Yeah. Like itā€™s definitely not an actual prequel, but you can see how it started that way. And I think this is better because they arenā€™t bound by later story beats and can tell their own story without damaging the legacy of Downton Abbey, while still functionally seeing some of what could have been an origin for Downton.

It also allows for a harsher story in Gilded Age because (most recent episode) ||Gladys is such a tragic character and everything ā€œworking outā€ in the future if she was Cora would be almost insulting to the things her mom has put her through. Like it lessens the damage with that knowledge. So, making this its own thing allows for them to actually show more ruthlessness and cutthroat behavior on Berthaā€™s part. As is, there is a level of historical accuracy that is very tragic and works well because it is so terrible. ||

||i think the argument against the twitter poster's point is that, well, the point is that it plays into a narrative about immigrants. the point is that the narrative damages superman so much in part because it's something people can and will believe. and ultimately superman is not defined by where he came from, which i think is a strong point to be made. i think the criticism of how he's good because of western values is kinda fair too, but that's ultimately just the larger issue of how tied superman is to america. that one is a larger thing to untangle, and something i think is fair to have an issue with but also fair to put aside as the movie still has strong positive messages in spite of that.||

The main problem I think with comic book fandom today is how people tend to be so attached to one version of a superhero or villain that they like, and thatā€™s completely ok! But we need to realize these characters evolve and change over time, they donā€™t stay stagnate

A handful of people were setting the bar higher but I think on the whole a lot of those people (particularly Joey Batey, who they seem to adore) are given a lot more to work with than Cavill was

Which, sure, probably his own fault to an extent because of what amounts to actual "creative differences" and the tug of war over character direction was landing him in some weird spots

But I'm also convinced the Powers That Be are more interested in making a vague approximation of The Witcher with the intent of Cinematic Universing than they are in making a Witcher adaptation

I've read so many different versions of the way this has played out over the years (I think all parties involved's feelings have changed as much as layers of disagreement have compounded over the years) but from what I gather Cavill didn't just think he should speak less, he also really didn't like what he was being asked to say. Which, going off how a lot of other characters are written, I'm not entirely sure I blame him

I don't disagree. I haven't liked the direction of the entire Netflix Witcherverse (it trends dangerously close to CW territory for me) and I think I dislike it for reasons similar to Cavill's. I do think Cavill is a bit of a prick for trying to one man army his own vision of it when that clearly wasn't what was going to get made

The biggest problem I had with yen is by ||showing her backstory|| you miss out on having the audience piece it to get her which is much more engaging to the audience as you must actually engage with the media to figure it out

I think thereā€™s one specific moment that highlights the difference well for me and itā€™s (Book / show) ||Yennefer overhearing Geraltā€™s wish in the books and loving him for the choice because of her own self-loathing leading her to believe none could love her. Show Yennefer doesnā€™t hear this and instead treats it like a violation of her privacy when she finds out because she lashed out quite frequently in a juvenile way ||

Superman ||I think the film intended for it to be real, towards the end Superman seems to believe it despite Luthor being a lying bastard and Lex also says even he was surprised he found something so damning when he raided the Fortress. That said, I'd say fans have a right to debate it, or ask whether Brainiac or Zod might have meddled with it even if Lex didn't. And it's entirely possible that such a decision will be made in a future movie even if it wasn't intended when making this one.||
