Even Terra Invicta which is harder than The Expanse has a lining of fudge.

Skrimit brings up a good point behind spoiler bars: the Expanse's weirdness is very specifically presented as weirdness as an opening salvo. Across the entirety of the series, the story explores the whys of the weird and puts I think a much more manageable face on it than the apparent mysticism of the opening arc

That’s interesting! I think (WoT show and books, very general just like character names) ||the only ones that replaced for me are Moiraine and Lan and Elayne. Others feel very similar, but ultimately different characters. I see them as a fairly solid adaption for the most part and see why every choice was made but in several ways it makes them just feel different to me. So, my mental images of the characters’ appearances aren’t quite changed||

LoVM gives me things the campaign can't give me. For starters I just think in general is a great adaptation. But it gives me great animation (that just keeps getting better every season), great soundtrack, tighter performances, a means to just see in action the cool stuff I remember from the tabletop, and to MG's point, a way to sure this thing I love with other people (including my wife who I don't ever foresee picking up dice )

The campaign gives me what honestly is probably my favorite part of CR which is just the table dynamics xD. Yes, I love these characters, I love their performance, I love watching Matt GM (even when I think he screws up! Helps me remind me I can screw up as well, tho ;P). All things you can't get from a tv show

but of course the campaign always comes first, having a special place in my heart (I think I caught it live around ep 5 or so and have been following ever since)

AtlA season 1 (both versions) ||Like, some of the changes make a lot of sense to me, like having Aang interact with some past Avatars besides Roku earlier in the series. Others just, as described, feel like they completely miss the point of the original stories? Like Jet, in the original it was quite important to that his actions were gonna kill civilians; a deliberate mirror to how his family was killed by the Fire Nation. Having him...try to assassinate Bumi instead is just kinda to me. Do the actual show make a better thematic connection with this than can be described in the summary?||

||Favorite character overall is Toph. But Zuko is my blorbo. The way he was written as a survivor of parental abuse was incredibly authentic, and it really struck a chord with me (this is a useful hack for any story, want to make me like a character? Give them crappy parents). In general I'm really impressed at how well the show handled stories of grief and trauma and healing. I would have liked to see more certainly, but I did not expect them to even do this much in a kids show.||

I do have one major complaint:

AtlA ||Yeah. The writing for the other characters in book 3 was really good though. I'm glad they finally figured out a good way to write Sokka. Proof that a character can still be comic relief while respecting his competence. The Southern Raiders was one of the best explorations of grief, healing, and what it means to forgive that I've encountered in fictional media (I'm very glad Katara didn't forgive the man who murdered her mother). And I've already gushed about Zuko, I love everything about his character's journey, including and especially his backslide at the end of season 2. Suchhhhhh a good depiction of an abuse survivor.||

Anyways, my opinion on the shipping stuff is that ||I feel pretty uncomfortable with thinking of Aang that way, and Toph and to a large degree Katara too. Idk why the line in my head is so precise, but getting into relationship stuff with anyone younger than 15 feels somewhat wrong to me.||

||While kids that age are of course going through puberty and dealing with those kinds of feelings, they're just...too unformed for them to really mean anything in terms of life-long relaitonships. Hell that goes for the teenagers too, but a couple years of maturity feels significantly less ick for me.||

That's similar to the idea I just hit upon as well. AtlA all ||Have hints at energy-bending earlier, maybe someone tells him that he needs to learn how to bend his own energy to unlock the Avatar state again. Something like that would kill two birds with one stone, making both Aang entering the Avatar state and the energy bending feel less like Deus-Ex Machinas.||

||And it would also tie together both of Aang's major conflicts from the season (failing at Ba Sing Se, not wanting to be a murderer) in a more cohesive way.||

||tying it into Ty Lee's technique also keeps the whole "everything is a distinct martial art". Although maybe it's better that the prototypical bending doesn't have a distinct style 🤔 ||

Atla all || idk, energy bending and chi blocking feel fundamentally different to me, even though they have similar effects in the series. I don't think Aang was permanently blocking the physical chi paths on Ozai, I think he straight up manipulated his metaphysical capacity for bending, whatever that is||

ATLA ||IMO what is important is Aang’s dilemma being more clearly presented earlier. We know he is a pacifist, but he doesn’t have to think about the cost of violence for too long before being given an answer. So, I’d have him struggle between violence and peace and the inevitable battle with Ozai more early on (rather than dealing with it all in the finale). I’d also introduce the Lion Turtle earlier and have Aang work to find it for a longer amount of time ||

Atla all || are they completely different? They look different, but the principle is the same: use your opponents strength against them, that's why it's inspired. The actual technique is similar, even though they manifest that technique in different elements. What I was arguing is that it feels like the technique for energy bending is just completely different from the technique of chi blocking. At most he could've been inspired by the concept of removing bending, but not by anything technical ||

ATLA All ||I've put a little thought into it, and I think the big change that'd make the Lion Turtle work is if Aang was looking for a pacifist solution at The Library, and gets pulled off of a hot lead when Sokka asks for help with the Planetarium (which feeds into the owl-whose-name-might-get-this-blocked's disappointment in humanity and The Avatar).||
