#App / IDE won't install

Get the tgz download from here: https://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/oomph/epp/2024-06/R/eclipse-inst-jre-linux64.tar.gz
Then follow this guide, seems sane enough to me, and I couldn't find a ppa for this on a brief search, so this will be the way: https://www.tecmint.com/eclipse-install-ubuntu/
The Eclipse Foundation - home to a global community, the Eclipse IDE, Jakarta EE and over 415 open source projects, including runtimes, tools and frameworks.
ah ok, im not sure if eclipse will work on debian 12 though. I saw on a website saying it'll only work on debian 11 and some other debians
Could have been an old website from before 12
Says it needs Java 9 or higher, so I would go with 17
alright, lemme research a little bit more to see if it'll work on debian 12 ( the current debian i have pretty sure )
Nice, you're welcome!
hey so i just wanted your help on this and i hope i don't have to open another thread, but i got this error when trying to get to the directory ( Downloads ) and it says there isn't a file but there is a file / folder. i'm assuming i might have to do the command with the actual tgz file to begin downloading the eclipse IDE any help?
ls -al from that home directory? You might not have a downloads if this is like a raspberry pi
also pwd
i have a downloads forgot to add the image
i did the ls -al command and got a bunch of files on my chromebook
i see the tgz file / download
let me try something and ill comeback
This is not a good indicator that a folder named Downloads exists in your home directory. When given a command to run, you should report back the output, because right now, I have no more information than I did before.
ok so i did the pwd command and it gave me this, would you like the ls -al command output as well?
Yes plz both
In text format of you can
Screenshots of text aren't super helpful either 😦
one second
the pwd output ( unsure if i did it correctly ) guage2323@penguin:~$ pwd /home/guage2323
and let me get the ls -al
ls -al total 108496 drwxr-xr-x 1 guage2323 guage2323 460 Jun 14 23:01 . drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 18 Jan 28 22:27 .. drwxr-xr-x 1 guage2323 guage2323 130 Jun 14 22:26 .atom -rw------- 1 guage2323 guage2323 5943 Jun 14 23:08 .bash_history -rw-r--r-- 1 guage2323 guage2323 220 Jan 28 22:27 .bash_logout -rw-r--r-- 1 guage2323 guage2323 3526 Jan 28 22:27 .bashrc drwxr-xr-x 1 guage2323 guage2323 162 Jun 10 22:17 .cache drwxr-xr-x 1 guage2323 guage2323 178 Jun 14 22:22 .config drwxr-xr-x 1 guage2323 guage2323 12 Jan 29 20:34 .dotnet -rw-r--r-- 1 guage2323 guage2323 111005170 Jun 14 22:59 eclipse-inst-jre-linux64.tar.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 guage2323 guage2323 55 Jun 12 10:56 .gitconfig drwxr-xr-x 1 guage2323 guage2323 32 Jun 6 14:42 .idlerc -rw------- 1 guage2323 guage2323 20 Jun 12 10:54 .lesshst drwx------ 1 guage2323 guage2323 20 Jan 29 20:33 .local drwx------ 1 guage2323 guage2323 10 Jan 29 20:30 .pki -rw-r--r-- 1 guage2323 guage2323 807 Jan 28 22:27 .profile -rw-r--r-- 1 guage2323 guage2323 425 Jan 28 22:27 .sommelierrc -rw-r--r-- 1 guage2323 guage2323 0 Jan 29 06:43 .sudo_as_admin_successful -rw------- 1 guage2323 guage2323 1029 Jun 8 13:41 .viminfo drwxr-xr-x 1 guage2323 guage2323 44 Jan 29 20:30 .vscode drwxr-x--x 1 guage2323 chronos-access 56 Jun 12 12:57 VSCODE -rw-r--r-- 1 guage2323 guage2323 49705 Jan 23 21:36 What_is_digital_marketing.avif -rw------- 1 guage2323 guage2323 104 Jun 14 22:08 .Xauthority guage2323@penguin:~$ cd gauge2323
hope this was helpful
i did this as well
pwd Downloads /home/guage2323
whoops
pwd just prints the working (current) directory. Not sure what it does with arguments, probably drops it entirely. This home directory does not have a Downloads folder, so there's nowhere to cd to.
ah ok, so where do you think these files are going?
and how can i set up a directory? would they be in the Linux Files?
I don't want to type out everything that's needed here, but these guys covered it: https://www.pluralsight.com/resources/blog/guides/beginner-linux-navigation-manual
alright, and once i do what is needed i should be able to install eclipse? ( and i am assuming i will need to put the eclipse file in the directory )
alright so i did pretty much everything i did and then i ran sudo ./eclipse-inst and it gave me no protocol specified ( Text below )
`guage2323@penguin:~/bar/eclipse-installer$ sudo ./eclipse-inst
No protocol specified
Eclipse Installer: Cannot open display:

Eclipse Installer:
An error has occurred. See the log file
/home/guage2323/bar/eclipse-installer/configuration/1718674672413.log. `
That seems like an x / Wayland problem. Check in that installer log file for errors and warnings near the end.
For any more help here, we're gonna start needing details: hardware information, distribution and version, and a list of the commands you've run (directly from your history would be best) to get a duplicate environment set up, and the contents of that installer log.
okay
i did the log file command and this is the output
