The Family Man as fantasy any more than I would like The Walking Dead as science fiction. Having any element of mysticism doesn't quite get it over the line for me
D&D were just
A) uninterested in the fantasy elements which are critical to the actual book ending
B) wanted to get a big payday from Disney for their star wars show
GoT goes dark and gritty but it actually commits to that narratively. the issue with other fantasy that tries to incoroprate that aestetic is not being able to write as well as george
Yeah and I think that’s because it’s for “adults” unlike that kiddish sword and sorcery stuff. (I say this sarcastically).
Which is just an idea I am fundamentally disgusted with
I think a lot of that is just the urban legend that developed in the aftermath of the show, not necessarily the truth
Which part?
I’m pretty sure it’s self admitted
like, it's been firmly established that they had outlined how many episodes and seasons would be left in the show at the conclusion of season 6, and Star Wars came around like a year later
yeah its also how Breaking bad got popular
The thing that made Got work was a strong tone and writing imo. It really focused on the political angle of a medieval setting. That contrasted with the fantastical elements to make them seem more intimidating. I’d argue the decrease in magic actually helped make those elements pop but I think it’s end of its first episode and finale really are why it worked
They had been systematically cutting out as much fantastical stuff as they possibly could for much of the shows existence
GRRM has also publicly indicated he wanted 13 seasons
ngl i assumed GRRM hated the show for some reason
He's madge about HotD
I think the 'downplaying of fantasy elements' is at least partially true, but I think it understates the element that George hadn't actually given them as much to work with on them as they wanted, like they just hadn't been develped yet
I absolutely couldn't source it, but I'm pretty sure we have someone credible saying HBO wanted to give them another 3 seasons
He wasn't madge about GoT at its height though, he was an active contributor the whole time
there is also the fact we are looking at these projects that are made by literal hundreads/thousands of humans with crazy messy situations from the outside and then attributing reasons and motives on humans and situations we dont know much about
No that’s House of the Dragon
HBO would have been happy to give them more, George wanted more, D&D said they only had enough material for what they delivered, and they felt that to try to extend it would both unnecessarily drag it out without substance and would risk key actors leaving the show prematurely
Well, until he wandered off to try to do more writing before the show gave him the solutions he wanted.
George wrote episodes for the first show
The got the ending but by the time they did they'd hamstrung themselves by cutting out stuff in previous seasons and so couldnt even approach the real ending for most characters
like yes we have some information but we never KNOW the truth of it all
this is why we need an anbennar TV show smh
That’s why we got all those teleporting armies
I think he was mad at one specific thing and the treatment of his friend. That said what he was mad about doesn’t make sense to me as a book reader and there were much bigger episodes in that s2
what is an anbennar?
there is no real ending
ASOIAF ||like, for instance cutting out Young Griff ruined the Kings Landing stuff||
There are knights and castles and kings and dungeons and beheadings and all the generic/stereotypical stuff that pretty much anyone in the anglosphere thinks of when they imagine "medieval" or whatever with a light sprinkling of the most basic fantasy stuff, we got dragons, we got zombies, we got a bit of scary magic and that's kinda it. Yeah there are a few fantasy words and big wolves and named swords but, like... it's never asking anyone to do any heavy mental lifting when it comes to engaging with the new ideas the way any Cosmere world would or even Wheel of Time or basically any original setting which doesn't have easy direct Real World (or at least the kinda fictional/fantastical preconceptions people have) historical analogue.
I truly wish we could get high quality high fantasy of the sword and sorcery type but I doubt it would be popular with gen pop
