The show gives the main cast some hard edges they do not have in the books to give them more of an arc for the first couple of books by filing those edges down and that landed with some people (I think especially people initially familiar with the show rather than the books) and did not land with others

Except Avasarala, who is eternal

I watched the first few episodes but I think it was too soon after reading the book, so I'm giving it a little time before I try again

book 4 vague ||the character writing is showing a marked improvement as the books go on (esp with the new characters) but I've heard the show characters are stronger from the start, which makes me excited||

I wouldn't say that the show characters are stronger so much as they have more clear arcs in the first few seasons relative to the first few books

That, and Ty and Dan actively took actor input and worked it into the book versions of the characters around books 4/5

For example, [early s1] ||in the show there's a lot of interpersonal tension between the Rocis because they don't know/don't trust each other and in the books they just sort of gel out of a fairly significant necessity. The books sell it well, but it is an opportunity for character work that simply isn't taken and I think wouldn't have fit as well in the book format||

the problem for me is that the equivalent sections of the book don't feel like they have alternate characterization for the side cast, but just a lack of characterization

Which is fine because the show had a whole season to do half a book

Agreed with this guy from reddit a lot || I wasn’t a fan. It wasn’t a bad movie it was just slow and boring. Plus they spoiled the whole Galactus wants our child plot. The movie just felt like they expected it to be better they they’ve lost whatever made them special.

I am sick to death of every victory being about love winning. The mother losing her child suddenly finds the strength to force push a literal space giant. Ok.

I’m also super disappointed in how much Galactus time we got. We got more Thanos time in the first Avengers movie. Also watching the movie I just kept waiting for something and that something never happened which makes you leave with an empty feeling ||

I know these were your friend's takes not yours, but these strike me as stylistic decisions rather than inaccuracies. KDH ||Bobby's character isn't supposed to be a realistic depiction of a kpop manager. He's supposed to be a goofy, supportive guy who helps the girls succeed. This feels like... critiquing the police procedures of like, Zootopia, to me.||

||The movie takes lots of liberties with timeline and how actual kpop marketing would usually happen. Like, they just launched Golden and are in the promo period for it and haven't yet done their first live performance, but they're able to separately write, produce and choreograph a brand new track with Takedown in two weeks to get it ready for a stage debut? That's pretty unrealistic. But the movie's not about realistic kpop production timelines, so that's fine, imo. Also they're going out and fighting demons all the time in addition to their kpop duties, ha. The movie has decided not to overcomplicate it and just says they have enough time to do the things that are necessary for the plot.||

Given the number of people involved in the movie who are industry veterans and the level of research they did to get things right that they wanted to get right, this stuff feels fully intentional to me, not an oversight.

I never saw all of the first Top Gun, but I saw the sequel, and I thought it was pretty good. I think it does a phenomenal job of building tension in its final act. I have only one real issue with Top Gun Maverik, and it's that (plot spoilers) ||the "enemy" is never given a face. The movie goes out of its way to avoid assigning its antagonists any identity, any ideology, any nationality, or have any defining traits. They have no insignias, their faces are never shown, and they're only ever referred to as the enemy. I don't get why the movie tries so very hard to not give them any form of identity, as if "enemies of the US" is the only reason we should be rooting against them.||

Which show, Transformers Prime? Well, the Autobots have an accord with the US government and military in that show, but it takes a big backseat to the Autobots and Decepticons being, you know, the actual focus of the show. The US military is just kind of there incidentally to give an excuse for the Autobots to have a secret base and for the Autobots to rescue when the Decepticons come to steal classified military tech.

Weapons & Barbarian ||What I really enjoy about this guys last two movies is he absolutely nails the feeling of catharsis at the end of the movie. Barbarian had it where you're pumping your fist as the characters defeat the monster and the very final shot of the movie is a goddamned pun which always makes me smile when I remember it. Goddamn I did not expect to be laughing for the last 10 minutes of Weapons as some of the most absurd insane slapstick occurs in front of me. I went into this horror movie thinking "I hope it's not too scary because I have to sleep tonight" and left with a big ole smile on my face and thinking DAMN that was a cathartic ending||

God someone else please see this movie so I can talk to someone about this ending

I just watched this indie comedy movie called Hundreds of Beavers and it was really, really funny. It had some crude sexual humor I didn't really like in a few parts, but in general the plotting was very clever, the cinematography was ingenious, and the slapstick humor was just plain hilarious. I laughed out loud many times. It's a very chaotic movie, but it's a fun chaos.

I love Black Panther; Wakanda Forever! I feel like audiences and critics kind of slept on that one because Marvel was in a rough spot and everyone assumed it would be mid and went into with that expectation. Personally, I thought the movie was awesome. Almost on par with the first one (which is one of my favorite MCU movies), and with an even better musical score and soundtrack IMO. I will gladly defend it too.

I've spent an unhealthy amount of time considering this situation (accidentally hyperfixated on it yesterday) and the more I think about it, the more I think it's just a lot more complicated than this blog post presents it as. There's some very real criticisms in the blog post that should be addressed, but there's also a loooot of sketchy exaggerated stuff, and I think that digging into the details makes it seem more like Hussie's side had at least some genuine reasons, but made bad choices, rather than them just being outright malicious. A lot depends on what they say and what evidence they have when they respond.

It's not irrelevant to this situation that an animated Homestuck show pilot just got announced, made by Hazbin Hotel people.

I'm inclined to trust that the most significant accusations really happened and he didn't just pull them out of thin air. And I think his version of story for what the other side was thinking, and why they did what they did, is possible. But I can also see how the other side's choices could reasonably come from good intentions. The situation clearly hit him on a very personal level and his blog post feels to me like it threw every possible thing at the wall to see what sticks, where every thing that went wrong gets ascribed to the worst possible intent. I can see how that could come out of his frustration, but it does feel to me like it unnecessarily escalates the situation and makes me want to be cautious about assuming I know the full story.

But I think we're getting glimpses of what's going on over there, concurrently with the plot.||

If S2 is 7 episodes, then I think a 7 episode Alabasta that has room to have a full denouement rather than rushing out like S1 did is doable. Especially as they'll probably have more Ace in there. And maybe Kohza plotlines, Coby stuff, or at the very least Smoker and Tashigi stuff.||

Question for people who have seen Weapons. I’m not someone who does well with a lot of horror, but I’m trying to get more into it and I have some friends who are going to see it. I’ve seen the trailers and it looks good, but I’m worried that it will be too gory and intense for me. So, how bad is it? The main type of horror I’m worried about is stuff like visceral bodily injury, stuff that’s shown in detail and/or really built up. Very much no. The book is generally very positive about the militarized future humans and shows them fighting efficiently with powered armor drop troops and being successful. The movie not only makes the soldiers weaker with lighter gear, it also makes them propaganda-blinded fools who are woefully underprepared to fight the bugs and die in droves. The militarized state is very clearly evil in throwing its soldiers into fights they can't win, lying to the populace about how the war is going, and having even stricter regulations than what was in the book. Helldivers takes the movie version and makes it even more extreme
