i just started logging in to my desktop when i saw this
it just had this dialog without showing the problem
where can i see the problem

os: ubuntu server 24.04 lts (installed xubuntu-desktop so its effectively xubuntu)

Summary:

/var/log/dpkg.log: Detailed logs of all package operations.

/var/log/apt/history.log: Summary of apt operations.

/var/log/apt/term.log: Terminal output of apt commands.

journalctl: Aggregated logs for systemd-based systems.

dmesg: Kernel ring buffer logs.

/var/log/installer/syslog or /var/log/messages: General system logs.

By checking these logs, you should be able to identify the cause of any recent installation errors on your system

No idea why you would use Xubuntu and not Debian - Geez talk about choices

Nope - depends on what they are using eg Arch/RHEL based they probably have their specific reason not to use it. Downstream Debian versions - Ubuntu/xubuntu and the tons of others that are child systems or altered versions of Debian make life unnecessarily difficult for most. - would prefer if they start with a stable experience then venture out from there. All too often users use downstream and don't realise the linux experience is not the same.

Then they switch to Arch/Fedora like you @vast orchid that is a rolling distro - it breaks - they don't know why and they give up on linux. Anyway don't want to get the question off track. What I posted above @tall hare will allow you to check the logs in Xubuntu
