Summary:
/var/log/dpkg.log: Detailed logs of all package operations.

No idea why you would use Xubuntu and not Debian - Geez talk about choices

Nope - depends on what they are using eg Arch/RHEL based they probably have their specific reason not to use it. Downstream Debian versions - Ubuntu/xubuntu and the tons of others that are child systems or altered versions of Debian make life unnecessarily difficult for most. - would prefer if they start with a stable experience then venture out from there. All too often users use downstream and don't realise the linux experience is not the same.
Then they switch to Arch/Fedora like you @vast orchid that is a rolling distro - it breaks - they don't know why and they give up on linux. Anyway don't want to get the question off track. What I posted above @tall hare will allow you to check the logs in Xubuntu
